ruptured pipe under one of the petrol pumps at the Sasol De Bron service station in June, has allegedly caused several illnesses among nearby residents in recent months. Sasol this week confirmed they fully investigated the incident and reported the resulting pollution to local and provincial authorities back in July, yet unsuspecting residents were never informed of this and they never received relevant information or warnings from the City of Cape Town. “The fumes were so bad some mornings it was hard to leave the house. It choked us. We could hardly leave our doors open. One of my neighbours suffers from continuous migraines since the fumes started,” she said. “Another neighbour has a three-year-old

who now complains of chest problems. My sinus troubles won’t dissipate,” she says. De Wet says even birdlife has left the area since the spillage. According to De Wet, she reported the problem to the City of Cape Town several times. “They came out once, but that’s where it ended. Nobody helped us or informed us about anything. They certainly did not tell us about the burst pipe or the pollution, nor did they issue any warnings about how this could affect our health,” she said. Although maintenance work was done at the fuel station last week, residents still fear serious hazards. “We hope that whatever caused the pollution has now been rectified, but we have no certainty. We don’t even know the extent of the pollution. Petrol is flammable and anything could have happened,” she said last

week. In response to a media enquiry from TygerBurger, the City of Cape Town on Thursday stated that they were aware of the situation. “Along with the provincial and national departments of environmental affairs, we were informed of an apparent petrol spillage at the service station in question on 11 July,” said the City’s Mayco member for health, Siyabulela Mamkeli, on Thursday. “We are working closely with all parties concerned to reduce the fumes and pollution to the ground and stormwater systems. Given the nature of the incident, it cuts across various levels of government and City departments,” she added. “After the initial site investigation in July, which found that the obvious pollution and associated fumes/smells had dissipated, the City’s Environmental Health Depart-

ment has not received further complaints on this issue” she said. Residents however dispute this. “We reported the smells and fumes several times over the months and if there was an ‘apparent spillage’ we should have been informed.” De Wet says it was only after TygerBurger probed the issue last week that they received proper feedback from the City. “We turned to the media in desperation last Monday. A day or two later we, for the first time, received notices in our post boxes from the City,” she added. Mamkeli confirmed that a site visit was done on Tuesday 13 September. “It was found that the site is under construction and that underground couplings were being replaced in an effort to prevent further pollution of the environment,” she says. fashion show held at Brackenfell Curro on Saturday was the highlight of a campaign to change society’s view of children with disabilities. Nicky de Beer, marketing director at Daniel and Friends Fund, says they launched the “Different is Cool” school awareness campaign at the beginning of the second school term. “We have become increasingly aware of society’s misperception about people with disabilities, more so evident in children whose uncertainty and, sadly, sometimes negative view of those with special needs, is based purely on a lack of knowledge and understanding,” she says. “With empathy and compassion being

emotions best instilled at a young age, we created a campaign which could be shared with children of school-going age in a fun, but informative way.” The highlight of this campaign was the physical inclusion of special needs children as well as their siblings in the form of a fashion show. Apparel was custom-made for each special-needs child by Sheron from GraciJames designs, while the siblings assisting wore the Different is Cool branded T-shirts. Emphasis was placed on each child’s condition, thus raising awareness to the public attending the Different is Cool Fashion Show.

The unit will deal with this finding in terms of the Air Quality Management Bylaw and provide feedback directly to the complainants,” she said. She assured the complainants that the City was doing everything possible to address the aspects of this incident where it fell within the ambit of local government. “In the event that residents continue to experience health issues, they must liaise with their local Environmental Health officer on 021 980 1342 immediately,” she said. Alex Anderson, a Sasol spokesperson, says an investigation commenced shortly after the incident in June. “As a precautionary measure, the franchisee voluntarily closed until vapour levels subsided and to allow the investigation to commence. The investigation has shown that the incident stems from storage infrastructure failure,” he said. Accordingly, Sasol has taken full responsibility for the incident and the rehabilitation of the site.

“Given the findings, a Nema Section 30 Incident was reported to the National Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) on 22 July,” says Anderson. “The DEA delegated the case to the Western Cape environmental authorities who delegated it to the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality. We have been proactive in working with and continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities.” Sasol has implemented a full rehabilitation plan with rigorous monitoring in place. “As part of mitigating the incident, a pump and tank contractor was mobilised to the site for immediate rehabilitation to recover any free product that was present underground and to reduce vapour levels. A vapour recovery system has subsequently been installed in order to extract the vapours and augment extraction of free product from the ground,” he says. “Sasol takes environmental management and safety very seriously, particularly where our products are in close proximity to the community. We extend our apologies to our customers and the community for the inconvenience caused.”

