á TygerBurger verlede week berig het oor swendelaars wat reageer op mense se aanlyn-advertensies en hulle dan probeer inloop, het mense van oraloor kontak gemaak om te sê dieselfde het met hulle gebeur. ’n Man van Silversands naby Kuilsrivier het sy motor op die OLXwebwerf geadverteer en het sommer gou ’n oproep van ’n voornemende koper ontvang. Toe hy die man gaan ontmoet, het nog ’n vrou haar by hulle aangesluit en ’n kamstige onwettige diamanttransaksie het plaasgevind. Omdat die man kop gehou het, het niks met hom gebeur nie, maar ander was nie so gelukkig nie. Renier Wolfaardt van Ken jy dié man? Kemptonpark sê hy sal nooit die nagmerrie-ondervinding vergeet nie. “Ek het my seun se motor op OLX geadverteer, omdat hy al sy goedjies wou verkoop want hy beplan om oorsee te gaan. Ek het ’n oproep gekry van ’n swart man wat redelik vlot Afrikaans praat. Hy het my sonder enige probleem weer gebel en my gesmeek om nie die motor aan iemand anders te verkoop nie. Hy sê toe vir my hy is ’n vragmotorbestuurder vir die De Beers-myngroep en het nie altyd die tyd nie. Hy wou weet of dit reg is as ons kan deurkom Vereeniging toe sodat hy ons kan betaal. Ons het

Terwyl hulle nog besig was om na die kontrak te kyk, het ’n ander man hom by hulle aangesluit en hulle begin toe “onderhandel” oor diamante. “Ná die onderhandelinge met die diamante misluk het, vra die ou of ons hom na ’n ander handelaar kan neem. “Ek sê toe ons wil nie betrokke raak nie en gee die man taxi-geld. Ná meer as ’n uur bel hy toe en gee verwysings na waar ons moet ontmoet. Ons ry toe in die rigting van die Sebokeng-township en hou by ’n huis stil. “Terwyl ons om die tafel sit, haal die man weer die diamante uit, maar ewe skielik kom daar vier ouens in wat sê hulle is van die polisie. Daar sit ons met diamante voor ons en besef toe ons is nou in groot moeilikheid. Ek het probeer verduidelik, maar hulle wou nie verstaan nie. Dis toe dat een ou my eenkant roep en vra wat ons gaan doen om die situasie te laat weggaan,” sê Wolfaardt. Volgens hom wou die mans hom en sy seun sielkundig afbreek. V Na bladsy 2.

Hy het egter kopgehou om ’n foto van die beweerde swendelaar te neem. Op ’n blog is daar tientalle mense wat kla oor die ouens. Sommige is al ontvoer en van hul motors beroof. Lt.kol. André Traut, provinsiale-polisiewoordvoerder, sê hierdie soort ding kom gereeld voor. “Die slenter is nie nuut nie en baie mense was al slagoffers hiervan. Soos die meeste slenters, maak die swendelaar gebruik van die mens se eie gulsigheid. Die slagoffers glo hulle kan ’n groot som geld maak. “Omdat handel in diamante onwettig is, gaan mense nooit na die polisie nie, omdat hulle dink hulle het deel aan die transaksie. Dis presies wat die swendelaar wil hê.”

Christo Brand van Ruyterwacht was een van oudpresident Nelson Mandela se tronkbewaarders op Robbeneiland en by die Pollsmoor-gevangenis. Hy het verlede jaar ’n boek die lig laat sien oor sy vriendskap met Mandela. Dié boek is in 16 lande en 10 tale versprei en in sommige lande is dit reeds 4 keer herdruk. In sekere dele van Amerika was die boek 4 weke lank die topverkoper. Maar terwyl mense in onder meer Amerika, Engeland en Duitsland hulle verwonder aan die storie, bly Brand rustig in sy huis in Ruyterwacht, regoor die Elsiesrivier-polisiekantoor. “Ek verwyl my vryetyd deur motors wat in ongelukke was, te restoureer en dan te verkoop. Dit is vir my lekker om met my hande te werk,” sê Brand, wat steeds op die eiland werk. Hy bestuur die winkels.

