SMS’e kos R1,50. V Kaartjies is vanaf 10 Desember by Computic ket beskikbaar.

R’WACHT: POLISIE DAAG EERS VINNIG OP NÁ DESPERATE OPROEP OOR DOGTER

Ma moes ‘mislei’ BRENDEN RUITER

@ruitervaniewind

’n

As my

V Na bladsy 2.

NUUS

VERVOLG VAN BLADSY 1 Sers.

@erasmusesme

Ek was bang hy sou

Volgens pendelaars is daar egter selde of ooit enige

The officers gave chase with the driver of the vehicle refusing to move over. “They eventually forced the vehicle to a stop on the N1 off-ramp, whereafter the five occupants jumped out and fled on foot. Two of the suspects were arrested,” says Mostert. The members took the two suspects back to the vehicle and on closer inspection found abalone in the boot of the car. The two men from Delft, both aged 23, were arrested and detained at the Bothasig police. Captain Dawid Kruger, acting station commander, commended the members on their vigilance.

The Cape Town Motorcycle Club (CTMCC) and the Goodwood Sports Club donated R14 680 worth of animal food to the Uitsig Animal Shelter in Fisantekraal after their charity ride on Saturday. CTMCC chair Faffa de Jager said the donation forms part of the club’s regular initiatives to help organisations in need. “We do a lot for charity, both locally and as far afield as towns in the Boland and on the West Coast,” says De Jager. This month’s charity event was made possible by contributions from club members, particularly Johan (Schallas) van Schalkwyk, and the many Absolute Pet specialist vet shops throughout the peninsula. “The

club’s ethos of ‘The more you give – the more you get’ certainly plays a big part in these endeavours,” says De Jager. The club’s next event will be on 21 December when they will donate Christmas gifts

The family of a former South African ice skater is looking for witnesses to the accident that killed their father. Gavin McPhearson (56) was running along De Grendel Avenue at about 19:00 on 18 November when he was hit by a white Opel Corsa. According to Mcphearson’s daughter, Carrie, they just want to know what really happened. “We are shocked at what happened to my father, but would really like to know what happened on that fateful day. Nuwe boek vol sprokies ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

D

So, ’n oningeligte joernalis kan seker maar vergewe word as hy sê: “So Wendy, vertel ons van jou nuutse boek, Die Beste Suid-Afrikaanse Spookstories.” “Nee, nee, dit het in September verskyn. My nuutste ene is Vertel vir my ’n Storie,” antwoord sy.

The Spur Foundation’s Toy Drive will put a smile on the faces of children at the Durbanville Children’s Home and House of Grace this year. This is the season for giving, spending time with family, enjoying ample entertainment and receiving gifts galore. “Unfortunately many children will not be receiving gifts or love this festive season. Therefore, the Spur Foundation will coordinate a national toy collection drive to put a smile on some underprivileged children’s faces,” said Ronel van Dijk, chairperson of the Spur Foundation. Between 1 December and 16 January 2015, collection boxes for new and preloved toys will be available at all Spur, John Dory’s and Panarottis restaurants countrywide. In the Western Cape the beneficiaries are the Durbanville Children’s Home, House of Grace, a place of safety for abandoned and abused children, and Umnqophiso Preprimary, a nursery school and aftercare centre in Lwandle, Strand. The Toy Drive, supported by CourierIT, Longstreet Media and Nampak, collected 77 boxes filled with toys in 2013. According to a 2014 national adoption coalition report, there are 5,2 million orphans in South Africa. “Over 13 000 live in residential care facilities and an estimated 10 000 live on the streets. And that excludes the children that are with their families, but in such dire circumstances where they cannot afford basic necessities, never mind toys,” said Van Dijk.

