Teams wrote their programmes for their prebuilt basic robot to complete certain tasks before the competition, but they were not allowed to store it on their robots – it had to be rewritten on the day of the competition. Points were allocated for the robots’ ability to complete various challenges.

Durbanville het tans twee sulke skoonmaakspanne, bestaande uit ’n voorman en twee werkers. Hulle maak strate skoon, tel rommel op, verwyder graffiti en maak plekke (“hotspots”) skoon waar mense urineer en ontlas. Die geld hiervoor word deur twee kerke voorsien, maar Mes bestuur waar dié spanne hul werk moet doen. Dit word in samewerking met die Stad gedoen, het sy gesê. Die sopkombuis, wat sedert Augustus 2013 vanuit ’n skeepshouer op die terrein van die NG Kerk Durbanville bedryf is, is sedert 7 April vanjaar tydelik gesluit ná klagtes oor asosiale gedrag van die straatmense wat die sopkombuis besoek. Die straatmense het glo onder meer in die openbaar urineer op die kerkperseel, wat reg langs die Laerskool Durbanville geleë is. Daar was ook klagtes van ontlasting wat soggens verwyder moes word nadat van die haweloses by die kerk begin oornag het. Hulle het ook glo bedags in die omgewing rondgeslenter en ouers wat hul kinders by die skool kom haal, lastig geval. Die verskuiwing van die sopkombuis is verwelkom deur inwoners van die Aand-

Crèche remains empty ESMÉ ERASMUS

he grass is totally overgrown – almost knee-length – at the brand new R4 million Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre in Fisantekraal, despite it having been officially handed over to the City of Cape Town in February this year. Yet no little feet are roaming its grounds, there’s no laughter and shrieks on the playground. The facility in Boy Briers Road, which can accommodate 165 children from infants to Grade R, was the result of a successful partnership between four major companies in the Western Cape and the Garden Cities Archway Foundation. An amount of R1,7 million was donated by companies Afrimat, Corobrik, Joostenberg and Ciolli Brothers for the construction of the crèche on land donated by the City. The Garden Cities Archway Foundation then matched the donation. The centre consists of five classrooms, an office and staff room and a committee room. There is a large kitchen, ablution

facilities and an enclosed courtyard. The City was criticised at the handover in February for taking eight months to sign the agreement. The advertising for service providers closed on 13 March. That was followed by an appeal period of 30 days, ending on 13 April. Now, five months after the handover, no operator has yet been appointed to run the facility. On enquiry, Suzette Little, mayoral committee member for social development and early childhood development, said there was no problem. “We are still finalising the internal supply chain management processes,” she said. According to Little, a report will be served before subcouncil 7 (Koeberg) in August to solicit comment on the appointment process. TygerBurger was informed that the application by one of the current crèche owners has been approved but no contract has been signed. verely opposed to the ECD centre, but that has been resolved, said Little. “The City has secured their support for the programme through constructive dialogue and engagement with the local ECD forum members,” she said. “The centre has already been equipped with essential ECD resource materials in preparation for its opening,” said Little. “We have a contractor on site to finalise the assembly of office furniture and other equipment. “We expect it to be operational by early September, after the completion of all regulatory aspects relating to the supply chain management processes,” she said. The forum chairperson, Monica Abrahams, earlier told TygerBurger that one of their concerns was road safety as the location of the crèche was adjacent to the minibus taxi rank on busy Boy Briers Road. It is important to address disordered eating and to diagnose EDs early and correctly.Up to 45% of people struggle with disordered eating, while 4% suffer from EDs. Almost 35% of the population struggles with obesity! Although concerns about weight, body size and shape play a role in all EDs,the underlying trigger may include cultural and family pressures, emotional disorders, genetics, and biological factors.Medication may contribute to appetite dysregulation, but this is not common. EDs and obesity are real – and treatable! A treatment plan should be individualised according to the individual’s particular needs and strengths, and the severity of the specific problem. The most effective and long-lasting treatment for EDs is psychotherapy (individual therapy and family counselling) in combination with healthy lifestyle changes. It is also important to evaluate the individual for co-occurring depression, anxiety, and other mental and physical problems – where medication has a potentially important role to play. A healthy diet is sufficient to sustain physical and mental health, but should not persistently exceed the requirements of the body, spirit and mind. Enjoyment of food and regular exercise (both in moderation) is important for our well-being!

