ie werksaamhede gaan soos altyd voort by die Bellville-polisiekantoor nadat dié kantoor se hoof, brig. Kol. William Smith, wat in haar plek waarneem hangende ’n beslissing oor haar en drie ander polisiehoës se skorsing, sê die “operasionele uitvoering van polisiëring gaan onverstoord voort”. Govender, haar man, brig. Colin Govender, brig. V Na bladsy 2.

Hawelose glo verantwoordelik vir inbraak BRENDEN RUITER

@ruitervaniewind

@ruitervaniewind

onwettig landuit gestuur. Ao. “Wanneer jy by ’n winkelsentrum parkeer, maak eers seker jou motor se deure is gesluit voor jy aanstap.”

Amongst the spirited convoy of Harley riders who participated in the K.I.D.S Blanket Run were (front, from left) Allan Smith (assistant director of the HOG Tyger Valley), Jacqueline van Greunen (GrandWest entertainment coordinator) and John Windell (secretary of the HOG Tyger Valley). At the back (from left) are Annalize Taljaard (treasurer of the HOG Tyger Valley), Gavin Taylor (GrandWest entertainment manager) and Tom Hartmann (director of HOG Tyger Valley).

Harley riders show ‘soft side’ Hundreds of Harley Davidson riders participated in the second annual K.I.D.S Blanket Run from GrandWest on Sunday (19 April) to raise funds and collect blankets for underprivileged children. This year the blankets and donations collected from the K.I.D.S Blanket Run will be donated by Rotary Blouberg to local children’s charities including The Homestead, TLC Projects, Ons Plek and Zusakhe House amongst others. The mass ride, organised by the Harley

Owners Group (HOG) Tyger Valley, Chapter South Africa, saw the bikers ride in convoy to Milnerton High School where they gathered for an afternoon of fun and activity. The K.I.D.S Blanket Run has become a tradition in the local Harley community, growing to become a community initiative which has at its heart the wellbeing of underprivileged children. A warm blanket to snuggle under is a great source of comfort to a young person during the cold winter months.

Luidens die hofstukke het Lamoer by be-

drae van sowat R75 000 van Dawjee gebaat. Genl.

Polisiehuis stukstuk weggedra BRENDEN RUITER

@ruitervaniewind

Lt. kol. have been culpable homicide, which carries a prison sentence. I personally would have stood witness against the driver,” he said. In the second incident, he witnessed a car without any lights on skip all the traffic lights in Vryburger Avenue. City traffic services spokesperson Maxine Jordaan said there hasn’t been and increase in road accidents during load shedding. “Road users have been really compliant and we are really grateful for that. I think because the load shedding is scheduled, people can prepare their driving times in advance,” says Jordaan. She urged drivers to always treat intersections as four-way stops as “a general rule” and not only during load shedding.

Load shedding is endangering the lives of residents in Bothasig as roads become dangerous when traffic lights stop working. Community Policing Forum chairperson Neal de Witt said after constantly hearing complaints about how badly people were driving during blackouts, he decided to go see for himself. “I went out for two nights to witness it for myself. I must say how disgusted I am with those residents who blatantly disregard the traffic rules and common road courtesy. When a traffic light or lights are out it becomes a four-way stop, not a four-way gofor-it,” says De Witt.

He urged residents to reduce speed when they approach an intersection. “When load shedding is in place, people should reduce their speed. They must stop at an intersection too. I know that when approaching an intersection and you don’t see the lights of another vehicle coming towards you, you presume it is safe.” De Witt said he saw how dangerous that presumption can be. “In the first incident a speeding motorist drove through an intersection where the traffic lights did not work due to load shedding. He did not see any lights coming from the other direction and he drove on. There was a pedestrian who was crossing the road and luckily for him it was a near miss. If he hit and killed the pedestrian, it would

Butlers spread their musical legacy GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

