Egpaar van Ruyterwacht se huis is heeltemaal verwoes in ’n brand wat vermoedelik deur tikkoppe gestig is. André en Sue van Eck van Hugenotestraat het Maandag huilend tussen die puin van die huis gestaan wat hulle oor 26 jaar opgebou het. Veral Sue was ontroosbaar.

Volgens André is hulle Sondag omstreeks 05:00 deur die getoeter van ’n taxi wakker gemaak. “Ek het wakker geword toe ek hoor iemand roep my naam. Dit was ’n ou wat op pad werk toe was, en gesien het my huis brand. Toe ek opstaan, het ek gesien my huis is besig om te brand,” vertel André, waar hy op die plek staan wat eens sy voorhuis was. Hulle moes so gou moontlik die huis ontruim en Sue het genoeg tyd gehad om die

honde uit te laat. “Was dit nie vir een ou wat hier naby bly nie, het ons dit dalk nie gemaak nie. Hy het die venster met ’n klip uitgegooi. Ek kon weens die rook niks voor my sien nie en het nog gehoor hoe my televisiestel ontplof,” sê André. André glo nie die brand is ’n ongeluk nie. “Hier is gedurig tikkoppe wat langs my heining sit en dwelms gebruik. Ek was al ses keer by die polisie en het al self die tikkoppe

verwilder. Ná ek hulle by ’n vorige geleentheid weggejaag het, het hulle my gedreig en gesê hulle gaan my terugkry. So twee weke gelede het ek ’n gebrande stuk koerantpapier in my agterplaas gekry. Dit was vir my ’n teken dat die ouens ernstig is en vir my ’n waarskuwing wou gee. Dan en daar het ek besluit om hulle uit te los, maar dit was klaarblyklik te laat,” sê André. V Na bladsy 2.

Ons kon niks red nie. Ek het twee van my broers weens kanker verloor en het baie goed in die huis gehad wat my aan hulle herinner het. Dit is alles nou weg.” André sê hulle wil nie graag van hul perseel wegtrek nie en woon nou in ’n tent. “As iemand wil help, sal ek graag ’n toilet hier wou hê sodat ons hier kan bly.” Intussen wag hy nog om te hoor of sy versekering sy skade gaan dek. Die plaaslike buurtwagte waak dag en nag oor hulle. Faizel Adams, voorsitter van die buurtwag, sê tikkoppe wat op straathoeke saamdrom, is ’n groot probleem op die dorp. “As die buurtwag probeer ons om oral te wees, maar ons kan nie. Ons wil hê wat met die Van Ecks gebeur het, moet ’n wekroep wees vir inwoners van Ruyterwacht. As ons die dorp wil terugneem van die dwelmslawe, moet ons saamstaan. Die eerste stap is om by die buurtwag aan te sluit sodat ons oral kan wees,” sê Adams. Sers. Esmirelda Pheifer, polisiewoordvoerder, sê ’n saak van brandstigting is geopen. “Niemand is nog oor die voorval in hegtenis geneem nie. Die polisie doen ’n beroep op mense met inligting om na vore te kom,” sê sy.

Hulle het toe saam met beamptes van die gevangenis ’n koverte operasie van stapel gestuur. Toe die twee muile by die gevangenis kom is hulle ondersoek, maar niks kon by hulle gevind word nie. “’n Plastiekbak gevul met worsies wat die verdagtes by hulle gehad het, is deursoek. Die beamptes het die worsies oopgesny en sewe sakkies tik binne-in gekry,” sê Theunis. Theunis sê dit is nie in hierdie stadium duidelik vir wie die tik bestem was nie. In beide voorvalle is probeer om goedere oor die tronkmuur te gooi wat dan binne deur gevangenes opgetel word. TygerBurger wou onder meer by die Goodwood-gevangenis weet of hulle kon vasstel vir wie die tik bestem was, of daar ’n groot probleem met dwelmmuile by die tronk is en wat die beleid is rondom die inbring van kos vir gevangenes. Die navraag is deur die hoof van kommunikasie, Jo-ann Christians, aan topamptenare gestuur, maar teen druktyd is geen kommentaar ontvang nie.

