Vusi Pikoli, het verlede week die noordelike voorstede van Kaapstad besoek om sy kantoor se werksaamhede te bespreek. Hy het lede van verskeie plaaslike GPF’s by die Durbanville-biblioteeksaal toegespreek. Pikoli, die destydse hoof van die Nasionale Vervolgingsgesag, is in 2007 deur oud-president Thabo Mbeki geskors nadat hy aan die spits was van kriminele klagtes teen die eertydse polisiehoof, Jackie Selebi. Hy is later finaal in die pad gesteek ná hy kriminele klagtes teen president Jacob Zuma aanhangig gemaak het. Pikoli is in Desember 2014 deur Helen Zille, die Wes-Kaapse premier, aangestel as polisieombudsman in dié provinsie. Hoewel die kantoor se werksaamhede nog nie ten volle operasioneel is nie – tot en met die promulgasie

van regulasies wat later vanjaar verwag word – het die kantoor sy deure in Januarie reeds oopgemaak vir klagtes. Sedertdien is sowat 150 klagtes ontvang, waarvan 53 afgehandel is. Pikoli het verduidelik dat dié kantoor in stand gebring is kragtens die Wes-Kaapse Gemeenskapsveiligheidswet, waarmee die provinsie ingevolge die konstitusie kan aanspraak maak om die polisie in die Wes-Kaap verantwoordbaar te hou. “Hierdeur word ons bemagtig om toesig te hou en enige klagtes in verband met polisiedienslewering te ondersoek, met die doelstelling om terselfdertyd wedersydse respek tussen die polisie en die gemeenskap te bevorder,” het hy gesê. “Dit sal ons in staat stel om stelselmislukkings binne die polisiediens te identifiseer met die doelwit om volhoubare oplossings daarvoor te vind.” In teenstellling met die Onafhanklike Polisie-ondersoekdirektoraat (Opod) wat slegs polisie-optrede met betrekking tot kriminele elemente ondersoek, sal dié ombudsman aangeleenthede ondersoek wat met dienslewering verband hou. Vyftienjarige leerder is deur gewapende rowers in ’n motor in Boston oorval en van haar selfoon en skoolfonds beroof. Dié kind, ’n gr. 9-leerder aan The Settlers High in Bellville, was verlede Donderdagmiddag op pad huis toe ná skool toe vier mans in ’n silwer kar langs haar stilhou en haar met ’n vuurwapen dreig. Die groep het ook die R100 by haar geneem. Volgens Christélle Ekron, ’n inwoner naby waar die voorval plaasgevind het, is die meisie omstreeks 15:00 in Agste Laan beroof.

This essential service to animal hospitals across the province and country has been run by Dr Annie Singh at the Tygerberg Animal Hospital (TAH) in Kenridge since 2011. Singh calls the Tygerberg Pet Blood Donor Clinic her “baby”. “We supply many of the animal hospitals in the Western Cape with blood, but there is a hospital in Pretoria which also has a blood bank,” she says. “I guess you could say we share the burden to supply animal hospitals across the country.” Singh says just last week some of their donor blood was sent off to Vredenburg and even Port Elizabeth, as well as Pretoria. “We have 60 clients [donors], mainly dogs and about 10 cats. Bellville teacher off to ‘space’ with NASA A

Kingdom Skies provide farm school pupils a galactic view

he children of The Valley Primary School on Altydgedacht farm outside Durbanville took part in a mobile digital planetarium project, presented by Kingdom Skies recently. Kingdom Skies is an astro adventure and educational service provider that runs a mobile planetarium and stargazing programmes in the Western Cape. “We focus on bringing science and technology resources to schools and youth groups in various communities,” says Kingdom Skies director Ricardo Adams. “Most of us are familiar with the six kingdoms of life – we bring you the kingdom of the skies, a world unknown to most of us,” he says.

The mobile digital planetarium called “The King-Dome” was launched in October 2013. Its mission is to create a space to stimulate interest in astronomy by inspiring their audience to discover and investigate their place in the universe. “We offer educational presentations that are Caps friendly and give the learners an opportunity to ‘travel’ to the planets and become an astronaut for a day. We have been successfully in orbit for more than a year now around your atmosphere,” quips Adams. “We eliminate expensive time consuming excursions, transportation expenses and the stress of transporting children by bus,” Adams says.

