‘MOTHER’ CHRISTMAS PROJECT: SPECIAL PRESENTS FOR FISANTEKRAAL KIDS
Bags of hope and love P
ut three little bears, a beauty with a golden heart and a Bag of Joy together, and you create an event that brings Christmas cheer to little ones who may otherwise not have had any. The Bag of Joy is the brainchild of Nicci Venter, who has been doing her version of the Santa Shoe Box project since she was 21. Venter (26) has been running this Christmas project for Die Drie Beertjies crèche in Fisantekraal since then, and again visited her little wards with their special prezzies
on Monday morning. “[This is] a project so close to my heart. We started with 19 kiddies and now, with a very overwhelmed heart, I can proudly say that for 2016 we will took on 164 children. “I do it with the help of the Durbanville police. “We load the van full of gift bags, then they put the sirens on and we drive into the informal settlement like that. “I get out of the back of the van all dressed for Christmas,” Venter says.
She adds some of the children are from homes where the parents are unemployed or drug addicts. “The aim with the project is to show the kids that no matter where they come from, there is hope – that it doesn’t matter what their circumstances are.” Venter understands all about “circumstances”. Her dad was an alcoholic, she says. “This is my way of giving back.” She adds the police van also plays an important symbolic role: “We use it so the children will know the police aren’t just per-

ceived as bad – taking their parents away – but that it also brings gifts and love ...” Venter says the project sometimes scares her. “Yes, I am scared,” she says, adding residents’ help is always welcome. The Bag of Joy is a little backpack filled with all things a child will not only find amazing, but also useful. The key elements the little ones find in there though, are hope and love, says Venter. Hot cars, cold drinks at Beers and Gears Visitors to the second annual Beers and Gears Festival at Willowbridge this past weekend could fend off the thirstinducing warm weather with a selection of craft beers and ciders on tap. And if the beer did not do it, some of the sport and classic cars on display certainly made some heads turn. Carina Roux took her camera along.

Resident raises his concerns
D
urbanville’s 14 Queen Street is a headache to locals because of “aggressive” vagrants who camp out there and apparently now also rob passersby. So says resident Mark Wright, who sent a letter of complaint to the top brass of the province, including Helen Zille, demanding action be taken against the vagrants. According to him, employees of the Republic Kidz playschool were robbed on Friday 2 December at the corner of Gladstone and Queen streets, just before 07:00. “Enough is enough,” he writes. “The time has come for some positive action. Kindly look into this matter as it is really becoming a serious problem. The vagrants are starting to get aggressive towards the public and just now somebody is going to get seriously hurt or even worse.” Ward councillor Theresa Uys responded to Wright’s complaint. “This area has been identified as one of the hotspots in the Dur-
banville CBD and is regularly monitored by Law Enforcement. Last week, informal structures were removed by Law Enforcement and the street people were assisted by social development. A new group of people have now moved in and Law Enforcement and social development did an intervention this morning (Friday).” She adds the town has seen an increase in the number of people begging and living on the streets. “The City has therefore allocated three additional fieldworkers to the CBD to help profile the street people and to see what interventions can be implemented to help reduce the number of people living on the streets,” she says. “A few months ago I submitted a motion recommending that the property in Queen Street be leased in order to have a monitored secure parking space,” Uys says. An application to lease the property was submitted. Uys says she is waiting for this process to be finalised.

Freemasons launch initiative for blind society With the donation of a mini-van, one of the most ambitious job-creating drives for visually impaired people kicked off in style on Wednesday 30 November. The Cape Town Society of the Blind (CTSB) received a sevenseater Volkswagen Caddy donated by the South African Western Division of the Freemasons. The Freemasons have dedicated themselves to generate R1 million to enhance the productivity and capacity for the training, education and development department of the CTSB, which was in dire need of additional transport. The transport was needed to ac-
celerate the CTSB’s production capacity for their exquisite, world-renowned weaved products, and for them to become the first fullyfledged barista training centre for visually impaired people in South Africa. One of the highlights of the fundraising by the Freemasons over the next 15 months – in the lead-up to the tercentenary of English Freemasonry – is a grand charity dinner and auction on Saturday 25 February 2017 at the Cassia Restaurant on the Nitida Wine Farm. The dinner will be held from 18:30 (for 19:00). Lizelle van Wyk, CEO of the CTSB, said the vehicle donated to

