Twee inwoners, Daniël Swart en Willem du Plessis, het in twee afsonderlike e-posboodskappe aan TygerBurger en stadsverteenwoordigers hul misnoeë uitgespreek oor die parkeerarea in Krugerstraat in Kempenville. Volgens dié twee woon daar ’n groep mense permanent op dié munisipale parkeerter-

rein. Daniël sê: “Dit kan al twee jaar of langer wees en kan tussen 10 en 15 mense wees. Snags slaap hulle onder die afdakke van ’n plaaslike elektriese toebehore-winkel op die hoek van Karoo- en Krugerstraat”. Such has been the deterioration at this parking lot and open space that the owners of Paint City evacuated the building and relocated earlier this year. A reader has since contacted TygerBurger and sent in pictures of what the area looks like at the moment. The reader claims homeless people are now squatting inside the building. The pictures depict rubbish, junk and debris strewn across the tarmac and open space – all of which is covered in potholes. The city improvement district the VRCID, which has done a good clean-up of most of Bellville until now, recently fenced off the adjacent parking lot in Charl Malan Street (opposite the Middestad Mall).

Earmarked for development? The reader’s question was: “Is this area (at Paint City) earmarked for clean-up or development by the VRCID? It will be nice to know whether an upgrade for this place is planned or if it will be left to deteriorate further.” TygerBurger posed this question to both the VRCID and the City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for transport, Brett Herron, as the City owns this piece of land. Herron responded by saying: “The area in question has a long history. Transport for Cape Town (TCT) ... took over the site of old the Paint City lease in January 2015. “The site was not in an ideal condition at the time and most of the issues mentioned ... were evident before TCT took over the responsibility,” he said.

Urban revival planned This planned urban renewal has been in process since August this year, after a meeting between local roleplayers, including chairman of subcouncil 6, Sam Pienaar, and Derek Bock, the COO of the VRCID, Herron said. “It was agreed (at that meeting) that the site would be fenced by a contractor to be appointed by the VRCID and that they would also provide security enforcement once this was done,” Herron said. “The lease agreement conditions had been amended to reflect all of these issues and obligations.” Bock confirmed the VRCID had already fenced off a section of the area in question, now being managed as a public parking space. “The rest has not yet been fenced off as the VRCID needs guarantees from the City that they will act upon illegal trading, dumping of litter, illegal occupation of the land and taxis that are using parts of this City property as a stacking area,” he said.

Herron said TCT was not aware of people breaking into and occupying the building they previously leased to Paint City. “The litter, illegal trading and occupation by homeless people is a common problem in Bellville and in the public transport interchange precinct. “This needs to be addressed with the assistance of our colleagues from the social development department – a matter that we will bring to their attention,” Herron said. He added TCT would be inviting tenders for the first phase of the redevelopment of the entire public transport interchange during 2016. “This will assist in improving the general conditions and renewal of the area.”

he award the Tyger Valley shopping centre recently won with its Christmas décor last year is not even gathering dust yet, or the Durbanville women behind the scenes are ready to launch their next Udomo designs. San-Marie Vogel from Durbanville founded Udomo Designs, a non-profit partnership between the local community, Oakhill Church (previously known as Durbanville Family Church) and a few passionate individuals last year to create Christmas decorations with a South African feel to them. Tyger Valley Shopping Centre recently walked away with the Spectrum Award in this year’s Footprint Awards for its refreshing proudly South African approach to its festive décor in December 2014. This annual award ceremony is hosted by the South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) with the aim of recognising outstanding marketing, innovation and creative initiatives, as well as economic success. This year Tyger Valley will again have a South African Christmas, but with an entirely different look and feel, says Vogel. The designs will be more simplistic and radiate a “festival of light” theme, and will