Crime hits local ’burbs hard

ccording to data released by Crime Stats SA last week, some northern suburbs are the most affected by crime in the country in their respective, often “bloody” categories. These include Kraaifontein, Table View, Bishop Lavis and Delft. According to the report, at least 5 900 crimes are reported to the police across the country each day. Data released by Crime Stats SA is based on official information from the police. Based on these facts, it would appear the still high levels of crime were gradually decreasing. The figures reveal raw data not in proportion to percentage of the population. The data covered refer to the statistics for 2014 (covering April 2013 to March 2014). According to these statistics, Delft ranks seventh in the Western Cape in the murder category (144), with Nyanga as the forerun-

ner at 305. Kraaifontein ranks seventh in the category for reported house break-ins over the year, with a total of 1 247, with Table View following closely with 1 235. For drug-related crimes, Delft ranked fourth (2 954), Bishop Lavis fifth (2 578) and Kraaifontein seventh (2 516). Mitchells Plain was first with 6 044 cases opened. Africacheck.org surmises that due to the time periods between having reported the stats and the financial year covered, the police’s crime data might be as much as six months out of date. Africacheck state many crimes go unreported, police data is unaudited, and there is widespread mistrust of the police, raising concerns over the legitimacy of the figures. social welfare organisation showed its compassion for children when it arranged a winter camp for mostly homeless kids last week. Hewlin Compassion’s Hewitt de Jager, told TygerBurger more about the camp which was held from 14 to 17 July and included teenagers from Durbanville, Kraaifontein, Brackenfell, Athlone and Delft. “We’ve worked with homeless people in the northern suburbs for the past three years. Among them are children – under 18,” said Hewitt. “So we decided to take 30 of them on this camp.” Hewitt said the camp’s theme was “Crossroads: What to do when you don’t know what to do.” The camp was held at the Princessvlei Eco Adventure Centre in Diep River. “Our facilitators consisted of social workers, community leaders and pastors,” he said. Hewitt said their programmes ranged

from life skills sessions to self-worth, creativity, team work, problem-solving and decision-making, among others. Among the various activities the children enjoyed were playing tag, building a bonfire and sharing their experiences during the group sessions. “The kids had three meals per day, loads of snacks in between, and lots of games to play with. They each got two blankets and a sleeping bag, each had their own bed and own bag of toiletries with a face cloth and towel,” he said. Hewlin Compassion serves as a member on the board of the Western Cape Streets Children’s Forum. Happy faces: The Mrs Cape Town 2015 finalists and their families spent Mandela Day at the Imfundo Educare in Worcester. This is one of the projects supported by the RoleModels Foundation, Mrs Cape Town’s charity beneficiary. RoleModels supports preschool and aftercare facilities in disadvantaged areas. et ’n motto om nie moed op te gee en homself te “push” sover hy kan, is ’n kunstenaar van Durbanville ondanks die gebruik van net een arm besig om opgang te maak met sy beeldhoukuns. Henry Haarhoff (61) was net 23 jaar oud toe sy regterskouer en arm in ’n motorfietsongeluk in Boston, Bellville beskadig is. Al die senuwees is uit die rugmurg geruk en dokters wou sy arm afsit. Hy het egter gekies om sy arm te behou, hoewel hy geen gevoel daarin en geen gebruik daarvan het nie. Hoewel hy daagliks pyn ervaar en medikasie gebruik weens chroniese inflammasie, is hy nie ’n dag spyt oor sy besluit om sy arm te behou nie. “Dis asof jy jou jou arm in kookolie druk, só intens is die pyn. Maar dit kom in vlae,” vertel hy, terwyl hy tydens die onderhoud by sy huis in Amanda Glen eers die dooie arm se hand in sy heup stut, en dan weer in sy broeksak druk.