A

local entertainment family has initiated a project to empower a new generation on the Cape Flats. Jonathan Butler is well-known on the international jazz scene, but when you hear Jonathan performing with some of the best in the business, it is easy to understand his talent was fostered by multi-talented siblings, some of whom are still plying their trade on the local entertainment scene. Now, they are about to share that knowledge with a new generation. This family legacy has its roots in Seventh Avenue in Belgravia where Jonathan was the youngest of 17 children. His siblings Sandra, Vicky, Veronica and Danny became household names on the cabaret circuit in the 1970s and 1980s. Musicians such as Ponties, Paul, Ian, Tony and Gregory are still revered by the older generation and a new generation has started making inroads on the music scene – now it’s about to grow. Michael-John Sias, Sandra’s son, is leading the sharing of that legacy through starting Butler Youth Development based in Belhar. “The time has come for us to make the people aware of this family, the rich history in music, and empower them through this musical development programme by making them aware of their talents,” he said. “Through music we can keep them off the streets and away from so many negative influences around them.”

Sandra Miller (Butler) and her son MichaelJohn Sias are spreading the Butler family’s musical legacy. PHOTOS: GARY VAN DYK Michael-John said the project will also run as a group associated with the Cape District Minstrel Association. “Our family roots are with the minstrels because it all stemmed from my grandfather

Abraham ‘Oupa Kool’ Butler and his wife, Elizabeth.“He had a group in those days where all the children got their start in the music business. The time has come for the family to get back to those roots.”

Sandra, now Miller, was excited about the initiative and said her son had been nagging her to get something started. “The two of us share a love for music, especially the minstrel tra- Danny Butler, also a dition, and we at- drummer, is one of the tend all the com- talented siblings that can petitions every still belt it out with the year,” she said. best of them. “He understood the legacy of the family and always said we must start something to preserve that legacy because some of the family have already passed on. With this project we want to show the children that hard work will get you success in life and music is one of the tools we want to use.” Michael-John also pointed out they have some challenges and are looking for businesses to partner with them in this new initiative.“We’re working very hard to raise some money but we need people to come on board and help us. “My uncle, Jonathan, was in town during the festive season. He saw what we are doing and is very supportive. If we can grow I am sure there are others who can obtain the same success.” V For more information about the project contact MichaelJohn on 083 669 7623.

Lizz Meiring se regie is so vrolik soos haar polkadot-spanbroek en -hemp. Kaartjies vir Liewe Heksie: Flower Power is beskikbaar by Computicket.

Elsies canal gets cleaned up Staff from GrandWest Casino and learners from De Waveren Primary School recently cleaned up the Elsies River canal during National Water Week. They were joined by councillors from the different wards, GrandWest concessionaires, the Metropolitan Community Forum, and City of Cape Town staff. The event, which highlighted the importance of conserving fresh water resources and promoting environmental sustainability, included educational talks by guest speakers as well as activities with “Manzi”, the City of Cape Town’s water mascot, to convey serious water-saving messages in a fun way. GrandWest’s Grannies Green Nursery, City Parks, and the Invasive Species Unit also hosted interactive learning sessions on water saving plants, and fynbos.

“Water is a scarce and precious resource which must be used mindfully. We all have to make an effort to preserve the environment so there is enough water and food to sustain the population. Water Week serves to highlight the obligation everyone has to save water and protect natural resources. GrandWest appreciates the efforts of everyone who participated in our water awareness event,” says Bongeka Ndikinda, environmental officer at GrandWest.

Learners from De Waveren Primary School were amongst the team of 146 greenconscious people who spent a day cleaning up the Elsies River canal to mark Water Week 2015. At the event, hosted by GrandWest, are from left Raees Van Niekerk, Max Dingaan, Jesse Lukas, Reece Maloy, and Chadlyn Arends.

Operations Centre staff strike over move BRENDEN RUITER

The consolidation of the City’s Technical Operations Centre (TOC) will uproot families. So says Lennox Bonile, regional chairperson of the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu). Bonile spoke after TOC workers staged strike action on Friday to highlight their grievances. The TOC is moving from Hardekraaltjie in Bellville to the city centre. “Members were not informed in good time. Some people design their lives around where they live, so moving the place of work will also have an impact on their lives,”

says Bonile. The City disputed Bonile’s claims. “The staff disruption has occurred as a result of the City’s efforts to consolidate the City’s Corporate Call Centre and Water TOC Call Centre. The objective of this merge is to streamline residents’ communications with the City into one single access point,” as statement read. “The City has engaged with employees about the merger for some months but some have, for a variety of reasons, demonstrated their resistance on the basis that they were not properly consulted and engaged on the transition. The City refutes these claims.

