ense wat vroeër vanjaar deur die Stad Kaapdstad van Richmondpark naby Richwood na Wolwekraal verskuif is, kom nou maar weer terug.

Die mense is verskuif, omdat daar ’n suksesvolle grondeis vir die grond was en dit nou ontwikkel gaan word. TygerBurger het al by verskeie geleenthede berig oor hoe die mense, sommiges ook eisers, na die onderontwikkelde Wolwerivier sowat 40 km verder, moes skuif. Hulle is met bakkies en vragmotors aangery en elkeen het ’n sogenaamde “beginnerpak” gekry, wat sinkplate vir huise insluit.

Vir sommige het die ontberinge by Wolwerivier te veel geword en hulle het teruggetrek na die bekende – Richmondpark, oftewel Die Bos.

Allan Sullivan, ’n suksesvolle grondeiser en een van die mense wat na Wolwerivier verskuif is, sê dit sal nie nou help mense wil terug nie.

“Toe ek hulle destyds aangemoedig het om nie die R6 500 (wat die Stad Kaapstad aangebied het in ruil daarvoor dat die mense moet trek) te aanvaar nie, het hulle nie na my geluister nie.

“Noudat die geld klaar is en dit nie meer so goed gaan nie, nou wil hulle weer Richmondpark toe gaan,” sê Sullivan.

Rudi Adams, voorsitter van die komitee wat sake namens die eisers bedryf, sê hulle wil nie betrokke raak by wat by Wolwerivier aan die gang is nie.

“Ons is die wettige eienaars van die grond en is net gemoeid met wat daar aangaan. Ons het sekerheidswagte op die grond wat ver-

’n Rukwind in die middel van Goodwood, in die hartjie van die somer, het daarvoor gesorg dat ’n paartjie en hul buitelandse gas amper bokveld toe is.

Toe Martin Swanepoel, sy vrou en hul gas uit Portugal Maandag stelling onder sy prieel inneem, het hulle hul reggemaak vir ’n luilekker kuiertjie. Wat volgende gebeur het, het niemand sien kom nie. “Ons sit nog so lekker toe sien ons net plate en die hele prieel breek op. My hele agterplaas is onderdak en die hele dekselse ding is stukkend gewaai,” sê ’n omgekrapte Swanepoel.

Hy sê dit was so amper of die hele ding het lelik skeefgeloop. “Toe een van die groter balke afbreek, tref dit ons gas so skrams teen die kop. Ek is net bly niemand is ernstig beseer nie.”

Volgens Swanepoel is dit die eerste keer dat so iets by sy huis, wat hy reeds sedert die sestigerjare bewoon, gebeur. Dit is ook nie asof daar fout was met hoe die prieel vasgesit is nie. “Die ding is al lank aan en is deur die munisipaliteit goedgekeur. Ons wag nou om te hoor of die versekering gaan uitbetaal.”

“Dit was baie stadiger as wat dit die laaste paar weke was. Wat vreemd is van die wind (wat die Swanepoels getref het), is dat dit net skielik opgekom het. Gewoonlik bou die

wind op tot ’n sekere spoed,” sê Turner.

Sy sê somerwinde in die Kaapse Skiereiland is normaal.

“Die Kaap is bekend vir die suidooster wat in die somermaande waai, maar ’n rukwind is raar.

‘Christmas chicks’ go wild Hundreds of endangered African penguins are back in the wild thanks to the rescue efforts of the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) and its conservation partners.

Since late October 2014, 570 abandoned African penguin chicks have been rescued and admitted to Sanccob’s seabird rehabilitation centres in Table View (Western Cape) and Cape St Francis (Eastern Cape).

Every year between October and January hundreds of African penguin chicks are abandoned by their parents during the annual moult when the parents are unable to swim and hunt for food while they wait for their new waterproof feathers to grow out.

As a result, the chicks not yet fledged face starvation.

Sanccob is making sure that endangered penguin chicks make it back to the wild.

The abandoned penguin chicks are admitted to Sanccob with the help of colony managers, SANParks (Table Mountain National Park and Addo Elephant National Park’s Marine section) and CapeNature. These colony managers have dedicated staff, who identify abandoned chicks by using a number of monitoring tools. Abandoned chicks are collected weekly by colony managers and transported to Sanccob’s centres for rehabilitation.

These ‘Christmas chicks’ (as they are fondly named) spend between six to 12 weeks undergoing careful rehabilitation at Sanccob.