Children from across Cape Town got the chance to experience a day in the life of the South African Air Force when the Ysterplaat base opened its doors last week. The event has been running for 12 years and on Friday Grade 10, 11 and 12 pupils from various schools attended talks and exhibitions, and some were treated to a leisure flight around the peninsula. Commanding officer Colonel AJ De Castro says the purpose of the event was to expose younger children to the Air Force and hopefully spark an interest in aviation. “We invited different flight clubs and showed them the latest developments. For this year’s event we invited children from disadvantaged areas and gave them an insight into the Air Force. We combined the aviation team and also invited the Bloodhound supersonic car team to focus on various aspects,” he says. The Bloodhound project is a global engineering adventure aimed at creating a car that will attempt to break the world land speed record to inspire the next generation to enjoy and explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics. De Castro explains this was to give children a new perspective and a better understanding of what the Air Force does. He gave a general overview of training programmes like the Young Falcons Academy.

Colonel Zolile Mama, who is at the helm of recruitment for the Air Force, explained he was present to gather information on those interested in applying. Among a long list of requirements, Mama explains science and pure maths were essential subjects with geography an added bonus. He explained applicants undergo strict medical and psychological examinations to ensure they are fit to be pilots. On the day, pupils were exposed to various aircraft, air shows and exhibitions and even got to see engineers working on the various aircraft. A group of pupils from Khayelitsha, who have never flown before, were treated by Cape Scenic Flights to a leisure flight around the peninsula.

Bar fight leads to 30 shots – one killed MAGRIET THERON @magrietron

A bottle that was broken over the head of a bar owner during an argument, led to around 30 shots fired outside his establishment, leaving one man dead and another seriously wounded. According to Colonel Neville de Beer of the Parow police, the altercation that happened inside the bar led to a bloody free-for-all shooting outside Renegades bar after midnight on 5 October. Police believe about five pistol-bearing men took part in the shooting. The bar – at 34 Connaught Road – is more commonly known as “Renegades bikers bar, home of the white line riders”, but according to De Beer reports that the shooting was gang-related are mere allegations at this stage. He says details around the incident are very sketchy, “because no-one wants to talk to us”.

Man van Bonteheuwel is in Milnerstraat in Ruyterwacht dood ná ’n partytjie. Die onbekende man het glo met ’n meisie die partytjie in Martin Adamsstraat verlaat voordat hy doodgesteek is. Volgens sers. Esmirelda Pheifer, polisiewoordvoerder, het die man en die meisie die partytjie verlaat, maar is toe deur twee ander partytjiegangers agtervolg. “Die agtervolgers het hom toe met messe aangeval. Hy het aan wonde in sy kop, bors en nek beswyk. Dit is in hierdie stadium nog nie bekend wat tot die aanval aanleiding gegee het nie,” sê Pheifer. Een verdagte is reeds in hegtenis geneem, terwyl ’n tweede nog op vrye voet is. TygerBurger het die toneel besoek waar die man doodgesteek is en net ’n hopie sand is die stille bewys van wat daar gebeur het. ’n Man wat naby die toneel woon, sê die moord is ’n uitvloeisel van ’n wetteloosheid wat die dorp oorneem. “Wat ek hier rond sien is laaities onder sestien jaar oud wat die strate oorneem. Hulle gebruik dwelms asof dit uit die mode gaan. In ’n onlangse operasie is 30 trollies van verskeie winkels by mense afgeneem. Faizel Adams, voorsitter van die buurtwag, sê die mense wat die trollies stoot maak hulle baie keer aan misdaad skuldig. “Hulle maak asof hulle haweloses is, maar eintlik gebruik hulle die trollies om goed te vervoer wat hulle gesteel het. Dit is mos makliker om ’n platskerm-televisie in ’n trollie te vervoer as om dit self te dra,” sê Adams. Volgens hom word die trollies ook gebruik om rommel te strooi. “Inwoners vra die trolliestoters om vullis na ’n stortingsterrein te neem, maar hulle gooi dit sommer net op straathoeke neer. Ons het besluit om die trolliestoters nou uit die dorp te kry. Sommige van hulle loop om 02:00 rond met trollies. Daar is nie daardie tyd nog ’n winkel oop nie, so dit is net om moeilikheid te maak,” sê Adams. Ná beslag op die trollies gelê is, gaan dit na die polisiekantoor geneem word, vanwaar dit deur die wettige eienaars afgehaal kan word. Sers. Esmirelda Pheifer, polisie-woordvoerder, sê dit is onwettig om ’n winkeltrollie te besit. “Ons weet nie van winkeltrollies wat aan privaat mense behoort nie. In die algemeen word dit deur groot winkelgroepe besit.”