Studies Hy was pas klaar met sy weermagopleiding en ná sy studies in landbounavorsing aan die Pretoriase Technikon pas aangestel as assistent-wynmaker by Welmoed-kelders op die Stellenbosse wynroete. Dié wynmaakdroom was vir eers aan skerwe. “Ek was baie sportief – ek het goed rugby gespeel, geswem en geduik. Toe ek na vier maande uit die hospitaal by die huis kom, kon ek nie my skoenveters vasmaak nie. Ek het gevoel ek het geen ‘purpose in life’ nie. “Ek moes besluit of ek in die veilige kokon van my gestremdheid gaan bly en of ek gaan aangaan met my lewe. Alles is ’n ‘hurdle’ om te ‘cross’. Elke keer as ek iets probeer buite die norm vir mense soos ek, is daar die kans dat ek dit nie kan regkry nie en die emosio-

nele skade wat dit meebring.” Hy het toe begin werk as fotograaf, veral as modefotograaf vir Topmod en later ander agentskappe. “Ek moes als met een hand doen – die kamera vashou, zoom, fokus en afneem. Dit was voor die dae van digitale kameras. Met my een hand in my broeksak gedruk, terwyl ek met die ander foto’s neem, het mense dikwels gedink ek is baie arrogant.” By ’n troue het ’n omie hom eenkeer aangepraat en gesê hy moet tog net sy hand uit sy broeksak haal, vertel hy. Hy het vir sowat agt jaar foto’s geneem, maar dit was later nie meer ’n uitdaging nie. “Elke keer as ek iets nuuts aanpak, moet ek eers kyk of ek dit kán doen.” Hy het onder

Hy het op 20 jaar ’n bronsbeeld van ’n kind gemaak, maar dit was die borsbeeld van Opperman wat hom laat besef het hy kán. “Dit was ’n gesukkel, maar dit het my vertroue gegee dat ek dit wél kan doen.” Toe volg die borsbeeld van Hennie Bosman, wat onthul is met die 50ste bestaansvieringe van dié karateskool. Bosman se vuiste is oorgroot om die gevoel van sy krag as ka-

rateman oor te dra. Ná die borsbeeld van Opperman, wou hy eksperimenteer of hy beweging sou kon weergee en het hy ’n diskusgooier geskep. “Met elke beeld moet ek eers ’n staalraam sweis. Sonder ’n arm moet ek alles eers vooraf beplan en ‘uitdink’ van presies hoe ek dit gaan doen. Soms moet ek ’n voet inspan en goed met my tone vasknyp ... of met my mond.”

Allan Boesak Nadat ’n kunstenaarsvriend, Conrad Theys, die Opperman-beeld gesien het, is hy bo ander bekende beeldhouers gekies om ’n brons-borsbeeld van dr. Allan Boesak te maak. Dit word op 11 Augustus by ’n NG Sendingkerk in Bellville-Suid onthul. Beslis ’n stempel van goedkeuring van sy talent! Hy is nou besig met ’n reeks van drie beelde om die tema van die mens se vraagstuk oor die lewe te versinnebeeld. “In ’n stadium raak ’n beeld vir my ’n persoon en dis ’n ongelooflike gevoel om met ’n identiteit te werk,” vertel hy. “Sekere ‘disabilities’ sit meer in jou kop. Ek glo as jy iets eers in jou kop kan formuleer, kan jy dit doen. Jou hand is net ’n verlenging van jou brein. Dis in jou brein dat die dinge gebeur. “Daar is net een ding wat ek nie kan doen nie en dis ‘push ups’. Dis eers as jy opgee, dat jy die stryd verloor, vertel hy. Dis met hierdie geloof dat hy onlangs ook ’n Willy’s Jeep van 1953 gerestoureer het. Hy het die voertuig tweekeer uitmekaar gehaal tot hy tevrede was. Hy het ook kleiduif geskiet, radiobeheerde vliegtuie gebou en gevlieg, die pragtige houtmeubels in sy voorhuis gemaak en ’n barshou op die muurbalbaan gespeel. Hy het beslis die pa’s wat destyds, toe hy nog by meisies vlerkgesleep het, gemeen het hy “gaan dit nie met een arm maak nie”, verkeerd bewys.

