The owner of a restaurant in the Tyger Waterfront is fed up with people she believes are out to slander her sushi establishment’s name. This comes after at least three complaints about her restaurant, Asian-Asia, were received by the City of Cape Town’s health inspectorate last year. The complainant posted a blog on the internet last year wherein he lambasted the establishment. In that post, the complainant cited poor quality of the fish cuts used by the restaurant, as well as poor service and customer relations. The blog post was viewed about 60 000 times, the complainant later stated. Owner of Asian-Asia, Nancy Liu, spoke to TygerBurger to clear the air after yet another complaint was levelled at her restaurant. This time a customer claimed to have had a bottle thrown at her after refusing to pay last Friday. The customer refused to pay after allegedly seeing a cockroach on the liquor bottle she was served. The complainant also told TygerBurger the salmon used in the sushi was of “sub-standard quality”. When asked to comment, Nancy said she has CCTV footage to disprove the cockroach story. “That person is outright lying and has no proof whatsoever, which is why I want to make it abundantly clear that we have the CCTV footage at our disposal,” she said. The complainant and her partner partook in the “all-you-can-eat” buffet for at least two hours, Nancy said. “They ate a lot of food and only in the end

when they had to pay, they claimed they saw a cockroach in the Savanna bottle – with the bottle empty, as per the CCTV footage,” Nancy said. She says all drinks served are opened in front of customers. After complaining, the two customers decided to leave. This is when the alleged trouble started and the customer claimed to have had a bottle thrown at her. “Let’s be honest here: How on earth can you say the food is not ‘nice’ after you ate ten portions? “Why would you eat through the whole buffet and then at the end, after lying about a cockroach in a bottle of Savanna and running out of the restaurant upsetting my clients, then all a sudden claim you’re not paying due to sub-standard food you heartily enjoyed for hours?” Nancy maintains their salmon is bought fresh, “from trusted SA suppliers”. TygerBurger went to investigate the quality of the food and the hygiene of the establishment last Saturday. The handling of the food in the restaurant and the neatness of its personnel, as well as their hygiene, were similar to many other sushi establishments frequented by this reporter. A client at the restaurant at the time, told TygerBurger he ate there regularly. “I find no fault with the restaurant,” said the customer. “We regularly eat here. We’ve never had any problems with the quality of the food,” he said. “Afrikaner people maybe just expect too much, we complain very easily,” said the satisfied regular. V To page 2.

She stood at the security desk crying after the alleged incident,” Scheepers said. A person claiming to be Nancy’s lawyer, contacted TygerBurger on Monday. “How much more must this poor woman go through? This is the third time something like this has happened. There are a lot of people trying to influence the restaurant, including the media – it is illegal and I will put together a report on your reporting,” the man said. “This woman (Nancy) is a foreigner trying to make a living,” he said.

During the incident last year, the blog post writer claimed Nancy fired a waiter after he allegedly confirmed the presence of an insect in the sushi. Nancy said the complainant and the waiter were in cahoots. “He (complainant) and the waiter were a team. This guy, he kept threatening us. I saw the article on Facebook. That waiter was a problem. I asked him for a work permit which he didn’t give, after three months. When I didn’t want to use his services anymore, he brought that group,” she said. “They were out to destroy my business.” A report by a City of Cape Town health inspector, initiated after the complaint last year, found no fault at Asian-Asia. The City’s Siyabulela Mamkeli, Mayco member for health, answered TygerBurger’s query on the matter as follows: “City Health

He added the photos were placed on file and “thus far no further complaints have been received in 2015”.