wo Gugulethu men got more than they bargained for during a burglary in Table View last week. According to a report from Table View police, at about 05:30 on Wednesday 7 October the two men were arrested for house breaking using a rented vehicle. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Adrian Chandler says crime intelligence information was relayed to Flying Squad officers about a hired silver Volkswagen Polo which has been reported for being involved in various house break-ins across the Western Cape, was spotted. The vehicle was fitted with a tracking system, and with the help of the tracking company the whereabouts of the vehicle could be communicated with police and shortly after 05:00 it was traced to Parklands. “With this information, the two Flying Squad officers, Captain Pieter Dempers and Constable Shaun May, diverted to the N7

freeway towards Table View. On route the members were informed that the vehicle was on the move again towards Goodwood. The members observed the vehicle on the bridge opposite GrandWest Casino in Goodwood.” Chandler explains one of the men was pushing the vehicle while the second was steering. “The officers approached the vehicle with caution and alerted the two men that they were from the police. The men calmly submitted to the officers. “Inside the vehicle they noticed a large amount of linen. The linen was identified as the property of a company called Whitehouse, and Table View police confirmed that they were attending to a burglary at this company that took place a short while before.” The men were arrested and the vehicle linked to burglaries in the Cape Town Central police precinct.

Housebreakers nabbed in Goodwood On Thursday 8 October Goodwood police officers arrested two suspects for housebreaking. At about 13:40 Warrant Officer Trevor Vester and Sergeant André Abrahams responded to a complaint of housebreaking in progress in Molteno Street. On their arrival on the scene the members saw that the front security gate had been removed.

They proceeded around the back of the house and saw two suspects fleeing. The members managed to arrest the 27 and 40year-old suspects. The members further noticed that the house was vacant and had been vandalised. The suspects appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court.

Check – don’t wait for notice

otorists should check the renewal dates for their vehicles and not wait for a notice. According to a statement by the City of Cape Town, the National Department of Transport’s (DOT) transfer of the Electronic National Traffic Information System (eNaTIS) to the Road Traffic management centre is affecting motorists whose licence discs have expired at the end of September and are renewable by Wednesday 21 October. This transfer has resulted in motorists not receiving notices to renew their annual motor vehicle licences. Furthermore, motorists whose licence discs will expire on Saturday 31 October and are renewable by Saturday 21 November will also not be receiving renewal noti-

ces. You can renew your licence online by visiting www.capetown.gov.za, search for E-services and go to Motor Vehicle Licensing. You can also visit your local licensing office. As a rule, motorists receive a 21-day grace period in which to renew their licence discs from the end of their renewal period. “We are doing everything in our power to ease the discomfort of motorists and to come up with mitigating measures. We ask that the DOT and the Road Traffic Management Centre resolve the transfer of the eNaTIS as soon as possible and that this problem is sorted out before November, which is traditionally the busiest month of the year for motor vehicle disc renewals,” says City mayoral committee member for finance, Ian Neilson.