Humbled by kind gesture On the coldest, wettest morning the past week I noticed what I thought was a drunk old man in our warm waiting room. He sat there, soaking wet, swinging from side to side, his head on his chest. I was annoyed and called two of our workers to escort him out as he obviously was not a client of ours. They gently took him by the arms, stepping over the pool of urine by his feet. What happened next humbled me. These workers, earning a very small salary and being quite poor themselves, literally took the clothes off their own back to replace his soaked clothing. I felt ashamed. He was given warm coffee and a blanket. In the end, he was taken to the police station, as he did not know how he got to us. In hindsight, he might have been ill and not drunk at all. What a humbling experience. I drop my head in shame, but have learnt yet another life lesson. HUMBLED Bellville South

Petty rulings make life miserable Cluster housing appears to be one solution to living less expensively and safely in trying times. Unfortunately home owners’ associations are part of the deal. From experience I have come to realise that petty decisions made by trustees can make life very miserable for home owners. Many of these frustrated ladies and/or gentlemen appear to derive pleasure from finding (and consequently fining the culprit) a dirt bin outside the fence after a day, cutting off the branches of a yellow wood tree (which might be so arrogant as to be growing its own way) and breaking up cement paving built to park a

Pedestrian bridge on N7 long overdue Re: “Residents call for footbridge”, TB Durbanville, 8 July: For two years I have been driving that route and have always seen pedestrians running over the N7. I am sure it has been happening for many years prior. How come it has not been

sorted out sooner? The pedestrians should have been prevented from crossing the N7 and a footbridge built when the problem arose about ten years ago. The death of a pedestrian and the consequential traffic delays could have been avoided if the correct action was taken then. Why can we not think pro-actively and first wait till someone dies before reacting? Van hierdie vragmotors neem nie aankomende verkeer in ag wanneer hulle hul “parkeerarea” verlaat nie en menige maak ’n U-draai by Milnerstraat om terug te draai na die hawe, weer eens sonder om aankomende verkeer in ag te neem. Op donker wintersoggende is dit ook ’n probleem met die toename in voetgangers wat die bane oorsteek, veral naby die Caltex-motorhawe. Ek kan nie help om te wonder of die padverspoelings tydens die reënseisoen nie ook veroorsaak word deur die vragmotors wat die sypaadjies beskadig nie. Elke vyf jaar gaan stemme op en word opgetree teen politieke partye wat hulle verkiesingsplakkate teen lamppale in Otto du Plessis-rylaan oprig, omdat dit die natuurskoon belemmer. ocal filmmakers are thrilled that a South African feature film has won awards at two international film award ceremonies. The local film Born to Win scooped the Golden Crown Award for Best Evangelistic Feature Film at the International Christian Visual Media Conference (ICVM 2015) in Orlando, USA on 27 June, only three weeks after winning the Adam Award for Best Feature Film at the Sabaoth International Film Festival in Milan, Italy. It also won the Bronze Crown Award for Best Feature Drama. Frans Cronjé from Brac- Frans Cronjé kenfell, who also produced the hit movie Faith Like Potatoes, and Cobus van den Berg from Eversdal, producer of the equally successful Klein Karoo, teamed up to produce this movie which was released in August last year. The film was written and directed by Cronjé, produced by Van den Berg and wholly filmed in George. Born to Win, based on the true story of Leon Terblanche, poses the question: “Where is God?” “The Crown Awards are the biggest annual film awards in the international Christi-

New technology installed in ambulances across the metro seem to make emergency medics a target for crime. Three sources in the industry, who do not want to be identified as they are not contractually permitted to speak to the media, say attacks have spiked over the last few months, especially in Mitchell’s Plain, Manenberg, Hanover Park and Khayelitsha. They believe the spike coincides with the provision of tablet devices in ambulances, which link medics to the call centre and provide directions to the scene. Some medics who have been attacked have been told to hand over the “tablets”,

sources say. The tablets, according to a source, have been installed so they are “impossible to remove” from the vehicles. The tablets are also locked and only work on the health department’s system, thus are useless for any other user. The installation of the devices, referred to as MDTs, cost in the region of R300m, sources say. Medics have reportedly raised their concerns with management, but have received no outcome. They are now calling for the community to be informed the devices are not removable and are unusable outside of the ambulance. No comment had been received by the department of health before going to print.