VRCID delivers clean streets at AGM MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertmb

T

here was backslapping all round when the Voortrekker Road Corridor City Improvement District’s (VRCID) crime and grime fighting machine held its second annual general meeting recently. “The second AGM of the VRCID was a huge success. It was made possible because the outstanding results of the past year made feedback to our members so much easier,” said Hardus Zevenster, chairman of the VRCID board. “I thus cannot help but congratulate the dedicated personnel for their outstaning service in 2014,” he said. “The partnership between the VRCID and the business community was another reason for our success,” said Zevenster. He said corporates and businesses that have established themselves in the VRCID area “have proven invaluable” to their success. Derek Bock, operations manager of the VRCID, said it was very important to continue to build strong relationships. “Our precinct managers, Sarel Strydom (in Bellville), and Rushdi Toefy (in Parow), work with many departments across the City of Cape Town,” he said. “Our success depends on their support as we carry out our daily operations,” said Bock. The VRCID’s key objectives were, according to Bock: “There is a need to begin a two-way conversation with our partners,

investors and community. While visible, our work on the streets needs to be supported by a strong message of investment.” Bock said property prices were beginning to reflect the VRCID’s success. “Tax incentives such as the Urban Development Zone (UDZ) and initiatives such as the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP) have a role to play in attracting investment,” he said. Parking management remained a key issue. “We recognise the urgent need to provide cleaner, safer public parking areas across Bellville. In the new year we will be discussing ways and means to do this with the City of Cape Town.” Thirdly, he highlighted the continued prioritisation of their four social development programmes. “Simply moving people away from an area does not address the root cause of homelessness.” Partners Radio Tygerberg and MES were helping facilitate the establishment of a Hope Centre where street people could access work opportunities and skills training. “This is a much more sustainable approach that we hope will change the social profile in the VRCID area.” Lastly, Bock said the VRCID would continue strengthening ties with the police and city partners. City mayco mamber Sam Pienaar, charged with the progress of the MURP, said he was still as committed to realising the promise of the VRCID to clean up the Voortrekker Road corridor.

Dagga gets up neighbour’s nose MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertmb

T

he smell of dagga fumes and farmyard animals is a “massive irritation” to Dagga Party leader Jeremy Acton’s neighbour. Acton’s neighbour, Etienne Nortje, says he’s been “struggling for months” to get the authorities to take action against Acton. “They did come and have an inspection, but (Acton) just blatantly ignores their warnings,” said Nortje. His complaints include Acton’s keeping backyard animals in Kenridge. “It sounds like a farm next to us. The man breeds with rabbits, he has a bunch of chickens, there’s a beehive and a little while ago his dog ran down the street with a rabbit skin – past where our children play!” said Nortje. “The animal smells attract flies, especially in summer. The man’s pool is greener than grass and will soon create problems with mosquitoes,” he added. He says Acton does nothing to maintain his yard. “I have paid for his side of the lawn to be cut, but he got highly upset with me – he says it’s his rabbits’ food!” Ward councillor Andrea Crous said she was aware of “complaints from neighbours”. “I have been approached by Kenridge residents about a neighbour who has no respect for them because of his unhygienic yard, the droppings from his chickens and rabbits, and the smoking of dagga at all times of the day,” said Crous. “The city is working on the problem, but that is not good enough for the residents. They’ve spoken to this neighbour, but he just couldn’t be bothered.” From Acton’s side, things look a whole lot different. “I have applied for a licence for the 11 chic-

Acton is the leader of the South African Dagga Party and neighbours are complai ning about his “animal husbandry” in Kenridge. kens I keep as well as for my four rabbits. I have yet to get a reply from the city,” he told TygerBurger. He said he asked all his neighbours for consent to keep his chickens – he doesn't’ have a rooster – and only one neighbour consented. He said to keep the fly population down he has five fly traps on his premises that give off a stink, as well as a compost heap, but these “were kept away from neighbours”. The issue with his tall grass is a misunderstanding, he says. “We own guinea pigs. Grass is the only resource I use to feed them. The grass in Kenridge is cut severely short – I have to drive ten kilometres to Stodels to get grass for them,” he said. “I’m trying to maintain a certain length of

grass – 100 mm at least – so as not to have to battle weeds.” He said he resented neighbours imposing their “sense of neatness and lack of environmental awareness” on his family. Acton said his pool did have a lot of algae but was filtered daily and had no mosquitoes. “I am in the process of applying to Cape Nature Conservation for a permit to keep carp and run the pool as an aquaponics operation – a natural pond system. The inspector has been here about four times, but has not seen a single mosquito in that pool.” About dagga smoking, Acton said he used it “in accordance with my knowledge of my rights, for medical reasons, and as a part of my personal spiritual meditations in my relationship with my Creator”. “I do not use it indoors or in the presence