include an African inspired nativity scene featuring sable horns, a thorny crown, angles, doves, as well as the Bethlehem star. The baobab tree, which also took centre stage in their 2014 décor, illustrates the value of being deeply rooted in the good news of Christmas. Lizette Dupisanie, wife of Pastor Louis Dupisanie of Oakhill Church, created the circular design for the material, which was inspired by traditional shweshwe textiles. The designs in five colours – blue, red, green yellow and pink – include chandeliers, lights and light boxes which will be visible throughout the centre. Crochet work, displayed in wooden embroidery rings, will hang from Christmas trees. A group of unemployed women from Wallacedene in Kraaifontein were put through a locally designed entrepreneurship course to produce the range of Christmas decorations. They also helped to create various scatter cushions, table cloths, aprons, bags, ottomans and a myriad of other items, that will be sold at a pop-up shop in Tyger Valley from 20 November to 24 December. Decorations will be going up this week with the official launch on Friday 13 November. Harvest festival celebrates 160 years T he All Saints Church in Durbanville started celebrations to commemorate its 160 years of existence on 1 November with a harvest festival service at the church at 1 Baxter Avenue, Durbanville. The Very Reverend Bruce Jenneker, who is the rector of All Saints, explains: “The harvest festival service was presided over by the bishop of Saldanha Bay, the Right Reverend Raphael Hess. It is a celebration to honour all the saints, for whom our church is named, and to share in thanksgiving for the abundance of God’s provision and generosity as we bring gifts of food, fruit and vegetables for distribution to those in need.” The dedication of a memorial font (fountain) in the church garden formed part of the service. It has been built from the remnants of the original font recovered after the fire which destroyed the church building in 1996. As part of a year’s programme of celebrations, activities will be taking place throughout 2016, culminating in celebrating the actual birth date of the church in November next year. This first All Saints Church is thought to have been designed by Sophie Gray, wife of Robert Gray, the first bishop of Cape Town (1847-1874), who used Pampoenkraal (Durbanville) as their last outspan before arriving back in Cape Town after their long travels on horseback across the huge diocese. From 1856 to 1859 Anglican services in Durbanville were held in premises along Main Road, where the parking lot between Church Street and Wellington Street is now situated.

In the 25 years of his episcopate, bishop Gray established 63 churches, with Sophie serving as architect for at least 40. It is believed that All Saints, designed in the style of a small English village church, is one of her buildings. The original building was rectangular in shape and had whitewashed mud and brick walls. The roof was steeply pitched, covered in thatch and a simple bell tower over the door housed a single bell. All Saints was dedicated in 1860. By 1982 the parish had grown considerably and it became necessary to extend the building. The church was enlarged and given its present cruciform shape, the stained glass windows were installed and a gallery was added on the south side. On 4 June 1996 the church was gutted by fire. All the furnishings were destroyed; only the brass cross still used in the church today, and the brass crosses on the wardens’ wands survived. Within a year it was rebuilt through the generosity of the community and was re-dedicated on 26 October 1997. A gallery was added in the west and the floor raised on the southern elevation. Today the parish roll includes 1800 members. Three chapelries are included in its ministry, namely St Paul-in-the Valley, St John’s Klipheuwel and St Monica’s Fisantekraal, which also attended the harvest festival. Two Sunday morning services of the Holy Eucharist have a combined average attendance of between 350 and 500 each week. Weekday Eucharists are celebrated on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 09:30.

Wetstoepassingsbeampte het soos ’n ware held verlede Woensdag ’n boef te voet aangekeer nadat dié ’n vrou voor haar werkplek beroof het. Dié voorval het op Woensdag 4 November omstreeks 11:00 plaasgevind toe die slagoffer voor haar werkplek in Leipoldtstraat in De la Haye die veiligheidshek probeer oopmaak het. Die verdagte het haar oorrompel deur haar van agter te gryp en haar goue hangertjie van haar nek afgeruk, vertel kapt. Fienie Nimb, woordvoerder van die Bellville-polisie. Nimb sê die vrou se rekenaartablet het ook uit haar sak geval en is deur die verdagte gegryp net voordat hy weggehardloop het. Kollegas van die vrou het gesien wat gebeur en hulle na buite gehaas, terwyl die verdagte die hasepad in die rigting van die Sanbel-gebou gekies het, sê Nimb. Die kollegas is toe te voet agterna. “’n Wetstoepassingsbeampte, Dirk Jacobs, was aan diens in ’n ongemerkte voertuig, en het in Durbanweg gery,” sê Nimb. “Hy het gesien hoe die verdagte hardloop en agtervolg word deur lede van die publiek. Hy het die verdagte eers met die voertuig agtervolg.

Family members stood outside the house in Durbanville on Friday where a man was fatally injured when a wall collapsed on top of him. The incident happened at 09:30 at a private house at 16 Hibiscus Road where building renovations were taking place. Steadmore Fambirai (23) from Wallacedene died as a result of his serious injuries when the wall came crashing down. The site was investigated by the Durbanville police, as well as a representative of an occupational safety and health company. Volunteers of the Volunteer Empowerment Programme (VEP) of the Durbanville police were at the scene to talk to the deceased’s family members, who gathered outside the property. A family member told TygerBurger at the scene that the deceased got married earlier this year.