Apart from maintaining existing infrastructure, Transport for Cape Town is also responsible for the provision of road infrastructure where new developments are taking place,” said Brett Herron, the City’s Mayco member for transport. “As such, the Clara Anna Fontein developers, in consultation with TCT, commenced with this project to meet the increase in traffic to be generated by the new development in Durbanville,” Herron said. The first phase, entailing the upgrade of Vissershok Road between the intersection with Grysbok Road and 200m past Mosselbank River Avenue, commenced in June. Now with the second phase, High Street will be temporarily closed to traffic between the intersections with Vrede and Kerk streets from Monday 26 September until mid-December. This is to allow for the construction of a traffic circle along Racecource Road where the road joins High and Kerk streets. Road users are advised to use alternative routes such as Squier and Basson roads to gain access to Racecourse Road, or Vrede and Gladstone streets for access to Kerk Street. “The closure of High Street will enable us to do the construction much more quickly. The sooner we complete the traffic circle, the sooner motorists will be able to use the road,” he said, urging motorists to make provision for delays. “We regret the inconvenience but, once completed, residents will greatly benefit from a safer road and improved road infrastructure that will assist with traffic flow and congestion in this area,” he said. o pain, no gain – this is what motorists in Durbanville, especially around Race Course Road, are about to experience when the second and final phase of the Vissershok Road project commences. This project by Transport for Cape Town (TCT), the City of Cape Town’s transport authority, is scheduled to start this coming Monday, according to a media release issued by the City last week. Even more disruption to traffic and delays are expected until mid-December, especially with the temporary closure of High Street – an important thoroughfare between St John’s Road and Race Course Road – before the relief of the upgraded road network will be enjoyed. Currently, in another project by the City, Jip de Jager Drive is being extended in two concurrent projects – from the Vineyard Office Park to Tyger Valley Road, and from Tyger Valley Road to Racecourse Road – to meet St John’s Road. This project is estimated to take about 16 months to complete. The second phase of the Vissershok Road project entails measures to improve traffic flow along Racecourse Road, including the construction of a traffic circle and turning lane, as well as a new traffic signal. The entire Vissershok Road project – valued at approximately R33 million – is funded by the developers of the Clara Anna Fontein development and through development charges for the upgrading of bulk infrastructure in close proximity. “Cape Town is a growing city with more and more people opting to settle in our well-

ore cancer patients receiving effective contemporary cancer treatment, is the outcome we seek,” says Trevor Sparkes, training director at Elekta, the Swedish manufacturer of specialist oncology radiotherapy and radiosurgery equipment. Since opening their advanced medical training facility at Cape Gate Oncology centre in October last year, they have already successfully trained 25 medical professionals throughout Africa, on the use of the digital linear accelerator, of which four are in use at Tygerberg Hospital. The digital linear accelerators allow for limited radiation of normal tissue to reduce side effects. Trainees included medical physicists, engineers and radiation therapists from South Africa and beyond. “Our main objective is to address the shortage of trained radiation professionals in Africa. In fact it is critical, because not only are these machines dangerous if not used correctly, but the lack of clinicians and equipment-trained radiotherapy professionals can impede the delivery of radiation therapy services,” he says. The Elekta medical training facility has a training agreement with Tygerberg Hospital and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT); and is equipped with

non-clinical Elekta radiation therapy, brachytherapy, oncology information management and treatment planning. Sparkes says an agreement signed with Tygerberg Hospital last week will allow trainees to receive hands-on training. “This is a huge step forward in that trainees that are part of the clinical education programme at the hospital, will have the unique opportunity to come here and do practical training on our systems,” he says. Sparkes says the access that cancer patients in low-income countries have to radiotherapy equipment is unacceptably low. “More such machines are needed in the public health systems of especially African countries,” he says. “Therefore we are committed to making radiotherapy more accessible and continue to invest in training and education on the continent.” According to prof. Hannah Simmonds, head of radiation oncology at Tygerberg Hospital, the impact of cancer diagnoses is ever increasing on the African continent. In ten years it will have doubled from 600 000 to over a million. Tygerberg Hospital’s radiation oncology unit is one of only two state units furnished with advanced oncology radiotherapy equipment to serve around four million people in the Western Cape, treating around 2500 patients a year, with an increase of 300 year on year.

If you see two “clowns” at the traffic intersection of Bill Bezuidenhout Road and Willie van Schoor Avenue, do not give them money – they are scamsters. So says Wendy Kotze, an irate resident who regularly confronts the man and woman who dress up as clowns under the pretence of collecting money for abused women and children. “Once again I saw this ‘hoax’ play off where people hoot to give these scamsters money as they are ‘raising funds for abused women and children’,” she says. “They are dressed up in clown outfits – painted faces; the man dressed up as a woman – all just a show and of course to hide

their faces, but it is always the two of them.” She says when she first confronted them asking who they were collecting money for, they could not answer which exact organisation it was or where it was situated. Bellville police say they are aware of the two alleged scamsters. “We know of them, but they aren’t here that often,” says Warrant Officer Henrietta van Niekerk. “The public is always warned to give responsibly, as there are many organisations that are collecting money legally. Dít is danksy ’n begeesterde werksessie wat deur sowat 30 belangstellendes wat wissel van ’n 7-jarige seuntjie wat sy vleistande verloor het, tot ’n 13-jarige tiener wat die aarde wil help red, asook groentjies en gesoute tuiniers bygewoon is. Twee inwoners van Fisantekraal en ’n Bothasig-polisieman van Khayelitsha was ook daar om te leer om hul kennis terug te ploeg in hul gemeenskappe. Dis aangebied deur Sydney Saayman by die NG kerk DurbanvilleBergsig in Durbanville as deel van die kerk se groenbediening. “Groen verbruikersdruk waar mense weerstand toon teen ons verbruikersgedrewe samelewing is wêreldwyd aan die toeneem,” sê Saayman. “Die vraag na goedere het so groot geword dat feitlik alles in die wêreld op massaproduksie berus – ook in voedselvoorsiening en dit veroorsaak groot gesondheidsgevare waarvan die meeste van ons nie eers bewus van is nie. “Ons planeet kan die druk ook nie meer vat nie. Die doel van ’n organiese groentetuin is om mense te help om gesond te eet en te leef, selfversorgend