Wine fest benefits Pebbles Project

ine lovers in Cape Town’s northern suburbs can look forward to the third We Love Wine Festival at CapeGate Shopping Centre on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 August. About 20 wineries will present more than 100 wines for tasting and for sale, directly from the producers. A wide selection to suit every palate and wallet, ranging from red, white, dry and sweet, through to Port, bubbly and pot-still brandy, is on offer. Wineries participating include some of the large producers with well-known brands, to smaller boutique and family-owned wineries, giving festival-goers a taste of the best of South Africa’s winelands in one venue. The South African Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN) headed Mike Meyers, says on average, 15 to 17 cases of whale entanglement are reported every year. However, this number is increasing annually as the population increases, he says. There have been eight cases this year already and it is only the start of the whale season, expected to peak in September. Ten years ago, a large number of entanglements were reported, prompting the department of environmental affairs to approach the lobster industry to fund training from an American whale disentanglement specialist. The department invited a range of roleplayers and SAWDN was born, with basic training and handling of equipment taught on a mechanical whale tail. The network now includes a number of partners, including the Dolphin Protection Action Group, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Natal Sharks Board, researchers and whale watchers, Meyers said. This has created 17 centres along the South African coast. A new group is trained every year and more equipment is manufactured. It costs about R25 000 to set up a new team. The network, which is now the fourth largest in the world, is also affiliated to the International Whaling Commission and shares information and best practice tech-

Report it The public should report any sighting of an entangled whale immediately, says Meyer. There have been reports of people being killed by whales in the past, which is why the general public should never attempt to free a whale themselves. The network will immediately dispatch a boat to locate the animal and monitor it. The disentanglement team will then cut whatever rope or net the whale is caught in. The network has a 100% success rate in disentangling whales trapped on the sea bottom. However, whales entangled but able to break free are difficult to follow, and an entangled whale can face a very slow death, taking up to nine months to die. Dangerous work Disentangling the whale can be very dangerous, says Meyer. While humpback whales easily tire and will stop thrashing about, southern right whales tend to kick their tails sideways and this can cause serious injury. Safety is paramount and volunteers never enter the water. “It’s a very scary thing the first time you assist a whale. Many volunteers go out with their heart in their throats,” he says. Fair Cape creams it in world dairy industry You know you are doing the right thing when your project is named the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative in the dairy industry, worldwide! Fair Cape Cares Initiative won the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative category in the World Dairy Innovation Awards, announced in Amsterdam as part of the 9th Global Dairy Congress. The award recognises the project Fair Cape Dairies is running for Operation Smile. The cap on each bottle of milk Fair Cape produces provides information on the project. The caps are recycled and the money generated funds cleft palate or cleft lip operations They have also funded collection bins in shopping malls and schools, and a number of companies collect the plastic bottle caps. Among the most enthusiastic collectors was Janu van Deventer, a Grade 1 learner

at Eversdal Primary School. When the school asked the learners to bring bottle caps for Operation Smile, Janu asked his family to keep all their bottle caps for him to take to school! His grandfather in Clanwilliamn even pays homeless people to help collect bottle caps at the municipal dump. The caps are washed, sorted and packed in bags. They are now almost at their 10 000 mark! Fair Cape Dairies was also a finalist in the Best Environmental Sustainability Initiative category. This accolade was for their water recycling. Every effort is made to avoid polluting groundwater and water used to clean the milking parlour is recycled and the solid waste removed and used as fertiliser, thus reducing use of chemical fertilisers. The company was the only South African dairy recognised at this year’s awards.

Shelter provides kennels Many township dogs sleep outside – come rain or sunshine, storm, wind or hail. For these dogs, a kennel may be the only thing protecting them from the elements. This is why Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) started a kennel project in 2013, says Jennifer Davies of FAW. “Unfortunately, the norm in Fisantekraal is for dogs to stay outside. Many are even tied up and cannot seek shelter themselves. “While some dog owners will build something for their dog, many do not. If there is a kennel or shelter, it is often inadequate or has disintegrated due to a lack of funds. “Since we launched the project with the help of sponsors and donations of new and second-hand kennels, well over 400 kennels have been provided – last year alone 200 kennels were placed. “Where possible, owners are expected to contribute towards the kennel, but we carry most of the cost.” To sponsor a kennel costs R270, but FAW also accepts secondhand kennels of wood or concrete. Davies says: “Wooden kennels are great. We also really like concrete kennels for areas where theft is a problem or we know the area is too rough for weaker kennels. We place these on top of pallets covered in a sheet of wood and rubber. “Unfortunately, we are all

Majorettes on the march: Despite being robbed of all their kit a week before departure, the Brackenfell Junior Majorettes achieved a second place at the South African Championship held in Bloemfontein last week. The team consists of 27 members between the ages of 6 and 13 from Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, Bellville and Durbanville. Both coaches, Colette Stoffberg (left) and Chantal Lombard have South African colours. “With the generous donations made after the theft and the team’s perseverance and dedication to their sport, we did not only amaze the crowd but also the adjudicators and officials with magnificnet displays,” says Stoffberg. The team was the only primary school in the Western Cape to make it through to the finals in all the categories. They were also the only team from the Western Cape to obtain a place in the top three for the category Champion of Champions of Primary and High School.