of my family, who don’t like its smell. I always make every effort to check wind direction to minimise any impact (on others).” He is not afraid of prosecution for his dagga use. “It is now possible for any citizen facing charges to stay their prosecution in the High Court. I and many others have summoned the state to scientifically justify the prohibition and prove its constitutionality”.He feels the current neighbourly issues were “very much a clash of perceptions between two individuals with different backgrounds” and hoped these differences could be peaceably resolved. Acton said Crous had never visited his premises. He was simply practicing his own small-scale animal husbandry to the extent his yard allowed it.The local ratepayers’ association said they know of no problems with Acton or his yard. “We haven’t received any complaints. If there was a big problem, I am sure residents would have complained to us already,” said Kenridge The Hills Ratepayers Association chairperson Geordie Hogarth. A senior city official who may not be named confirmed to Crous that they have had “various complaints about the premises”. “The owner has been sued and found guilty and fined about his animals. He has, in the meantime, applied for licences for his animals,” the official said. Should Acton’s applications be unsuccessful, his animals could be removed, or he would be sued again. “We will address the health issues, but. . . will give the complaint through to law enforcement for possible further action, also regarding the beehive.”Acton says even this served a sacred purpose. “The city has no scientific rationale for the banning of bees from residential areas. Bees are essential for a healthy environment and are endangered creatures needing our protection and respect.”

TYGERBURGER Goodwood 9

Christmas fishy feast for Happy Feet Happy Feet, the juvenile penguin who captured the hearts of TygerBurger readers, is well on the road to recovery. He will spending Christmas at the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) along with 445 other abandoned African penguin chicks rescued from around the Pensinsula. Every year between October and January, Sanccob helps hundreds of African penguin chicks abandoned by their parents when they start their annual moulting cycle. During this time the parents replace their “tuxedo” with a new set of waterproof feathers and are unable to hunt for fish and feed their young during the three to four week moulting process. As a result, the chicks yet to fledge, like Happy Feet, are abandoned and face starva-

tion unless conservation organisations like Sanccob intervene. On Christmas day, Happy Feet will have an enriching meal of sardines fed to him by his carers. During the day he will be kept hydrated through regular administration of fresh water and special electrolyte fluids. He will get his strength back through daily doses of vitamins and hone his swimming skills in the pool, so that he will be fit and ready for release back into the wild. In the evening he will sleep in a comfy heated pen with soft matting. As a gesture of thanks to Happy Feet’s rescuer, Liezl Bestbier from Melkbosstrand, Sanccob has adopted Happy Feet for Liezl. Other readers who would like to support the other 445 tiny chicks at Sanccob can

Adopt and name a penguin for R500 by visiting www.sanccob.co.za. Readers will receive a photograph of their chick, a certificate of adoption, a thank you letter and a sticker that says ‘I adopted an African penguin’. The proceeds go directly towards saving these chicks and pays for their food, medication, care and safe transport back to the colonies. Sanccob rehabilitation manager Nicky Stander said if you find a seabird in distress, you shouldn’t crowd around it as seabirds react very negatively to stress. If you are able to approach the bird quietly, gently and firmly wrap it in a bathing towel and call Sanccob on 021 557 6155 or the 24-hour call line on 078 638 3731. Sanccob will arrange to pick it up or direct you to their rehabilitation centre.

Ek het gaan inkopies doen by CapeGate Lifestyle Centre en my motor gesluit. Dankie, Andrea! - Anoniem V What are people’s problem with Hadi das? How does one remove a bird from an area? It’s not a rhino; the bird will just fly back. Unless you mean by remove and kill it. Stop complaining about petty things. - Louise, Durbanville ) SMS’e kos R1,50 elk.