Volgehou Volgens hom wou hy nooit ’n boek skryf nie, maar Mandela het volgehou. “Elke keer as ek hom besoek het, het hy gevra wanneer ek dan die boek skryf. Hy het gevoel ek vertel ons storie oor en oor en ander mense maak geld daaruit. Daarna het hy verskeie mense na my gestuur om te help met die boek. Uiteindelik het dit ses jaar geneem vandat ek vir die eerste keer my notas bymekaar gemaak het. “Die druk van die boek moes ook uitgestel word toe Mandela siek word en weer toe hy sterf. Hy het darem die geleentheid gehad om die eerste drie hoofstukke te lees voor hy ge-

Ons is net vertel dit is baie gevaarlike misdadigers. “Die eerste ding wat my, as plaaskind, opgeval het was dat die ou manne op sulke dun matjies moes lê. Ek het sommige dae in my etensuur in ’n sel op van die matjies gaan lê en sal nooit vergeet hoe hard en koud dit was nie.” Mandela het volgens Brand nooit verander in die tyd wat hy hom geken het nie. “Hy was veronderstel om wit mense te haat, maar hy was lief vir hulle. Al was hy Nelson Mandela, het hy die vloer gewas as iemand hom gevra het om dit te doen.” Net om te illustreer hoeveel waarde Mandela aan mense geheg het, vertel Brand die staaltjie van ’n besoek deur hom en Ahmed Kathrada aan die destydse staatspresident. “Toe ons inkom, is hy nog nie in die vertrek nie en Kathrada sê ek moet nie op ’n sekere stoel sit nie, want dit is Mandela s’n. “Ek gaan sit toe maar op die rusbank. Ná ’n rukkie het Mandela ingestap gekom en gesê: ‘Meneer Brand, kom sit jy op dié stoel, want jy is vandag die belangrikste gas hier’. Dit was asof hy mense en situasies kon lees.” In al die jare wat hulle op die eiland was het Brand Madiba net twee keer kwaad ge-

sien en die een keer was dit oor ’n misverstand met sy Rapport, susterskoerant van TygerBurger. Hy was daardie tyd in isolasie, maar was toegelaat om in te teken op Die Burger en Rapport. Hy het die Sondag so bietjie gelees en gaan slaap. ’n Ander tronkbewaarder het sy koerant geleen en toe hy wakker word, kry hy nie sy koerant nie. “Dit het ’n geskarrel afgegee om die koerant op te spoor, maar ek moes later belowe ek sal vir hom ’n ander een bring. Só kwaad was Mandela dat hy die tronkbewaarder wou klap en ons moes net keer!”

Vriend Brand sê Mandela was sy vriend. “Ons het mekaar gereeld gesien ná sy vrylating en hy het my gesin ontmoet. Hy het selfs verwysings vir my oorlede seun geskryf toe hy werk soek.” Dan onthou Brand van die brief wat Mandela uit die tronk vir Brand se vrou gestuur het. “Hy was bekommerd oor ek nie verder studeer nie. Toe ek op die eiland kom, was Mandela reeds sestig, maar hy het vir almal omgegee. In die brief sê hy vir my vrou hy het al baie met my gepraat, maar ek luister nie. Eers ná sy vrylating het sy vir my die briefie gewys en ons het dit steeds.” Die brief is nie al wat Brand het van sy vriend nie. “Ek het nog sy tennisrakette en sy oefenfiets. Toe hy vrygelaat word, het hy gesê ek moet dit vir my kinders gee. Jy sal nie glo hoe fiks hy op daardie ouderdom was nie.” Brand wou aanvanklik ’n elektrisiën word, maar moes eers weermag toe gaan. Hy wou nie en het as alternatief by korrektiewe dienste begin werk. “Ek dink dit was bestem dat ek op Robbeneiland moes wees. My lewe kon so anders uitgedraai het, maar my ontmoeting met Mandela het dit in ’n hele nuwe rigting gestuur.”