Kaartjies is teen R45 by Compu ticket of by www.yta.org.za beskikbaar.

Iris House moves into permanent new premises They have finally moved into their new premises lock, stock and children. “They” refers to the staff of Iris House, a home for terminally ill children who were granted a “very run down property” by the department of public works on the Stikland grounds in December last year. The hospice, which used to be a mobile service, will now operate from these premises after extensive renovations were completed, having officially opened their doors last week. There will be week day respite care sessions held at the centre for children not attending school or receiving adequate care while their parents are working, said Sue van der Linde, the driving force behind Iris House. “There is also a Saturday session for working moms and dads to allow them some ‘time off’,” Sue said. “Emergency and planned overnight care will be provided to parents who find themselves exhausted and not able to cope,” she said, adding that short stay holiday care was also set up to give parents a complete break.

This would ensure parents had time to focus on their other children and their own relationship, Sue said. “The end of life care service will be provided in a family room where Mom and Dad can spend the last precious days of their child’s life together with their child in a loving and caring environment,” she said. Iris House Children’s Hospice was originally started with Sue and her husband Ferdi providing the running costs, but the fundraising team has since raised over R2.5 million through corporate donations, online platforms, an e-shop and events. The Western Cape department of social development has also increased their initial funding of R220 000 in 2012 to R540 000 in 2013, to R1 million in 2014. This provides 41% of the charity’s running costs, Sue said. “A business plan has been submitted for approval for the 2015 to 2016 funding period. Sue said they were in talks with the department of health and “Iris House is extremely optimistic they will receive support” V Visit www.irishouse.org for more information or support, or SMS “IRIS” to 40131 to donate R20.

The Friends of Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) Stellenbosch will be hosting a 6 km trail run at the Tygerberg Nature Reserve on 25 April. The society was formed by medical students at Stellenbosch University to support the work done by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). “As the Friends of MSF we aim to raise awareness and funds for the organisation,”

said organisor Megan van Grensen. Registration starts at 07:00 on the day in the parking area, and the fun run at 09:00. Tickets cost R50 per person and will be on sale at the reserve’s shop on the day. Participants are encouraged to bring their own water, but snacks and other beverages will be supplied by the Seattle Coffee Company and Huis Francie van Zijl Residence. Limited parking is available.

No ‘top’ cop left – we all share blame What message are we sending our children when the top cop in the province faces suspension after charges of corruption are levelled at him? Western Cape police commissioner Arno Lamoer and three senior officers appeared in court and are facing suspecsion on 109 counts including corruption, money laundering and racketeering, with a Cape businessman. These are officers who, filling the highest policing position in the province, should be beyond reproach – to the extent that a parking ticket could not be held to their names. Yet daily we are faced with stories about police officers flouting the law. The very men and women who are meant to protect us, are committing crimes and endangering others. Where are the days when becoming a police officer was an honour, a calling for only the bravest and most trustworthy? Perhaps it has seeped in from our society, where breaking the law is so widespread it has become the norm. How often do we think nothing of jaywalking, driving after drinking or keeping money found on the street? We turn a blind eye to drug dealing and gangsterism, quick to pull our curtains closed or avert our faces. We should not only hold our police officers accountable, reporting their failures to uphold the law, but also our community members, friends and family. The fight against corruption is the responsibility of each and every one of us.

Animals bring joy to children I read with interest Zelda’s letter, “Diere in sirkusse word misbruik”, TygerBurger 15 April. I recall some letters last year and remember a group of protesters with placards calling for closure of the circus which is again on tour. I agree with some of your remarks but not all. You have your right to say what you feel. I would like to ask if you feel the same way, and would write to all media here and in South Africa to put a stop to some of the following places of amusement. The Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront. Think of all the sealife in their glass “tronke” and that magnificent shark swimming round and round in its “tronk” getting fed what it’s given. The ocean where it should be is possibly 100 metres away. Then we can go to Hout Bay to the World of Birds and see all those animals in their “tronke”. They have Black eagles and others there “permanent in draadhokke” who can see the blue sky and mountains close by but cannot soar to hunt and catch their own prey. Monkey World Somerset West, the lion park and so we can go on, even to a well known nursery who keep a few animals in a cooped up space. Perhaps for “selfsugtige finansiële genot” as you say. However, many people can take their children and grandchildren to see the animals for a day of fun. Go and see the smiles and happiness it brings to the children. Also, they create employment. I personally, and I’m sure there are many others, would like to urge Maclarens circus and others I’ve mentioned, to keep up the good they do and the pleasure they bring to many who are not able to go to the Kruger and Etosha Parks. And on a sad note Zelda, we humans are all living in our own “tronke” en “draadhokke”