Traffic fine run around After taking out my car license I forgot to display it on my window. When I saw a traffic officer writing out a fine, he explained that there were two amounts on it – R500 if your license lapsed or R300 if you took it out and did not display it. So it’s two weeks later and I want to pay it. I first try the internet, as fines can be paid via Absa. The only problem is there is no reference number on the fine, so the payment will not go through. I then go to Absa, where the cashier tells me that the Traffic Department’s system is offline and I have to wait for a second letter through the SA Post Office. No problem. So I go off to the Traffic Department in Durbanville, where I am told that they can only take the R500 payment, not the R300 one. This can only happen at the Parow Traffic Department. I then called the main number, where I was told that the fine has not been captured so I can’t pay it. Why issue fines if they know that the offender can’t pay it? Is the Traffic Department run by human beings? I am beginning to wonder... FEDUP Email

‘Dog lovers’ often neglect their pets After reading the SMS from Anonymous, I feel the need to “bite back” (TB SMSes, 26 November). So many who regard themselves as “dog lovers” forget that while they are at work, away for a weekend or at times even a week, we the “lonely, old or just selfish” are subjected to the continuous sad howling, whining and barking from many a neglected “pet”.

You leave home at the crack of dawn, returning some eight hours or more later. The so-called “pet” is given its food and then the owner is off to bed and sleeps like a log, never hearing the night barking. And so it is every single day. How many genuine loving hours are spent with the animal? As far as you are concerned your dog protects your home and the barking “is their way of communicating”. To whom, I ask? To the phrase “get a life”, have you not noticed that we who complain about the barking are very much alive. We are the ones who hear and are not deaf to the sounds of an animal in distress, just surviving a “dog’s life” day after day. PAWS AWHILE Email

VERTEL MY DIE OU STORIE Epos

CHARL VAN WYK Epos

The City of Cape Town is preparing for a busy summer holiday.

City goes all out to keep beaches safe this summer The City of Cape Town is doing all it can to ensure the safety of beach goers. A total of 250 trained and accredited lifeguards will be deployed to various beaches between 10:00 and 18:00 daily. This service will be boosted by lifesaving clubs on some beaches, Lifesaving Western Province’s volunteer services, and the National Sea Rescue Institute. In addition, there will be 218 lifeguards on duty who will oversee the city’s 36 public swimming pools over the holidays. “We want to emphasise that safety is a shared responsibility between the city and our beach goers and pool users. While the city does provide lifeguards in conjunction with our partners, this service does not exist to take the place of a parent or guardian’s supervision of children,” says city mayco member for Community Services and Special Projects, Belinda Walker. “Members of the public are encouraged to swim only in designated swimming areas indicated by flags and only where our lifeguards are on duty. There are also law enforcement officers patrolling beaches to assist in ensuring that people swim only in designated areas. We ask that all people respect the instructions of both lifeguards and law enforcement officers and also report any irresponsible behaviour in the water, such as people swimming off the rocks, so that they can pre-emptively keep people safe.”

Conductors have a chance to shine Entry forms are still available for the third Len van Zyl Conductors’ Competition, South Africa’s only competition for young conductors. The competition offers performance opportunity and master classes with international conductors; the semi-finalists and finalists perform with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, and the winner receives an all-expenses paid one-month internship with the famed Philadelphia Orchestra in America and two months’ of study at Northwestern University in Chicago with maestro Victor Yampolsky. Entry forms can be downloaded from the CPO website at www.cpo.org.za. The closing date is 15 March 2015, after which a preliminary selection will be made. Those chosen will participate in the preliminary round in June next year, with the semi-finals and finals in February 2016. V Visit www.cpo.org.za for more information.

Call for St Johns reunion BRENDEN RUITER

@ruitervaniewind

Former house parents at the St Johns hostel in Cape Town are holding a reunion for those who grew up there. The hostel was founded in 1918 by the Anglican Church, but closed its doors in 1990. Ursula and Victor Spolander were house parents at the hostel for 20 years. They are inviting everyone who ever lived at the hostel to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Bothasig on 27 December at 14:30 to relive the “good old days”. “St Johns was such a happy place,” recalls Ursula, “yeah, there were problems here and there, but the children were mostly a happy bunch.” She said vulnerable children were

brought to the hostel where they were brought up in as close to a family set-up as possible. “As house parents we lived close to the boys. They were also not held behind locked gates and doors and were free to come and go as they pleased.” The Spolanders say they were one big family in those days. “My two daughters literally grew up at the hostel, so they had many brothers. If someone tried to mess with the girls, they had more than 60 boys on their case!” recalls Victor. They are also very proud of what some of the children achieved. “One is currently a member of parliament while others grew up to become leaders in business. Another is a professor in Norway.” V For more information contact the Stoplanders on 021 558 0572 or 083 3545533.