Paid parking to aid fight against crime @linnertmb

even of Bellville’s current crime hotspots – parking areas dotting the business centre – will soon be blocked off to intruders by fencing and booms. This plan has been on the drawing board for a long time to rid Bellville of “crime and grime”. This is the hope of the City and the VRCID, the improvement district the City recently awarded clean-up contracts for the seven parking lots. “The City and VRCID have reached an agreement whereby the VRCID will manage certain public parking areas on behalf of the City as from 1 July for an initial fiveyear period,” said Derek Bock, VRCID COO. “Currently, the public do not pay for parking at these parking areas, but as soon as the VRCID and its service provider roll out the project, members of the public will need to start paying for parking,” he said. Bock said care was taken to keep the costs low compared to other business nodes. He said because the VRCID is an NPO, the earnings from parking would be ploughed back into the immediate area. Certain parking areas would be fenced off and daily cleaning teams will sweep and collect litter. It will also be monitored by security officers, he said. The VRCID is supported by the City and the Bellville police, Bock said, to ensure the

areas are kept clean and safe. “We also have the problem of prostitution and drug selling taking place in these areas; it can now be more closely monitored.” He said the surrounding businesses would be notified by pamphlet drop-offs about intended tariffs and whom to contact for monthly leases. “Daily parking is also available, with pay points at these parking areas.” The seven parking areas are at Church Square (opposite SARS), Paint City, opposite the Bellville Post Office, at the bottom of AJ West Street, in Bellvue Street, next to Elizabeth Park, behind the Boston Centre and opposite Protea Toyota. Bock said they aimed to make more parking areas paid-for in Bellville and Parow. “We understand that members of the public may possibly be upset, but paid parking is the norm. “If we want Bellville CBD to attract more investment in terms of urban renewal, we cannot allow crime and grime to continue to flourish,” he said. Sam Pienaar, chairman of Subcouncil 6, told TygerBurger he was excited about the prospect. “The process has been a long time coming. From subcouncil’s side, we are excited that certain elements will now be addressed that are very important to us,” he said. “Through this process we will see if we can bring order to these areas and stem the abuse thereof of people turning them into sleeping and living quarters,” Pienaar said.

Bellville teacher off to ‘space’ with NASA A

teacher who lives in Ridgeworth in Bellville has participated in a global NASA maths and science programme for in the USA. Shaun Keyser teaches Grade 7 learners at Bridge House School in Franschhoek and was part of NASA’s Space Camp educational programme. The camp is specifically aimed at teachers wishing to advance science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in their schools. A number of teams visited the US Space and Rocket Centre (NASA’s official visitor information centre for the Marshall Space Flight Centre) in Huntsville, Alabama. Westley Casey from the Space Camp explained in a statement that the attendees were tested on leadership, teamwork and decision-making and given a number of missions. Some of their experiences included astronaut simulators and virtual tours into space to “save” the International Space Station (ISS), Casey stated. The groups were given lesson plans based

on actual NASA content, which will be passed on to their learners in their classrooms for practical learning. Shaun said a company called Honeywell fully sponsored his trip and one of his favourite activities was the simulated parachute jump into water. He was part of Team Zarya, which means sunrise in Russian, Shaun says. Zarya was the first module of the ISS,” he said. This module was launched into space in November 1998. Casey stated the participating teams were each made up of 15 members. He said the camp operates throughout the year and trainees sleep in quarters designed to resemble the ISS and train in simulators like those used by NASA. “Nearly 700 000 trainees have graduated from Space Camp since its opening in Huntsville in 1982,” Casey said. “Last year, children and teachers from all 50 states and 64 international locations attended Space Camp.” V Interested in training like an astronaut? Polisie trek vervalsers vas

ho knew pets could donate blood? Well, they can, and have been doing so at a Bellville animal hospital for at least four years. This essential service to animal hospitals across the province and country has been run by Dr Annie Singh at the Tygerberg Animal Hospital (TAH) in Kenridge since 2011. Singh calls the Tygerberg Pet Blood Donor Clinic her “baby”. “We supply many of the animal hospitals in the Western Cape with blood, but there is a hospital in Pretoria which also has a blood bank,” she says. “I guess you could say we share the burden to supply animal hospitals across the country.” Singh says just last week some of their donor blood was sent off to Vredenburg and even Port Elizabeth, as well as Pretoria.

Signing up “We have 60 clients [donors], mainly dogs and about 10 cats. It is more difficult to get hold of donor cats – I’m not sure that people are aware of this service,” she says. “Generally, the client first has to sign on.