Another need is a cane splitting machine for the cane weaving workshop, which is used to split the cane much faster than by hand, simultaneously eliminates unnecessary waste. Additional braille equipment is also needed to enhance the capacity of the braille training centre. The auction in February is an investment into the CTSB’s mission of broadening the skill sets of visually impaired persons. It is also aimed at boosting their empower-
ment and economic and social independence, said Jim Duggan, a Freemason district grand master. “Charity is a cornerstone of freemasonry and a spirit of volunteerism is evident in our division. We demonstrated that by committing ourselves to funding new vehicles for the CTSB. These are essential for many of the key functions of the society such as job placement, mentoring and capacity building,” Duggan added. V The Freemasons will hand over a sec ond vehicle in the foreseeable future to enhance the productivity and capacity of the training, education and development department of the CTSB.

Such is the case when he and fellow runner, Claudia Burger, and others will attempt a 400km marathon over five days on the N1 to highlight the plight of human trafficking victims. They will start their run at the Rawsonville weighbridge on the Worcester side of the Huguenot Tunnel and head on to Beaufort West, from 6 to 10 December. “Yes, I am joining Claudia Burger on the run. She asked me early last week if I would be willing to do the distance with them ... No coincidence, I am sure, as three weeks ago I was driving to Ficksburg and back on the N1 with my car to take part in the Cherrie Festival 23km Mountain Race,” says the running veteran. “Between Beaufort West and Touws River I once again was reminded of the dire state of the economy in the Karoo and realised that

Then Claudia contacted me a week later!” he says. “I always say that every action starts with yourself and what better way to start contributing some help? May God help us sow seeds of love, hope and human compassion on the N1, its vulnerable women and child communities and the reality of human trafficking,” Hilton adds. asché Burger (16) van Brackenfell is bekroon as die algehele wenner van die sangafdeling by die Suid-Afrikaanse Talentkampioenskap wat verlede maand in Johannesburg gehou is. “Daar was oor die 600 deelnemers van alle ouderdomme. Deelnemers kon slegs 90 sekondes van ’n lied sing en ook slegs ’n maksimum van ses liedjies vertoon,” sê Liana Marx, Burger se sangonderwyser. “Tasché het in die ouderdomsgroep 14 tot 16 jaar deelgeneem en het ’n eerste plek behaal met al ses haar liedere in verskillende genres. Sy het liedjies soos “Peace by Peace” (Kelly Clarkson), “Water under the bridge” (Adele), “Take me home” (Jess Glynne), “Here with me” (Warren Elliott), “Holding on for a Hero” (Bonny Tyler) gesing en net met haar kitaar ’n asemrowende weergawe van “Lisa se klavier” gedoen,” sê Marx.

Voorkoming is altyd beter as genesing.”
THINKING OUT LOUD
Plight of the poorest tugs at one’s heart An elderly man keeps on shouting: “What about the poor people?”, the desperation in his voice sincere. Children play soccer in the dusty gravel streets, while dogs seek out the minimal shade there is to take a nap – this is what greets one when entering Wolwerivier. The struggles of the people living here are well documented, but it is only when you actually visit the place and talk to the residents that reality hits home. When their nearest shops are kilometres away, you can’t help but think how do they do this? How do they survive? What happens if there is a medical emergency and someone needs urgent attention? All these questions pop up in my head. For them this is normal; this is life – where the struggle is real, every single day. They may never know a better way of life and it saddens me deeply. You would think Several bro in a place like this the people would at ken windows least be safe – I mean, how do you and doors steal from people who have nothing? show that the However, several skollies rule broken windows and doors show with an iron that the skollies rule with an iron fist ... fist. There are unconfirmed reports of a child rape in one of the empty houses. Just like everyone else in the country, the poorest of the poor also face these challenges – of rape and theft – that no-one should ever have to endure. The future of the little school also seems to be doomed. They are staring down the barrel, it seems, with more and more difficulties, and few solutions. The children are enjoying themselves playing soccer and for now they do not yet have the worries of their parents. The only thing they worry about, for now, is how to score their next goal. And yet, through all this desperation, some in the community of Wolwerivier are taking a stand and saying “no more!” Slowly but surely, things will get better, because of them. There will be a light at the end of the tunnel – there simply has to be. There are a lot of good people with soft hearts that just want the best for each other. And as long as these people stand together and are counted, they will come out on top and make Wolwerivier a better place. – Stehan Schoeman