Fishy fun has serious aim

ith the rules of the day including stealing fish, exaggerating the size of your catch and kissing your first fish of the day, the second Miggie Challenge was a fun event that will remain in particpant’s memories. The Miggie Challenge, which was held at Phisantekraal dam just outside Durbanville, was initiated in 2014 as an annual competition to celebrate the life and positive spirit of Stefan “Miggie” King from Brackenfell. Miggie, who was a hero in fishing circles, lost the battle to Cystic Fibrosis in 2014 at the age of 21. The competition aims to promote Cystic Fibrosis awareness and organ donation. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys and intestine. There is currently no cure for the disease.

All monies collected through the competition go towards helping those who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis and similar life-threatening diseases. This year, the R16 000 raised went towards Andries van der Merwe, son of Anne-Mart and Albertus van der Merwe from Boland Freshwater Angling Club, who also suffers from Cystic Fibrosis. The competition is fun and anglers were encouraged to arrive at the dam wearing fancy dress costumes. The competition’s main rule is to break the rules, which is a great laugh when anglers are running up and down the bank stealing each other’s fish. Prizes were awarded to the best dressed peg, best dressed individual, biggest fish, the smallest fish, the best junior under 16 years of age and the best woman.

usband and wife duo Sam and Calla will launch their debut album at the Bellville Civic Theatre next week. The launch of Why did you take so long comes shortly after Samantha and Calla Henn’s return from Johannesburg to attend the SAMRO Wawela Music Awards where they were nominated alongside Blackbyrd and Mccully Workshop in the best South African duo/group category. Not bad for a group who have only been producing original music since last year. Calla is one of four children and grew up in a musical family. He performed with various original bands before meeting Sam about four years ago. Sam’s love affair with music started when she took piano lessons in high school, but life got in the way and she grew up and found herself with a day job. She was 23 when she met Calla and the two used to sing together at braais until he convinced her to join him on stage. She says the idea of being on stage with “all those people” looking at her was scary, but soon she was working through the day and singing at night, until one day, she decided to focus on music. “I left my job and I haven’t been back since.” That was three year ago, when Sam and Call were known as Public Holiday. Within their first year together they won a local battle of the bands competition and got a contract to perform at a top hotel in Dubai. When they returned in June last year, they decided it was time to focus on original music.

Die tongvalle is standaard-Afrikaans, Kaaps- en GariepAfrikaans. Die drie karakters, Oom Goltros (Gariep), Kapenaar (Kaaps) en Meester (standaard-Afrikaans), besluit om ’n woordkunsproduksie op die planke te bring. Soos hulle stry en stoei neem die woordkunsproduksie, sonder dat hulle daarvan bewus is, gestalte aan. Dit is ook ’n interaktiewe produksie waarin gesing en gedans word en die gehoor sal aangemoedig word om hieraan mee te doen. Verskeie digters se werk kan in hierdie produksie gehoor word, soos onder meer Adam Small, Hans du Plessis, Eugene Beukes, Willem Fransman, Elias P. Nel en Peter Snyders. Oor Ma se melk! sê die skrywer Elias P. Nel dit is ’n viering van die diversiteit van Afrikaans. “Dalk iets waarby taalpuriste nie noodwendig aanklank sal vind nie. Dit bly egter

Pupils can sing with Pharrell This September, a singing group from one school in South Africa’s will get the opportunity of a lifetime to perform live on stage with Pharrell Williams. Woolworths, in collaboration with Pharrell Williams, will be hosting a private concert and one singing group will get the chance to appear on stage with Pharrell and win a cash prize of R100 000. ome of CapeTown’s most fabulous divas will be on stage at the Joseph Stone Auditorium for one night only on Saturday 1 August. They’ll be performing at Kat Gilardi’s Divas One Night Only, a cabaret show consisting of drag queens lip synching. The annual charity concert in the brain child of Kat Gilardi. “I won Miss Gay Western Cape in 2010 and as the title holder you have to come up with a fund-raising or awareness concept,” she explains. Considering there were already many pageants on offer, Kat decided to do something she really enjoyed instead. “Cabaret or lip synching deserves the respect of an art form as it was not viewed like that.”