We need a dog of over 30 kg, which is not obese. It has to be a standard, healthy large breed animal between one and eight years old,” she says. “The reason is simple: We take about 350 ml of blood at a time. With the anti-coagulant, a donation is about 450 ml in volume,” she says. The principle is the same as for humans, who have to be about 55kg to donate half a litre, she says. It is a little different for cats.

Sedation “Cats are normally only about three to four kilograms in size. We take only 40 ml – 60 ml at most.” She says they don’t keep cats’ blood, it is used immediately and only in emergencies. “Because we take so little blood, there isn’t a bag small enough to store it in.” So how does the process work and does the donor animal feel any pain? “We do give them sedation, but this just cuts off the edge, as it is a general anaesthetic. They don’t really feel any pain because of the sedation. “The owner comes in the morning and has to keep them starved for the sedative. Then we do a blood count,” Singh says. They proceed with a blood smear, a parasite check and if all is 100% okay, they proceed with the sedation. “The animal goes from table to floor. We do not have any problems with this. They are fed immediately as soon as the procedure is completed. Then they are given a dewormer and can go home,” she says. Their donor pets donate every three weeks, she says. “In theory they can donate every three weeks, but we rotate the clients.” “We have clients as far as Hermanus. This dog needed emergency medical assistance and his owner thought a good idea to ‘give back’ to other pets would be to donate. When we need blood, we call on donors. We also have clients from the southern suburbs, in Claremont and such. “I’m not sure everyone knows of this service, but we did have an open day about a month ago. We also have a board up in our facilities with our donor heroes. Soon we’ll start to give them gold stars or red stars.” The donor animals “retire” at the age of eight.

Bellville to open streets

pen Streets is a global movement to maximise the power of streets as public spaces. Now a Bellville organisation wants to embrace the idea. The Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) is partnering with local NGO Open Streets Cape Town and members of the Bellville community to explore the possibility of holding an Open Streets day in Bellville in October. The plan is to close some roads to motor vehicles, thus opening the space for people to walk, cycle, skateboard, play and simply enjoy the street in new ways. The idea behind Open Streets is to create spaces that are shared by the public and embody respect for all, the GTP stated. This is a means to help bridge “the social and spatial divides of our city”. The GTP wishes to “breathe life into the Bellville CBD by taking vehicles off the street and opening it to everyone to share and enjoy this often overlooked public space”. The GTP encouraged the entire community to take ownership of their public spaces as the event relies on community involvement. Previous Open Streets days have been held in the City Bowl, Observatory and Langa. “The Open Streets platform has the potential to draw people in from other parts of the city, connect different communities and encourages the use of public transport.” Over the next two months, Open Streets and the GTP will engage various community members to explore this initiative for Bellville’s CBD. The plan includes the involvement of the local City Improvement District, the VRCID. Two “Talking Streets” walks and two community meetings open to all locals and businesses will be hosted in July, pre-empting the roll-out of the initiative during the first two weeks in October. “We are working towards the ideal of streets being public spaces that allow people to share the space in a way that is safe and provides fun for everyone,” said GTP CEO Chris O’Connor. “Well managed public spaces can provide ideal opportunities for building a sense of community and enhancing quality of life in city centres,” he said. The initiative forms part of the GTP’s Desirable Spaces Programme. ‘Wolwe’ by sentrum aktief in ‘skaapsklere’ D