Consent still needed – why? There we were – a long nervous queue of law-abiding citizens waiting their turn to do something mundane, such as paying their annual car licence. Some of us are three-time offenders – a serious crime in the eyes of the municipal concentration camps. We whisper nervously amongst ourselves if we have the correct documents to pass the test – getting the elusive round disk that must be displayed on the front window of your precious car to escape a further penalty, because you have a traceable address registered with your local authority. Finally, I reach the front of the more than one hour long queue of a human drama and hope to be a successful candidate for my round paper disk. Clasped in my clammy hands are my proof of residence (which must strictly not be older than three months), my valid South African identity document, and cash. I am one of the fortunate ones to receive the reminder of the renewal of my licence by post – actually genuinely in my post box at home, delivered by a human. Some of the relevant information to pass this “test” is drooping from the walls, but of course not all the information is displayed. The unlucky ones who didn’t receive “the forms”, must complete more mundane forms whilst waiting in the squirming, irritated queue. Have you ever tried to complete forms whilst standing up with no hard paperback support? Plus, you feel like an idiot … It is not my “own” car
licence I am paying, but my husband’s, currently working overseas … I hand my cash, ID, proof of address and my husband’s licence reminder to the official in the total soundproof glass booth (which makes communication even more difficult) and a third negative shake of the head greets me. I also need his approval after 28 years of marriage that I can pay his licence by cheque or cash to them. I have the right to drive his car without written consent, but I do need it to make us “legally licensed” on the road. Cheques – who carries that anymore? They do not have a facility for debit or credit cards in their office, but cheques are just dandy … So, the bottom line is, pay your car licence by cheque via the reliable Post Office and no questions asked, no proof of residence or carrying cash is required! L JACOBS Kenridge
Traffic cops – I challenge you! Thank you for the article “The complicated roles of City cops”, TB, 30 November. It gave insight in the difficult roles these cops have to play and the public is very indebted to them for what they are doing to ensure our safety. There is, however, one worrying aspect. From the article it is clear that road safety forms an integral part of the cops’ responsibilities, but the enforcement of the law at four-way stop streets in Durbanville is practically non-existent. The blatant and reckless way in which motorists ignore some of those stopstreets is criminal and cries out for action. I invite the traffic cops to
observe, for one hour, the situation at the four-way stop at the crossing of High- and St. John streets. Surely other people can also attest to similar offences in their area. WYNAND THERON Onze Molen
Reshuffle might backfire on De Lille “Reshuffle riles locals”, TB, 30 November, refers. I view with grave concern the ongoing reports that the mayor wants to move JP Smith due to his outspoken views – a strong leader should know that they must surround themselves with outspoken people, or strong becomes arrogant and autocratic. I think there is just too many claims that our mayor is starting to become a bit too intolerant of views opposing hers. I heard too many accusations about her whole handling of the Philippi vegetable growing area with the valuable aquifer at stake should the area go to developers – not to mention the previously disadvantaged losing their livelihoods, while they themselves have a very creditable plan to develop the area and the vegetable growing there. JP is highly regarded. Autocratic behaviour in destroying his hard work with less able insiders might just reflect badly back to De Lille, come 2019. BERNE NIGHTINGALE Durbanville
Reshuffling brings best out of people “Reshuffle riles locals”,TB , 30 November, refers. I strongly believe in reshuffling in any organisation. That brings the best out of any individual, as they won’t know what to
expect. What’s happening here is already an indication by an individual who is fighting for survival. I am also a member of my local neighbourhood watch, but certainly this individual who is involved here is no superhero. All members are doing their utmost best in serving the communities they are living in and not only the one person. Furthermore, this City belongs to all of us and not only to the one who claims that this is his City, speaking of his people, his department etcetera. Maybe this decision by the mayor is a wake-up call to JP Smith, to start realising that he is not above the City of Cape Town or the management structure. JAMES ELLIS Email