A Bellville educator was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the provincial education department on Friday. Hendrik Botha has been the principal at Excelsior Primary School in De la Haye in Bellville for the past 18 years, with a teaching career spanning 41 years. The motivation for his win – as given by the department in a statement – reads as follows: “Mr Botha is a good example of an educator who has dedicated his life to improve the lives of the learners under his care and guidance. “Mr Botha treats people as equals despite rank, age, gender or personal beliefs. He is tough on standards, but gentle with people, and this is reflected in his participatory management Hendrik Botha style,” according to the statement. “One of the highlights of Mr Botha’s career was the transformation of Excelsior Primary School from a predominantly white school in 1997, to the successful multiracial school that it is now. This was achieved through sheer commitment and dedication.” Botha was lauded for the seamless integration of other races and foreigners at the school and a special mention was made of his and the school governing body’s careful financial management that “allowed the school to improve their facilities and infrastructure to meet the needs of their ever changing environment”. “To this end, the school is in the process of completing a new building for Grade R learners, complete with an aftercare centre for 360 learners. This highly commendable project was financed from the school’s own funds. Money was also made available to assist and tutor foreign learners in English,” according to the statement. “Mr Botha truly embodies the characteristics of humility, commitment, dedication, respect and integrity and this makes him a worthy recipient of this prestigious award.”

Visser sê sy en twee vriendinne het die laaste paar jaar betrokke geraak by die versorging en hulp vir bejaardes. “Na baie navorsing het ons besef dat hulp en befondsing vir die senior burgers in ons land baie skaars is. Ons het ons eie nie-winsgewende organisasie begin en help veral oor Kerstyd om ’n bietjie die nood te verlig,” sê sy. Visser sê tot dusver was hulle heeltemal van vriende, kollegas en kennisse afhanklik om hulle met projekte te help, omdat hulle andersins geen

donasies of befondsing kry nie. Op die oomblik werk hulle hard daaraan om ’n Kersbederf-pakkie vir elke inwoner van Huis Uitsig en die Zandvliet Care Facility in Macassar te maak. “Indien ons genoeg fondse kan insamel, sal ons Huis Martina ook wil bederf,” sê Visser. Sy sê insamelings vorder flink, en sonder om die aap uit die mou te laat, sal elke pakkie “ietsie jonks van gees” bevat. Een van die planne is om, as hulle genoeg fondse kan insamel, met ’n roomysbussie na die tehuise te ry en vir elkeen ’n draairoomys te gee. “Ons het nog redelik skenkings nodig, hetsy dit kontant, produkte soos toiletware, geskenkpakkies is of net ’n hand wat kan kom help uitdeel.” Visser sê sy is bereid om pakkies, wat teen die eerste week van Desember klaar moet wees, te gaan oplaai by skenkers. “Ons maak elke pakkie só op dat dit persoonlik is. So as iemand ’n pakkie wil skenk, moet hulle ons asseblief vooraf laat weet sodat ons vir hulle ’n naam en kamernommer kan gee. Ons sal dan die pakkies by skenkers gaan oplaai,” sê sy.

Salzburg art exhibition at RustenVrede The work of 21 Austrian artists can be seen as part of a group exhibition at Rust-enVrede gallery in Wellington Road in Durbanville as part of an exchange programme. The exhibition, titled “Mitgebracht”, was opened yesterday (Tuesday) and runs until 10 December. The exhibition is curated by Dr Dietgard Grimmer and presented by the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and international affairs in collaboration with Austrian embassies and cultural forums. Meyer verdien nie venynige veldtog nie In 2013 was Heyneke Meyer nog in die meeste Suid-Afrikaners se oë ’n bekwame Springbok-afrigter toe die Bokke onder sy leiding die grootste oorwinning nog oor die Poemas (78-13) behaal het en die heel eerste oorwinning teen die Aussies in Perth behaal het. Twee jaar later word sy kop deur bykans elke oud-speler, sportkommentator en rusbankkenner geëis. Toegegee, Meyer het nie ’n Wêreldbekertoernooi beleef waaroor hy sy bors kan uitstoot nie. Om teen Japan te verloor, was vir elke Suid-Afrikaner ’n vernederende ondervinding. Maar die Bokke het darem ook nie hul vrotste Wêreldbekerveldtog beleef nie – ’n plek in die halfeindronde was skaflik. En die All Blacks het ons net met twee punte geklop. Dis ’n heelwat beter WB-rekord vir die Bokke as byvoorbeeld in 2011 en veral in 2003. Die grootste kritiek gaan oor die verbeeldinglose spel wat die Bokke vanjaar opgedis het: hoogskop- en stampkarrugby. Met dié benadering het Meyer nie baie rugbyvriende gewen nie. Maar of ’n mens jou kan vereenselwig met die “Heyneke moet val”-veldtog van twee oud-Bokke, wat géén bewese afrigtingrekords het nie, is ’n ander vraag. Hy verdien beter as om nou deur oud-spelers met lang messe bygekom te word. Dis die verkeerde manier om dié saak te hanteer.