aar was die afgelope maand twee voorvalle in die Middestad-winkelsentrum in Bellville waarin skelms hulself as polisiebeamptes voorgedoen het. Só sê kapt. Fienie Nimb, woordvoerder van die Bellville-polisie. In die mees onlangse voorval, op Saterdag 20 Junie, is daar ’n vrou betrokke wat geld getrek het, sê Nimb. “ ’n Onbekende man het met haar begin gesels, sommer alledaagse dinge – kinders, en so meer. “Ná ongeveer 15 minute het hy ’n pakkie geld uit sy sak gehaal en die dame meegedeel dat hy dit opgetel het; hy het gesê dat hy die geld met haar sal deel,” sê Nimb. Die vrou wou toe verder niks met die man te doen hê nie, maar die man het glo aan haar gesê dat daar kameras was wat haar afgeneem het en glo sou wys dat sy “medepligtig” tot ’n misdaad is, sê Nimb. “ ’n Ou wit Mazda het in Voortrekkerweg langs hulle gestop. Daar was drie mans met ‘siviele klere’ in die voertuig. “Die bestuurder het ’n ‘polisie-identifikasiekaart’ aan haar getoon. Hy het gesê hulle werk vir die polisie en dat sy nou ’n verdagte in ’n rooftog is waarin daar glo geld gesteel is.”

Die vrou is versoek om in die motor te klim en om die geld wat sy getrek het, aan hulle te oorhandig. Sy het die geld gegee en die mans het dit in ’n koevert teruggeplaas, verseël, en haar gevra om hul by die polisiekantoor te ontmoet, sê Nimb. “Toe sy die koevert oopmaak, was dit vol geskeurde koerantpapier.” In die ander voorval op 4 Junie het ’n man weer aan ’n vrou voorgegee dat daar ’n ander vrou in die area beroof is. “Twee mans in gewone klere het haar genader; die een wys toe sy polisie-ID en sê hulle is polisiebeamptes. Hulle versoek haar toe om die geld wat sy getrek het, asook haar selfoon, aan hulle te oorhandig, wat sy toe ook doen,” sê Nimb. Hul het ook aan dié vrou gesê om na die polisiekantoor te stap en dat hulle haar daar sou ontmoet. “Sy het hulle nooit weer gesien nie.” Nimb het mense versoek om bedag te wees op hierdie slenter. “Moet onder geen omstandighede persoonlike items aan enige onbekende persoon oorhandig nie. Gaan in die naaste winkel en vra hulp. Die skelms nader ouer dames.”

Greatest danger lurks in the home One in every two women killed are murdered by their partner. Research by the Medical Research Council, mapping trends over a decade, shows murder by a relative or loved one, often referred to as intimate female homicide, has become the leading cause of women being killed. Researchers found little had been recorded in police dockets on prior abuse history. This is alarming, as murder is seldom the first act of violence against an intimate partner. Perhaps if a history of abuse had been recorded, the murder could have been prevented. Children don’t fare much better. More than two children are murdered in South Africa every day, according to the 2011/12 crime statistics. Our rate of child homicide is more than double the global average, according to the World Health Organisation. Over a third of these murders take place in the child’s home and more than a third of children are killed by someone they know. There was also a high rate of sexual assault in these cases. In fact, over 50 children are raped daily in our country, according to the 2013/14 crime statistics. And these are just the reported cases. These statistics should scare you. They should leave you feeling disturbed. They should spur you to action, either to leave a dangerous situation or help those who find themselves in one. Hiding behind your curtains is no longer an option. Preventing these atrocities is everyone’s concern.

Dit was vir my baie ontstellend om eerstehands te ervaar dat Jesus en die duiwel as paaiboelies gebruik word, afhangende daarvan of ’n leerder “soet” of “stout” is. Menige predikant sal met my saamstem dat hierdie soort benadering nie gesonde spiritualiteit bevorder nie. Leerders blyk ook te sukkel met godsdiensbegrip en die internalisering van hierdie oordadige onderrig, wat grens aan breinspoeling. So het ek ’n graad 1-leerder vir ’n klasmaat, nadat sy haar lelik afgeknou het, hoor sê: “Ek mag jou maar seermaak, want Jesus het klaar vir my sondes betaal!” Die wêreld word daagliks blootgestel aan grusame geweld in die naam van een of ander geloofsoortuiging. Kinders behoort nie deur onopgeleide predikers geïndoktrineer te word nie. ’n Verwronge godsbegrip mag hieruit voortspruit. Hou godsdiensonderrig uit skole; dit hoort tuis aan moedersknie. Christenskap moet orals beoefen word in skool, werk, sportveld, klubs en enige plek waar jy aan kan dink. Nou maak julle asof dit ’n kriminele oortreding is om jou geloof te beoefen. Asbestos pipes the cause of problem The article “Pype teister inwoners”, TygerBurger, 24 June 2015, refers. The real cause of the problem is not mentioned. The pipes are old asbestos cement pipes. It was found that over time the effective cross-section of these pipes reduces due to internal and external calcium leaching due to water and groundwater conveyance, which results in pipe softening and loss of mechanical strength. Wines win in ‘food’ categories T