Please, turn off your cellphone

Our lives have become intrinsically linked with technology. Not feeling the weight of a cellphone in your pocket leaves you feeling vulnerable, naked. While we’re more connected than ever before, we’ve forgotten how to truly connect with those around us. How often do you sit around a table with friends, with at least one person (if not all of them) glued to their phones? When did we forget our manners? When did it become socially acceptable to ignore your dinner company to reply to a text message or to answer emails while in a meeting? And surely switching your phone off during an event, concert, movie, wedding or church service should be a basic courtesy. Yet we regularly find the romantic love scene in a movie or even the vows of a bride and groom interrupted by the chirping of a phone. What does it say about us as a society that money has to be spent on advertising to ensure cellphones are turned off before a movie and priests have to start sermons by asking that cellphones be switched off? It speaks to a lack of respect for others that we can’t even manage simple cellphone etiquette. It’s really simple: if you wouldn’t talk during the event, others shouldn’t hear your cellphone. It’s a courtesy that we should expend without thinking, as simple as saying please or thank you. So please turn off your cellphone. Thank you.

Why have kids if you are poor? I refer to the letter by Ronel Button (“What can we do to help”, TB, 7 October). How is it possible that Ronel “could not have comprehended the difficulties and sadness” linked to poverty? Where have you been all your life – sitting in your clean house with your belly full? Poverty is all around us. You don’t have to go visit someone in a shack to know how terribly sad it is and only then realise these people need help. It’s always been there and always will be. I agree it is sad to look into the eyes of a hungry child and these children I will gladly help. Their mothers I don’t really have sympathy for. Why on earth would someone who lives in a shack insist on having children when you know you can’t provide for them? I am not rich but I do have a job, a clean house and food on my table. I would love to have a child but I know I can not afford to do so. Birth control is free. Make use of it, then there won’t be children in need! ANONYMOUS Goodwood

No clue about queue for new ID I went to collect my ID card from the department of home affairs, Boston Centre, in Bellville yesterday. I stood in the shorter collections queue. The applications queue was very long, as usual. When I got near the entrance, everyone in front of me was let in, the queue disappeared, and I was chased to the back of the very long applications queue. Those people also said I wasn’t standing in any queue. I tried to explain to them otherwise. Now, just the previous morning I stood in the very long applications queue, and

then was sent to the shorter collections queue. I stood in that queue from 08:00 to 10:30, due to computers being offline. I stood in the queue marked “ID Collections”. Is dit ’n gebrek aan lede, ’n gebrek aan voertuie of is dit ’n gebrek aan produktiewe bestuur van lede? Sou dit dalk te wyte wees aan die feit dat daar by herhaling verskeie dae per week slegs een of twee voertuie per skof aan diens is vir die grootste gedeelte van die skof in Kuilsrivier om ’n area van amper 73 km² te diens, te patrolleer en klagtes by te woon of is die kriminele maar net een te veel vir die polisie? Ons mag nie reg in eie hande

West Beach resident has received one of the highest honours in the continent’s film industry. Tonie van der Merwe, once dubbed the father of the “black” film industry in South Africa, received the Lifetime Achievement award at the Africa Movie Academy awards in Port Elizabeth. Van der Merwe created some 400 films in the 1970s and ’80s, including Joe Bullet, one of the country’s first all-black cast films. His movies launched the careers of many African actors and nurtured a generation of African film technicians and production hands. The majority of his films were distributed by means of an informal rural distribution network, reaching audiences estimated at well over hundreds of thousands of viewers. In 1973 the South African film Joe Bullet was banned by the apartheid government after its second screening at the Eyethu cinema in Soweto. Though the ban was later lifted, producers never pursued another release until 2013. The film premiered at the 2014 Durban International Film Festival. It also featured at the To Save and Project film preservation festival in New York in November last year before being screened at the Carthage international film festival in Tunisia, and the 65th Berlinale film festival in February 2015. Established in 2005, AMAA aims to facilitate the development and relevance of African film and cinema by providing a rewards and recognition platform for filmmakers on the continent. African film makers work hard with very little and have, not through serendipity but through sheer audacity, managed to build the third largest film industry in the world,