Progress at Pampoenkraal project

he Pampoenkraal heritage square upgrade project in Durbanville is making good progress, according to the City. The aim of this R10-million upgrade project is to create a robust, multi-purpose public square that can be transformed from a playful water park for small children to an exhibition space or concert venue, while also acting as a civic space at the entrance to the Durbanville CBD. The City of Cape Town identified erf 699 (bounded by Main, Wellington, Voortrekker, and Church Streets) in Durbanville and its surrounds as an ideal location for the creation of a dignified public space. The site, which accommodates the town hall, has a rich history, having played an important role in the development of Durbanville, originally known as Pampoenkraal. “Through the upgrade of the Pampoenkraal heritage square, we aim to create a quality civic and recreational precinct within the Durbanville CBD to promote business as well as encourage community activities within this heritage-rich area of our city,” said mayco member for energy, environmental and spatial planning, Johan van der Merwe.

“Residents and visitors have much to look forward to as the project promises to uplift and reinvigorate the area,” said Van der Merwe. The first phase of the project, which focused only on the Voortrekker Road area, has been completed. Construction started in February 2015 which entailed replacing paving on both sides of Voortrekker Road, paving the road surface, installing and replacing services and installing tree planters and irrigation. “Voortrekker Road has been incorporated into the space to allow business to relate more directly to the site. Restaurants located on this edge will eventually be encouraged to utilise the areas in front of their shops for extra seating as the road has been semi-pedestrianised,” he said. The second phase will start in the next few months and will include the completion of the main square. This will entail resurfacing the square, planting trees, imple-

mentation a water feature, installing a public art installation, constructing an amphitheatre and installing public lighting. The City aims to complete this next phase within 12 months from commencing construction. “As the site contains a rich history, a large portion of the design was influenced by elements that made up a historic outspan. These include a spring, water furrow, a feeding and drinking trough, and evidence of human movement and activity connected to the establishment of early farms. For example, the introduction of water as a major design element celebrates the historic fountain located nearby and the presence of water as a founding element of the town.”

The water feature takes the form of shallow flowing streams with occasional small fountains, creating a safe place where children can play. The water feature is fed from the nearby spring and is clean water that flows into the shallow streams and drains back into the existing stormwater system. This design also celebrates the town hall, an important heritage feature, by creating a forecourt where activities such as exhibitions or events can spill out into the exterior space. The area in front of the town hall has been re-conceptualised as an amphitheatre. Furthermore, the space will include sheltered areas to sit, while steps and ramps allow easy movement across the site.

Greatest danger lurks in the home One in every two women killed are murdered by their partner. Research by the Medical Research Council, mapping trends over a decade, shows murder by a relative or loved one, often referred to as intimate female homicide, has become the leading cause of women being killed. Researchers found little had been recorded in police dockets on prior abuse history. This is alarming, as murder is seldom the first act of violence against an intimate partner. Perhaps if a history of abuse had been recorded, the murder could have been prevented. Children don’t fare much better. More than two children are murdered in South Africa every day, according to the 2011/12 crime statistics. Our rate of child homicide is more than double the global average, according to the World Health Organisation. Over a third of these murders take place in the child’s home and more than a third of children are killed by someone they know. There was also a high rate of sexual assault in these cases. In fact, over 50 children are raped daily in our country, according to the 2013/14 crime statistics. And these are just the reported cases. These statistics should scare you. They should leave you feeling disturbed. They should spur you to action, either to leave a dangerous situation or help those who find themselves in one. Hiding behind your curtains is no longer an option. Preventing these atrocities is everyone’s concern.