Pleks van sintetiese chemikalieë word biologiese pesbeheer en natuurlike insekroofdiere aanbeveel. Dus, plant Stink Afrikanertjies en Knoffelbolletjies tussen jou groente om plae te verdryf en los die akkedissies, spinnekoppe en paddas om hul werk te doen, vertel Saayman. “Mense kan slakke en wurms fisiek uit hul tuine verwyder, of dit in kookwater week vir ’n vloeistof om oor plante te spuit. Geen insek hou van die reuk van sy eie dooies nie!” raai hy aan. Daar is talle rate teen peste en plae op die internet. “Die goue reël is, skep ’n gesonde omgewing vir jou plante en siektes en plae sal ’n uitsondering wees,” verseker hy. Saayman het diegene wat die werksessie bygewoon het, aangemoedig om ’n leier te wees en hul bure en vriende te motiveer om ook ’n organiese groentetuin te begin. Die volgende werksessie in die kweek van ’n organiese groentetuin word op Saterdag 12 November van 09:00 tot 16:00 by die kerk aangebied. Die koste behels R100, verversings en middagete ingesluit. Call for public artworks to ‘infect’ the city The Africa Centre and the Institute of Creative Arts are calling for artwork proposals for Infecting the City Public Art Sessions 2017. t’s a jungle out there! That is the suburban streets of areas in Durbanville, Kraaifontein and Brackenfell. In areas of Langeberg and Pinehurst, the grass and weeds have grown as high as hip length; the only solace being the unbridled wildflowers allowing for some colour in the endless sea of weeds. In fact, a drive through some of these areas feels very much like a drive through the countryside, as this journalist experienced last week – except, it isn’t the countryside! “The grass is becoming so long now, criminals can literally hide their loot in there,” said one of the countless residents who phoned TygerBurger. “At some intersections its becoming dangerous for motorists as they cannot see oncoming traffic properly,” says another. In areas of Langeberg, residents were so desperate they took to the streets with their own lawnmowers, like the folk in Robyn Street who cleared up the public park in their street. Anda Ntsodo, the City’s Mayco member for community services, last week confirmed that the City Parks department has not been able to appoint new contractors to

take up the mowing service due to an appeal being lodged by one of the companies. “The City’s legal services department is assessing the validity of this appeal with urgency, with a view to concluding the matter as soon as is reasonably possible. It is only once this matter is resolved that new contractors can be appointed to service the whole city,” she says, adding alternative arrangements have been made to address the matter in the interim. “A process that has allowed for the appointment of smaller contractors on a short term basis to mow these areas, has begun,” she says. These contractors began work on Monday 12 September and appointments will continue. “Contractors in the Kraaifontein area will commence mowing from Monday, 19 September onward, and Langeberg is scheduled for attention,” she says. “Currently the City Parks department is starting with the problematic parks and public open spaces within each area. Major through routes are being prioritised where the highest risk is experienced. I therefore urge communities to keep us informed and ask that residents report unkempt parks and open spaces via the City’s website at http://www.capetown.gov.za/en/ServiceRequests/Pages/default.aspx

et soos ’n kwilt ’n versameling van verskillende soorte materiaal is, en saam ’n grootse kunswerk skep, só snoer ’n kwiltgroep vriendskapsbande en onbaatsugtigheid saam, wat groter as die groep self is. Die Loslappies-kwiltgroep se missie is om ’n manjifieke kwilt te maak en dan genoeg lootjies te verkoop sodat hulle met die opbrengs ’n stoof en eetgerei kan koop vir die Rusoord vir Dowes in Bellville. Die nood was blykbaar so groot dat ’n weldoener sommer klaar die geld vir ’n stoof geskenk het. Nou moet die Loslappies genoeg lootjies verkoop sodat hulle die weldoener kan vergoed en ander items soos messe, vurke, potte en panne vir die sentrum in Bellville kan aankoop. Bernmari Joubert (66) van die kwiltgroep sê die fokus moet nie op haar of die kwiltgroep val nie, maar op die droom. “Een persoon se droom kan ’n verskil maak in die lewens van ander. Streef jou drome na!” moedig sy aan. “Ons word gemotiveer deur ’n liefde vir ons medemens,” sê sy.

Die kwiltgroep het 28 lede van oraloor Kaapstad en vergader maandeliks in Panorama om saam te werk aan die droom. Verlede week het die Nasionale Instituut vir Dowes op Worcester en Radio Tygerberg die groep ontmoet by die NG kerk Panorama tydens ’n oorhandigingsplegtigheid. Gister (Dinsdag) het ’n paar Loslappie-lede hul bande met die rusoord versterk deur skons, wat gebak is in die nuwe oond, af te lewer en saam Bybelstudie te hou. Die kwiltgroep is duidelik meer as net ’n groep individue. “Gedurende ons vegaderings deel ons mekaar se lief en leed,” sê Joubert. “Ons gee raad en is nooit te krities nie. Ons is ’n sisterhood en met hierdie droom is nie een van ons negatief nie. Ons is vuur en vlam!” Nou kort hulle nog net die ondersteuning van die gemeenskap. Die kwilt waaraan hulle werk, sal aan die wenner gaan van die lootjie-kompetisie, wat sluit wanneer hulle die naam op 30 Oktober uitlees. Heritage celebrated in multiple layers There’s an aspect of everyone’s heritage to explore this week during the Iziko Museum’s in_Herit Festival. TygerBurger’s sister publication in the southern suburbs, People’s Post, is the media partner of the in_Herit Festival, which takes place until Sunday 25 September. temporary African twist. It has been planned to explore exciting ways to grow the audience for fashion, culture and heritage in Cape Town that showcases 43 fashion design students, and aims to allow diverse museum public access to a unique cultural event. The museums, too, house many inspiring and enthralling exhibitions. African Dinosaurs – always a hit with children – is on show at the Iziko South African Museum. Exhibitions at the Iziko South African National Gallery provide a multi-layered visual feast ranging from historical painting and sculpture to contemporary art. Red in the Rainbow, Singing Freedom and Simon Allen’s installation, Labels – showcased at the Slave Lodge – are poignant narratives that inspire. You Strike a Rock at the Iziko Koopmans-De Wet House marries current narratives of empowerment within the historical context of women as activists throughout time. The Iziko Mobile Museum will be out and about visiting disadvantaged communities throughout the week. It is aimed at bringing the museum to the communities. Bekende sportman verloor kankerstryd E