She’s a singer, a writer, an artist, an entrepreneur and a mother. Retreat’s Lydia Lategan is a woman of many talents. She’ll be showcasing a few of them when she releases the first three tracks off her upcoming album with a concert at Upper Hall Church, in Sonata Street, Steenberg, on Sunday 1 November. Lydia was just 17 when she started writing her own gospel music and started performing, and developed the dream to release an album, “or a cassette as we had in those days”. No less than 500 songs and many years later, Lydia is finally getting a chance to live out her dream. While she plans to officially launch Master of the eagle – her debut album, containing 12 tracks – in February next year, she’ll be giving music fans a taste of her upcoming release Lydia Lategan with a three-track EP titled He knew everything, at the end of the month. “They are three beautiful songs.” Lydia described her music as “very inspiring.” A mixture of country and gospel, the upcoming album tells the story of her own personal journey of restoration through the Lord. While she had many songs to choose from, she made her choices for the album just before going into studio with producer Damian Roman. The result is an album Lydia says will encourage people all over. She says music is in her blood. Her aunt was a tap dancer and she recalls watching one of her concerts as a child, saying that

she was captured by the art of performance. Her grandfather was also a musician, as were her three brothers. A neighbour who heard her singing with her brother one day, spoke a blessing over her voice and talents. “Those beautiful words follow me,” she says, adding that she gives God all the glory for her abilities. Like many writers, it was love that motivated Lydia to begin writing. She started with a story about a childhood love, the same love that later in her life inspired 70 poems in three days. One of these, “Down memory lane” was even published in a poetry anthology. As with her poetry, Lydia’s songs come straight from the heart, telling stories that cover the full spectrum of human emotions – from lost love to hope and unexpected luck. She is constantly writing, sometimes working on three songs at a time, but when she isn’t making music, Lydia is also a painter. Some of her work will be exhibited before her performance at the Upper Hall Church. When she isn’t living out her creative passions, the busy mother of two – now adult – children runs her own signwriting, catering and interior decorating businesses. As if she isn’t busy enough, Lydia is always full of plans. She will be joined on Sunday 1 November by guest artists Pastor John Rhode, Pastor JP Smith, Sister Mac on accordion and Pastor André Lindsey among others. But the City says they are ready for this onslaught. Since invading the far northern suburbs of the city several years ago, the species – said to have made their appearance in Kuils River in 2010 – have plagued households. “Since the launch of the invasive wasp control (IWC) teams in 2014, the City has removed 8 000 European paper wasp nests, mostly from areas such as Durbanville, Kuils River, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, Bellville and Bothasig and are ready to assist the public,” says Mayco member for energy, environmental and spatial planning, Johan van der Merwe. According to him the wasp season usually occurs during warmer periods, from September to May. Both alien invasive wasp species, the European paper wasp (polistes dominula) and the German wasp (vespula germanica) are listed as a category 1b invasive species in the Alien and Invasive Species regulations in the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act. “This means that scientists have agreed that the wasps, by law, have to be removed as they pose a threat to the local ecosystem and several important industries such as deciduous fruit, wine and bee keeping industries,” says Van der Merwe. Cape Town residents are advised to be aware that the sting from these wasps is particularly painful.

The Cape Welsh Choir will be commemo rating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with a very special concert on Wednesday 28 October.