hree of Durbanville Hills’ wines from their reserve Rhinofields range have won awards at the 2015 Sommelier Selection wine competition. The 2012 Rhinofields Chardonnay took the trophy in the “full and rich” category whilst the 2014 Rhinofields Sauvignon Blanc and 2013 Rhinofields Noble Late Harvest were each shortlisted in the categories “elegant and classy” and “sticky’s” respectively. With just under 400 wines judged blind by two panels consisting of three sommeliers each with one associate, the wines were evaluated not by grape varietal but more by the style and price point. According to organisers, the aim of the competition is to find the best, most dynamic wines available on the market, judged on their food appropriateness. The competition, a first for the South African wine industry, is judged solely by a panel of South African sommeliers and in categories, although unusual, which reflect the design of a wine list for a restaurant and hotel. These include house wines, fresh crunchy whites, voluptuous rich reds as well as beer, cider and international wine. Delighted cellar master Martin Moore said the reserve range from Durbanville Hills truly reflects the unique terroir of the area.

From Bethulie to Bellville with MS

brave sufferer with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) recently walked along the N1 from Bethulie to Cape Town. A special welcoming ceremony was held for Anneke Olivier (44) at a restaurant in the Willowbridge Shopping Centre in Bellville after her arrival in the Cape after she walked a full 875km in about 20 days. The news was related by Non Smit, chair of MSSA, who supported Anneke, who comes from a small Free State town, on her long journey. “When Anneke first told her husband Eugene that she wanted to walk from her home town Bethulie in the Free State to Cape Town, he thought she was joking,” says Non. Anneke is a full-time nursing sister in her home town and was diagnosed with MS in 2010. Non says this does not prevent her from living her days “to the full in service of others”.

Keen athlete “I want to live a normal life and don’t think of myself as sick,” says Anneke. Anneke has always been a keen athlete and has completed the Cape Argus Cycle Tour nine times and swam the Midmar Mile in 2011. Anneke set out from Bethulie on 25 April, accompanied by two friends, Marina Voges and Tania Groenewald, says Non. She adds Jaco Visagie of Kroonstad drove the accompanying support vehicle sponsored by the Association for Persons with Disabilities in the Free State (APD). May was MS month and Anneke’s aim

was to create awareness and raise funds for the foundation in support of the very important work they do among people living with MS. “All along her route she paid visits to MS patients, educated and informed the public, handed out brochures at town clinics, to road workers, and at petrol stations along the N1. “Anneke is on an Interferon treatment which she administered herself during the walk. The treatment is a disease modifying drug which keeps relapses at bay,” says Non. Both Marina and Tania are healthy. “Anneke had faithfully practised her road work for a few months before the long walk. Developing blisters during the preparation time inevitably resulted in her using the treadmill for a while instead,” says Non.

Small talk The small party walked an average daily distance of 45km in three shifts, starting at 08:00 every morning, with a 30-minute breakfast break after the first shift, and a lunch break before the final shift of the day. En route, people would stop by with small talk while others would stop to enquire about the reason for the walk, Non says. She adds people along the road were mostly friendly, but on a “dark” note, the women discovered the body of a hit-and-run victim along the road. Anneke arrived in Cape Town just a little over a month ago and was met by Non and several other supporters. Non told TygerBurger last week that Anneke’s next stop will be a sky-diving stint...