Wines win ‘unusual’ categories T

hree of Durbanville Hills’ wines from their reserve Rhinofields range have won awards at the 2015 Sommelier Selection wine competition. The 2012 Rhinofields Chardonnay took the trophy in the “full and rich” category whilst the 2014 Rhinofields Sauvignon Blanc and 2013 Rhinofields Noble Late Harvest were each shortlisted in the categories “elegant and classy” and “sticky’s” respectively. With just under 400 wines judged blind by two panels consisting of three sommeliers each with one associate, the wines were evaluated not by grape varietal but more by the style and price point. According to organisers, the aim of the competition is to find the best, most dynamic wines available on the market, judged on their food appropriateness. The competition, a first for the South African wine industry, is judged solely by a panel of South African sommeliers and in categories, although unusual, which reflect the design of a wine list for a restaurant and hotel. These include house wines, fresh crunchy whites, voluptuous rich reds as well as beer, cider and international wine. Delighted cellar master Martin Moore said the reserve range from Durbanville Hills truly reflects the unique terroir of the area.

Dít is die planne van die Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans (SBA) om binnekort Afrikaansdag te vier. “Kom vier Afrikaansdag, 14 Augustus, met dapper en stapper saam met ons op Saterdag 15 Augustus met ’n pretloop in die Bo-Kaap,” nooi dr. Niël le Roux, SBA-direkteur. Le Roux sê die roetes wat gestap sal word, is die twee “dr. Achmat Davids”-roetes van onderskeidelik 4 km en 8 km, met die omdraaipunt vir die 8 km-roete by die alombekende middagknal van die kanon op Seinheuwel en natuurlik die gepaardgaande “verruklike uitsig oor Kaapstad”. Die doel van die pretstap is om as fondswerwing vir die vele projekte van die SBA te dien. Le Roux voeg by dat daar voldoende parkering in Buitengrachtstraat en binne die Christiaan Barnard-hospitaal se parkeerterrein beskikbaar sal wees. Frog talk at FOTH Join the Friends of Tygerberg Hills for a presentation on the province’s “phenomenal” amphibeans. The talk will be presented by Clifford Dorse, the City’s biodiversity coordinator. Dorse will share his knowledge on “Phenomenal Frogs of the Western Province”, and he will focus mainly on Cape Town’s incredible frog population. Youth wrestles to get to the Olympics DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

young man from Fisantekraal has big dreams – he plans to represent South Africa at the 2016 Olympic Games. Marno Plaatjies, a wrestler affiliated to the Olympians Sport Academy (OSA), was recently elected to represent South Africa at the Spanish Open Tournament in July this year, pushing him closer to achieving his Olympic dream. The 23-year-old, who started wrestling in 2006, is in training to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games. “My participation in Spain is part of my preparation to go to the World Championship in Las Vegas in September, where I hope to qualify for the Olympic Games,” he says.

Upliftment The OSA works to uplift children from the rural areas of Fisantekraal, Klipheuwel, Joostenberg Vlakte and Philadelphia through the sport of wrestling. Their assistance extends to offering transport to training facilities, tournaments, food and wrestling gear. “Marno is one of our rising stars. We are extremely proud of his achievements and wish him the best of luck in Spain. The main purpose of the OSA is to reach the youth and teach them that one can follow a different lifestyle, have dreams and accomplish them,” says OSA secretary Wendy Bosse. “Because of the area that I lived in, if I did not become involved in wrestling I would most probably have fallen into gangsterism and alcohol or drug abuse as these are the norm for Fisantekraal’s

youth,” says Marno. “Wrestling has taught me to be motivated and dedicated to what I do and to be able to make the right choices even if I am faced by challenges. “Wrestling has taught me that you can still have a dream and follow that dream. It has opened many doors for me and put me in a position from which I was able to get a sponsor to go study. It taught me to rise above my circumstances and become a better person,” says Marno. “It also gave me the opportunity to travel to many places overseas and see other countries, something that would not have been possible if I did not become involved in the sport.” Local business Durbell Marno Pharmacies and Tiny van Schalkwyk have helped make this possible for Marno. They’ve been sponsors of the OSA, which has been in partnership with Olympians Social Development and Education (OSDE), since 2007. “They have made a huge contribution over the years and also assist when we have wrestlers who need to take part internationally and we have a shortfall.” Marno, who lived with his grandmother and aunt in Fisantekraal, has since obtained his Diploma in Coaching Science at the Exercise Teachers Academy in Stellenbosch.