en van Welgelegen en die land se bekendste en veelsydigste wêreldrekordatlete het op Woensdag 7 September die stryd teen beenmurgkanker verloor. George Bonzet (64), beter bekend as Ewald, het van vroeg af reeds sy staal op die atletiekveld gewys, vertel sy seun, Ewald jr. Reeds in 1969, in sy pa se matriekjaar, het Ewald sr. die WP se junior rekords laat spat, en van 1972 tot 1979 verbeter hy 11 SA rekords, sê sy seun. Kort hierna is sy pa na Duitsland waar hy ’n nuwe 10 000 m-rekord opgestel het wat eers ses jaar later in 1980 verbeter is. Hierdie poging plaas Ewald sr. derde op die lys van beste vertonings van alle tye in die wêreld, maar dit was nog geensins die einde van sy sukses. Net die volgende jaar in 1975 stel Ewald sr. die beste tyd in die wêreld op in die 2 000 m. Dit was egter tydens moeilike tye in die

apartheidsera in Suid-Afrika, en Ewald kon nie aan die Olimpiese Spele deelneem nie. Dit het hom egter nie verhoed om sy vlag hoog te laat wapper en as individu in onder meer Duitsland, Finland, Italië, België, Amerika en selfs Angola deel te neem nie. In Amerika was Ewald sr. onoorwonne in binnenshuise wedlope, vertel sy seun. Hier klop hy onder meer vir Frank Shorter, die destydse Olimpiese kampioen, en word ses universiteitsbeurse aangebied, wat hy egter van die hand wys. “My pa word die eerste atleet in die geskiedenis van die land wat 10 droommyle hardloop. Hy word een van slegs drie atlete wat Springbokkleure in drie atletiekkodes verwerf – in baan-, veld- en padwedlope,” sê Ewald jr. “Op 32-jarige ouderdom hardloop hy een van die vinnigste debuutmarathons nog in die wêreld – 2:12:08 tydens geweldige

stormagtige reën en windtoestande, terwyl die wêreldrekord in daardie stadium op 2:09:07 gestaan het. “Dít maak hom een van die veelsydigste langafstandatlete wat SA nóg opgelewer het, asook een van die vyf mees veelsydigste atlete in wêreldgeskiedenis.” Sy pa is in 1982 vereer met die gesogte Reggie Walker-medalje, die hoogste toekenning van die destydse atletiekunie vir sy jarelange prestasie op die atletiekbaan en as afrigter. Ewald sr. is in 2007 gediagnoseer met miëloom, ’n soort beenmurgkanker, en moes twee beenmurgoorplantings ondergaan. Ten tyde van sy sterfte was hy reeds 42 jaar aan die departement van gesondheid verbonde. Ewald sr. laat sy vrou, René, en seun agter. ’n Lofdiens is die afgelope Saterdag uit die NG kerk Parow gehou, waar René die orrelis is.

Matigheid is mos een van die lewe se goue reëls. Vat nou maar ’n slab chocolate. As jy hom nie gaan deel nie, is dit wys om te “rantsoeneer” – soos in ’n blokkie of rytjie nou en die res stuksgewys later. Daar was ’n tyd toe ek maar moeilik vasgesteek het by net een blokkie. Dis darem lank gelede! Dit was seker maar ’n keuse tussen selluliet of selfbeheersing, en mettertyd het die soettand gekwyn. Versoeking se gesig het intussen verander. Ek het ’n gesonder verslawing gevind – die lyf ter wille. Draf was die laaste tien jaar of wat my voorkeur. Ook sodat ek nog daai blokkie chocolate mag geniet sonder te veel skuldgevoelens. In Februarie vanjaar knou ’n pyn in my linkervoet my drafplanne vir 2016. Fietsry word die alternatief. Eers op my trap-der-stilstand voor die TV deur die winter se vroegdonker-aande en nou die laaste maand of wat verken my bergfiets Joostenberg se grondpaaie saam met my drafklub se Dis ’n mooi rustige MTB-groepie (vir die beseerdag, die des en agterryers). Toe my wekker Sondag om 04:00 afgaan, was daar ’n oomblik se wyfeling, maar nee, ek het mos my ontsnaproete uitgewerk – sou by die 14 km-merker kan uitval en nog kan terugstap na die eindpunt in Groenpunt. Dis ’n mooi dag, die geselskap vloei en by die 14 km-merk stap ons mos nou eers lekker. En by 24 km is mos ’n afsnypunt en ’n bus ... Amper ses en ’n half uur ná ons weggespring het, stap ons verby die 42,2 km-eindpunt. Maandagoggend rol ek uit die bed; kom met moeite orent. My bene voel of hulle aan die verkeerde lyf geskroef is, en ook nie te vas nie. Ai tog, slim vang sy baas! – Carina Roux

Selfs die strate en gebiede in Wallacedene en Bloekombos, wat nie eens belasting betaal nie, lyk beter. Ek weet nie waar jy bly nie, maar kom kyk gerus na Kleinbegin, Belmontpark en die lane, dan kan jy sien ons het nie eens ’n speen om aan te suig nie. Ek beoog om die premier en De Lille hierheen te nooi. Ek het ook vir die inwoners gesê ons moet staak om eiendomsbelasting te betaal, want hulle kom nie hul ooreenkoms na nie. Revive the NHW, street committees Being an informed South African means to be faced with news reports of high crime rates that affect us all – without discrimination. Perhaps it is time to think about safety, and more importantly; what we can do about it. Sexual offences have seen a 3.2% decline and women remain particularly vulnerable in this regard. The latest crime statistics further reveal a 4.9% rise in murders while car hijacking saw a 14% rise. Among others, driving under the influence has also increased and is up by 11%. It’s no secret that our police are underresourced; this is the result. South Africa has a centralised police force, while many other countries have implemented a decentralised approach to policing. In our case, the tide seems to be taking us the other way as government wants to centralise even the Metropolitan Police. So it may be a long time before we see adequate policing which will deter