Thanks to all who responded I just want to express my deep and sincere thanks to all who responded to my letter (“Sought: stroke support group”, TB 28 October). Firstly, thanks to TygerBurger for printing my letter. A big thanks to all who phoned and sent me SMSes. From the overwhelming response it is clear to me that many stroke victims and their spouses, who in my opinion are the true heroes, dearly need help and encouragement. For me personally the greatest encouragement was to hear success stories from those who managed to overcome their own situation and managed through sheer determination to fight back by setting small, realistic goals and in so doing gain a semblance of normality. The website www.strokesurvivors.org.za with George as its founder was most encouraging. He had a classic lame arm/leg stroke and walked from Messina in the North to Cape Town to raise awareness. City applications and your rights When “building” applications of any type (including developments which can affect heritage and sensitive areas) are sent by council to communities to comment on, please bear in mind that you have the full right to represent before subcouncil or appeal bodies regarding your application. This is especially important when the impact of the proposed development could have a negative impact on the community involved. The applications do not have

this clause, so communities are none the wiser. I have over the years asked for this clause to be inserted, but to date this has not been a feature in the applications. If you do not request this within your “comment/objection” phase, you cannot do so after the closing date. If you have submitted initial comment and you have not requested it, you can still notify in writing and if it is within the comment period, as stated on the application. Another feature which the general public at large are not aware of is the fact that anyone can attend the monthly subcouncil meetings. This is a good place to find out what is happening in your community with regards to a variety of issues. It’s as simple as contacting your council and finding out when and where the meeting is. Show respect to elderly; don’t push! I would like to suggest that one day each month is set aside and formally designated “Push-thePensioner” day. My reasoning behind this is quite simple and I am sure that everyone will agree with me that the concept is quite brilliant. As a pensioner myself, as well as being a recovering cancer patient, I believe that I’m eminently qualified to talk about this subject. Wherever elderly citizens go these days they are constantly pushed, shoved and knocked out of the way by robust young people who seem to be both bad tempered and in a terrible hurry.

In a way I feel sorry for these youngsters as they appear to be in a perpetual state of desperation and aggression. Happiness and a joy of life seem to have been lost in a fruitless search to satisfy their ego. Although children may not fall into this category, they have a more novel way of offending the elderly: they simply refuse to acknowledge that they exist and cheerfully try walk right through them. If we nominated one day each month as “Push-the-Pensioner Day”, all assaults on pensioners would have to be confined to this one day. This would leave the rest of the month relatively safe for pensioners to venture onto the streets and into the shopping malls without any fear of being knocked flying. Similarly, they would not be taken by surprise as they would know what to expect on these nominated days and, preferably, elect to stay at home. Seriously though, it’s a sad indictment on our society that the elderly and infirm are treated with so little respect and courtesy. COLIN SUTCLIFFE Email

Taki Amira, subraad 3-voorsitter, het in sy toespraak hulde aan Vink van Zyl gebring. “Ons kan vandag, en geslagte ná ons, die nalatenskap van oom Vink van Zyl hier geniet,” het hy gesê. Die Vink Greenbelt Association (VGA) se tesourier, André Venter, het verslag gedoen oor die arboretum se finansies. Volgens hom sal die tuin geldelik nog vir ’n ruk lank goed daar uitsien met sy huidige bankbalans van R40 000. Hy het ook genoem dat die tuin ’n verlies van R13 000 gely het in die afgelope finansiële boekjaar. Dít is teweeggebring deur ’n inkomste van R22 000 in donasies, en uitgawes van sowat R34 000. Oom Hannes Bosch het Elsa Smit en Ezra Ngozi uitgesonder in sy bedankings en genoem dat die instandhouding van die tuin nooit sonder húl en die Stad se hulp moontlik sou wees nie.