Hundreds of these penguins have already been successfully released back into the wild.

A woman is fraudulently collecting money for the Boyes Helping Hands non-profit organisation (NPO).

According to the Milnerton NPO’s founder, Deborah Boyes, her organisation has never gone door-to-door to raise funds.

“This woman has been described to be in her early fifties, with dark hair of medium length, well spoken and apparently extremely convincing,” says Boyes.

The suspect apparently goes from door-todoor in the Bothasig area, showing people

articles written about the NPO. She would then ask for funds, which according to Boyes, has been going extremely well for her.

“She collected a large amount of money, according to the woman who informed me.

She had a list and people were donating R100 notes. I do not have any people fund-raising for me,” continues Boyes.

The NPO is “struggling terribly” to raise funds to buy land to build a home for abused women and children, so news of someone using their name in vain is obviously very upsetting for Boyes.

Die bestuurder van die Libertas-aftreeoord in Goodwood sê as iemand nie ’n gevaar vir inwoners inhou nie, het hy nie die reg om daardie persoon te verwyder nie.

Hennie du Plessis het gereageer op klagtes van sommige inwoners dat ’n man wat langs die muur van die aftreeoord woon, ’n steurnis is.

Volgens een van die inwoners met wie TygerBurger gepraat het, lê die man meeste dae net daar, maar daar is kere waar hy teen die muur staan en urineer.

“As hy dit teen die muur doen, dan wonder ek waar hy sy ander goed doen. ’n Mens is al amper te bang om in Wallacestraat te loop,” sê die inwoner wat nie haar naam genoem wil hê nie uit vrees vir viktimisasie.

Sy beweer verder dat die man se ma ’n in-

woner van die oord is. “Sy vat vir hom kos, maar ek weet regtig nie waar hy hom was nie. Ek het hom onlangs gesien toe hy nogal netjies geskeer en als was. My probleem is dat as een mens eers hier woon, kan daar binnekort nog mense kom. Ek sien reeds nog

’n man en ’n vrou hang somtyds hier rond.”

Du Plessis het bevestig dat die man buite die heining op die matras slaap en dat sy ma ’n inwoner is. “Ons het al alles probeer om hom weg te kry, maar hy oortree geen wet nie, so dit is moeilik. Ek het al wetstoepas-

sers en die polisie gebel om die man te verwyder.

“Die ou van wetstoepassing het aan my verduidelik dat die man regte het en nie sommer net verwyder kan word nie.

“My klagtes het ook al tot by die plaaslike raadslid, Cecile Janse van Rensburg, gestrek,” sê Du Plessis.

Hy sê hy het nog nie klagte ontvang dat die man mense pla nie. “Sodra hy mense begin lastig val of die perseel betree, dan gaan hy in die moeilik wees.”

Vir Du Plessis is die situasie meer hartseer as wat dit gevaarlik is. “’n Mens kan probeer om die ou te help, maar dan moet hy gehelp wil word. Daar is mense wat vir hom klere en beddegoed gee, maar is dit regtig die tipe hulp wat hy nodig het?”

TygerBurger het besoek by die man se lêplek afgelê, maar hy was nie daar nie. Daar was wel ’n matras en ’n kombers.

Ná jare van ongelukkigheid en baie klagtes is ’n man dood toe hy vermoedelik die N7 tussen Du Noon en Richwood onwettig wou oorsteek.

Volgens Danny Bolton, voorsitter van die Richwood-belastingbetalersvereniging (RBV), is die sterfte nie geïsoleerd nie en kan nog te wagte wees as daar nie dringend ingegryp word nie.

Inwoners van Du Noon, wes van die nasionale pad, waag daagliks hul lewens om na Richwood aan die oorkant te beweeg.

Vervoer na werksplekke, skole en winkels is meer toeganklik aan Richwood se

kant van die pad.

Goed en wel, sê Bolton, maar dan moet daar veiliger toegang geskep word.

“Ons besware en klagtes val jare reeds op dowe ore. Die beste uitkoms gaan wees dat daar ’n voetbrug oor die N7 gebou word, maar soos dit nou lyk is dit ’n droom wat ver in die toekoms dalk kan waar word,” sê Bolton.