because of die “wreedheid teenoor die mens” and “die kwaliteit van ons mense se lewe is daar geen vryheid nie” etc. . Don’t try to take everything away from children who live in a crime-ridden country. The circus will soon be gone and I hope to see them next year again. Let parents decide what they would like their children to see. I respect your views and understand what you’re saying and hope that you will do likewise. Best wishes. BRIAN WOOD Email

Geyser flow caused high water bill Re: “Flood of questions over water usage”, TygerBurger, 15 April. I had a similar problem and it was finally discovered that the geyser overflow pipe was pouring directly into a drain which was not easily visible. A plumber sorted out the geyser and solved the problem and rerouted the overflow pipe, but I had to pay for the water wasted. INGRID HANSEN Email

Water meters can record wrong reading With regards to your article titled “Flood of queries over water usage”, TygerBurger, 15 April, I would like to inform you that I am disputing a water bill of over R7000. I disagree with the statement that a water meter cannot jump and an intermittent fault would be ‘easy’ to identify. If a foreign object in the water lodges in the counter mechanism, when it dislodges, the mechanism suddenly rotates at high speed and can skip a gear tooth without leaving any evidence because the gear teeth are plastic and the foreign object washes away. Testing the

meter is futile because the meter is not faulty, the water is. I have spoken to numerous people who have experienced the same problem, so I disagree with the ward representative who claims that this was a unique case. FRANK CIMAN Table View

Water meter concerns trickle in In response to the article “Flood of questions over water usage”, TygerBurger Bellville, 15 April, about high water bills and councillor Brendan van der Merwe’s claim that he received no other complaint, I would like to let you know that my waterbill jumped about 100% recently. I live in Vierlanden. IFTAH ZIV Durbanville

WILMA UYS Epos

In the incident last Tuesday morning in which the house of Dr Mariana de Jager in Durbanville burnt down, it was speculated that the power surge created when the electricity flow was restored after load shedding, caused an electrical fault. An independent assessor for CIA, Mike Hill of Mike Hill & Associates, was first on the scene at the gutted house last Wednesday morning. He said there is a good change the electrical surge after load shedding had affected some electrical equipment. “It may have well been the geyser, hi-fi or television. It looks as if the fire started further away from the spare room where Mariana slept,” he said. Van der Merwe said the outcome of the forensic investigation is not yet known. Fanus Coetzee, head of Santam’s claims assessment services, said at Santam the number of load shedding claims is not high compared to the overall number of claims they receive in general. They have received several claims related to load shedding – eight claims in February, 122 in March and 67 in April.

“These claims were primarily related to house contents, such as damage to electrical appliances and the deterioration of refrigerator contents,” he said. “We have received reports of power surges due to load shedding, but not a specific case such as the abovementioned example (in which a house burnt down). “In the instance where a fire is caused by an electrical fault due to load shedding, Santam will cover the insured under the house owners for building and household contents section of their personal policies,” he said. Coetzee advised people to try minimise damage and loss during load shedding using the following tips: . Alarm batteries: Most batteries will last at least six hours, but they should be tested regularly to ensure they are functioning properly; . Electric fencing: An electric fence should have a back-up battery, which needs to be tested regularly and replaced if needed; . Arriving or leaving home: Home owners should be alert when arriving or leaving home when street lighting and outside lighting is not functioning; . Automated gates and garage doors: Home owners should ensure they have alternative ways to enter and exit their home if electric security gates and garage doors are not functioning due to load shedding; . Contact your security company: If consumers feel unsafe at any time during a power failure, they should contact their security company emergency number.