Comrades runner ‘chose to live’ DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
Y Barbara Kingsley chose to live after being diagnosed with HIV in 2000.
PHOTO: DESIRÉE RORKE
ou often hear about the millions of people who die of Aids each year, but seldom about the millions who live with it. Ultra-marathon runner and Aids activist Barbara Kingsley is one such person who, despite her HIVpositive status, lives life abundantly. In a heartfelt address she shared her story with the community of Scottsville on Friday, when World Aids Day was commemorated at the Harmonie Clinic. Barbara was diagnosed in 2000.
“I was not feeling well and had a persistent headache and flu-like symptoms that did not want to go away. My doctor suggested I test for HIV and after nine inconclusive tests, on 29 December I tested positive.” Barbara said she knew who had infected her at the time, but blames nobody for what had happened. “To say I was devastated would be an understatement. I was convinced that I would die within a year or two. After the initial shock, I went into complete denial and it was only when I got really sick in 2007, that I had to face this disease head-on,” she said.
By 2008 her CD4 (white blood cells) count was only 86 and she was so sick that she had to stop working. “I couldn’t even walk a few metres, I was so weak. I often dreamed of how good it would feel if I could only get out of bed. For the first time I started anti-retroviral treatment (ARV), but ended up even more sick, vomiting non-stop.” Barbara was again convinced that a quick death was imminent. “However, I made the decision to live and to fight for my life. I forced myself to eat and to get out of bed. I forced myself to drink energy drinks to gain weight and changed
my medication to another ARV treatment. Within two weeks I was feeling dramatically better.” Later that year she watched the Comrades marathon on television. “It dawned on me that I possessed that same strength. I bought running shoes and started running. Just a kilometre or two twice a week, but I persisted and two kilometres became five; five became 10 kilometres.” In 2013, she finished her first Comrades. “Even if we have nothing else, we have a choice. I chose to live”. V What is your opinion on Barbara’s jour ney? Write to us at briewe@tygerburger .co.za.

He asked for me at my receptionist and then told me the long story – then I saw the beer in his pocket and actually chased him out of my offices!” the client reported. “Sorry, but I had to bring this to your attention as this is not acceptable to me and my business!” This is not acceptable practice to us either – even if it may only be a few individuals. Plans to compile deafblind database Deafblind SA Western Cape (WC) and the provincial social development department wish to identify all deafblind people and include them into a database so as to compile a registry. “This will enhance Deafblind SA’s hand to speak for and represent all deafblind people on all platforms of local and central government departments,” says Dr Johan Pretorius, chairperson of Deafblind SA WC. “Deafblind people are identified as persons with different degrees of both visual and hearing loss. This loss can be born with, or acquired later in life. “Your cooperation in this endeavour will make a great difference in the lives of our deafblind community to enhance their circumstances and standard of living,” Pretorius adds. s a hatchling, the Tygerberg Bird Club (TBC) left its nest in 1986, took flight and has never looked back since. Its passionate members always made the time to appreciate an incredible variety of birdlife nature has to offer. But they are more than just a collection of enthusiasts – they raise much needed funds for birdlife conservation and conservation education. With this in mind they have compiled the fifth edition of their popular 2017 Birds of Southern Africa Calendar, which comes just in time for Christmas. One of the project co-ordinators, Lesley Teare, elaborates: “It is with sincere thanks to numerous sponsors who have sponsored a month in the calendar as well as all the people, both club members and the general public, who have supported our projects over the past five years, that we have been able to support birdlife conservation and conservation education projects to the value of R127 000 to date. “This is an amazing feat which we, the TBC, are extremely proud of. As a registered non-profit organisation we ensure that all the funds raised for conservation through the sale of our calendars are channelled into various projects and programmes.” Teare continues: “The main aim of our club is to enhance our knowledge of all birds, their behaviour and their habitats, and to introduce the public to the conservation and science of our avian heritage through enjoyable participation in club outings, camps and conservation exercises. Our members’ interests in nature, however, extend beyond our beautiful feathered friends, so a typical outing or camp will include birds, butterflies, insects, dragon and damsel-flies, frogs and photography, to name but a few.” V Order three or more calendars and enjoy a dis count on the price of each calendar. An order form for the colourful 2017 calendar can be obtained by clicking on the “Calendar2017” tab on the Tyger berg Bird Club’s website at www.tygerbergbird club.org, and you can learn more about the club and how to join while visiting the website.