Volgens Bolton beweeg sowat 2 000 mense elke dag oor die N7. “Ons het verlede jaar in samewerking met verskeie rolspelers, onder wie provinsiale verkeersbeamptes, ’n inligtingsveldtog langs die N7 gehou. Daar is toe besluit dat ’n duikweg onder die N7 as tydelike oplossing gebruik moet word. Die probleem hier is dat

mense meer as 500 m verder weg moet beweeg voor hulle deur die duikweg kan kom. Dit gebeur nie sommer nie, want mense is haastig om by hul bestemmings uit te kom,” sê Bolton.

Ao. Daphne O’Reilly, woordvoerder van die polisie in Milnerton, het bevestig dat ’n onbekende man Vrydagaand op die N7 gesterf het. “Volgens inligting tot ons beskikking het die oorledene op die middelstreep gestaan, toe hy deur die kantspieël van ’n Quantum-minibus getref is. Toe hy val is hy deur ’n aankomende bakkie raakgery,” sê O’Reilly.

An educational outreach programme in Delft has been boosted by the donation of a car to help them with their activities.

Hope Cape Town donor relations manager Fahim Docrat said they were overjoyed with the generous sponsorship of a Chevrolet Aveo Sedan from Williams Hunt Cape Town.

“We are thrilled with this sponsorship and are looking forward to putting this vehicle to good use, allowing us to continue to operate in the more than twenty communities we support,” he said.

“We are very grateful to Williams Hunt Cape Town who are based in Bellville for acknowledging the work we do and for their enthusiasm and dedication to making a positive difference in the community.”

Betalingsreëlings kan ook gemaak word.

In sommige gevalle kan só ’n reëling daartoe lei dat die betrokke persoon net hoef te betaal wat hy of sy kan bekostig.

“Die hele samelewing, insluitend sakeondernemings, skole, kerke, maatskaplike organisasies, asook huiseienaars wat huishulpe en tuiniers in diens het, word dringend versoek om te help deur mense in te lig oor die belangrikheid om vir hul huise te betaal,” sê Mamkeli.

New load shedding schedule for city A

Dogs give man new lease on life DES FEATHERSTONE

I

n a world where most people are so accustomed to seeing homeless people that they barely notice them, two members of the community took positive action.

While walking her dogs, Parklands resident Reese Harley noticed a homeless man sleeping in the park. That’s not unusual. But in an area where people often distrust the homeless so much they don’t even make eye contact, Reese began talking to him. His name is Michael Ntehelang and they gradually got to know each other during her evening walks.

Reese provided a few things to make his life more comfortable, and then she saw an opportunity to change his life completely.

Reese runs a charity organisation called Pawfriends, helping township dogs and cats.

She gets them sterilised to prevent unwanted litters and helps obtain veterinary care when needed. She also sometimes works with the Fallen Angels animal rescue organisation.

Fallen Angels is a haven for forgotten and neglected animals near Melkbosstrand.

They were started in February 2014, when Gayl Basson sold her house in Flamingo Vlei to buy a piece of land.

Gayl and Shireen Williams are working very hard, with limited resources, to create a much-needed shelter for animals in need.

Table View and surrounding areas is a vast, sprawling urban area which includes the poor communities of Dunoon and Joe Slovo, yet there is no SPCA or animal welfare shelter in the area. All the organisations working in the area rely on a foster system to house animals in need.

Fallen Angels still has no electricity and very little infrastructure. They needed help with building enclosures and kennels, as well as help in the general care of their animals. Reese saw a person who was down on his luck and needed a job and a home, so she

Shireen didn’t hesitate. She trusted Reese’s judgement and immediately went to fetch Michael and his few belongings.

After three years on the streets, a bad family situation and a drug history, Michael (22) is now living and working at Fallen Angels.

He has been there for two months and is very happy. He loves working with the dogs and helping with the cleaning and gardening. He is learning new skills every day and is very happy to have a place to stay.

Fallen Angels and Pawfriends have changed the destiny of many animal’s lives.

This time they changed the destiny of a human life.

annie Moolman is ’n wandelende ensiklopedie as dit kom by dinge wat hom na aan die hart lê. Soos sy moedertaal, geskiedenis, digters – van hier en van ver, lewend en dood – en skrywers. Skrywers wat gedigte met behulp van musiek ingekleur het en nuwe lewe in soms vergete gedigte geblaas het.

Dis ook die titel van sy nuwe produksie, Digters en Skrywers, wat op 22 en 25 Januarie by Die Boer opgevoer word.