Why some remain in light L

oad shedding is a hot topic at the moment. Cape Town’s mayco member for utility services, Ernest Sonnenberg, recently told Fin24 why some areas never experience load shedding, while others appear to receive an inordinate amount. “As far as exclusions from load shedding is concerned, the city is guided by regulation NRS048-9,” Sonnenberg said. “This deals with the appropriate treatment of critical loads and the essential load requirements of various customers.” Fin24 reports areas exempt from load shedding, as identified by the NRS048-9, are measured by a number of criteria. These include: the safety of people, the environment, the potential

damage to plants associated with a critical national product (for example wastewater treatment works), and technical constraints on executing load shedding and curtailment or restoration. “Based on these criteria and where possible, the City excludes major hospitals, and major central business districts and areas where there are major crowds gathered for specific events,” Sonnenberg said. “Areas previously excluded are the Table Mountain cable car, as well as parts of the CBDs across the city, and major hospitals,” Sonnenberg said. He said some residents and businesses may be excluded from load shedding if their properties share a dedicated circuit with exclusion areas.

Eskom shed some light on why some people’s lights do not come back on after the scheduled load has been shed. Spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe told Fin24 that some municipalities used automated technology to manage the process, while others use manual switches. “If the technician is stuck in traffic and needs to get to the switchboard, perhaps there might be a delay,” he said, using a hypothetical example. Sonnenberg said “nuisance tripping” sometimes led to load shedding lasting longer than it should as the restoration of power sometimes results in circuits tripping, which often went unreported as it was assumed the outage was due to load shedding,” he told Fin24.

Innovators called to pitch ideas LaunchLab, a business accelerator hub based at Stellenbosch University, is running its bi-annual Pitching Den for innovative entrepreneurs. The contest is open to aspiring entrepreneurs and is a platform to pitch business ideas and stand a chance to win a share of the R50 000 prize money. Participants enter their business idea by recording an informal pitch on video. Although any business idea can be pitched, LaunchLab is putting out a challenge for ideas in one or more of their new focus areas: payments and big data, paid media, clean technology, agricultural techno-

logy, and education technology. Participating campuses include Stellenbosch University (SU), the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the University of Cape Town (UCT). “LaunchLab’s Pitching Den is a great platform for aspiring and emerging entrepreneurs to test the viability of their business ideas and gain access to a valuable entrepreneurial network,” said LaunchLab CEO Philip Marais. Winning ideas will receive seed funding and incubation support services like mentorship and space. The Pitching Den at SU, UWC and UCT is an effort to promote entre-

preneurship among their students. Pitching began at UWC and UCT on 14 to 16 April and at SU on 21 to 23 April. The final judging will be hosted at the Nedbank LaunchLab in Stellenbosch on 6 May and experienced entrepreneurs, academics and local investor representatives have been selected as judges to determine the winning ideas. The public is invited to attend the final pitching event on 6 May. Super Mamas wil vroue bemagtig DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

S

“Hy het my in die huis toegesluit, my Bybel in stukkies geskeur en my familie eenkant toe geskuif. Hy was ernstig.

As Eskom struggles to cope with electricity demand, computer equipment is at risk of being damaged. “PCs are sensitive to power cuts, power dips and power surges, so take the necessary steps to protect them,” says Daryl Blundell, general manager at Sage Pastel Accounting. When power is cut, you could lose the latest changes to files, and any open files may be corrupted. As a result, Blundell has offered five tips to protect your computer equipment during load shedding.

Regular backups Keep your latest data backed up so that you do not lose hours of work or important information. Regular data backups are a must, not only because of load shedding, they can also be a lifesaver if your hard drive crashes or your computers are stolen. If possible, invest in an offsite backup system. Data backups are kept safe on secure servers and can be accessed wherever you have an Internet connection. Invest in Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) In the event of a power failure or load shedding, a UPS gives users time to exit applications they are working on and save their work before safely shutting down the PC.

Even if you have generators, they’ll take a few seconds to kick in after a power failure – a UPS will prevent them from losing power before you’ve saved your work. A backup power inverter system is another option. For less than R10 000 you can find one that will keep your routers, a couple of computers and some lights going for a few hours.