ix years after his Idols success, local musician Mark Haze is ready to show fans who he really is. Mark took second place in the national televised singing competition, turning him into an instant household name. But those who know Mark’s history will know that his music career started many years before that as the frontman for the Bellville-based rock band 12th Avenue. The alternative band was known as one of the busiest in the country and went on to achieve radio success with songs like “Single” and “Crazy”, but it was his second place finish in Idols that allowed Mark to quit his job and become a full-time musician. “It was always going to be music.” Mark recalls how as a child already he confidently announced to his mother that no matter what happened in his life, he’d always be a musician. But while Mark is very thankful for his Idols experience, he feels the outside influences in his music writing process prevented him from exploring his true potential as a composer. “When Idols took place, because I look like I look, and my hair is long, and I can sing those notes, I was put into a box and I became the rock guy.” Now that he’s free from his contractual obligations, Mark can get back to experimenting with his sound. “Musically I’m having the time of my life right now,” he says, beaming. he brand new R5 million dog park in Sunningdale sent tongues and tails wagging last week when it was officially opened to furry friends and their owners. Officially named Leadville Dog Park, the public facility was designed and developed by Garden Cities and first conceptualised by Garden Cities group manager for engineering and planning, Renier Smith. Speaking at the opening, group chief executive, John Matthews, said the park was in line with their vision for holistically developing suburbs. “This is a first for us and when Renier said he wanted to build a dog park, we thought ‘wow’. We hope that the Sunningdale and indeed the greater Table View community will make use of the facility and take ownership of it,” Matthews says. He thanked all those who consulted or provided services during the construction of the park, and Smith for his innovative thinking. Sunningdale resident Jonathan Page and his Border Collie-cross, Finn, have been watching the development, eagerly waiting for it to be completed. “We watched it very closely and the design is just fantastic. Look at the paw shapes in the water fountain – it’s all the little details that really make the park great,” he says. V What is your opinion on the park? Let us know at briewe@tygerburger.co.za.

Prevention ‘starts at home’ DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzirorke
Prevention of HIV/Aids starts at home. Local politician and humanitarian Brenda Hansen firmly believes education around this pandemic should start with parental intervention, while children are still relatively young. “In South Africa, research has shown that women between the ages of 15 and 24 are most affected by HIV/Aids,” she said in Kraaifontein on World Aids Day on Thursday 1 December. Hansen said it was imperative for parents to realise their children might be sexually active at as young as 14. “At this stage they should still have the innocence of childhood, rather than being sexually active, as is the case with many chil-
dren today.” Hansen said parents should set an example and take responsibility for their children’s moral upbringing. “Single parents, please take heed of who you bring home to your children and what example you set for them with your own sexual behaviour. Your children watch you and will do what you do. “Be a good example and talk to your children about sexual behaviour and HIV. Parents play a vital role in the fight against this disease.” Moreover, Hansen urged young women to take responsibility for their own sexual health. “Female condoms are freely available. If you are sexually active, keep it with you and use it at all times.” V What is your opinion on this article? Let us know at briewe@tygerburger.co.za.

Evers samel flink geld in vir talle organisasies I
Kort hierna is sy leuse, Damus, of “Ons gee”, gevestig.

along”. When she was working on Time, Bianca recalls being like a child in a toy shop who just wanted to play with everything. “I went absolutely crazy,” she says, adding “it’s very cinematic”. This time round, she’s gone with a more groovy sound. “It’s still got an emotional element, but it’s a little lighter.” Music fans can keep an eye on her website from December to hear her new music. Next year is going to be a big one for Bianca with lots of shows and festival performances planned. There’s also a possible tour of Europe on the cards. “2017 is going to be jam-packed,” she says, going through her calendar.