ie man wat weier om te trek van die grond wat vir ’n ontwikkeling ter waarde van miljarde rande geoormerk is, gaan nie langer die uitbetaling van R40 miljoen aan eisers kniehalter nie. Brian Verwey is deel van ’n groep van 401 mense wat ’n suksesvolle eis vir ’n stuk grond naby Richwood ingedien het. Sy en ander families is deur die apartheidsregering van die grond afgesit en is na Atlantis verplaas. Hulle is nou die eienaars van die grond, maar gaan dit vir 99 jaar aan ’n ontwikkelaar verhuur, wat hulle lewenslank jaarliks vir dié voorreg gaan betaal. Elke eiser is geregtig om aanvanklik R100 000 te ontvang, maar weens Verwey se weiering om te trek is die proses vertraag. Nou gaan elke eiser teen die middel van Februarie hul geld kry, of Verwey nou bly of ry. “Hy hou nou nie meer die geld op nie, maar wel die ontwikkeling,” sê Gerald Beziek, ondervoorsitter van die komitee wat die eisers verteenwoordig. Volgens hom wil Verwey die sisteem manipuleer. “Toe die ander mense trek (hulle is na Wolwerivier verskuif) het hy daarop aangedring dat ons moet reël dat hy eerder na ’n Rasta-kamp naby Atlantis moes skuif. Hierdie mense is op ’n prioriteitslys vir huise en Verwey wil op so ’n manier ook ’n huis bekom. Weens die grondeis is hy nie meer ’n behoeftige nie en kan ook nie aanspraak maak op huise wat vir behoeftiges geoormerk is nie. Toe ons destyds verskuif is, het ons huise in Atlantis ontvang. Verwey is steeds die eienaar van ’n huis, maar sy kinders woon daar. As hy net sal verstaan dat hoe gouer hy trek, hoe gouer kan die ontwikkeling begin en kan ons almal voordeel daaruit trek. Nie een ontwikkelaar in die wêreld wil begin bou by ’n plek waar ie-

mand plak nie,” sê Beziek. Beziek sê dit blyk daar is ook ander redes hoekom Verwey nie wil trek nie. “Dit het onder ons aandag gekom dat hy onder meer dagga verkoop. Intussen vertel hy sappige stories aan die koerante en aan almal wat wil luister, maar hy sê nie hy is die een wat 400 ander mense frustreer nie. Van die eisers is al baie oud en ons wil darem hê hulle moet voordeel trek uit die eis voor hulle sterf. “In die verlede wou Verwey se broer, Allan Sullivan, ook nie trek nie, maar ná ons aan hom die saak verduidelik het, het hy getrek.” Beziek sê Verwey is welkom om enige tyd met hulle te kom gesels, want hulle is daar Brian Verwey, vir die eisers. “Ons wil hom nie weg hê omdat ons nie van hom hou nie, want hy is deel van ons. Dit gaan daaroor dat die ontwikkeling moet begin sodat ons almal voordeel daaruit kan trek. Wat vir ons belangrik is, is dat die mense van Richmondpark leiers en nie navolgers moet wees. Daardie mentaliteit van bakhand staan moet beëindig word.” Intussen het iemand wat ook in Richmondpark gewoon het, bevestig dat Verwey eiendom in Atlantis besit. “Hy en sy vrou het ’n huis in Atlantis waarin die kinders woon. Vir hom om daarop aan te dring om ’n huis te kry, is onregverdig,” sê die bron, wat anoniem wil bly. Hy het ook bevestig dat Verwey reeds vir jare dagga verkoop en ook al in die tronk was weens dwelmhandel.