In response to the pressing need to accelerate economic growth and job creation, the provincial government has joined forces with Deloitte to launch the Western Cape Funding Fair. The fair aims to kick-start business initiatives in the province and provide impetus for job creation in urban and rural areas by facilitating face-to-face contact between project promoters, entrepreneurs and funding institutions. This week Deloitte and the Western Cape department of economic development and tourism announced a call for applications via the official website www.westerncapefundingfair.co.za. The inaugural Western Cape Funding Fair will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 18 March next year and will provide a unique platform for Western Cape-based bankable, sustainable, profit-seeking projects and businesses requiring a minimum of R10 million in funding to connect with funders. Alan Winde, Western Cape minister of economic opportunities, says he is confident the fair will go a long way to assisting budding entrepreneurs. “We know that project funding is a stumbling block for many entrepreneurs,” he says. “Through this fair, which is a joint initiative between government and business, we are aiming to address this.”

The Western Cape Funding Fair also aims to educate and empower project promoters and entrepreneurs on the holistic approach and processes to follow in turning ideas into bankable business plans. These plans have a higher probability of attracting the right type of funding and investment. “Put simply, the rationale is to get project promoters in front of possible funders and investors in a focused one-day session,” says Marius Alberts, Deloitte Western Cape regional leader. Increasingly, entrepreneurship is being viewed by government and the private sector as the primary means to drive economic and social development. Recently the provincial government announced that 30 000 entrepreneurs had accessed its small business support services in the past year. SMEs are seen as key to tackling the high unemployment rate, with the National Development Plan envisaging that about 90% of jobs will be created in small and expanding companies by 2030. “We encourage businesses from all over the province and across a broad range of industries to enter,” says Alberts. The application process for funding closes on 31 January 2015. The fair comprises project pitches, entrepreneur-focused presentations and an exhibition on 18 March 2015:

Hospital hunger eased for kids H

undreds of hungry children are fed weekly by Meals on Wheels at the Parow Preparatory School, De Vrijzee Primary School and two outpatient clinics at Tygerberg Hospital. “Most of the children arrive hungry at these schools and at the hospital,” says Linda Louw, manager of Meals on Wheels in Parow. Louw heads a massive feeding scheme that provides more than 115 000 meals per year, of which close to 300 per week are handed out to these children. “The Tygerberg Children’s Hospital paediatric outpatients is a busy service,” says Dr Cilla Springer, a paediatrician at this hospital. She says children from both the Cape metropole and outlying areas in the platteland attend these subspecialist clinics. In order to reach the hospital by 07:00, children leave home early in the morning and have to travel long distances by public transport. The children often spend many hours to have their folders opened, then waiting for their physician consultations and later queueing for the pharmacy. According to a research study by a social worker some time ago, food security is a problem for a significant proportion of these families. The majority of these children are from a lower socioeconomic group. “Meals on Wheels has served an invaluable role in improving the physical and emotional morale of our children and their caregivers and we thank this generous organisation for their commitment in providing a vital service to our families,” Springer says. Louw, who also heads the Tygerberg Service Centre for the Aged, says she is very proud of the seniors at this centre, ma-

Irene Castle, AnneMarie Hansen from Ruyterwacht with little patient Eugene, Gabriela and Liana de Araujo (grandchildren of the Castles) and Alfred Castle. ny of whom it is a passion to be involved with Meals on Wheels. “There are two senior couples, the Castles and the Josephs, for whom it is an an-

nual highlight to serve the special Christmas treats to these children. They have respectively reached out at the hospital for 11 and six years now,” says Louw.