Hospital seeks patient’s family Tygerberg Hospital is looking for the family of an unknown patient estimated to be about 27 years old. The woman was registered as Lydia Mafumo and admitted to the hospital on 22 March. She was brought in by ambulance after a pedestrian vehicle accident on the N1 near Oakdale Estate in Bellville. “The patient is dark of complexion and is a Zimbabwean and is able to speak English. Frog talk at FOTH Join the Friends of Tygerberg Hills for a presentation on the province’s “phenomenal” amphibeans. The talk will be presented by Clifford Dorse, the City’s biodiversity coordinator. an die land se voorste Afrikaanse taalkenners het Donderdagoggend byeengekom om die jongste toevoeging tot die bekendste woordeboek in Afrikaans te vier. Tydens dié byeenkoms is die Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (die HAT) se vyftigste bestaansjaar herdenk met die aankondiging van ’n omvattend herbewerkte en uitgebreide sesde uitgawe. Die bekendstelling van die nuwe HAT6 is behartig deur die samestellers, Jana Luther, Fred Pheiffer en prof. Rufus Gouws van die Universiteit Stellenbosch. Die drie redakteurs het om die beurt nuwe woorde en voorbeelde van hoe Afrikaans oor die afgelope twee dekades ontwikkel het, uit die nuwe woordeboek aangehaal. Gouws het die gaste vermaak met ’n snaakse anekdote oor sogenaamd uiters praktiese gebruike van die HAT, maar op ’n ernstiger noot verwys na die HAT se plek op die boekrak, “tussen die Bybel en Die Burger”, in elke Afrikaanse huis. “Die HAT het oor vyf dekades deel van elke huishouding geword. Die werklike doel van die HAT is om Afrikaans vas te vang, om vryheid aan Afrikaans te gee,” het Gouws in sy toespraak gesê. “Dit is nié ’n deurstop nie, maar ’n manier vir mense om die deure van kennis oop te maak.” Die verskil tussen vorige uitgawes en die nuwe een, het Gouws bygevoeg, is dat die nuwe uitgawe nie nét ’n formele of “Kanselafrikaans” weergee nie, maar wel Afrikaans in ál sy gebruiksvorme weerspieël en ook talle nuutskeppings bevat. “Wat die mond van vol is, loop die HAT van oor,” het Gouws geskerts. [Dit] bied die regte gereedskap om Afrikaans goed te kan gebruik. “In ons kantoor gebruik ons dit elke dag – ons kan nie daarsonder nie. Dit ontsluit vir ons die taal en verskeie taalkwessies.” Faan Pistor, ’n bekende taalman en senior kopieredigeerder by Media24, was dit eens dat die HAT ook vir hóm baie spesiaal is. “Ek het met die HAT grootgeword toe dit nog swart, donkerblou en maroen was. Oor die jare het dit ál dikker en beter geword. Ek bly steeds lief vir die hardeband-uitgawe, want ek wil onder ’n boom daarmee kan sit.” Luther het van die sesde uitgawe se statistieke met die gaste gedeel. Die nuwe HAT bevat digby 100 000 trefwoorde, kollokasies, uitdrukkings, afleidings en samestellings. Altesame 3228 nuwe trefwoorde is opgeneem en die totale woordtelling staan op 2,1 miljoen. Die werk aan HAT6 het sewe jaar geduur en die nuwe woordeboek het 200 bladsye meer as sy voorganger en is van 1 Augustus ook as HAT Aanlyn op die internet beskikbaar. Luther het gemeld dat die HAT se Facebookblad voortaan as platform sal dien om taalpraktisyns, joernaliste, akademici en alle gebruikers van Afrikaans op die hoogte te hou van gereelde toevoegings tot die nuwe, lewende HAT. “Dis ’n vliegtuig waaraan ons bou terwyl Afrikaans sy vlerke sprei,” het sy gesê. Die 6de uitgawe van die Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal verskyn op 15 Julie by Pearson.