City law cracks the whip on of drugs and illegal firearms, says JP Smith, the City’s mayco member for safety and security. “Most of the arrests and successes are as a result of tip-offs from the community and a good working relationship with the South African Police Service. “We have stepped up our operational capacity in the Manenberg area in recent weeks in response to a flare-up in gang violence and our efforts are paying off, as is evident from these arrests. I want to thank the community for doing their bit and providing crucial information that has resulted in a number of arrests. Only by working together will we be able to make a meaningful difference in tackling the gang and drug scourge that plagues so many of our communities – and to create a truly safe city,” Smith says.

The City of Cape Town law enforcement services cracked down on drug trafficking and lawlessness on the roads in a number of operations across the Metropole over the past weekend. Metro police officers arrested 85 suspects, including 65 drunk drivers, during roadblocks, operations and patrols in, amongst others, Parow, Goodwood and Table View. Motorists were arrested for drunk driving and reckless and negligent driving. Meanwhile, the City’s traffic service arrested 36 suspects and issued 1 169 fines for various offences during its different operations. Officers issued 415 fines for various other offences. The Metro police gang and drug task team has also been making inroads in the Manenberg area with various arrests for possessi-

Spider takes a long walk back to owner BRENDEN RUITER

around the corner I saw it as well and got hold of a piece of Tupperware and my fishnet. I reckoned the spider could be dangerous, but I realised it was no ordinary one so I caught it alive,” says Kock. He took the spider to the local animal shelter, but also got hold of the owner. What surprised Kock was that the spider walked so far. “I’m sure a person’s first instinct is to kill it, but I’m glad I didn’t. It would be interesting to know how far a spider can walk,” wonders Kock. After he posted pictures of it on Facebook someone recognised the spider as one belonging to a woman living three streets away from Kock. He reckons the spider walked at least a kilometer. “The owner of the spider says it has been missing for almost two months.” Norman Larsen, an arachnologist, says the spider is a Chilean Rose Tarantula. “It is a very harmless spider, but illegal to own one. The distance it covered is not uncommon. Spiders will walk and rest. I hoped they gave him water as soon as they found him because he would have been dehydrated after being exposed to the sun for that long,” says Larsen. Larsen educates people on spiders every Saturday between 11:00 and 12:00 at Cape Union Mart at Canal Walk. “I would like to educate people on spiders and they can come look at my ten tanks of spiders,” he says. looi het al fantastiese reise beleef: na die Rooi Planeet, na ’n eiland vol seerowers, ’n oerwoud, die Midde-Ooste... en dié week besoek hulle ’n plek in die hartjie van die woestyn, Doha, die hoofstad van Katar. Vlooi en die Sirkus se Engelse vertaling, Kipper and the Circus, word tans in ’n teater in dié stad opgevoer en volgens die Kaapse akteurs wat daarin speel is dit ’n absolute belewenis. Tien vertonings is geskeduleer en sowat 5 000 kinders sal dié week van nader kennis maak met Vlooi en kie. Dis die tweede jaar dat die produksiemaatskappy van Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck en Marinda Engelbrecht, Krazy Katz, genooi word om ’n Vlooi-avontuur op die planke te bring in Katar. Verlede jaar het hulle Kipper and the Rainbow daar opgevoer en dit was so ’n groot treffer dat hulle vanjaar teruggenooi is.

Uitnodiging Verlede jaar se uitnodiging het gekom nadat ’n Suid-Afrikaanse onderwyseres, wat by ’n private skool in Doha werk, die produksie gesien het en besluit het dat dit tyd is dat haar leerlinge die “regte” Vlooi (Kipper) ontmoet. Die Kipper-leesreeks van Oxford University Press is ook daar deel van die voorgeskryfde leeswerk. Die produksie word geborg deur ’n speelgoedvervaardiger in Doha, Mohamed Almalki. Van die geselskap wat tans daar optree, was ook verlede jaar daar. Volgens Marinda, ook die regisseur, is hulle verlede jaar soos koninklikes behandel. “Hulle het respek vir die werk,” vertel sy. Wat haar en die ander akteurs opgeval het, is die feit dat kinders wêreldwyd dieselfde is. “’n Kind bly ’n kind, maak nie saak in watter land hulle grootword nie.” Die kinders wat die produksies in Doha bywoon, is egter heelwat jonger as dié van Suid-Afrika.