Switch off all PC’s not performing critical functions Any data open on a PC is at risk of being corrupted in the event of a power failure. Thus you need to get into the habit of closing applications and shutting down desktop computers when not in use for a while. Switch off and unplug To reduce the risk of damage to hardware, switch off your PCs and unplug them from the main power source when power cuts hit. Otherwise, power surges when electricity is restored could damage your hardware. Consider investing in a power bank A power bank can be invaluable for managing your business when there is load shedding. These portable chargers let you top up the battery of your USB-powered mobile devices so you can keep going when there is a long power outage. – Fin24

W

ith a new drummer and new album on the way, local audiences will get a taste of The Black Cat Bones’ new sound when the band head to Cape Town this week. After being named South Africa’s best live act at the MK Awards in 2013, the Pretoria band have become a favourite on stages across the country. The “dirty blues-rock” act will be on stage at the Big Blues meets Rock Festival at Hillcrest Quarry this Sunday after announcing a line-up change last month. Originally from Table View, Jason Oosthuizen, who replaces Jason Hinch, is already well-known to Cape Town rock fans as the drummer for Van Coke Kartel. After leaving the band in 2013, Jason headed to Los Angeles where he toured with local Hollywood bands. He returned home a few months ago for a short Cape Town tour with his project: Jason and The Jammers. His new act took him to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Kenya. “Now I’m back here playing for The Black Cat Bones and it’s been a blast so far,” he says.

Bonham influence The Bones’ guitarist Andre Kriel says it’s still too early to say how Jason will influence the band’s sound, but he’s confident that he’ll “bring the goods and then some”. “His Bonham influence plays right into our hands and his attitude spells a lot of trouble, just the way we like it,” he adds. The Bones are also excited about the new album they’re compiling. While their fourth release doesn’t have a name yet, they are planning to release the first single within the next two months. “This album is without doubt going to tell the story of who we are, where we come from and where we’re heading to,” Andre says. He says the album is intended to take listeners back to the band’s roots but also expose them to the modern updated version of

their sound. “One thing you’ll never be able to accuse us of is being stuck in the past.” While The Black Cat Bones like to honour their traditional blues and folk heritage, they are also “very aware of the beast that lingers inside, waiting to pounce, poised to strike”.

Reunion of genres The fusion of blues and rock they create makes The Black Cat Bones a perfect choice for the Big Blues meets Rock Festival on Sunday 26 April. They’ll be sharing the stage with Van Coke Kartel, Pebbleman with Jesse Jordan, The Albert Frost Trio, Gerald Clark and the Deadmen, Boulevard Blues and the Mojo Heads, Azurdee and the Blue River Band, and Hatchetman for this 10-hour concert. “The timing for this is perfect,” Andre says. He says it’s clear that organiser Richard Pryor (of Pebbleman and Boulevard Blues) has put a lot of thought into the festival. “The hype around it has reached as far as Johannesburg and given the fact that blues and rock music are so closely related, we predict this turnout to be a sort of family reunion between genres.” Before the festival, Andre and frontman Kobus de Kock will be doing a “deboned” or acoustic show with local percussionist Len Miskin at Sgt Pepper in Long Street from 20:00 on Friday 24 April. Tickets for this show cost R40 and can be booked on 021 424 5608. On Saturday 25 April the band will be performing a free show at Bertie’s Mooring in Gordon’s Bay. Tickets for the Big Blues meets Rock Festival on Sunday cost R150 and are available at Computicket. Gates open at 12:00 and the next day is a public holiday. WIN! WIN! WIN!

Karting classes clash at Killarney ADRIAN PHEIFFER

T

he South African Karting Championship heads to Killarney on Saturday for the first of three blockbuster meetings that include all national karting classes. Action should be fraught on the circuit as the Rotax Max classes embark on national championship openers, while the Vortex Rok and IAME X30 classes move into their second rounds. It’s an important race for Rotax Max as its classes switch to new Evo specification engines, but it will be interesting whether the karts will be faster considering recent resurfacing at the Killarney kart track. Faster or not, Rotax Max officially enters a new era with its improved and more driver friendly power plants, and you can expect action of the highest order as leading competitors from the Cape, Gauteng, Eastern Province and Kwazulu Natal gather for their first national showdown of the year. The high school age Junior Max 125s are bound to offer among the biggest routs of the day as local stars Delano Fowler (Suprocom Tony), Dino Stermin (RKT Designer Trims Kosmic), Giordano Lupini (AutoWeek CRG), Sebastian Boyd (Boyd Freight Kosmic) and Jason Coetzee (Kosmic), among other Cape stars, defend local honour against upcountry rivals. Stiff opposition is sure to come from Jo-