Passievol Dat Jannie passievol is oor dié projek, is verseker. In een asem noem hy die name van ’n hele rits digters en komponiste en eindig dan met ’n aanhaling van Henry Purcell, ’n Britse komponis wat in die 17de eeu geleef het: “Soos digkuns die harmonie van woorde is, so is musiek dié van note. UK school girl helps chicks Leila Silkstone from a school in the United Kingdom raised £310 (about R5 300) for her eighth birthday so she could adopt and save two endangered African penguin chicks.

Instead of gifts, Leila asked friends and family to donate money to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob). Sanccob also got local cake-maker, Just Caked, to donate a birthday cake which alone raised £40 (abour R700).

On the last day of the year Leila and her family visited Sanccob’s centre in Table View to collect her two penguin adoption packs. Sanccob’s newest ambassador penguin, Skipper, was there to say a special thank you from all the staff and penguins at Sanccob.

Every year around Christmas Sanccob admits hundreds of African penguin chicks abandoned by their parents in the colonies.

Without intervention by Sanccob and conservation partners, these chicks would not survive. Like Leila, people can help save these endangered African penguins by naming and adopting an African penguin from Sanccob for R500. Each adoption pack includes a photograph of your penguin, a certificate of adoption, a thank you letter and an adoption sticker.

Gun elkeen in ons land sy eie mening Die nuwe jaar het op ’n tragiese en ontstellende noot afgeskop met verlede week se slagting van 17 Franse burgers in Parys.

Hoewel die meeste lande dié terreurdaad ten sterkste veroordeel het, het vryheid van spraak weer op nuut onder die vergrootglas gekom. Baie kommentators meen dat die satiriese koerant Charlie Hebdo alle grense van vryheid van spraak oortree het deur sy draakstekery met Islam en ander godsdienste.

Wat dié kommentators nie in ag neem nie, is dat vryheid van spraak in die Franse tradisie geen grense ken nie – ’n land met ’n eeue oue geskiedenis van skerp en soms kwetsende satire.

Hoewel dié soort satire in weinig ander lande in die wêreld geduld word – selfs nie eers in die VSA en Brittanje nie – hou die beginsel daarvan tog vir ons almal in Suid-Afrika ’n les in.

Verdraagsaamheid teenoor mense wat nie dieselfde mening as jy huldig nie, is heel moontlik die grootste hiervan. As iemand nie aan jou kerk behoort, jou politieke sienswyse deel nie, nie vir die dieselfde rugbyspan as jy skree nie, beteken dit nie dat daardie persoon verkeerd is en sosiaal gekastreer moet word nie. Guns afford self protection I have been reading with interest the current debate between the anti and pro-gun groups.

Predictably, that old and well-used expression that “those who live by the sword will die by the sword” has made its appearance. A very reasonable sentiment, to be sure, but it does not stand up to scrutiny from a legitimate gun owners point of view.

Genghis Khan lived by the sword. So does the modern-day ISIS. Genghis did, and ISIS surely will, die by the sword.

The rest of us, who need to protect ourselves from those who, like them, seek to impose their will on us, have to live with the sword. There is a very big difference here!

Unfortunately, there are far too many people in this world who, despite what must surely be an in-built knowledge of what is right and what is wrong, choose to impose their will on others. History shows that has always been how it is – and that is always how it will be. Whether on a global level, or on a personal level, the principle is the same.

As far as divine intervention is concerned, I do not believe that any of the world’s multiple Gods are going to come to our aid and protect us. It would be nice if this did happen, though.

We would not have to worry about wearing seat belts, locking our doors and gates or walking in dark alleys. We could eat, drink and smoke whatever we wanted. We could park our cars and have no fears that they would not be there when we came back. In short, we could simply rock on and not have to rely on other people and/or clever devices to protect and save us.

But, in a real world, we cannot just sit back and leave our safety and wellbeing to someone else – or something else. That is a cop-out. We have

to play our part and do whatever it takes to help God, whichever one we do (or do not) believe in, to help us. The trick here is to ensure that when helping ourselves we do not inadvertently become the bad guys.

Bin pickers leave little for recyclers The introduction of the new green lidded wheelie bins for recycled waste in the Bellville area was an excellent innovation. This has given all the local residents a chance to get involved in a useful project.

Unfortunately, there always seems to be a downside.