“Hulle is almal so drie, vier jaar oud. Dit is baie meer uitdagend vir ons as akteurs om hulle aandag te behou,” vertel De Klerk Oelofse, wat die rol van Kipper vertolk. Nog opmerkings deur die akteurs oor verlede jaar se Doha-avontuur sluit in: “Dit was warm”, “Jy moet betaal om strand toe te gaan” en “Brandstof is goedkoper as water”. Maar kla sal hulle nie – alles word betaal – van salarisse tot verblyf en etes. Volgens Margit, wat reeds die afgelope 15 jaar die teks skryf vir die Vlooi-produksies, moes hulle sekere kultuurverskille in gedagte hou toe hulle begin voorberei het vir Vlooi se Doha-avontuur.

Makliker “Vanjaar s’n (die sirkus) was makliker, want dit het nie ’n sterk vroulike karakter nie. Verlede jaar (met Kipper and the Rainbow) moes ons ’n groot deel van die stuk oorskryf, omdat ’n vrou een van die sterk en nare karakters gespeel het. Dit is dáár nie aanvaarbaar nie. Daar mag ook geen fisieke kontak wees tussen die manlike en vroulike karakters nie. En die vrou se arms en bene moet bedek wees.” Margit is ook in Doha, maar dié keer nie agter die verhoog nie. Sy vertolk die rol van Kipper se ouma, wat ook later ontpop as ’n nar in die sirkus. Die ander akteurs is: Greta Pietersen (Biebie/Biff); Carel Nel (Ringmaster Mario); en Jason Barnard, wat in die regte lewe verbonde is aan die ZipZap-sirkus in Kaapstad. Vlooi keer in Augustus vir die 15de keer terug Kunstekaap toe met Vlooi in Egipte/ Kipper in Egypt. Van 11 tot 28 Augustus word twee vertonings daagliks aangebied om 09:30 en 11:00. Walk the Blaauwberg battle hill

The Friends of the Blaauwberg Conservation Area (BCA) invite you to join them on a new 6km “Blaauwberg Two Hills” walk, with an overview of the 1806 Battle of Blaauwberg on the hill afterwards. The walk will make its way to Kleinberg and then to the top of Blaauwberg Hill. You will be shown the route taken by the first and second British Brigades as they attacked the Batavian troops assembled by General Janssens to defend the Cape. Information on the Cape Flats Sand Plain Fynbos Restoration project and other developments in the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve will also be shared. The walk will start at 08:30 on Saturday 31 January and finish by 13:00. People will meet at 08:00 at the entrance to the Blaauwberg Reserve on the Eastern side of Blaauwberg Hill. The entrance is on the road to the Zonnekus Resort, Morningstar, just off the N7. Bring a hat, sunscreen lotion and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You are welcome to bring a picnic. Die Kaapse stadsraad het hom onlangs tot die gemeenskap gewend vir hulp om koperdiefstal hok te slaan. In ’n verklaring wat skokkende hoë koperdiefstalstatistiek aan die lig bring, sê Ernest Sonnenberg, die stad se burgemeesterskomitee-lid vir nutsdiense, al meer bronne word jaarliks aangewend om vir diefstal te vergoed, terwyl daar eintlik veel belangriker onderhoudswerk en verbetering is wat gedoen moet word. “Die waarde van gesteelde metaal het van R10 miljoen in 2013 tot R13,5 miljoen in 2014 gestyg,” sê hy. “Dit is geweldig frustrerend dat ons infrastruktuur so geteiken word. Metaaldiefstal veroorsaak gereeld onderbrekings in watertoevoer, wat eerlike, hardwerkende mense raak. Dit stuur ook geld weg van noodsaakli-