Steer away from road rage Jail time, serious injuries, death and a lifetime of regret await you if you resort to road rage, warns ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing. “Almost every motorist has experienced some sort of frustration while driving but it is how far you take it that could mean the difference between life and death,” she says. “Road rage is a criminal offence. Anyone found harassing motorists on the road will be charged. They could face charges such reckless and negligent driving, harassment and others depending on the seriousness of the crime.” If a motorist is harassed, they should note the registration number of the vehicle driven by the suspect and call the police. “Do not retaliate. This could aggravate the situation. You can get killed,” she says. She refers to a recent incident to which ER24 responded. “The two drivers had an altercation and they stopped at an intersection. One driver climbed out of his vehicle and assaulted the other motorist. As he walked back to his car the other driver drew his firearm and shot him in the chest. He died on scene,” she says. Henning Jacobs, trauma support coordinator at ER24, urges people to stay calm and do as little as possible if provoked. He says road rage incidents are preventable if people do not act out of anger. He advises drivers to enter their vehicles in a peaceful frame of mind prior to driving. “Music helps some people. Breathing exercises can also help you stay calm.” He said road rage is linked to people experiencing personal or work-related problems. These emotions can lead to road rage. “Therefore, road rage can be prevented if people have coping skills in place.”

Jesse Clegg unplugs as he hits the road for gigs LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

S

inger and songwriter Jesse Clegg is currently busy with his longest tour to date. With more than 20 stops across the country, Jesse is using the tour to promote his latest album, Jesse Clegg Live and Unplugged. “We’ve been playing these acoustic shows for the last 18 months and they’ve been getting a really good response,” Jesse explains, adding that people often come up to him after the show asking for an acoustic album. He decided to record one of his acoustic performances at The Venue, in Johannesburg, where ambient mics helped to capture the “essence” or “vibe” of the show. Jesse Clegg Live and Unplugged is made up of reimagined songs from his previous albums, as well as covers of songs that have influenced his music. “When you have just two guitars and two voices, you really have to be creative with how you present the songs.” Jesse says he had to work hard to rework songs, some of which are big rock tracks, in a way that would still be new and interesting. “It’s a very stripped down, very intimate set.” For the recording, Jesse was joined on stage by guitarist Richard Onraet, who is joining him on tour, percussionist Jason Sampson and bassist Roger Hobbs. The album was still mixed in studio like normal albums, but the live recording gives it a “spontaneous energy”. Jesse’s acoustic arrangements will be exposed to all kinds of audiences as the tour sees him playing everywhere from festivals to smaller clubs. “It’s a diverse range of shows, sizes and formats.” He’ll also be taking his band to a lot of new venues. “It’s a big experiment.” Jesse’s unplugged album was released specifically for the tour, but he’ll be back in studio to work on his next album as soon as it’s done. He’s hoping to release his new material as soon as March, but he’ll need to decide which of the 35 songs he’s currently wor-

Funky new beats for De Wallen LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

ith a new drummer and a string of big shows behind their name, De Wallen are powering on into the new year. TygerBurger last spoke to the Kuils River band before the release of their debut-album, Dirty Deals in December 2013. Since then they’ve supported bands like aKing, Taxi Violence and Van Coke Kartel, performed at Ramfest and toured to Johannesburg and the Garden Route. “It was my first time up to Joburg, not a big fan,” guitarist Pieter Bekker says, adding that Ramfest was also a bit of an adventure. He got lost picking up equipment in Cape Town and made it to the festival in Helderstroom with minutes to spare. “He literally pitched up as we were going on stage,” frontman Jeandré Swanepoel chips in. “We’re the same ol’ De Wallen, same ol’ nonsense, still don’t know what the hell we’re doing,” he says.

New single But despite the band’s “devil-may-care” attitude, they still spend a lot of time working on breaking into the industry. They released a new single, “Heart Rate Rocker”, in May and Jeandré says it’s more light-hearted than the material on Dirty Deals. “After the first album we had time to reflect on the writing process and back then we thought we were going to be a serious rock ‘n roll band, but we realised we’re not all that serious.” Jeandré describes “Heart Rate Rocker” as a “tongue-in cheek jingle about the girls from Stellenbosch” and says fans can expect more of the same when they record again. De Wallen’s Jeandré Swanepoel and Pieter Bekker visited the Orange Couch recently. fect the band’s sound when they record again, thanks to new drummer Andre Wentzel. “We’re lucky to have snapped him up because he’s a little older than us and a lot more business minded.” Local fans may recognise André as the drummer for 3rd World Spectator, who recently parted ways.