crimes and prevent repeat offences. There is no substitute for effective policing, but there are a few things that you can do to avoid being a victim of crime: 1. Who are your local policing authorities? Take time to get to know the police officers at the station in your precinct. Get their contact details and find out where the hotspots are in your area. 2. What crimes are most popular in your area? If you know what crimes are being committed most frequently, you can make an effort to avoid being a target. 3. Do you have a street committee? If not, it’s time to start one and do it on a social media group, for quick communication. Get your neighbours to sign up to a WhatsApp or Facebook group where you can share alerts to possible criminal activity in your neighbourhood. 4. Join the local community policing forum. You and I each have a role to play in our own safety. Sharing information about activity in your area will help keep a lookout for criminal activity. 5. Hair affair: rules teach discipline I haven’t really followed the latest hair debacle, though I recall there being similar incidents in the past. I agree 100% with Linda (“Kinders moet reëls nakom”, TB, 14 September). As a former Fairbairn College parent with friends who are current parents, their children and my girls were sent home on numerous occasions, including having to

sit detention for weeks on end regarding hair issues. The code of conduct existed before some of us were born. It states everything clearly, and may I add, it’s issued almost a year before the learner even knows whether he/she will be excepted at the school. Our children should be taught the importance of rules and punctuality. It teaches them discipline and responsibility. I would also like to stress that I do not condone racism on any level. Blokkiesraaisels word waardeer “Sy is ’n blokkiesraaisel-baanbreker”, TB, 14 September, verwys. Baie dankie aan Yvonne en haar familie vir baanbrekerswerk oor die jare heen wat soveel plesier aan lesers verskaf het (en nog verskaf). Ek dink dit is ’n wenresep vir enige tydskrif en koerant. Daar is min dinge lekkerder as om te gaan sit met ’n blokkiesraaisel. Die “soek” na woorde is boonop goeie oefening vir die breinselle. In my gedagtes kan ek sien hoe spring die geheueknoppies in my brein op en af – soos ’n outydse tikmasjien – om die regte woorde te vind wat inpas in die spasies. Dis ’n sinvolle manier om tyd te verwyl en dit laat jou ook met ’n gevoel van genoegdoening as jy dit kan klaarmaak. Dus, wys my die persoon wat die versoeking kan weerstaan! Rekordgetal leerders registreer vir Unisa ’n

Rekordgetal musiekleerders van die Hoërskool Brackenfell is geregistreer om in Oktober Unisa se graad 6-teorie-eksamen af te lê. Die vier matriekleerders wat musiek as vak neem – Sinnead Cogill, Brad-Lee Lesar, Ruan Delport en Angela Witbooi, sowel as ’n oudleerder,Tammy Gilson, gaan hierdie gevorderde eksamen aandurf. Vier van hierdie leerders het reeds die skool se erekleure verwerf omdat hulle in vorige eksamens op die Unisa-ererol geplaas is. Twee graad 11-leerders, Carla Luijk en Riana de Mooij, is ook reeds besig om vir die eksamen voor te berei. Riana het 89% en Carla 94% behaal in hul graad 5-eksamens en het ook reeds erekleure in musiek verwerf.

In 2015 het 27 musiekleerders Unisa se teorie-eksamens (graad 2 tot 5) geskryf, van wie 14 met lof geslaag het. Ses van hierdie leerders is op die ererol van Unisa geplaas. Cecilia van Zyl het 100% vir haar graad 3-eksamen behaal en daarmee het sy die Hennie Joubert-merietetoekenning ontvang. Daarby het die 18 musiekleerders van die Hoërskool Brackenfell wat aan die onlangse 2016-Tygerbergse eisteddfod deelgeneem het, ’n gemiddelde punt van 86% behaal. Hulle het aan 29 items deelgeneem in afdelings vir klavier, sang en strykinstrumente. Agt leerders het hoogste lof gekry (90% en hoër), met die hoogste persentasie deur Sinnead Cogill, wat 96% in haar klavierkonsert verwerf het.

Die Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans (SBA) gaan weer vanjaar sy loopskoene aantrek om Erfenisdag deur die strate van die Bo-Kaap te vier, en almal is genooi. Met dié 7 km-stap hoop die organisasie om mense van verskillende agtergronde bymekaar te bring, en daarom word lesers genooi om op Saterdag 24 September saam te stap. Die stap begin om 10:00 en inskrywing is gratis, maar stappers moet egter steeds registreer. Dít sal om 07:30 en 09:30 by die Boorhaanolsentrum te Pentzstraat 26 in die BoKaap plaasvind. Hierdie is ook die begin- en eindpunt van die stap. Elke stapper se inskrywingsnommer is ’n spesifieke idioom om ook Afrikaanse idiome as ’n taalerfenis te laat herleef. Stappers kry ook ’n bottel water by die begin en ’n verfrissende koeldrank aan die einde, tesame met ’n medalje van die Afrikaanse

Taalraad. By die eindpunt sal daar lekker Kaaps-Maleise kos soos aknie, roti, kerrie, samoosas, koesisters, melktert en baie meer te koop wees. Terwyl deelnemers en besoekers smul, sal hulle vermaak word deur die Jaloersbokkies en die Zinnias, ’n Kaaps-Maleise koor. Vandag is die Bo-Kaap bekend vir sy tradisionele kookkuns, helderkleurige huise en romantiese nou keisteenstrate. Afrikaans, en meer spesifiek “Afri-Kaaps”, is die leidende taal in die Bo-Kaap, waar die oorgrote meerderheid inwoners die Moslemgeloof volg. Die wortels van Afrikaans lê natuurlik ook in die Bo-Kaap, soos die ikoniese Bo-Kaapse taalkenner, dr. Achmat Davids, bevind het. Atleet van kinderhuis mik na Spele ESMÉ ERASMUS

Bronwyn George het onlangs sy WP-kleure in landloop behaal. Nie net SA kleure nie, maar ook die 2020-Olimpiese Spele is nou in sy visier.