ke projekte en onderhoud.” Uit ’n verslag wat die departement saamgestel het, blyk dit dat die diefstal van veral dreindeksels dramaties toegeneem het. “Dit is nie net duur om te vervang nie, maar as dit nie gerapporteer word nie, kan dit ernstige blokkasies veroorsaak, omdat ongewenste materiaal in die gate kan val,” sê Sonnenberg. Hy vra dat die gemeenskap enige verdagte of onwettige aktiwiteite of inligting wat tot die inhegtenisname van oortreders kan lei, aan die metaaldiefstaleenheid rapporteer by 0800 222 771. Honesty is the best policy for a Matroosfontein family who found groceries in their car boot. The family, who did not want to be named, were shopping at the Shoprite centre in Parow on Sunday 18 January when they experienced the surprise. “When we opened the boot of our white Toyota Corolla we found some shopping bags with items in them already,” explained the mother of the family.

“We thought they belonged to another member of the family who used the car, but when we asked him he knew nothing about it. “We tried advertising it on radio, and put up notices at the centre, but to no avail. “When we arrived at the centre there was a similar car parked next to us so maybe they put the stuff in the wrong boot. “I would really love to get the items back to the rightful owner.” If you are missing shopping that just “disappeared” call 072 122 2942 with a description of the items you bought on the day.

Homeless tale warms hearts I was so touched by the wonderful deed Reese Harley did for Michael Ntehelang. (“Fallen Angels & Pawfriends, TygerBurger Brackenfell 14 January). Taking Michael off the streets and getting him a job looking after unwanted animals was so heart-warming. Gayl and Shireen Williams, I take my hat off to you two ladies for your empathetic hearts, providing enormous help to people and all kinds of animals! This reminded me of “bums” (street people) on the streets of Bourton-on-the-Water, London, England. May I suggest what the local police put into action: They took these people off the streets, gave each one a dog to care for, and they had to keep the dog healthy, as ordered by the Station Constable. The street people were required to report to the specific police station on a regular two week basis. Should the dog appear healthy, and the street person is “drug free” they will be assisted ( by vouchers) to stay at an official shelter with meals, and receive coupons to buy nutritious food for the dog from a volunteering pet shop . This gives the street people a new purpose in life, not just fending for themselves from drugs and trash, but caring for “man’s best friend”. This is what I call “Humanity” or in Xhosa “Ubuntu”. Beide organisasies kan nie aan ons verklaar hoekom dit gebeur nie en ons sal graag ’n verduidelikking van Sassa wil kry, aangesien dié bedrae tog ’n verskil aan ons lewens maak. Bring in the pros to help fix education As we start the 2015 school year, the 2014 academic results will be the main topic in school staff rooms. The inability to read, write and calculate properly are the main reasons usually given for poor academic performance. Reading, writing and mathematics are no doubt the foundation of adequate performance in school subjects. At government schools the lack of concentration, parental support and intellectual capacity and potential, as well as poverty, are often cited as the root causes of low marks. How do these schools, however, determine the extent and severity of these causes? What percentage of those labelled as struggling pupils have been formally assessed by relevant professionals to accurately identify this and to, more importantly, successfully and concretely assist such pupils? The education department has support teams consisting of social workers, psychologists and more in every district. How adequate are these teams – in terms of the number of staff available to assist struggling pupils in mainstream schools and the number of pupils they successfully assisted to improve their performance? How many psychologists, for example, are