Funky beats The band have been hard at work writing new material and they’ll be spending some time reworking old and new songs with André to accommodate his style. “You’ll maybe start seeing some more groove, funk and hip-hop beats,” Pieter says. “The hip-hop element is definitely going to be introduced,” Jeandré adds, pointing out that André couldn’t have joined the band

at a better time. “We’ve been working on new material, but we haven’t committed to it yet.” The band members have been figuring out their own parts in the new songs, but André’s new influence will help them polish the overall sound. By dié restaurant kan jy smul aan ’n Joostburger DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

R

“Daar sal 10 franchise-geleenthede in Suid-Afrika wees, waarvan drie in Kaapstad en 20 internasionaal,” voeg hy by.

Lots of special gift ideas for animal lovers Many animal lovers want to do something for animals at this time of year, but don’t know just what. Whatever you choose, just don’t surprise someone with an animal, unless it has been properly planned, said Jennifer Davies of Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW). She has some better suggestions. “Animal welfares around the country desperately need help and funding, check their websites to see how you can help them. “Animal shelters are always in need of fleece blankets and towels, as well as pet food and plenty of good-size dog bowls or ice cream containers,” said Davies. The FAW has a dog sponsorship programme whereby you sponsor a dog awaiting a home for only R200 a month – either

for yourself or as a super gift for someone. The organisation emails you a personalised certificate, which you can give or email to the recipient. Alternatively, people can sponsor a kennel or donate any sum of money they like, specifying what they would like it to be spent on, for example sterilisations or vet bills. . The Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre urgently needs funding for the move to their new premises – people can “Buy a Brick” for R100 – every cent of which goes towards the new, improved centre. They also sell beautiful hand-crafted furniture at their shop at the Cape Garden Centre in Joostenbergvlakte. . The Animal Welfare Society in Stellenbosch (AWSS) has a shoebox initiative un-

til 20 December in which you fill a shoebox with pet food and goodies and a R100 donation. . The organisations Tears and African Tails have gorgeous 2015 calendars featuring rescued animals. Sanccob, the “penguin people”, sells cute children’s books, stuffed toys, and even jewellery at their shop in Table View. . The McGregor’s Eseltjiesrus, a sanctuary for donkeys, has Eseltjiesrus wine. Beauty Without Cruelty (BWC) have a vegan cookbook and T-shirts. . Many people give gift vouchers and place them inside a card. Tears, the SPCA, BWC and Mdzananda Animal Clinic all have charming options. If you want to give your time, Davies said that animal welfares always need volun-

teers. “Maintenance, building work, cleaning, working in charity shops or at adoption days, or fundraising are all options. Many also need help with the animals themselves,” she said. For example, UARC and AWSS have dog walking clubs and need people to socialise cats, and Dassenberg Horse Rescue near Melkbosstrand needs dog walkers and experienced horse groomers. Davies emphasises: “The absolute worst gift you can give is a surprise animal. Unless it has been planned for a long time and is definitely wanted, never give pets as presents.” “Every year, animal welfares receive thousands of these thoughtless ‘gifts’ a couple of months later,” she said.

’n Sege wink vir Durbies SAREL BURGER

D

Swimming is more than just a sport Western Province Aquatics (WPA) will host its swimming championship at the Bellville municipal pool from 10 to 14 December. This is the most prestigious provincial event of the year, with the top swimmers competing for top honours. WPA is continually trying to grow the sport. Swimming is a life skill and is a vital part of the community. There are many swim schools available, but not all are certified to the correct standards, or registered to WPA. As the custodians of the sport, WPA is vigilant with regards to the requirements one needs in order to open learn-to-swim programmes. There are various regulations to be put in place in order to get registered and accredited with WPA. A few very important criteria needed for swim teachers/coaches to be registered to WP Aquatics/Swim South Africa are: Level 1 first aid certificate; official police clearance; swim South Africa certification (completed learn to swim instructors course); proof of annual registration to WPA/Swimming SA; the learn to swim school be registered to WPA. It is imperative parents request proof of current registration to WPA. Parents can check the Western Province website for registered learn-to-swim coaches. WPA has been trying to develop the sport and take swimming to all communities. There are some fantastic projects in place to educate coaches and put safe, fun swim programmes in place, like the porta-pool school project. These are portable pools set up at various schools in order to get children educated on the importance of this vital life skill.