We need to give more of ourselves so we can bring joy to those in need. “Those of you receiving prizes are being acknowledged for bringing hope and joy to children, but it should also make you want to bring more to the table,” he said. One of the stars of the show was Huis Marie Louw in Somerset West, which won a number of prizes for their contribution to the project.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the room last Wednesday when a group of worthy seniors were awarded for their crafts for needy children. They are all part of the Age-in-Action organisation, which hosts the Pretty Things for Little Things project annually. Last Wednesday the group, sponsors and other interested parties came together for the provincial prize giving ceremony honouring the elderly involved for their time and efforts to make toys for children from needy communities. Adele Kruger Taljaard from Shoprite Checkers, the main sponsor since 2003, said a total of 17 203 toys were collected nationally this year. The winning entries lined the room in a colourful display, showing off the crocheting, knitting and woodwork talents of the entrants. othing says “relax” quite like a night out with loved ones, which possibly includes a movie, edibles, drinkables and some popcorn. And where movies are concerned, nothing quite says “movie experience” like the outdoor scene at any one of the highly enjoyable Galileo Open Air Cinema showings. The Galileo is now taking their balmy outdoors night time offers to even greater heights – quite literally – as they offer lovers of their brand the opportunity to watch movies during extended week days at a variety of breathtaking venues, including one on top of a city rooftop and many others in the lush green of the many Cape winelands. Last Wednesday movie-goers at the first of the season’s outdoor shows were treated to the movie Cocktail, very aptly preceded by shooters on the lawn before the start of the movie. By screening time the lawn was packed. The new Friday “movie menu” with the rotating venues include a screening on the first Friday of every month at the Palms in Woodstock. The second Friday of the month will see a screening at Central Park in Century City, while the third Friday’s screening will be held on the rooftop of the Fedisa building in the Cape Town CBD. The fourth Friday’s showing will be at the Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville and the fifth Friday will see a screening at the University of Cape Town in Rondebosch. On select Saturdays there will be showings in the Cape Winelands at Knorhoek, Lourensford, Anthonij Rupert, Warwich, Rhebokskloof, Rustenberg, Nederburg, Vergenoegd, Backsberg, Stellenbosch Vineyards, Boschendal and Zevenwacht. Plastic waste in, diesel fuel out DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

On Wednesday last week a group of engineers from Japan demonstrated how waste plastic fed into the one side of a conversion plant is spewed into a bottle on the other side and used to fuel a diesel powered vehicle. This jaw-dropping demonstration took place at the ribbon cutting of a plastics-to-oil conversion plant that opened at the Kraaifontein integrated waste management facility. A first of it kind in the country, this facility was made posible thanks to a $1 million donation by the Japanese government and the pyrolysis plant technology developed and supplied by Japanese companies CFP Corporation and Kanemiya Co. Ltd in a collaboration between the City of Cape Town and Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica). After two years of preparation and hard work this project will now enter a six-month pilot phase to gain insights into the commercial potential for creating fuel from plastic waste diverted from landfill sites. continues. “And as a key member of the international community, Japan has a duty to address global issues in developing countries.” This policy is motivated by the fact that 80% of the world’s seven billion population is currently living in developing countries. Mayco member for utility services, Ernest Sonnenberg, said: “Japan is a world leader in waste minimisation and applying their technology in a South African context aligns with the city’s commitment to a future that is more energy secure, resource efficient and resilient to the impact of climate change.” By using the existing structures in the form of its Think Twice recycling collection initiative, the City, with the technical assistance from the Japanese engineers, built on available resources to support the functioning of the plant. Tetsuya Sato, project manager from the CFP Corporation, briefly explained the process known as pyrolysis, which uses thermal treatment to convert plastic into fuel. “Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition of material at elevated tempera-

tures which involves the change of chemical composition. Three types of plastics – polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene, all mainly harvested from the recycling plant – are brought to the processing plant where it is washed, dried, extruded and shredded. It is then fed into a reactor where it is heated and cooled to be converted into oil.” The yield of 500kg of plastic materials per day works out to approximately 500 litres of fuel. These yields will be assessed by specialised technicians on site to determine the quality and quantity of fuel being produced in different combinations and ratios. “Ultimately, the aim is to test the best combinations to yield the highest quality.” Approximately 70% of fuel produced by the pilot plant will be channelled back into the running of the plant, powering the 150 kilowatt generator on site. The rest could be used to power any other machinery that run on diesel, if the oil is of a good quality. “The rising volumes of waste material produced in countries across the world represent a problem that cannot be ignored. They pose a threat to the health of the environment, and to humans. Sadly, we are united as a global community in this regard,” Sonnenberg said, expressing his hope that through this partnership the City will be able to explore possibillities and share ideas. According to Sonnenberg the amount of waste plastic as one of the major waste materials in South Africa, is increasing at a rate of 6%, while the City’s recycling rate at 16% is still low. Bellville man, his wife and their Volvo came home with a number of prizes from a national car show held recent-

ly. Wouter and Ingrid Wentzel’s light blue Volvo was voted the best of the lot at a gathering of Volvos at the car manufacturer’s national veteran show held at the Gariep Dam last weekend. Wouter and Ingrid entered their 1967 Volvo 122S into the yearly car show. After traveling 875 km to the venue, their blue “baby” competed with 42 like-minded car fanatics’ veteran four-wheelers, Wouter said. But as it happens, his and Ingrid’s Volvo came out tops. His car did not win one, but several, prizes at this annual get-together of the Volvo Owners’ Club of South Africa at the Forever Resort, which also served as venue for its national AGM. “Stuart Johnson from television fame (motor journalist) was the MC at a lovely prize-giving event on Saturday night,” Wouter said. At this ceremony, his 122S was awarded prizes for being the cleanest car at the show and it won the Tou Nel award for being the best standard 122. For being the most original classic Volvo, his car won the Tom Campher Award. “After being photographed in the winners circle on the Sunday morning, it was time to drive back to Cape Town in true ’60s fashion – no aircon!” Wouter laughed.