Rotary induction at breakfast The Rotary clubs of Bellville, Durbanville, Oostenberg and Tygerberg recently arranged a combined function to induct their incoming presidents. “There are strong bonds of friendship and support among the four clubs and they work together on a number of community projects,” the clubs stated. “This time of the year when the weather is wet and cold it often affects an evening function. Thus it was decided to get together

for a hearty breakfast.” The clubs enjoyed a sunny morning among well presented Rotarians and friends. “The Durbanville club used the opportunity to present district governor Cecil Rose with a Paul Harris Sapphire award for his unfailing service to Rotary and the community. The presentation was done by Past President Bert Parker, who introduced a young Cecil Rose to Rotary,” stated the clubs.

he children of The Valley Primary School on Altydgedacht farm outside Durbanville took part in a mobile digital planetarium project, presented by Kingdom Skies recently. Kingdom Skies is an astro adventure and educational service provider that runs a mobile planetarium and stargazing programmes in the Western Cape. “We focus on bringing science and technology resources to schools and youth groups in various communities,” says Kingdom Skies director Ricardo Adams. “Most of us are familiar with the six kingdoms of life – we bring you the kingdom of the skies, a world unknown to most of us,” he says.

The mobile digital planetarium called “The King-Dome” was launched in October 2013. Its mission is to create a space to stimulate interest in astronomy by inspiring their audience to discover and investigate their place in the universe. “We offer educational presentations that are Caps friendly and give the learners an opportunity to ‘travel’ to the planets and become an astronaut for a day. We have been successfully in orbit for more than a year now around your atmosphere. “We eliminate expensive time consuming excursions, transportation expenses and the stress of transporting kids by bus,” Adams says.

he bumper 4th of July Independence Day meeting at Killarney on Saturday is a unique American themed package. It combines the razzmatazz of Yankee tanks, Ford Mustangs, chromed Harleys, the Star Spangled Banner and Billy Joel’s, “she’s like a rocket on the fourth of July”, all combined in the fifth round of the Power Series sponsored by Wingfield Motors. As far as racing goes, the All American one-make V8 Masters category, with cars unashamedly based on the Ford Mustang of old being redesigned for the track and built by Owen Ashley in his factory/workshop at Killarney, will take pride of place. Powered by modified V8 engines producing 325kW of power through the rear wheels and driven by superstars like multiple former South African Superkart champion Marcel Angel, sometime Supercar titleholder Richard Schreuder, Craig Jarvis, Fabio Tafani and Franco Donadio, the racing is almost always close and dangerous. With reigning Formula Supercar champion Nick Adcock possibly absent, the door in this category could open for young Dayne

Angel, who has been in fine form. Others to watch include Brad Wadeley, Andrew Moffitt and Gareth Easom. But the biggest entry and some of the best racing can be expected in the Midas Club-

man events from front runners like spectacular Danie van Niekerk in his Wingfield Beemer, Nieyaaz Modack (BMW), Jesse Huggett (VW Jetta) and Andre Johnson (Audi Quattro).

The 4th of July Independence Day meeting at Killarney on Saturday is a unique Americanthemed package.

The rookie to watch is going to be 15-yearold Joshua Dolinschek in the Formula Libre single seater class. Still too young to (legally) drive on public roads, Joshua was impressive as he dominated the first two rounds in which he competed earlier this season. However, he was well beaten by Julian van der Watt in a more powerful car at the most recent meeting. It will be interesting to see how he fares during the meeting on Saturday. At the other end of the scale, the popular 54-year-old Danie (van Killarney) Maritz is a veteran motorcyclist astride the same GSX-R750 Suzuki that carried him to victory in the 1987 Western Province championship. Incredibly though, this super-fit rider is lapping even faster now than he did more than 28 years ago. Aimed at the whole family, the day is also going to include a Breakfast Run for street legal motorcycles, a kiddies playground manned by minders and an American style hot-dog eating contest in the clubhouse. There are 18 races for cars and motorcycles on the programme, the first of which is due off after final practise and qualifying sessions at 10:00.