Where I live in La Rochelle we have our normal refuse removal service on Wednesday and our recycled material on Thursday. It is customary for residents to put their bins out first thing in the morning. This is soon followed by a stream of strangers who inspect the bins for useful material. Their preference seems to be bottles and similar saleable objects. I have no problem with these gentlemen collecting this material and disposing of it somewhere for remuneration.

After all we are all endeavouring to eke out a living. What I do feel strongly about is when they sit in the park to sort their saleable material and leave all their discarded mess behind for local residents to clean up. My biggest concern, however, is that if this practice escalates and there is little left in the recycle bins, it would no longer be profitable for the recycle company to continue this very necessary service.

The homeless problem in Bellville is now becoming chronic and if this matter is not seriously attended to we will soon be having more people living on the streets than in the houses.

Ons gesteelde goedere is gevind via ons iPad wat die sein van ons selfoon kon opspoor en die skade was minimaal. Die skuldige is in hegtenis geneem.

Die punt wat ek eintlik wil maak, is dat ons polisie by die Bellville-kantoor absoluut puik is.

Stores should let staff be at home I am disappointed to see how many shops are opening on Christmas Day and Boxing Day (a day traditionally meant for giving gifts to employees but instead, those employees are being made to work). Fruit and Veg in Pinehurst as an example. Whether you are Christian or not this is a day normally spent with family by the majority of South Africans, but now junior staff are being expected to work on these days while senior staff sit at home with their families. This shows no compassion for staff members and their personal lives. It is different if you work in essential services, but a supermarket has no need to be open.

What happened to the days when stores shut on Sundays?

Now shops must be open as often as possible for as long as possible, so the guys sitting at home with their families can make more money. Let your staff go home and spend it with their families.

Jaco Bouwer se bekroonde produksie Samsa-masjien, waarvoor die dramaturg Willem Anker ’n ATKV-Woordveertjie vir drama ontvang het, is van 16 tot 31 Januarie by die Baxter se Flipside-teater op die planke. Samsa-masjien, wat by verlede jaar se KKNK sy buiging gemaak het en toekennings gewen het, tree in gesprek met Franz Kafka se Die Verwandlung. Die toneelstuk vertel die storie van die insek-wording van Gregor Samsa sr. Samsa (Gerben Kamper) is in sy sewentigs, ’n afgetrede biologie-onderwyser, skoolhoof en ook klavierstemmer in sy jongdae. Maar Afrikaanse musiekliefhebbers moes vermoedelik al klaar van Jacques de Villiers gehoor het voordat hy in 2013 sy eerste album bekend gestel het.

Met die topprys vir jazz by die Tshwane Universiteit van Tegnologie, het Jacques eers met ander kunstenaars soos Jak de Priester en Bobby van Jaarsveld getoer voor hy besluit het om ’n solo-loopbaan aan te pak.

“Ek het basis my hele lewe lank geskryf en gesing,” sê Jacques. Hy voeg by dat enige musikant wat skryf graag sy of haar eie musiek vir die wêreld wil sing.

Dit was van kleinsaf sy droom om ’n soloalbum uit te bring, maar Jacques sê hy het nie gedink dat sy droom so vroeg waar sou word nie.

Regte tyd Jacques glo dat dinge maklik bymekaar kom as ’n mens iets op die regte tyd doen.

Dit was sy pa wat hom in 2012 aangemoedig het om sy eie album op te neem.

Jacques beskryf sy musiek as ’n mengsel tussen Coldplay, One Republic en Brooke Fraser se klanke.

“Die genre waarin dit val is stadium rock,” verduidelik hy.

Baie mense sê vir hom sy musiek is suksesvol, omdat hy iets nuut gedoen het.

“Daar is soveel plek vir groei in die Afrikaanse musiekbedryf,” sê hy.

Jacques sê dis belangrik dat kunstenaars besef dat hulle nie soos die ou voor hulle hoef te klink nie, en dat musiekaanhangers eintlik nuwe musiek waardeer.

Met twee Ghoema-toekennings en ’n Huisgenoot-Tempo-toekenning agter sy blad, weet hy beslis wat sy luisteraars wil hê.

Runners hit the Spur trail The Spur Cape Summer Trail Series gets going at Tygerberg Nature Reserve tonight (Wednesday).

The series is one of the most popular events on the South African trail running calendar, with each race in the countrywide series usually selling out. This year seems to be no different.

About 800 runners are expected to take on tonight’s challenging course, starting at sunset.