Further training “We have about eight wrestlers who have stayed with us since 2006 and they all come from rural

These wrestlers have been trained as coaches and we use them to coach the other children in the communities,” said Bosse. “We had three wrestlers who represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. One of our girls, Norma Gordon from Klipheuwel was the first junior woman to win a medal at the Africa Championships.” Tiny van Schalkwyk, general manager at Durbell Pharmacies, says it’s an honour for them to be involved with the OSA and OSDE. “It’s heart-warming to see just how much these kids benefit and develop through their involvement. We’re extremely proud of Marno and wish him the best of luck.”

Sunny breakfast induction for Rotary The Rotary clubs of Bellville, Durbanville, Oostenberg and Tygerberg recently arranged a combined function to induct their incoming presidents. “There are strong bonds of friendship and support among the four clubs and they work together on a number of community pro-

jects,” the clubs stated. “This time of the year when the weather is wet and cold it often affects an evening function. Thus it was decided to get together for a hearty breakfast.” The clubs enjoyed a sunny morning among well presented Rotarians and friends.

“The Durbanville club used the opportunity to present district governor Cecil Rose with a Paul Harris Sapphire award for his unfailing service to Rotary and the community. The presentation was done by Past President Bert Parker, who introduced a young Cecil Rose to Rotary,” stated the clubs.

The Baxter Dance Festival is calling for applications for the 2015 line-up. Following the resounding success of the dance festival’s tenth anniversary last year, the organisers are calling for entries from dance studios, schools, companies, groups and independent dance-makers, as well as proposals from choreographers (including a DVD of recent work) for this year’s event. The 2015 Baxter Dance Festival will take place from Thursday 8 to Saturday 17 October. The festival is made up of a main programme which will consist of invited and commissioned works, as well as work by established professional choreographers and companies. The off-main programme on Saturday 10 October will showcase work by up-and-coming choreographers (including student work) while the fringe programme on Saturday 17 October will include work by youth groups, dance schools, school groups, traditional dance groups and others. The running time for each dance work is limited to ten minutes for the main programme, five minutes for the off-main programme and three minutes (fringe) for solos, duets or trios. The limit for quartets or bigger ensembles is 20 minutes on the main, ten off-main and seven on the fringe. The Baxter Theatre Centre will provide a comprehensive production package which includes lighting, sound, technical assistance, publicity, box office facilities, printed programmes and pre-show rehearsal arrangements, making it a hassle-free

Radio winner smiles A

local radio station has put more than a smile on a listern’s face. Delft resident Rayne Smith’s life changed on Thursday 18 June when the 55-year-old became the big winner in Bobby and Lindy’s Cash Call Back on Smile 90.4fm. Smith earned a hefty R90 400. The station’s SMS competition line has been singing over the past three weeks as listers have been scrambling to enter in the hope of winning their share of the R200 000 up for grabs. There were 60 prizes; four winners a day and one person guaranteed to bank the R90 400. During the competition there were nail-biting moments when the first name drawn to

win the big cash prize did not come forward in time to claim it. The Smile Breakfast team was holding their breath as the computer then randomly selected another name from the more than 62 000 SMSs – that of Rayne Smith, who quickly called the studio from his employer’s office. An overjoyed Rayne battled to find words to express his excitement and gratitude when Lindy announced he would be collecting a R90 400 cheque. Thanks to this unexpected windfall, this Delft resident can now resume building his house after a lack of funds halted construction. Not only will he soon move into his own home but will also be able to pay for the wedding he has been planning for a long time.