JP Hamman will compete in the Vortex Rok class on Saturday at the South African Karting Championship at Killarney. PHOTO: DAVE COLINS hannesburg rivals such as Birel trio Delon Thompson (A&L), Cameron O’Connor and Joshua Diaz; and KZN lads Daniel Duminy (Birel) and Dominic Lincoln (Tony). Any of those ten, or any one of several dark horses can win on Saturday. Moving a step up to the 125cc Senior Max mob, Cape ace Jonathan Aberdein (Tony) will want to continue his domi-

nance from the recent Killarney regional but Fabienne Lanz (Formula K) will be doing everything in her power to prevent her dad’s former race rival’s son from taking home glory. They’ll also have to deal with Cape crew Eugene Denyssen (SAKRA Tony), Suprocom Tony siblings Delano and Isabelle Fowler, Henry Bam (SAKRA Kosmic), Chadley Swartz (SAKRA

Kosmic), and Jozi drivers Shannon Jackson (CRG) and Robert Whiting (Tony). Another spectacular fight will be the two-speed gearbox Rotax DD2s, where local heroes Jonathan Aberdein (Tony), Umpie Swart (Indy Oil Birel) and Jonathan Thomas (Partners Hair CRG) will face Gauteng gang, CRG drivers Eugene Brittz and Chad MacIver, Bradley Liebenberg (Birel) and Intrepid-mounted Natalians Luca Canderle and Chad MacIver for glory on a star studded grid. SA’s four-time world champion Cristiano Morgado (CRG) will be the man to beat in the DD2 Masters national challenge class, with Nick and Jennifer Verheul among those out to stop him. If you think DD2 is going to be a race to remember, be prepared for a primary school kart war in the 60cc Maxterinos where upcountry hopefuls will be out to upturn dominant local honour. Aidan Strydom (Turbo Tech Topkart) Charl Visser (Battery Energy Kosmic), Joseph Oelz (Clear/GoPro CRG), Tate Bishop (TPB Kosmic), Tyler Croy (Zanardi) and Troy Dolinschek (Makita TopKart) are the kids to beat on home turf, but sadly for them, that won’t deter Gauteng visitors Kwanda Mokoena (SD Topkart), Josh de Paiva, Tyron Donker (Mini-Maxi Topkart) and Cameron O’Connor (Birel), as well as KZN kids Tristan Losch (Flandria) and Liam de Beer (CRG) from trying to loosen Cape Town’ grip on the class.

Run goes around the world Thousands of runners will gather at up to forty destinations on six continents to take part in the second Wings for Life World Run on 3 May, with Cape Town one of the destinations. The run starts at exactly the same time across the world, with a catcher car setting off thirty minutes after the start at each location, with the aim being to outrun the catcher car. As long as you stay in front of the catcher car, you’re still in the race. The minute the catcher car passes you, however, your race is over. This continues until a single man and woman are left running. Whoever or wherever they are, they will be crowned champions of the Wings for Life World Run. The Wings for Life World Run is not all fun and games though. It’s a fund-raising

event hosted by international not-for-profit, Wings for Life, which funds scientific research and clinical trials around the globe in the hope of finding a cure for spinal cord injuries. The run is for men and women, young and old, first-time runners, running fanatics and professional athletes. There is nothing stopping anyone, no matter their fitness level or ability, to stand at the starting line on 3 May. The entry fee for the South African leg of the run is R250, with every cent finding its way to research funding. The Wings for Life Foundation also allocates 100% of all other proceeds to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries. The last person standing will not only win bragging rights and a trophy, but also a oncein-a-lifetime trip around the world.