Autistic adolescents can get a life start here The new Life Start learning centre, a centre a Durbanville mother is starting in January for autistic adolescents and young adults, will be introduced at a meeting on Saturday 21 November at the Lutheran Church in Goodwood. The centre will specialise in educational services for adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum. They will be trained in independent living skills in a supportive and protective environment at the centre, says Lasea Erasmus, founder of the centre and mother of an 18-year-old autistic boy. “We aim to promote and develop independent living skills of daily living, self-determination and interpersonal skills, and

employment skills for each individual student,” Erasmus says. At the centre they will be taking the specific strengths of the adolescents and young adults into account as far as possible. “Our aim is to optimise autism in such a way that each student can develop meaningful interaction with his/her environment, allowing them to build the foundations for life long learning and a good quality life,” she says. The curriculum will form a broad base from which an individualised programme for each learner will be developed as far as possible. The daily programme is put together in

such a way that learners will get ample opportunity to practise newly learned skills. The emphasis will be on experiential learning of practical skills. The learners’ personal interests will also be incorporated into the daily programme to keep them motivated. No formal academic qualification is required, but an assessment of the student and an interview with parents or other caregivers will be required before placement. The Life Start centre will be open to all autistic patients between the age of 16 and 22, who meet the following requirements: able to communicate, follow verbal or written instructions, function in a group setting, and

use the bathroom independently. Although the centre will cater mainly for young persons on the autism spectrum, other young adults with learning barriers are also welcome to apply. The focus will be on life long learning of independent living skills, Erasmus says. The meeting starts at 14:00 at the Lutheran Church on the corner of Smart Road and Vasco Boulevard (opposite the N1 City Mall). Interested parents are invited to attend to get more information about the centre, and also to start a network group for parents of young autistic adults. Só vertel Werner Schwella, een van die organiseerders van die projek waarin daar jaarliks ’n lekkerdingetjie of twee vir seniors van Bellville en Brackenfell in ’n tweeliter-roomysbak verpak word. Met TygerBurger se vorige berig op 28 Oktober om die betrokke gemeenskappe tot hulp van dié projek te roep, was die mikpunt van R30 000 maar op ’n skamele R5 750. Werner het toe voorts in sy gemeenskapsnuusbrief mense aangemoedig om die projek te ondersteun. Hy vertel toe hy die state vir Oktober nagaan, het hy op dié skenking afgekom. “Die ongelooflike het gebeur in die maand van Oktober 2015 met die fondsinsamelingsprojek van die Top. Toe ek die maand die staat ontvang met die inbetalings, moes ek myself knyp, want ek kon nie glo wat ek sien nie,” vertel hy. Werner se woorde voor die skenking was dat dit die eerste jaar was “wat die fondse so stram inkom”. “Op 2 November ontvang ek die bankstaat van Elmarie Fourie, een van Top se bestuurslede wat ons elektroniese banksake hanteer, en nou moet ek met u eerlik wees – ek het die bankstaat so gekyk, weer gekyk, en wéér gekyk!” sê Werner. “Ek het die bankstaat toegemaak en weer oopgemaak, want ek kon nie glo wat ek sien nie. Volgens my het die wonderwerk toe plaasgevind en ek wil al die eer aan ons Hemelse Vader gee vir wat hier gebeur het,” vertel hy hartstogtelik in sy brief. “Hy het onmiddellik in ’n gebed aan ons Hemelse Vader dankie gesê dat Hy gesorg het vir wat gebeur het op die betrokke bankstaat. “Weer eens het ek besef hoe klein my geloof was,” sê hy. “In totaal het ons van Mei 2015 tot September 2015 R5 750 van Top se donateurs ingekry waarvoor ons baie dankbaar was. “Wat gebeur het in Oktober, het nog nooit voorheen gebeur in Top se bestaan nie, want ons het vir Oktober die ongelooflike bedrag van R24 990 ontvang – wat beteken dat ons tot 30 Oktober R30 740 in totaal ontvang het en die R 30 000-mikpunt met R740 oorskry het!” Werner se groot “wonderwerk” het op 7 Oktober gebeur toe die R20 000 inbetaal is. “Die bedrag kom van een donateur en die inskrywing op die bankstaat lees ‘Donasie’, en geen verwysing van wie die inbetaling gekom het nie.” Werner sê die woorde ontgaan hom om sy dank aan dié persoon of onderneming wat dié anonieme inbetaling gedoen het, uit te spreek. “Dit wys net dat daar mense of ondernemings is wat nog omgee wat met ons behoeftige seniors aan die gebeur is,” sê hy. “Aan die ander donateurs: Was dit ook nie vir u onderskeie bydraes nie, kon ons nie die mikpunt van R30 000 bereik het op 30 Oktober nie.”