“T

o be part of a 75th anniversary is always special, but to be part of a memorial event of that period in time is really special.” So says Barrie Jones, treasurer and chorister of the Cape Welsh Choir. The all-male group will be presenting a very special concert to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain on Wednesday 28 October. The choir has been presenting an annual commemorative concert at the Simon’s Town Naval Base Church for the last 15 years and has a long standing relationship with the organisers, the RAF Association of South Africa. With the 75th anniversary being “quite a milestone”, this year’s concert will be something very special. “For us it’s a big departure,” Barrie says, explaining that they would normally go on stage and sing in the Welsh male voice choir style. This time round, the Cape Welsh Choir has put a full production or showcase together in the spirit of reflecting the “era and circumstances” of the period around World War Two. The concert takes place against the backdrop of a specially-built set that recreates a typical bomb shelter in the London Underground with the choir dressed in clothes typical of the era. “It sounds dramatic maybe, but they were hard times, so there are no pink shirts for example. It’s all very staid, working-class stuff.” They’ll be singing medleys of a selection of well-known songs from the time. “All of those songs were used to embolden that spirit of resistance.” Barrie explains that music was used in World War Two to unify Britain.

Many of the songs were popularised by “the force’s sweetheart”, Vera Lynn. South African soloist Yvette Elliott will be bringing her songs back to life, complete with period costumes. For a bit of variation, they’ll be joined by the “rousing” Cape Field Artillery Pipes and Drums as well as guests from the UK: the RAF Salon Orchestra with their big band sound and the Queen’s Colour Squadron with their precision marching display. All of this will be neatly threaded together with a “well-constructed” narrative put together by Reverend Ralph Thornley, a keen amateur historian. “He’s got a wealth of information and knowledge.” Thornley’s narrative will tell the story of the four months of the Battle of Britain, in-

terspersed with audio visual clips to help recreate the atmosphere around the war. “I think it’s going to be a very special occasion,” says Barrie, adding: “It’s going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Made up of members from all over the Cape Peninsula, the Cape Welsh Choir has presented more than 800 concerts in its 33 year existence. “So, we’ve got a few milestones of our own.” The choir’s primary focus is on fund-raising for third parties and so far they’ve been able to help other organisations raise an estimated R3 million. Three members – Alan Thompson from Pinelands, Ian Jones from Table View and Freddie Ahern from Brackenfell – have been with the choir since the very beginning.

While the average age of the choir members is 50 plus, they are always looking for new and younger members and use every concert as a recruitment opportunity. Die meerderheid van die geld is egter elders in die land aangewend, en juis daarom poog Hennie Rossouw, bestuurder van Solidariteit Helpende Hand se Wes-Kaapse skenkingskantoor in Kraaifontein en bestuurslid van die Wes-Kaapse streekstudiefonds, om die werksaamhede van dié fonds in Kaapstad te bevorder. Sowat 150 gaste uit verskeie gemeenskappe in Kaapstad het die afgelope Saterdag ’n spesiale geleentheid op die Bloemendalwynlandgoed ter ondersteuning van die fonds bygewoon. “Hoe meer bewusmaking ons oor die fonds in die Wes-Kaap kan skep, hoe meer studente sal ons kan help,” sê Hennie. Die fonds is in 2012 onder die vaandel van die Solidariteit-studiefondssentrum gestig en bestuur tans 164 individuele studiefondse landswyd. “Die doel van hierdie fonds is om sover moontlik deur middel van rentevrye lenings behoeftige studente die geleentheid te bied om verder te gaan studeer.” In 2012 is 564 lenings uitgereik, gevolg deur 693 in 2013 en 948 in 2014. Die meerderheid van die lenings is egter in ander dele van die land uitgereik, omdat die fondse finansieel afgebaken word. “Daar is tans 3 000 aansoeke vir die volgende jaar en dis ons droom om al 3 000 leerders van oor die land heen te kan help,” sê hy.