Jong seun van die Durbanville-kinderhuis droom groot – hy wil oor vier jaar in die 5 000 m-item aan die Olimpiese Spele in Tokio gaan deelneem. Dié 17-jarige langasem, Bronwyn George, het maar eers onlangs sy eerste wedloop gedoen, maar het uit die staanspoor stof in sy teenstanders se oë geskop. Dit het alles in Desember verlede jaar begin toe hy saam met Jana van Rensburg, bemarker en fondswerwer by die Durbanvillekinderhuis, en haar man, Jacques, aan een van die Durbanville-kinderhuis se tweejaarlikse veldlope deelgeneem het. “Bronwyn het die ander deelnemers te pletter gehardloop en ons het besluit om hom meer gereeld saam na wedlope te neem. “Nou is daar geen keer meer aan Bronwyn nie,” vertel Jana. Hy het al selfs onlangs ’n R1 000-geskenkbewys in ’n nagwedloop by die Durbanville-gholfbaan met sy talent ge-

wen. Daarmee het hy vir hom splinternuwe hardloopskoene gaan koop. Bronwyn, ’n vlak 3-student in houtwerk aan die Westcliff-vaardigheidskool in Bellville, voltooi aanstaande jaar sy skoolopleiding. Hardloop is vir Bronwyn nie heeltemal ’n nuutjie nie – hy het die vorige jaar en ook vanjaar WP-kleure in landloop behaal. Hy mik nou om sy Suid-Afrikaanse kleure in landloop te behaal as hy einde vandeesmaand die Westelike Provinsie by die SA byeenkoms in Witrivier in Mpumalanga gaan verteenwoordig. “Ek stel vir my elke jaar ’n nuwe mikpunt – eers WP-kleure, nou mik ek vir SA kleure. “God het vir my die talent gegee om te hardloop en ek wil dit gebruik,” vertel hy. Sy droom van deelname aan die Olimpiese Spele is gebore op Sondag 11 September toe hy ’n goue medalje gewen het tydens die Cell C Day of Races in Kaapstad oor 5 km met ’n ongelooflike tyd van slegs 16:06. Hy was eer-

ste in die Young, Fast and Free-afdeling vir o.18-deelnemers. Slegs sowat twee en ’n half minuut staan tussen hierdie wentyd en die kwalifiserende tyd van 13:23 van die Olimpiese Spele, “Hier by die kinderhuis streef ons daarna om elke kind met ’n droom toe te rus. Om die 5 km in 13:23 te hardloop sit nie in enige ou se skoene nie, maar ons gaan saam met Bronwyn droom – en ons gaan hom ondersteun so ver ons kan,” sê sy. Talle van hul vriende en mede-atlete dra reeds by tot sy atletiekonkostes. “Danksy ons ondersteuners kan ons vir Bronwyn help. “Ons waardeer elke skenking wat van ons donateurs kom,” het sy gesê. Hulle benodig fondse vir inskrywings aan wedlope, asook die regte toerusting om sy droom te bewaarheid. The memory of Paul Ngama, car guard extraordinaire, was honoured by at least 200 Bellville residents at a heart-wrenching candle-light vigil last Thursday. Visitors braved the cold and wet to light their candles on the lawns of the Collective Arts Theatre from 19:00 under an overcast sky, but with the full moon peeping through every so often. A simple table with its black cloth, Paul’s photo and some soft lights shining on it, were dedicated to the memory of Bellville’s Gentle Giant, as Paul was known to locals. Resident Wanda Gildenhuys arranged the vigil in three days after she learned of Paul’s untimely death in the parking lot of the OK Foods and Spur in Boston/Oakdale, where he worked. Paul died of a suspected heart attack while helping a customer reverse out of the parking, on Saturday 10 September. “I made the arrangements for the candlelight memorial for Paul. Nothing, however, could have prepared me for the absolute overwhelming feeling of love, respect and compassion of the Boston and Oakdale communities,” she said. “I don’t think in my lifetime that I’ll ever experience something like that. Nimb’s children grew up in front of Paul and referred to him as “Uncle Paul”, she said fondly. “My eldest son recently bought a car and Paul was one of the first to congratulate him about this,” she said. Paul’s son, Marc, thanked the public for their show of support and his daughter, Es-

ther, said their father had raised them on the Scripture. “One of his favourite passages was the one in Ephesians 6, verses one to four: ‘Children should honour their parents and they will have a long life’. He never beat us; he simply recited this when we were in the wrong!” she remembered lovingly. Youngest son, Peniel, said his father had been happy. “I could never be a car guard. But he was and it made him happy.” Paul was remembered among the visitors present for always helping with little children, looking after cars with passion, always being on his post without complaint, sharing wisdom and his love of life, God and his family. “I have never, never seen the community come together like this,” said Duncan Johnson, one of the visitors. Andrew MacMillan, owner of the Spur restaurant where Paul worked in the parking area, offered coffee to the community after the service. “We didn’t see this coming. Paul’s death is a huge loss for everyone,” he said. A box will be made available to the public in the restaurant for donations to the family, MacMillan said. V Did you know Paul or attend his vigil? Call to add some colour at children’s ward A creative initiative will see the beautification of the paediatric ward at Karl Bremer Hospital this coming weekend (24 and 25 September) and the community is invited to become part of this project. “Whether it’s an artistic hand painting a mural, volunteers to aid with prepping the walls beforehand, assisting the artists in whichever way necessary or contributing by way of donations for materials or food, any help will be greatly appreciated,” says artist Chris Lategan. In June 2014 Chris, an art director in the local film industry, was in Tygerberg Hospital recovering from life-saving surgery to remove a brain tumour which rendered him blind as it increased in size. Upon regaining his sight and relishing the gift of being able to see again, he was saddened by the dreary appearance of the walls in the children’s ward. “Where one would most expect to see an uplifting and cheerful collection of visuals, was instead a display of walls in various stages