In order to cater for the growing number of runners, the Spur Trail Series™ will for the first time implement batching. In both the long and the short course, four batches will set off two minutes apart in order to alleviate congestion on route and make the experience more enjoyable to both the front runners as well as the back-enders.

A golf day in aid of the Yarden Children’s Enrichment Centre in Durbanville is due to take place on 12 February at the Bellville Golf Club.

The centre is set to open this month and the organisation is in desperate need of donations.

The idea for the centre came about when the parents of Pierre Cloete, who has a spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy impairment as well as epilepsy, struggled to find a school or daycare centre that would be able to accommodate him.

For the first eight years of his life, a full-time caregiver took care of him. After realising there is a need for such a school in the northern suburbs, Pierre’s parents decided to open one.

The Bergsig Dutch Reformed Church in Durbanville has made five Sunday school class rooms available to for the centre.

The second race in the series, which also starts at sunset, will take place at the Constantia Greenbelt on Wednesday 28 January, with the third race taking place at Lebanon Forest in the Elgin Valley on Sunday 1 February.

The Mountain XL race takes place at Silvermine Nature Reserve on Saturday 7 February, before the series concludes with the fourth race at Oak Valley in Elgin on Sunday 22 February.

Runners keep Peninsula’s oldest race alive The annual Jointeze Dan Luyt 15 km road race organized by the Bellville Athletic Club takes place on Wednesday 21 January.

It is the Peninsula’s oldest road race, the first one having taken place in 1951. Entry

fees are R55 for licensed runners and R75 for unlicensed runners. The first 1 000 entries will receive a goodie bag.

he two were momentarily suspended in the air.

Underneath them the inflatable power boat roared forward at 80km/h.

“Somewhere along the line there is always a close call,” states the pilot nonchalantly.

Neither of the two could afford to fall off the boat if their aspiration of finishing first overall in the Trans Agulhas Challenge was to be realised.

It was day five of the world’s toughest inflatable boat race and they were knee-deep in the long haul.

Pilot Stefan Lindeque, and co-pilot Tony Ingram hoped the 131km stretch from Gansbaai to Strand would be calm and uneventful, but they also knew that power boating beyond the waves was never really “calm and uneventful”.

Limits of endurance The two were thus not surprised when the waters became choppier than a lumberjack on steroids.

For 10km near Cape Hangklip their endurance was tested to the limits – this after they completed 188km on day one, 86km on day two, 161km on day three and 111km on day four.

“The stretch from Gansbaai to Strand is usually flat, but that day it was really challenging. The pounding water was extremely rough. After five days, 10km of pounding was the last thing we wanted,” says Table View’s Lindeque.

At that stage of the race they knew they stood a chance of not only winning their class, but also trumping the faster modified powerboat class – something that no-one

has ever achieved before.

But if one of them was thrown overboard then the bid for this remarkable achievement would have to wait till next year.

After a moment that seemed to last an eternity, Tony landed on the boat again.

A split second later the airborne Stefan also returned to the inflatable Nulandis.

That was close...

Home stretch Their backs were aching, their arms were numb, but they were not going to throw in the towel.

He adds that day three of the Trans Aghulhas near Witsand is mentally the toughest.

“There is nothing on the beach. It is 70 km of nothing really!”

For Stefan, however, Cape Hangklip was the pinnacle of perseverance.

Once the ocean settled down there, the final stretch of the race was a little more bearable.

Since every second counted and the two could not switch off even for a moment, time seemed to drag.

Their muscles and bones were shaken and shimmied into mash, but their determination and adrenalin ensured the final push proceeded without a hitch.

Suddenly it was all over.

They reached the shore and were crowned the overall winners with a time of nine hours and 51 minutes.

“We were in a different class, and the modified class, which is faster than ours, always win the overall.”

This victory will taste sweeter than any of their previous ones, of which there are many.

The 41-year-old Stefan has been World Champion on three occasions and has never

“Having grown up in Melkbosstrand, surfing was always a great love of mine. Then I saw these boats that can actually race inside the surf line and was drawn to it. I’m just basically looking for any excuse to get into the ocean.”

Hours in the gym to strengthen his core muscles, arms and back has paid off many times, and it is clear that Stefan is a long way from hanging up his power boating boots.

The friendly rivalry between him and northern suburbs’ Wimpie Ackermann, as well as his insatiable desire to master the waves, will keep him pushing the limits.