R750m proposed to ease traffic crisis “I was fortunate – it took me five minutes to get here from the Civic Centre, but I am sure that some of you in the audience took the N1 from the northern suburbs this morning and probably travelled for 75 minutes to the city, if not longer,” said executive mayor Patricia de Lille on Thursday morning after arriving at the Congestion Summit, hosted by Transport for Cape Town, the City’s transport authority. During her address she proposed that the City put forward an amount of R750 million over a period of five years for road infrastructure projects to address the issue of traffic congestion. Areas pinpointed by her as pressure points included the Kuils River area around Bottelary, Amandel and Saxdown roads, and the Blaauwberg area around Plattekloof, Blaauwberg and Sandown roads. In 2013, the TomTom global traffic index revealed that Cape Town was the most congested city in South Africa, with a global ranking at 55th place. The survey also revealed that motorists are spending an extra 71% of their time in traffic. “We are also the fastest growing city in the country, with a growth rate of 30% as the 2011-Census recorded. Congestion comes at a great cost, with time and money being lost, but also in terms of pollution and its long-term effect on our living envi-

ronment,” she said. De Lille said that the different spheres of government and the private sector will have to work together to find economically sustainable long-term solutions to ensure that we meet the travel demands of a population which is predicted to increase to approximately 5,6 million by 2032. Transport for Cape Town’s latest statistics confirm that the morning peak-hour period on the city’s major arteries has already increased from 07:00 to 09:00 (two hours) to the current 06:00 to 10:00 (four hours) within two years. “We also see that more and more residents are leaving their houses at 05:00 in the morning to avoid traffic congestion on their way to work. The current situation, as some of you experience on a daily basis, is already untenable. We have to act.” Further pressure points that the congestion programme will be covering include congestion along the M3, M5, N1 and N2 freeways, the V&A Waterfront and foreshore. “We will propose that the R750 million be spent in accordance with a congestion management programme – a document that is being finalised to be approved by council by the end of the year and which prioritises the congestion points across the city.”

Nurse with a vision A former Brackenfell resident was crowned top nurse at the provincial health department’s annual Cecilia Makiwane Nurses Recognition awards at a ceremony in Stellenbosch on Friday. Denise Booysen won this top accolade for her “Mission for Vision” project after she identified the need for affordable glasses. The former Brackenfeller collected recycled glasses from other community members who no longer required their old glasses and with the help of local optometrists, those requiring glasses were sent for eye tests and received spectacles without cost to the community, according to a health department statement. Among the nominees for the coveted award were two exceptional nurses from the northern suburbs, Christiana Shilder from Karl Bremer hospital and Bertha Bailey from Tygerberg hospital. Dannalene Noach, from Kraaifontein, who works at the Mitchell’s Plain hospital, was also selected as a nominee. The ceremony on Friday gave recognition to the roles played by nurses, according to the statement. The award, meant to motivate and inspire nurses by recognising and rewarding service delivery excellence, was handed over by provincial health minister Dr Nomafrench Mbombo and HOD Dr

Beth Engelbrecht. Christiana Schilder’s main passions are chronic diseases, sex education, drug abuse, teenage pregnancies, HIV and community outreach, the statement reads. “She focuses on education of both nurses as well as the broader community, striving to ensure the creation of a therapeutic milieu. She assists in fundraising events which are used to lighten up the lives of the community in Kalkfontein (in Kuils River). “Community outreach is high on her agenda in the sense that she supplies food and clothing to the needy.” Bertha Bailey was nominated for her passion and contribution towards “taking the tragedy out of transplants”, according to the statement. “She was part of the team who, in a groundbreaking operation, performed the first successful penile transplant in the world. “She was instrumental in sourcing a potential donor as she undertook to obtain clearance and consent from the family to use the organs, as part of the project. Her role also included counselling clients in their mother tongue, informed them about the medication and treatment regime, monitoring and detailed reports of the patients.”