of deterioration and completely bare of any pictures at all.” Lategan envisaged a group of artists and artisans working together to give the walls a facelift and posted about it on Facebook. “The response was overwhelming and almost immediately the wheels were set in motion for seeing this unique initiative become a reality,” he says. While preparations were in full swing, Lategan happened along the path of the Daniel and Friends Fund, a non-profit organisation which offers a wide range of support to families who have children with special needs. In November 2015 the Tygerberg Hospital School had its bleak and gloomy entrance transformed into a captivating display of muchloved characters. And now they are going to do the paediatric ward at Karl Bremer Hospital. Daar is soveel ware talent wat ek al raakgesien het – van hulle word dalk bekend, en van hulle nie. “Maar net omdat jy nie bekendheid verwerf het nie, beteken nie jou talent is minderwaardig nie.” Denise sê van die ander hoogtepunte in haar loopbaan is rolle in Forgiveness in 2006, met Ian Gabriel as regisseur, Sexy Girls in 1997 met Russell Thompson as regisseur, en in albei dié flieks is sy as beste ondersteunende aktrise benoem. Internasionaal het sy erkenning verwerf vir The White Lioness in Swede, The Waterbaby in Italië, en sy het die hoofrol gespeel in Shirley Adams onder regie van Oliver Hermanus in 2009. Sy het ook toekennings ontvang as beste aktrise by internasionale filmfeeste in Dubai en Durban in 2009, Grenada in 2010, Festival Khouribga Morocco in 2010 en die Carthrage Film Festival in Tunisië in 2010. Imagine creating a film – from script to finished product – in just 48 hours. Not only did Welgemoed film maker Desmond Denton and his crew pull this off, but they ended up taking home three awards in the process. Their film Infidel, produced as part of the Cape Town 48 Hour Film Project, won the competition’s award for best title sequence, best supporting actress and audience favourite. “It’s an international competition that takes place across the world. It’s been running for the last few years,” Desmond ex-

plains of the 48 Hour Film Project which sees film crews compete locally for a chance to represent their city at Filmapalooza 2017, the competition’s official awards ceremony. Desmond explains that the mad dash film making weekend starts with a draw between 18:00 and 19:00 on the Friday night where teams are given a genre. They are also given a predetermined prop, name and line that has to appear in their film. He points out that his cast and crew of about 50 people, who included stars Amalia Uys, Greg Kriek, Bjorn Walter Steinbach, Auriol Hays, Rudolph Faurie, Storm Barry, Johan Jordaan, Arina Le Roux and Mishka Patel, had to be fully on board before the time without an inkling of what they’d be doing. “They had to trust me blindly.” This also meant being over-prepared with props and costumes for any number of possible themes. “We literally had Boer war costumes for all the actors.” To help save time, Desmond sent team leader Rudolph to the draw in the CBD, while he assembled the crew at their base camp, Sweet Well, in Somerset West. The Infidel team drew the “detective” genre and had to incorporate a spade, a librarian named Sam or Samantha and the line: “I’ve never seen that before.” Rudolph sent the details through and raced back to Sweet Well, while the writing team got cracking on their story from 19:00. The actors were given their scripts at 21:00, before they started filming at 22:00. By 07:00 the next morning the footage was ready for postproduction, which included music by composer Ebrahim Mallum, editing, and of course rendering, which with a 4K film, can take some time. With limited shooting time, the team had to work through the night. They were busy with a scene with Mishka outside at 04:00,

The film has already enjoyed three soldout screenings at Cinema Nouveau, but as many fans haven’t had a chance to see it yet, they’ll be presenting another screening at “the scene of the crime” at Sweet Well restaurant at the end of the month. Desmond says the evening includes a themed dinner and guests will be encouraged to dress up. Desmond is already working on his next project, the opening or proof of concept of Sirkel van Noodlot, a film adaptation of the ST Potgieter novel of the same name. The

book deals with human trafficking and Desmond hopes to turn it into a full-length feature film. He’s also finishing off the pilot for his new apocalyptic television series, Spelonk. Set in a dystopian Cape Town, the series is about “a future we don’t want to see”. The pilot has been shot in Desmond’s home language – Afrikaans – with another version in English. “I want to take South African films international,” he explains. Met die help van die akteurs Hanno Fourie van Parklands, Ilse van Niekerk van Durbanville en Anton Schäfer van Pinelands, gaan Mari die bekende Chris Barnard-toneelstuk Pa, maak vir my ’n vlieër, Pa aanbied. Mari is ’n groot aanhanger van Chris Barnard se werk en toe die Milnerton Players vir haar gevra het om ’n Afrikaanse toneelstuk by hul teater op te voer, het sy teruggekeer na haar eie teks vir Pa, maak vir my ’n vlieër, Pa wat sy vir R1,50 by ’n boekwinkel in Port Elizabeth in 1964 gekoop het. Dit was Barnard se eerste drama wat daardie jaar ook vir die eerste keer gepubliseer is. “Dit is in die absurde genre wat daardie tyd by sommige dramaturge gewild was,” vertel Mari. “Die hele teks het so tot my gespreek en ek het dit nog nooit opgevoer gesien nie.” Alhoewel sy baie tekste gelees het om die uitdaging vir ’n Afrikaanse produksie waar te maak, vertel Mari dat sy oor en oor teruggegaan het na Barnard se stuk. “Dit het hierdie pragtige klimaks op die einde waar die pa sy seun eindelik aanvaar.” Pa, maak vir my ’n vlieër, Pa vertel die storie van ’n enkellopende middeljarge man, sy bejaarde ma wat soms aan demensie ly en ’n jong man wat in hul lewens kom. “Dit is die verlange van die hoofkarakter, Org, wat soek na die betekenis van die lewe, waarom die hele teks tot my gespreek het.” Mari sê dat hierdie soektog na vrede en liefde tipies is van die absurde genre. In dié stuk woon Org en sy ma in ’n armoedige woonstelletjie en sy domineer sy lewe. Maar Org, wat nog nie vrede gevind het met wie hy is nie, verlang om ’n seun te hê. “Dan maak hy stadig op ’n dag kennis met die jong man wat kom besoek aflê en vir hom sê dat hy sy seun is.” Of hy nou wel Org se kind is of nie, of eintlik ’n regte persoon is, is vir die gehoor om te besluit. “Dit is wat my hoendervleis gegee het,” vertel Mari. Die toneelstuk self is heeltemal anders as wat Mari nog aangepak het, en is by tye soms gewelddadig met al die aksie in die storie.