Historic route on Slave Run Entries for the 5th annual Jive Slave Route Challenge (JSRC) on Sunday 10 May are now open. This unique road running event is full of history and heritage as the route takes you on a journey back into time, catering for the seasoned athlete, novices and walkers. There are four events: 21.1km half marathon, 10km run, 10km big walk and 5km fun run/walk. The ‘starter gun’ will be the miniature cannon at the Castle of Good Hope and the race goes from the City Hal through District Six, Gardens, Company Gardens, Wale Street, Bo-Kaap, Sea Point, Green Point Urban Park, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town CBD and back to the finish on the Grand Parade. Jive Slave Route Challenge spokesperson, Fatima Allie said more than 8 500 partici-

pants from across the country are expected at this year’s event. She says the race beneficiary this year is the District Six Museum. Mohamed Kajee, president of the Lion of Africa Insurance Itheko Sport AC who organise the event, says it is a run down memory lane as the route takes you through Cape Town heritage sites. “We honour, pay tribute and celebrate the accomplishments and rich heritage of slaves and exiles, despite the challenges they faced,” says Kajee. “We strive to make this the best race there is.” Those interested can enter online until 2 May at www.topevents. co.za until, or instore at all Sportsmans Warehouse stores in and around Cape Town until 26 April.

GOLF: WESTERN PROVINCE VETERANS CELEBRATE SUPERB DOUBLE VICTORY IN BENONI

Seniors still got swing T

he Western Province Seniors and Super Seniors celebrated a superb double victory as both teams successfully defended their A-Section titles for a second successive year at the INDWE SA Senior Amateur Inter-Provincial in Benoni. Peter van Coller, Japie Koopman, Andrew Cleophas, Tony Bailey, Brian Mampies, Francois le Roux, Dirk van der Merwe and Craig Poulton combined for a superb final round at Ebotse Links Golf Club on Friday to seal the Senior team’s fourth victory in five years. Super Senior stalwarts Ivan Palframan and Herman September partnered Mark Hair and rookie Tim Hewan to claim an unprecedented fifth consecutive victory in the 27th edition of the country’s largest senior team championship. “Both divisions were very tightly contested, but our players kept a cool head under pressure,” said manager John Winter. “Their single-mindedness and determination pulled through and we are incredibly proud of both teams for all the heart they showed this week to pull off another double victory for Western Province.” The Province Seniors started the final round with 10 points in hand and a two point lead, but the defending champions had to rally hard fiercely after a 5.5 – 6.5 loss to second-placed Central Gauteng.

BEN BURGER New Zealand’s Black Caps bundled the Proteas out of the Cricket World Cup and the All Blacks are a tough team to beat on the rugby field, but payback was sweet on Friday last week when South Africa’s Rhinos beat New Zealand’s Ice Blacks 3-1. The teams played in the International Ice

Central Gauteng threw everything into

their match against KwaZulu-Natal, but came up an agonising half a games point short after beating the coastal side 7.5 – 4.5. Province topped the log with 12 points and 51.5 game points, while the 2013 champions

SA puts New Zealand on ice Hockey Federation’s Ice Hockey World Championship (Division II – Group B) at the Ice Station at GrandWest. The Rhinos could unfortunately only manage to win one out of five matches and ended

had to settle in second place with a dozen points and 51 game points. KwaZulu-Natal placed third with eight points and 44.5 game points, while Gauteng North rallied to finish fourth with a 9 – 3 win against Mpumalanga after an 8.5 – 3.5 loss to Ekurhuleni. Mpumalanga will downgrade to the B-Section after the side finished at the bottom of the log after seven straight losses. The Province Super Senior quartet began the final round in third place on the grid and lagged two points behind log leaders Central Gauteng and 1.5 games points behind Gauteng North. Province drew 2-all in their Foursomes against Gauteng North and 1.5-all against Central Gauteng. Hewan and September won their Singles against both teams, while Palframan halved against Colin Weinstein from Central and the side pulled off 4 – 2 victories on both counts. Western Province sealed their fifth title with eight points, finishing one point clear of KwaZulu-Natal. The coastal side saved their best for last, defeating Ekurhuleni 7.5 – 2.5 and beating Boland 4 – 2 to climb to second in the standings. Gauteng North thumped Central Gauteng 5.5 – 0.5 to finish third on six points, edging Central Gauteng into fourth on games points.