RACING: AN EXCITING RANGE OF BATTLES ON OFFER AT KILLARNEY

Sizzling season’s end

W

ith a kaleidoscope of motorsport attractions on offer, Saturday’s final main circuit meeting of the year at Killarney includes exciting national participation and seems set to bring the seasonal curtain down in style. Topping the bill, the opening round of the new All-Africa Endurance Series is going to be supported by the final leg of the Power Series sponsored by Wingfield Motors. In ad-

dition, in a build-up to an attempt on the African truck pulling record, local muscle man Ben Visagie (Kraaifontein) is ready to attempt to drag a 20 ton truck a distance of 50 metres along the Killarney main straight.

Longdistance matchup The long distance three-hour race has attracted entries from all the main centres in South Africa. Here it is going to be particu-

larly interesting to see how the hugely powerful 8.4 litre, V10 Dodge Viper in the hands of Gauteng’s Charl and Harry Aranges fares against new Western Cape champion Francis Carruthers and Nick Adcock at the wheel of the slick Juno SS3 that until now, has dominated the Sports and GT events in the Cape this year. Others to watch in this one include Greg Mills and Deon Joubert in a Pillbeam LMP

Francis Carruthers, leading the field in his Juno, will be the Cape Town hopeful for the African 3 Hour Endurance Race.

100 that is being prepared for next year’s prestigious Le Mans 24-Hour race, while Dave Alhardeff and the Lambert family are sharing Dave’s American Panoz V8. The Power Series includes events for the brutal V8 Masters where although championship leader Marcel Angel is a fair distance ahead of the pack, he could still be caught by Craig Jarvis. And with all the cars that were damaged in that monumental pileup at the start of the opening event last month now repaired and back in action, there should be a full field. Then, while Wayne Wilson (Nissan Primera) and Jesse Huggett (VW Jetta) deserve admiration for taking on a full field of class A Beemers in the Midas Clubman events, it seems more likely that the winner’s laurels will be claimed by an M3 in the hands of Junaid Slamang, Ebrahim Levy or Achmat Levy, or the spectacular Danie van Niekerk in his 325.

Hard fight Although versatile Nick Adcock is to share a powerful sports car in the three-hour, it is unlikely to affect his potential title winning performance in the one make Makita Supercar events. But he will have to outscore drivers like Brad Wadeley, Steve McCarthy, Andrew Moffitt and Jarryd Evans. With class C exponent Paul Simon holding an overall lead in the Jive GTi Challenge, this class is likely to be as hard fought as the frontal battle in class A where second placed Nian du Toit will be the driver to catch.

Fighters to battle it out until there is only one man standing AWA’s ultimate fight night on Thursday 11 December features a 23-man Coca-Cola Royal Rumble battle where the last man standing will exit the ring with the most coveted belt. The current title holder is Miss Gorgeous who vows to keep the belt for a second year running even though he’ll be the first man

entering the ring and will have to battle through the full complement of 22 remaining wrestlers. If he manages to do that, he’ll be the first man in AWA history to accomplish a back-to-back victory. Johnny Palazzio comes back all guns blazing for this match to defend his cruiser weight title he was able to retain after a bat-

tle with Mr Money three months ago. This was the fight where Palazzio broke his leg and continued in the ring despite the injury. As for Mr Money, losing to Palazzio in the previous match means he’ll have to wear a dress on the night of the Royal Rumble – the result of the lost challenge. Other superstars set to contest will be the

All Africa Heavyweight Champion – the Missing Link, Shaun Koen, Max The Body, Sammy Swiegers, Ed-Electric and El-Marco. If you’re expecting absolute chaos, you won’t be disappointed in this massive, unrestricted brawl. The Parow Civic Centre once again hosts the action and the first fight starts at 19:30.