Creativity Kat explains tons of effort, energy and creativity go into preparing a song to perform. She decided to create a concert to showcase Cape Town’s talent on one stage to raise funds and educate local communities. “We are not just boys or men in dresses but men with talent, creativity, amazing personalities and good souls.” Funds raised at the concert will go to the Miss Gay Western Cape (MGWC) organisation. They run soup kitchens and finalists of the competition visit oldage and children’s homes. Last year MGWC also ran a Christ-

mas soup kitchen and delivered toys to children. “My team and I at MGWC have no financial backing,” Kat points out, adding they welcome any contributions that can assist their charity work.

Parow blaas nuwe lewe in korfbal STEHAN SCHOEMAN

ie Parow-korfbalklub is tans die enigste bestaande klub in Kaapstad en probeer nuwe lewe in dié sport blaas met verskeie ope dae wat beplan word. Tans is daar ongeveer 60 spelers in die hele Wes-Kaap, met Ceres wat heelwat spelers op o.20-vlak het. “Ons beplan om een keer per maand ’n ope dag te hou en ons nooi almal om te kom speel. Dit is ’n gesinssport en baie sosiaal. Ons was juis nou op Saterdag 8 Augustus by die Jan Burger-sportkompleks in Parow. “Vroeër jare het Bothasig, Eversdal, Durbanville, die Bellville-brandweer, Parowvallei en Epping, om slegs ’n paar plekke te noem, hul eie korfbalklubs gehad. “Dit is juis die rede hoekom ons die ope dae hou om weer die getalle van die sport op ’n aanvaarbare vlak te kry. Hoekom die getalle oor die jare so drasties afgeneem het,

bly ’n ope vraag,” verduidelik Tania Brase, van die Parow-korfbalklub. Daar word ook reeds aan planne geskaaf om binnekort ’n beginnersliga vir o.9-seuns en -meisies te begin. Die baan is soortgelyk aan ’n netbalbaan, maar die grootte en afmetings verskil. Daar is nege spelers in ’n span, drie in elke blok, en die span bestaan uit drie doele, drie middelspelers en drie verdedigers. Die bal word soos met netbal van speler tot speler gegooi. Spelers mag nie die bal teen hul lywe vang nie, daar mag nie gemik (ge-dummy) word nie en die speler het twee sekondes om die bal uit te gee. Alhoewel die voetreëls nie so streng is soos met netbal nie, mag die speler nie met die bal vorentoe of agtertoe beweeg wanneer hy of sy beheer daarvan het nie. Women’s fitness extravaganza The second Diva Extravaganza All Women’s Fitness Show will be held on Saturday 1 August at CPUT in Bellville. Harris proving to be top tennis contender Although Lloyd Harris from Durbanville is still a rookie on the pro tennis circuit, he already has his first win under the belt. Lloyd, the singles champion of the F2 Standard Bank Open, won his maiden singles title on 14 June on the ITF Pro Circuit in what was also his first appearance in a final. The 18-year-old had been competing at ITF Junior Circuit events over the first four months of the year before starting on a run of ITF Pro Circuit tournaments in Egypt. After only six ITF tournaments, Lloyd clenched his first career title in Maputo. On his way to the final, he defeated world number 587, Song (third seed) from USA and world number 272, Da Silva (first seed) from Portugal. After Mozambique, Lloyd travelled to Zimbabwe to participate in two ITF Future tournaments in Harare. On 20 June Lloyd and his doubles partner Nik Scholtz won the doubles title and on 28 June Lloyd won his second singles title on the tour by beating South African number 1 Davis Cup player and first seed, Tucker Vorster in the final. After this, Lloyd’s singles ranking rose to a new career high of 601 on the ATP rankings. South Africa Tennis selected him as part of their SA Davis Cup squad who competed against Ireland this past weekend in Pretoria. Lloyd excelled for South Africa at junior level. He started 2015 off as the top South African and African player on the junior circuit at number 38 in the world. He competed on his favourite surface in January this year at the Australian Open Junior Championship and successfully defended his African Doubles Title at the Africa Junior Championships in Morocco in April. Lloyd will soon be travelling to New York to compete in the US Open Junior Championship, held from 5-15 September.