With her quirky personality and quiet confidence, this local singer and songwriter is a breath of fresh air, but despite her relaxed attitude, she doesn’t mess about when it come to her music. Bianca says she’s always been interested in entertainment. “As a kid I used to imitate people, learn all the accents and that kind of thing.” Her fascination soon gave way to dreams and after school she studied acting at Stellenbosch University, doing her honours in cabaret, which is where she started writing her own music.
The coolest thing ... She was involved in a lot of theatre work and had already started working on her first album when she came across the Africa Voices Trust programme. “That was probably the coolest thing that I’ve ever done.” It was there that she got to learn about the business side of the music industry and meet “game changers”, some of whom are now helping her further her musical journey. “It’s amazing,” Bianca says of the team she’s surrounded herself with. “There’s always someone to do something.” In fact, her team handles most

The struggle with forced removals LOUISA STEYL @lousteyl
T
he Artscape Arena will be turned into a living museum this weekend when a group of local theatre-makers present the late Adam Small’s Joanie Galant-hulle. “Joanie Galant-hulle is basically about the District Six forced removals,” actress Lauren Hannie explains. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the events that saw thousands of residents evicted from their homes and forced to build their lives elsewhere. Small’s piece tells this story through the Galant family, who are among the displaced. After moving to the Cape Flats, Joanie’s husband, Joseph, is attacked and loses the ability to walk properly, which means he can no longer work or provide for his family. “They therefore can’t afford rent and once again have to move,” says Lauren, who plays Joanie. The family find themselves in an informal settlement where they are pummelled by one trauma after the other – from more attacks to losing a child. “Through all of these things, Joanie is sort of losing her sense of reality until eventually, she ends up in an institution.” It is here, Lauren explains, that Joanie is finally stable and finds a home. Through its exploration of the forced removals and the Galant family, Small’s piece explores the concept of “home” and what that means exactly. “People are generally displaced, whether it be within themselves or whether it’s within society.” This is not the first time Lauren has taken on Small’s work. She was involved in a celebration of his writing, performing snippets of his plays and poetry at Artscape last year, where she also performed the end of this piece. Through this process, Lauren got the chance to meet Small, who passed away ear-
lier this year, and says she was intrigued by Joanie Galant-hulle, which was new to her. When she asked for Small’s permission to present it, she discovered that it had never been professionally staged before. Lauren applied for the Suidooster Festival, which is where Small got to see his work performed in its entirety for the first time. For its run at Artscape from Thursday (8 December) until Saturday 17 December, Joanie Galant-hulle will feature Shaun Smith as David Anthony, Dealan Fredericks as Joseph Galant and Kyle Isaacs as “Die Koerantman”, under the direction of Nolan Africa. Lauren had always been a fan of Nolan’s work and says she couldn’t think of anyone better to be the show’s director. “Nolan was very attracted to the story right from the very beginning. He had done Adam Small’s work already and he was keen.” Getting their heads around the heavy subject matter was a little difficult for some of the young actors. “We haven’t necessarily experienced the forced removals ourselves; we only live off the remnants of it.” Nolan eased the cast into the piece by helping them tap into emotions they have experienced. “As the process went on we spoke about loss, relating it to different instances and how that made us feel.” That said, Lauren says Joanie is difficult to play. “It’s such a crazy head space to be in,” she says. “She scares me.” When the show ran at the Suidooster, Lauren says the theatre was so packed that people were even sitting in the aisles. She hopes the show will do as well – if not better – this time round, as she plans to keep Adam Small’s work alive. “I just want to do justice to his work,” Lauren says. V Joanie Galanthulle will be on stage at Artscape Theatre from Thursday 8 to Saturday 17 December. Tickets cost R90 and are available from Compu ticket.