he Lilliput Children’s Theatre Company will be performing their popular Goldilocks and the Three Bears at the Nassau Theatre during the school holidays. This children’s classic follows the adventure of Goldilocks in the forest before her birthday. Her grandfather is organizing a Birthday party for Goldilocks, but she gets lost in the woods and stumbles across a house belonging to the three bears. With nobody home, Goldilocks goes inside and makes herself comfortable. The three bears come home to find their visitor fast asleep with hilarious consequences. This enchanting fairytale classic is full of laughter, audience participation and is great fun for the whole family to enjoy.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears is adapted and directed by Elton John Duffy, who has been producing children’s theatre for 22 years. ape Town funny man Marc Lottering will be among the local stars on stage at Bellville Civic Theatre on Sunday 26 July for the annual Want ons Kan/’Cause we Can! charity concert. TygerBurger is the media sponsor for the concert that each year sees local celebrities offer their time at no cost in aid of three different charities. Every cent generated through tickets sales for this year’s concert will go to Project Dignity, Fisantekraal Centre for Development and CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation. “It’s good to do good,” Marc says of his involvement with the initiative. When he isn’t lending his voice to charity, the stand-up comedian is touring the country with his new show My Favourite Stories. The one-man show features some of his new material, along with his favourite stories from previous shows. Marc will also be acting as the “Minister of the Cape, Retail Therapy and Statues” when he joins some of the country’s other top comedians at the Nandos Mass Hysteria Comedy Parliament at Artscape Theatre in October. Known for the host of zany characters he brings to the stage, like Aunty Merle, the housewife from Belgravia Road and Smiley the “taxi gaartjie”, Marc describes his brand of comedy as “Hair-raising”. Motor muscle sets stars spangling ADRIAN PHEIFFER

he bumper 4th of July Independence Day meeting at Killarney on Saturday is a unique American themed package. It combines the razzmatazz of Yankee tanks, Ford Mustangs, chromed Harleys, the Star Spangled Banner and Billy Joel’s, “she’s like a rocket on the fourth of July”, all combined in the fifth round of the Power Series sponsored by Wingfield Motors. As far as racing goes, the All American one-make V8 Masters category, with cars unashamedly based on the Ford Mustang of old being redesigned for the track and built by Owen Ashley in his factory/workshop at Killarney, will take pride of place. Powered by modified V8 engines producing 325kW of power through the rear wheels and driven by superstars like multiple former South African Superkart champion Marcel Angel, sometime Supercar titleholder Richard Schreuder, Craig Jarvis, Fabio Tafani and Franco Donadio, the racing is almost always close and dangerous. With reigning Formula Supercar champion Nick Adcock possibly absent, the door in this category could open for young Dayne

Angel, who has been in fine form. Others to watch include Brad Wadeley, Andrew Moffitt and Gareth Easom. But the biggest entry and some of the best racing can be expected in the Midas Club-

man events from front runners like spectacular Danie van Niekerk in his Wingfield Beemer, Nieyaaz Modack (BMW), Jesse Huggett (VW Jetta) and Andre Johnson (Audi Quattro).

The 4th of July Independence Day meeting at Killarney on Saturday is a unique American themed package.

The rookie to watch is going to be 15-yearold Joshua Dolinschek in the Formula Libre single seater class. Still too young to (legally) drive on public roads, Joshua was impressive as he dominated the first two rounds in which he competed earlier this season. However, he was well beaten by Julian van der Watt in a more powerful car at the most recent meeting. It will be interesting to see how he fares during the meeting on Saturday. At the other end of the scale, the popular 54-year-old Danie (van Killarney) Maritz is a veteran motorcyclist astride the same GSX-R750 Suzuki that carried him to victory in the 1987 Western Province championship. Incredibly though, this super-fit rider is lapping even faster now than he did more than 28 years ago. Aimed at the whole family, the day is also going to include a Breakfast Run for street legal motorcycles, a kiddies playground manned by minders and an American style hot-dog eating contest in the clubhouse. There are 18 races for cars and motorcycles on the programme, the first of which is due off after final practise and qualifying sessions at 10:00.

IGT Cape gets Mahoney back in the swing There was no mistaking the smile on Trevor Mahoney’s face when he birdied the 18th at Kuils River Golf Club to claim victory in the Kuils River Classic last Wednesday. The Pearl Valley golfer put on a classy performance on his way to a four-under 68 and a two-stroke victory on 10-under-par 206 over reigning Curro SA Juniors International champion Altin van der Merwe on the IGT Cape. “This is such a big monkey off my back,” said Mahoney as he hoisted the R12 000 winner’s cheque sponsored by The House of Machines. “I came here with a very specific game plan and I executed it. I feels really great to get the job done again.” Van der Merwe, from Bellville Golf Club, closed with a 67 to finish second, while Sunshine Tour champions Christiaan Basson (67) and Peter Karmis (68) and Boland amateur Armandt Scholtz (70) shared third on 209. Overnight leader Matthew Kent slipped to joint sixth on 210 after a 73 with Rhys West (70).