Sewe maande later op 20 April 2005 open Die Boer sy deure in Durbanville. “Dit was ongelooflik,” vertel Jurgen. “Ek’t teen daai tyd al vyf jaar vir ’n venue gesoek. Ek’t ’n paar ampervennote gehad, maar hulle het almal net probleme gesien en nie die oplossings nie. En toe kom Margit op my pad,” vertel Jurgen terwyl hy skalks na haar loer. Volgens Margit het sy ’n versteekte agenda gehad. “Onthou, ek was hengse verlief en Jurgen het in daai stadium amper permanent oorsee gewerk. Hoe gouer ons ’n plek kon kry, hoe gouer sou ek hom meer kon sien,” spot sy. Hulle onthou die begindae soos gister. Die tye wat hulle deurnag gewerk het om betyds te kon oopmaak. Hulle het albei die scars as ’n bewys. “Ek onthou een aand toe Jurgen by die huis gekom het met so ’n massiewe oop wond op sy rug. Record raised for music kids A record total of R150 356 was raised with a charity auction presented by Belmet, a steel engineering company in Bellville, on 31 October at the Kronendal Boutique Wine Cellar outside Durbanville. This was the fourth annual social responsibility function held by Belmet. The event included a charity auction to raise funds for the local farm schools and underprivileged children. Musically talented and underprivileged children, all students at the Kronendal Music Academy, had the opportunity to not only “jam” with renowned local musician Albert Frost, but to also learn from him. The children also received guitars, backpacks, music books and T-shirts. “All monies received from the auction will make an immediate difference in our contributions to local and nominated charities,” said Pieter Kroon, managing director of Belmet. “We at Belmet are continually inspired by the dedication and generosity of all involved who answer the call to give again and again,” he said.

Jy moet ook weet wie jou teikenmark is,” brei Margit uit. “Nog iets interessants wat ons besef het, is dat mense bo ’n sekere ouderdom se hoofstokperdjie is om lekker te gaan uiteet. Ons het besef as ons goeie shows het én goeie kos, kan ons net wen,” voeg Jurgen by. Hulle wou ’n plek skep waar hulle self graag sou wou kuier. “En ons hou van lekker eet, goeie wyn en geselskap saam met musiek en teater in dieselfde intieme ruimte,” sê Jurgen. Die Boer het nie ’n grand opening gehad nie. Op 20 April 2005 het Valiant Swart die eerste kunstenaar geword wat hier opgetree het. Die aand was uitverkoop. “Jy sien, ons verkoop shows. Ons is nie ’n restaurant nie, maar ’n teaterrestaurant. Meeste restaurante het ’n rakleeftyd. Die Boer vernuwe saam met die kunstenaars,” sê Jurgen. “Ons het probeer tel – ons het al meer as 3 050 shows in tien jaar gehad.”

Hulle is baie dank verskuldig aan hul lojale personeel, die kunstenaars én hul lojale kliënte. “Sjef is amper al nege jaar hier. Die dag as hy loop, loop ek,” sê Margit. Sy verwys na Jean Louis Geldenhuys, wat die kombuis met “militêre presiesie beplan en beheer”. “Jean Louis en sy span weet hoe om kwaliteit, smaaklike kos bekostigbaar en konsekwent te hou. Twee van ons kombuispersoneel, Londwabo en Boniswa, is al vanaf dag een deel van Die Boer. “Elke aand, in ’n kwessie van ’n uuren-’n-half, kry almal hul kos. Dit wil gedoen wees,” sê Jurgen. Die feit dat Die Boer se topkliënt al meer as 175 keer by die venue kom kuier het, spreek boekdele. Só ook die feit dat hulle top-100 almal meer as 50 keer Die Boer besoek het. Oor die afgelope 10 jaar het baie van die kunstenaars al “soos familie geraak” en vir baie van hulle het Die Boer hul teatertuiste geword. “As kunstenaar is dit vir my ’n eer, voorreg en groot plesier om by Die Boer op te tree. ’n Mens voel tuis en veilig daar, wetende dat die teater bestuur word deur twee mense wat teater lief het en verstaan en deeglik ken. Ek weet dis nie net ek wat so voel nie, honderde kunstenaars sal met my saamstem,” sê Amanda Strydom. Hennie van Greunen beskryf dit so: “As ek aan Die Boer dink: Klein verhoog. Groot hart.” Wicus van der Merwe som dit dalk die beste op in sy gediggie: Dis die infamous groen backstage bank Dis die donkerbeligte verhoog van swart geverfde plank Dis waiters wat hardloop met kos en drank Dis die eet, dis die gesels, die voorshow rumoer Dis die deurgetrapte matte op die plankvloer Dis showtime Dit is Die Boer.