Telling songs and singing stories LOUISA STEYL @lousteyl
H
aving been on the road and playing since his teens, American bluesman Doc MacLean is a vagabond in the true sense of the word. With his weathered beard and beautiful guitars, Doc looks like the kind of guy who should be playing the blues – before you even hear him – which is probably why he says the genre “chose him”. The player is bringing his brand of “contemporary acoustic delta blues, roots Americana”, to Africa – a place he’d only visited in childhood stories before – as part of his Zulu Skies tour. Doc grew up with music, but more folk than blues. His mom still plays the fiddle at 89 and his dad was involved in civil rights and labour organising, which meant exposure to the civil justice and protest elements of folk music. By his early teens, Doc was taking in all the sounds he heard hanging around coffee houses and festivals. It was at the age of 13 though, that he had what he calls his “blues moment”, while listening to a radio show from Chicago. “It was not the soul music or the rockin’ blues of Little Richard that I expected. This show led off with Sonny Boy Williamson and Big Joe Williams. I still remember that record: ‘You better cut that out’ – it just about took my head right off.” Doc was sold. The very next day he bought himself a guitar and harmonica and a year later he was jamming with Memphis guitarist Bukka White and, just two years later, with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. “It was the raw emotion, the honesty, the stories,” he explains.
American bluesman Doc MacLean is a vagabond in the true sense of the word. As soon as he turned 16 he traded a guitar for an old Dodge and set off to explore America. Doc has been travelling most of his life. He lists interesting places in an almost constant stream with such familiarity that you’ll feel like you were right there with him. Like Beale Street in Memphis in the 1970s: “Back when it was overgrown with weed and the Daisy Theatre was a mess of broken glass and plywood.” Or on the night bus out of Chicago: “Heading out at midnight clutching tall cans of beer in the darkness; songs and stories in the back of the bus until dawn.” Then there’s his time in Dawson City, Yu-

kon, a small Canadian town, where he mushed dogs down a frozen river to play a concert in a cabin, “the Northern Lights like a neon sheet overhead, the runners rushing on the ice; moose stew and smoked salmon waiting inside”. Curious women, beaten-up buses, “bootleggers and bandits, truck stops, gas stations and art galleries” – Doc has seen them all and each has its own story. “Every place has its own magic.” It’s these stories and sharing them that is at the heart of what he does. “Finally, I’m a storyteller. I tell songs and sing stories.” He lists off legendary names of people who’ve been part of his musical journey just
as easily as places with surreal stories about each one. There’s feeling like part of the family when playing with Muddy and BB King and his respect for their dedication to their fans by not leaving until every autograph was signed, to Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee who took the time to teach him about life and the music world. There seems to be no shortage of voices in South Africa. Thanks to digital technology, Doc’s been able to get a taste for local music and has heard all the big names on the South African folk and blues scene. “Dan Patlansky has taken South African blues all over the world. When I saw his SA tour schedules I figured out that there is actually a local blues scene.” He’s particularly impressed by the “incredible talent” of Albert Frost and hopes he’ll be South Africa’s next breakout act, but he also hopes to meet more like him. “Like everywhere else in the world, there are very good blues players in practically every town.” There’s one other part to his reconnaissance mission. He hopes to foster a musical exchange between Canada, where he’s settled, and South Africa. Most importantly though, Doc says he’s in South Africa to learn and listen – and sample the local wine. “Buckets of it,” he jokes. “I’ll finally be playing under Zulu Skies. That’s pretty exotic for a North American blues guy.” Doc’s will be at Die Boer with Albert Frost tonight (Wednesday) and Mercury Live’s Bluestown Sessions on Thursday 8 December, before ending his Cape Town tour at Villa Pascal in Durbanville on Friday 9 December. V For more information about Doc, or to follow his journey, visit his Facebook page or zuluskies.blog spot.com
Local actors make U-Turn Television star Lindsey Abrahams (22) from the popular Afrikaans soapie Suidooster is the latest actor to join the U-Turn cast. Lindsey will play the lead in this modern-day Romeo and Juliet musical when the show comes to the Ravensmead Multi-Purpose Centre in Christian Street on Monday (12 December). The Stellenbosch University drama graduate will star opposite Carlo Daniels in this adaptation of the Shakespeare classic that puts the spotlight on drug abuse. Another familiar face in the play is Lee Roodt from Noem My Skollie and Four Corners, who stars in the play directed by seasoned actor/director André Samuels, and written by Christo Da-
vids, who is well known as Errol from 7de Laan. U-Turn is a story of love and tragedy told in the Cape vernacular: secret marriages at Home Affairs, gang warfare, knife duels and the lead character, Romano, on the run. At the heart of it all is Jasmin, whose world is torn when she has to decide between her secret love and her family. The musical is presented by the Cape Heart Theatre Company which hopes to take the show to community organisations, churches and schools around the Western Cape next year. CEO (and actor) Ivan Abrahams explains: “Substance abuse is a social ill that is plaguing our communities, and we want to use thea-
tre as a tool to impact communities.” He invites community representatives to watch one of the two upcoming free performances so they can book the show for awareness or fundraising events. “This is a community education story that simply needs to be told.” U-Turn will be staged at the Ravensmead Multi-purpose Centre on Monday 12 December from 19:00 before a performance at the Fountain Church on the corner of De la Rey and Northway streets on Monday 19 December. Entry for both shows is free. V For more information or to book the show, call 021 931 3351 or 084 886 1857 between 10:00 and 15:00, or email info @capeheart.org.za.