Mahoney made a name for himself on the amateur circuit before he turned pro in 2010, but lack of funds forced the SAGDB graduate to take back his amateur status two years later. “I started working at Pearl Valley Golf Estates and I competed for Boland until some people at Pearl Valley offered to finance my return to the pro circuit,” he explained. He promptly won the Vusi Ngubeni Qualifying School in January to secure his Sunshine Tour card for the 2015 season, but after six months of missed cuts, Mahoney was running out of patience. He entered the Kuils Rivier Classic hoping to find a way to get back on track. “The frustrating thing is that I’m not playing poorly,” he said. “My game is solid, but I’m not scoring. It starts wearing you down when you are playing well and consistently, but constantly missing the cut. It made sense to me to play the IGT Cape while the Sunshine Tour is on a break, because I needed to

break this streak. “I knew there would be pressure this week because we had a really strong field. Peter and Christiaan are very experienced and Rhys has been making waves on the Sunshine Tour. There was a bunch of other Sunshine Tour pros competing, so I knew the pressure would be on.” Mahoney set himself two goals for the week – to start with a red number and finish in double figures. “The IGT Tour guys set the courses up tough so amateurs can get used to what to expect on the Sunshine Tour,” he said. “Breaking par would tick the first box.” “I had 14 birdie chances in that second round, but I only made two,” he said. “I kept myself in the mix because I stayed patient and didn’t make mistakes. “Setting goals is very important and ticking the boxes has really given me a boost of confidence. I know I can turn my season around, so I just need to take this win and feed off it in my next start on the Sunshine Tour.”

eing the only female cyclist to be inducted in the Legends of the Pedal hall of fame is nothing short of remarkable. But Cathy Carstens has had a superb career that began back in 1984 and at the age of 52 this Brackenfell resident is still on her bike, with no intention of quitting anytime soon. “Before I started cycling I was a Western Province 800m athlete, but a serious knee injury forced me to quit and that is how I started cycling,” said Cathy. Her list of achievements reads like the perfect script. In 1985 she set the 3000m South African track record and won over 300 fun rides between 1985 and 1990. In 1985 she won the mixed tandem section of the Argus Cycle Tour. The following year she broke the Argus record for women by more or less 30 minutes. “I still remember that day, everything was just going very well and I can’t remember the precise time, but I beat the record by about half an hour. After that dream race, I won it for the next four consecutive years.” After winning the national championships in 1990, Cathy took a 12-year break in which she raised her two children and starting her own physiotherapy practice in Brackenfell where she is still working with top sportsmen and women including Mariska Strauss who won the 2014 African XCO MTB champion, Peter-John Waterboer (SA schools hurdler), Alicia Visser (WP tug of war), Zeeke Norris (K1 kickboxer) and Jonathan Forlee (national under-20 basketball player), to name a few.

After her 12-year absence she made a comeback at the age of 41. Two years later, competing with the best in the country, she showed her class by being ranked second in South Africa. Further accolades include gold medals at the South African Veteran championships from 2007 to 2010. She took silver at the World Cup in Austria in 2005 and 2006 and gold in 2009. At the World Veteran UCI Road champs in Austria she claimed silver in 2005 and 2006 and won gold in 2008. One of her proudest moments remains her overall Western Province Cyclist of the Year award back in 2008. “What made this award so special for me was the fact that the award was for both men and women. So to walk away with that award being acknowledge the very best cyclist irrespective of gender was fantastic. “I have overcome many injuries in my life and I have realised if you never give up everything exists as a possibility,” says Cathy.

Cathy Carstens is the only female cyclist to be included in the Legends of the Pedal hall of fame.