available per number of pupils? Do these teams include speech therapists, occupational therapists and other remedial teaching experts like we find at private schools? Is this in proportion to the needs of our pupils and schools? When will we have remedial CDs and DVDs issued at school level, parental empowerment workshops, examination for possible visual problems, access to nutritional advice and supplements to improve pupils’ concentration, and home programmes to treat specific pupil visual-perceptual and other cognitive impairments like memory, readily and more freely available to our pupils? Ongelukslagoffer bedank helpers Ek was verlede jaar die slagoffer van ’n ongeluk toe ’n voertuig my op my fiets op die SpesBona-pad buite Durbanville getref het. Ek wil graag almal bedank wat bygedra het tot my ongelooflike herstel. Ek het in ’n uitsonderlike kort periode herstel weens die bydraes van soveel vriende, familie en mense uit die Durbanville-omgewing en -gemeenskap. Die personeel van die Mediclinic Durbanville en Intercare Tygervallei was ongelooflik. As dit ook nie was vir die vinnige optrede van Ernst Viljoen, wat na die ongeluk op my afgekom en dadelik hulp ontbied het, en dr. Niel van Tonder, wat hom na die toneel gehaas het en my gestabiliseer het, het ek moontlik nie eens die ongevalle-afdeling by die Mediclinic Durbanville gehaal nie. Ek moet ook Discovery uitsonder. Professor aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad en haar gesin ontvang berading ná hulle onlangs deur rowers in hul huis oorval is. Prof. Shanaaz Mathews en haar man, Shamiel, asook hul twee kinders, Raeesa en Zahraa, is vir sowat ’n halfuur aangehou terwyl die vier rowers besig was met hul plundertog. Volgens Shamiel het hulle pas van vakansie teruggekeer en het sy vrou die dag ’n klein operasie ondergaan. “My vrou was moeg en lomerig van die operasie en ek besluit toe om alleen na ’n fliek by die Cavendish Square-sentrum te gaan kyk. Met my aankoms by die sentrum het ek besef ek het die verkeerde vertoning bespreek en het maar weer huis toe gegaan. Toe ek by my straat indraai, sien ek die BMW en dit lyk vir my asof die insittendes na ’n huis soek.” Terwyl hy sy motor in die motorhuis intrek, het hy gesien sy hek gaan nie toe nie. “Ek wou nog gaan ondersoek instel, toe is daar vier gewapende mans rondom my. Hulle dring toe daarop aan dat ons in die

huis ingaan en sê as ek kalm bly, gaan niemand seerkry nie. Soos ons instap het ek na my vrou geroep en gesê sy moet uitkom en kalm bly. My een dogter het voor die televisie gesit en my ander een was in die kamer. “Ek sê toe vir die rowers my oudste dogter is nog binne, sodat hulle nie skrik as daar nog iemand is nie. Hulle vat haar toe om hulle in die huis rond te wys waar ons waardevolle besittings is. By my wou hulle weet waar my kluis is en of ek vuurwapens besit. Deurgaans was hulle kalm en het nie eens die moeite gedoen om hul gesigte te verberg nie,” sê ’n steeds geskokte Shamiel. Hy sê hoewel hulle ’n paniekknoppie het en sy vrou oorweeg het om dit te druk, is hy bly sy het nie. “Dinge kon maklik erger gewees het as die mans paniekbevange geraak het.” Die hele gedoente het geëindig toe een van die booswigte se selfoon begin lui het. Dit was hul makker in die wegkommotor. Lede van die buurtwag het hom gepla en hy het ongeduldig geraak. “Hulle het ons in ’n toilet toegesluit, vanwaar ons die bure deur die venster geroep het om ons te bevry.” Die rowers het met Shamiel se Mercedes en ’n verskeidenheid elektroniese toestelle op die vlug geslaan.

truth. The group started out as a church band, doing outreaches that just got bigger over time. And as their ministry evolved, so did the band and their goals. The band’s unusual name, which is pronounced as glow, was thought up by band member Pierre Schoeman’s wife. “It’s got to do with light and that we are the light of the world, which the scripture tells us.” They’re not sure why they dropped the “w”, but it happened to make the name work well in English and Afrikaans. Glo launched their debut-album, Sons of God, at Jamrock Theatre in Brackenfell last weekend.