MOVE TOGETHER
Life is about moving. Moving into a new home shouldn’t be daunting. It shouldn’t be about contracts, paperwork and cardboard boxes. It should be about moving into a new season of life - remembering the moves of your past, while embracing the moves you make today. It’s about what colour you’ll paint the living room, and where you’ll teach your kids to ride their bikes. It’s about savouring the journey and spending your time on the things that matter most. At MSP we don’t sell property, we sell your next move in life. Whether you’re moving in, on or up. Making investment moves, moves for your family or better moves for your retirement. We’re here for you, the movers.

Cyclists take to race track T
he Outriders Cycle Club has announced a replacement event for the popular West Coast Express fun ride which will take place on Sunday. This new event (comprising two distances – 78km and 52km) will use Killarney Race Track as the venue, culminating in what should be an exciting finish on the main race circuit. The Pedal Power Association will be using the event as part of their summer league series and this will be the last competitive event before many cyclists take a wellearned festive break. The Outriders originally booked Killarney for their fun-filled festival of cycling. The good news is that this event has simply
been postponed, most likely to happen shortly after the Cape Town Cycle Tour. The new route will be more challenging and there is certainly more climbing to be done. Together with the fantastic opportunity for an exciting and safe finish, this is a must-do event to get some racing in the legs before taking time off to celebrate the festive season guilt-free. Both routes leave the Killarney Race Circuit and head towards Durbanville over Tiekie Draai. The long route goes out the back of Durbanville and past Phisantekraal Airfield, before heading to the silos and then back on Philadelphia Road, turning left at Adderley. The route then turns right onto
Malanshoogte, past Fair Cape Dairies and up the climb to return on Contermans Kloof Road. The route will return pass Burgundy Estate, pass the refinery and back to the race circuit. The finish will be on the track with a final half lap using the back straight and finishing on the main straight opposite the pit area. The short route will go out the back of Durbanville on Adderley and then turn left onto Malanshoogte joining and returning along the same route. Entries will be available at the start. Each year the Outriders Cycle Club hosts a Toy Run, where club members are encouraged to bring toys to a club ride and all toys
are donated to a chosen charity. This year, the ride is taking place on Saturday and the club has invited the public to join in to support this worthy cause. Riders are asked to bring along a soft toy but if people prefer to give alternatively , any contributions will be welcome. All donations this year will be donated to Table View Angels and Peace Home (Sunningdale). The leisurely hour-long ride will depart from the Parklands Planet Fitness at 07:30 and riders are encouraged to dress themselves and their bikes in the Christmas spirit and adorn their bikes with their toys. V Entries are already open, so enter now at www .theoutriders.co.za.

Bolla inspireer jonges AVRIL FILLIES
B