Mari se ma het ook amateurtoneel gespeel en sy’t haar teaterdebuut as klein meisietjie in 1949 saam met Brian Brooke gemaak. Mari onthou tot hoe haar skoolhoof vir haar soms oggende afgegee het by die skool sodat sy repetisies kon bywoon. As ’n 21-jarige vrou het Mari die land met ’n Kombi-bussie in 1958 deurreis toe sy die hoofkarakter in Belinda is doofstom, Andre Huguenet se Afrkaanse vertaling van Elmer Harris se Johnny Belinda, gespeel het. Mari het vir baie jare ook dramaklasse by haar private studio aangebied, maar die hoogtepunt van haar regieloopbaan was toe sy ’n Afrikaanse vertaling van William Gibson se The Miracle Worker, Die wonderwerk, in Port Elizabeth se operahuis aangebied het. In 2008 het Mari Athol Fugard se Sorrows and Rejoicing vir die spelers op die planke gebring voordat sy in 2010 The Road to Mecca aangebied het. Albei die produksies het die beste regisseur- en beste toneelstuk-toekennings by Cata-toekennings gewen. “In dié stuk het ek drie spelers en hulle is soos klei in my hande. ith September being World Alzheimer’s Month and today (Wednesday 21 September) World Alzheimer’s Day, the question is whether lifestyle can prevent Alzheimer’s disease, says Jill Robson, regional manager of the Western Cape office of Alzheimer’s South Africa. “The short answer is no – there is no absolute prevention against the disease. Chloe prepares for world champs STEHAN SCHOEMAN

hloe Rutgers consistently performs at the highest level in karate in South Africa, proving herself time and time again. The 12-year-old De Vrijzee pupil in Goodwood is the TygerBurger Sport Star of the Month winner. She first set foot in a dojo at the age of five. Ever since that day she fell in love with the sport and dedicated her time to training and improving at Karate Zen in Goodwood. Here follows her achievements for the year thus far: • Karate-Zen Open Challenge in February (double gold); • Karate-Zen nationals in March (gold and silver); • S.A Karate Open Challenge in March (double gold); • S.A Karate nationals in July (gold and silver); • Women’s League in August (gold and silver); • Cheetah Challenge in Chloe Rutgers August (double gold, silver and double bronze), and • The Cape Town Open in September (double gold). “I was excited to hear from my mom that

Killarney debut for new GTC series ADRIAN PHEIFFER Multiple former South African champion, Plattekloof’s Johan Fourie, together with 15year-old Joshua Dolinschek, are going to be among those representing the Western Cape in different events during the national Extreme Festival meeting at Killarney on Saturday. The experienced Fourie, a dual winner of the South African Drivers’ Championship, was in action in Port Elizabeth earlier this month where he notched up two secondplace finishes in the Global Touring Car (GTC) events there. However, in a car that was obviously not at its best, he was forced to retire from the third race. Fourie will now be back in action on his home track at Killarney for the first time since 2014, at the wheel of a BMW-M2, in the new GTC championship. A potentially exciting series that is going to be making its Cape debut, the GTC has attracted the country’s best saloon car drivers. The technically evenly-matched cars are rear wheel drive models, that at this early stage also include a selection of Audi A3’s and VW Jettas. All of them are powered by 2-litre turbocharged engines producing 325kW of power and 600 Nm of torque. They also have the same Formula 1 type paddleshift 6-speed gearbox, as well as identical suspensions, shock-absorbers and brakes. And they grip the track with the same Dunlop slick racing tyres The top speed of around 280 km/h is attained quickly, to the accompaniment of loud turbo-crackle and exhaust flames. How-

The five sleek turboprop Pilatus PC7 Mk2s are due to participate in a synchronised aerobatic display above the track for some 25 minutes before the start of the first GTC race.

ith pace setters ensuring the race was quick up front, Asefa Negewo (Ethiopia) made history by breaking the long-standing fastest time set on South African soil over 42.2km, held previously by David Tsebe (2:09:50). Negewo stormed to victory at the prestigious Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on Sunday, in a time of 2:08:42 to lift the men’s crown at the IAAF Silver Label race. The second man home in a field which included top local and international athletes was Emannuel Tirop, who crossed the line in 2:08:47, with Baranabas Kiptum earning third spot in 2:09:21. Meanwhile, Tish Jones won the women’s race in 2:36:13, holding off a challenge from another world-class elite line-up. Mergertu Geletu came second, in 2:36:34, finishing ahead of third-placed athlete and South African Lebogang Phalula, who finished in 2:38:00. “It is great to see such fast times being run on SA soil, which shows how much value a race of this stature brings to the sport at domestic level,” said race ambassador and former world halfmarathon record holder Elana Meyer.