In the heart “All of us kind of had it in our heart to record an album somewhere along the line,” explains Roedie Nortier, but it was only when their pastor suggested their material was good enough to record that they started seriously considering it. They experimented with recording at Church, but in the end their album was produced by Gideon Murray from Katalyst Studios. “One thing we have in common is that we’ve loved music since we were little,” William Loedolff says of his band members. They’ve also asked the Lord to use them since they were young. With this in mind, William points out that while a lot of Gospel music is beautiful, Glo ask: “Is it also beautiful to God?” “Many songs that people write misunderstand God’s love for people,” he says. He

says people sing about personal experiences, like being far from God, instead of what the Word says. “It’s not necessarily the truth.” This concept changed the band’s view on music, shifting their focus from melody to lyrics, which are written with the idea of listeners singing along.

Sing along “Having people sing along to a CD is much easier than getting them to sing in church,” says Elmi Nortier. The album has given them a way to get people to sing positive things about themselves in a fun way. “They don’t even realise it but they are putting their lives in order by singing with us.” The idea of singing the truth also led Glo to the realization there weren’t very many

songs they could use, so they had to write their own. This job mostly fell to William, who wrote most of the tracks on the album. The music has elements of rock and folk, but unpretentious and simple, making their uplifting lyrics easy to sing along to. Rather than being known as just a band, Glo is a movement. Together with Pastor Lood Spies, the group run a ministry called Mach C. They want to help worshippers and songwriters do what they do. While the album is English, the band is also busy sampling an Afrikaans single, Dit is Gedoen, to stations across the country. he Goodwood Harriers Running Club which joined forces with the Tygerberg Athletic Club back in 1985 is no more. Faffa de Jager has decided it’s time for the Harriers to run solo again. The club officially opened its doors again on 12 January. “The club was originally established in

1980 and now the Goodwood community feel they want a running club and to revitalise the Goodwood Harriers. “Way back then the Tygerberg Athletic Club was just for track and field athletes and the Goodwood Harriers was for long distance runners, so they amalgamated to have the best of both worlds, because the Harriers in those days had some athletes that wanted to participate in both disciplines,” said De

Jager, who fills the role of club captain. The wheels are also set into motion to visit the local high schools and promote road running, because they are the future of the club. We will also be using the facilities of the Goodwood Sports Club where our members can have Sunday lunches in the comfort of the club and just have a good time and make new friends,” explained De Jager. Jan Mostert (16) van die Hoërskool Brackenfell, Chris-Mari Schreuder (14) van die Hoërskool Bellville, Corne Coetzee (18) van Paul Roos Gimnasium en Luane Groeneveld (16) van die Hoërskool Stellenbosch is die skuts wat teen die beste in die wêreld gaan meeding. Die juniors, wat hul voorbereiding onder die wakende oog van Casper du Plessis doen, is slaggereed vir die uitdaging wat op hulle wag.

Lang stryd “Dit was ’n lang en opdraende stryd om sover te kom, maar ek is besonders trots op hulle. Om te kwalifiseer moes hulle die Olimpiese kwalifiserende punt skiet en dit is nie ’n geringe taak nie. Met baie kompetisies agter die rug en drie stelle proewe wat oor die land heen geskiet is, was hulle dan ook die enigste vier wat die kwalifiserende

punt kon behaal,” sê Du Plessis. Du Plessis het in 2000 begin met geweerafrigting en vir die laaste sewe jaar gee hy ook pistoolafrigting. Daarbenewens sal dit die vierde keer wees dat hy ’n span as bestuurder of afrigter oorsee vergesel – iets wat verseker in die span se guns tel. Volgens Du Plessis is Suid-Afrika redelik kompeterend met pistoolskiet, maar sit wel met bietjie van ’n agterstand aangesien sekere lande se skuts reeds van ’n jong ouderdom professioneel skiet.

Teenstanders “Daar het reeds 35 lande ingeskryf vir die kompetisie, waarvan ons moeilikste teenstanders Korea en Duitsland sal wees. Ek voel tog sterk daaroor dat al vier skuts oor die talent beskik om medaljes te verower.” Die harde werk is basies agter die rug. Die skuts spandeer ongeveer ses tot agt ure per week op die baan waar daar geskiet en afgerig word. Daar word ook van hulle verwag om ’n verdere sewe ure droëvuur op hulle eie te oefen.