IGT Cape gets Mahoney back in the swing There was no mistaking the smile on Trevor Mahoney’s face when he birdied the 18th at Kuils River Golf Club to claim victory in the Kuils River Classic last Wednesday. The Pearl Valley golfer put on a classy performance on his way to a four-under 68 and a two-stroke victory on 10-under-par 206 over reigning Curro SA Juniors International champion Altin van der Merwe on the IGT Cape. “This is such a big monkey off my back,” said Mahoney as he hoisted the R12 000 winner’s cheque sponsored by The House of Machines. “I came here with a very specific game plan and I executed it. I feels really great to get the job done again.” Van der Merwe, from Bellville Golf Club, closed with a 67 to finish second, while Sunshine Tour champions Christiaan Basson (67) and Peter Karmis (68) and Boland amateur Armandt Scholtz (70) shared third on 209. Overnight leader Matthew Kent slipped to joint sixth on 210 after a 73 with Rhys

Mahoney made a name for himself on the amateur circuit before he turned pro in 2010, but lack of funds forced the SAGDB graduate to take back his amateur status two years later. “I started working at Pearl Valley Golf Estates and I competed for Boland until some people at Pearl Valley offered to finance my return to the pro circuit,” he explained. He promptly won the Vusi Ngubeni Qualifying School in January to secure his Sunshine Tour card for the 2015 season, but after six months of missed cuts, Mahoney was running out of patience. He entered the Kuilsrivier Classic hoping to find a way to get back on track. “The frustrating thing is that I’m not playing poorly,” he said. “My game is solid, but I’m not scoring. It starts wearing you down when you are playing well and consistently, but constantly missing the cut. It made sense to me to play the IGT Cape while the Sunshine Tour is on a break, because I needed to

break this streak. “I knew there would be pressure this week because we had a really strong field. Peter and Christiaan are very experienced and Rhys has been making waves on the Sunshine Tour. There was a bunch of other Sunshine Tour pros competing, so I knew the pressure would be on.” Mahoney set himself two goals for the week – to start with a red number and finish in double figures. “The IGT Tour guys set the courses up tough so amateurs can get used to what to expect on the Sunshine Tour,” he said. “Breaking par would tick the first box.” “I had 14 birdie chances in that second round, but I only made two,” he said. “I kept myself in the mix because I stayed patient and didn’t make mistakes. “Setting goals is very important and ticking the boxes has really given me a boost of confidence. I know I can turn my season around, so I just need to take this win and feed off it in my next start on the Sunshine Tour.”

eing the only female cyclist to be inducted in the Legends of the Pedal hall of fame is nothing short of remarkable. But Cathy Carstens has had a superb career that began back in 1984 and at the age of 52 this Brackenfell resident is still on her bike, with no intention of quitting anytime soon. “Before I started cycling I was a Western Province 800m athlete, but a serious knee injury forced me to quit and that is how I started cycling,” said Cathy. Her list of achievements reads like the perfect script. In 1985 she set the 3000m South African track record and won over 300 fun rides between 1985 and 1990.

In 1985 she won the mixed tandem section of the Argus Cycle Tour. The following year she broke the Argus record for women by more or less 30 minutes. “I still remember that day, everything was just going very well and I can’t remember the precise time, but I beat the record by about half an hour. After her 12-year absence she made a comeback at the age of 41. Two years later, competing with the best in the country, she showed her class by being ranked second in South Africa. Further accolades include gold medals at the SA veteran championships from 2007 to 2010. She took silver at the World Cup in Austria in 2005 and 2006 and gold in 2009. At the World Veteran UCI Road Champs in Austria she claimed silver in 2005 and 2006 and won gold in 2008. One of her proudest moments remains her

overall Western Province Cyclist of the Year award back in 2008. “What made this award so special for me was the fact that the award was for both men and women. So to walk away with that award being acknowledged the very best cyclist irrespective of gender was fantastic.” For now, there is no stopping Cathy. She is still active on her road bicycle and the mountain bike bug has also bitten her. “For me it is all about staying fit and healthy, and with mountain bike events it is a different way of seeing how beautiful our country is. “I have overcome many injuries in my life and I have realised if you never give up everything exists as a possibility.”