Volgens Rossouw is daar tans ’n groot behoefte om veral die fonds in Kaapstad en die Wes-Kaap uit te brei. Volgens Rossouw kon die fonds nog net 25 kinders in die Wes-Kaapstreek help, en hang die getal kinders wat jaarliks gehelp word af van die hoeveelheid fondse wat beskikbaar is. “Maar die behoefte in Kaapstad alleen is oorweldigend. Ons kry op ’n gereelde basis hulpkrete van families uit veral Kraaifontein, Parow, Brackenfell, Bellville en Melkbosstrand, maar geld wat elders in die land ingesamel word, word daar aangewend.” Rossouw poog om die Wes-Kaap se streekfonds in die komende jare op te bou vir plaaslike studente. “Fondse is beperk. Daarom moet ons dit deur die jaar aanvul met bykomende fondsinsamelingsprojekte en geleenthede,” en hy voeg by dat verdere studies nie meer ’n keuse is nie, maar ’n noodsaaklikheid. Volgens Rossouw kan voornemende studente gehelp word uit die sentrale streekfonds of deur middel van ’n onafhanklike donateur wat die studente befonds. Skaters meet at GrandWest

he annual Cape inter-provincial figure skating championship will take place at the ice rink at GrandWest from Friday to Sunday. This promises to be a bumper event with entries streaming in from all skating regions. Approximately 120 skaters are expected. The competition comprises solo skating where the skater performs required elements of their own – including jumps and

spins – to music, as well as pair skating and synchronized skating where a team of 12 to 16 skaters perform in unison to music with a variety of lifts, circles, lines and wheels with intricate footwork. Judges from all over South Africa will be officiating at this event, and there is an international selection meeting scheduled straight after, where the skaters will be assessed for international participation and the world championship.

The skaters are scored on a computerised system with instant playback facilities, and the judges make use of this to give the skater the best result when assessing their performance. Western Province is the largest skating province and plan to enter 50 solo skaters as well as five synchronized skating teams in an attempt to retain the inter provincial title held for the past 16 years. Skaters entering this event range from the very young (under

10 years) to senior men and women where the average age is 22 years, as well as adult sections with competitors over 25. Ice skating opens many doors with many previous champions earning their living by performing overseas with professional ice shows such as Disney on ice, Holiday on ice and the Russian imperial ice stars, all of which have visited our shores. ellville amateur Altin van der Merwe continued a dream season with a breakthrough victory in the Kuils River Challenge on the IGT Tour Cape last week. The 18-year-old posted an impressive five-under-par 67 in the final round at Kuils River Golf Club to march to a seven-stroke victory on 14-under-par 202. Van der Merwe, who is a member of the Bellville Golf Club, denied a host of top international visitors when he claimed the Curro South African Juniors International (SAJI) at Durbanville Golf Club in March and five months later came heartbreakingly close to a second international victory in the Global Junior Golf Tour’s RB German Junior. He opened with a mediocre 70, but drew on the experience gained abroad to open up a four shot lead with a blistering 65 in the second round. “I was pretty disappointed with my first round and I knew it would take a huge effort to get in front, especially with the pros in the field,” he said. “I was a member at Kuils River for

she will be visiting her physiotherapist again this week to help repair her body. “However, it is now two years since I did the Gun Run, and I really have a bone to pick with this particular race, as the last time I did it I was forced to literally walk the last 5km due to injury.” She completed the Gun Run in a time of 01:27:14 making her the sixth out of 2 424 female runners to cross the line. She added that there are a couple of other track events (800m, 1500m and 5000m) on the horizon, as well as some shorter road races (1015km). “However, my next 21km road race after Saturday is the HFPA half marathon in November in Bloubergstrand.”

High School graduate, though, was getting the job done. “I lost by two shots to Trevor Mahoney in my first IGT Tour Cape start here at Kuils River in June, so it feels really good to pull it through this time around,” Van der Merwe said. “We didn’t have that many pros in the field this week, but it was really nice to test myself, and to see where I rate. We’ll have to see how I do in the upcoming events at other courses, but this kind of performance gives me a lot of confidence ahead of Q-School in December.” Van der Merwe will only be able to bank half of the first prize cheque to stay within the amateur rules, but he was more than happy to let the balance go to the IGT Tour Cape Development Fund. “When an amateur wins, they put the balance of the prize money into a fund that is used to finance players who wouldn’t otherwise be able to compete on the IGT Tour Cape. I think that is a really neat development initiative.”
