TOUCHING HEARTS: SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN IN PICTURES
Reality of suffering DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
A
collection of deeply moving photographs reflecting the real life stories of special needs children and their parents, forms the heart of an initiative started by a well-known local paediatrician. The “Touching the Heart” initiative was launched at a gala event held at Val die Vie Polo Club on Youth Day. The paediatrician, Professor Pieter Fourie, who practises from Cape Gate Mediclinic, describes the coffee table book by the same name as just that: a book designed to touch the hearts of people. “We wanted to show the public the reality of what these children go through – what we deal with while treating them, the fear and anxiety they suffer as well as the sorrow and worry their parents have to face on a daily
basis,” he says. Fourie is the chief executive officer of the Daniel and Friends Fund that was started in 2014 to provide support for such children and their parents. This non-profit organisation is the legacy of little Daniel le Roux (3) who passed away after a brave fight against the incurable Leigh’s syndrome in 2013. When he suddenly stopped breathing in September 2012, doctors prepared his parents for the worst and emphasised that there was no hope. “There was one doctor who gave us hope,” says Daniel’s mother, Lianie le Roux, about meeting with Fourie. “He was that someone that we were looking for, someone that did not give up and was willing to fight with us for Daniel’s life.” Fourie heard about a new “wonder” drug from the USA that was being developed and
tested on children, specifically for Leigh’s syndrome. The company approved the use of EPI 743 on compassionate grounds and Daniël was started on it immediately. “Slowly but surely he started getting better and we were overjoyed. There were lots of setbacks, infections with multi-resistant organisms, and an emergency operation on Christmas Eve that nearly cost him his life, but Daniël kept on fighting, with a smile on his face,” says Le Roux. But despite this improvement Daniel fell ill with bronchitis on 22 August 2013 and was admitted to hospital for treatment, where he unexpectedly died the next day. The Daniel and Friends Fund came into being after Fourie challenged a broken hearted Lianie and two other mothers in the same position to make a difference. Nicky de Beer’s son Sam suffers from Rubinstein-Taubi syndrome, cerebral palsy
and autism, while Kate Laurie has two disabled children, Marielé and Liza. They both suffer from Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome. Marielé died exactly one week before Daniel, also due to complications of her syndrome. “As a parent of a special needs child, we realised how big the need was,”says Le Roux. “There is very little support, and you feel alone and isolated. You sometimes just want to talk to someone that is in the same situation that you are. Your family and friends go on with their ‘normal’ lives and it feels like you are being left behind. Because no one that is not in that situation can understand what it really is about. The feeling of being utterly alone, the thousand emotions in one day … the fear of literally holding your child’s life in your hands.” V To page 2.

FROM PAGE 1 Since its inception the organisation has supported 76 families countrywide and even reached beyond the borders of South Africa while supporting a Dutch family who had to bring their severely disabled son Victor Goosen to Cape Town for life saving surgery earlier this year. “It is so easy to forget that there is a person in a disabled body – a child with feelings,” says Le Roux. “A disabled child cannot talk for themselves. You as a parent must be their voice. But to be able to do that, you have to be strong and have the necessary support and knowledge.” These three women, referred to by Fourie as the A Team, dreams to form a stronger, more intimate special needs community. Joining forces with Daniel and Friends on Touching the Heart, is Luanie Oosthuizen and her non-profit organisation called I Am Special Ministries, based in Durbanville. Over the last few years Oosthuizen – whose son also had cancer – has dedicated herself to equipping children in predominantly underprivileged communities such as Bloekombos and Wallacedene with foundation skills in self-confidence. With the proceeds of the book, which is set to be published early next year, both the NPOs hope to better the lives of children
with special needs. The first Touching the Heart project in planning is a complete renovation of the Tygerberg Hospital children’s oncology unit. “We want to buy new linen and curtains, redo the floors and bathrooms and give the ward a new coat of paint. In its current state the ward is horrific and these kids deserve so much more,” says Oosthuizen, who is raising funds for this mammoth task. When completed, the book will contain some 70 pictures taken at the Tygerberg Hospital and several Professor Pieter other paediatric wards across Cape Town. “The pictures taken by Brackenfell photographer Candice Rodriques are truly moving and captures the heart and soul of the entire project,” says Oosthuizen. The book will contain 14 chapters, with each chapter displaying photographs from each individual section within the paediatric hospital’s population, covering topics such as new-borns, toddlers, oncology, cour-

age, parents, unsung heroes, hope and letting go. For Rodriques herself, the journey has been an emotional one. “I’ve been working on the project since December last year and it was very touching to see how these children are treated. The shoots were emotional in nature and resulted in photos that provide an insight into what parent and child endure during their treatment, as well as the extensive demands on those responsible for their care,” says Rodriques. “In a certain way I became attached to each child I photo-
graphed.” Daniel and Friends Fund and I am Special has further committed to running a Touching the Heart project together once a year. “It will be aimed to make a difference in children’s lives … touching the heart and souls of children and adults,” Le Roux concluded. Thieves eye security complexes DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
Living in a security complex does not make you immune to crime. This was again illustrated by a surge in theft out of motor vehicles in security complexes in Brackenfell. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Erica Crouse they noted an escalation of this crime since the beginning of June. “We urge the community to sharpen up safety measures with regard to their motor vehicles,” she says. “We found that residents of security complexes still leave their vehicles unlocked or leave valuable items such as sunglasses, car radios, laptops, cell phones or GPS systems in their vehicles. Some even leave windows open.” Complexes such as Georgian Palms and Wilgenhof were among those targeted in June, and according to Crouse in at least four of the cases reported here negligence on the part of the owner played a role. “If there is nothing of value to steal in your car, your chances of becoming a victim are drastically minimised,” she concluded.

ith winter in full swing, The Haven Shelter for homeless in Kraaifontein is filled to capacity. Sixteen years after opening its doors, this shelter remains the only overnight shelter for the homeless in the Kraaifontein, Brackenfell and Kuils River areas. “Every single bed we have is occupied every night during the winter months, but even so we cannot turn away anyone who comes to our door at night. It’s cold out there and even if we can provide them with only a few blankets and a dry warm place to sleep, a shower and a breakfast, that is the least we can do,” says supervisor Elizabeth Mentoor. According to Mentoor many homeless prefer sleeping outside during the summer months. “In here they are not allowed to drink and they know it all too well. But it gets so cold during the winter months that they are left with no choice but to knock on our doors. On very cold and wet nights the homeless stream in from afar.” Very few of the current permanent residents are employable and even fewer have actual jobs according to Mentoor. Thirty six men and 16 women currently live at The Haven. “But like everyone else they do aspire to have a place of their own to call home. We do what we can for those residents working to get out of here eventually, but for the majority we can provide only a basic shelter, a place to shower, sleep, and eat.” Being the only shelter in Oostenberg, The Haven is continuously in need of donations. “Being winter we always need more blankets, pillows, food parcels ... and money.” Heeding the call, the MK1 Crew, a group of young car enthusiasts who “adopted” The

A burning truck on the N1 caused quite a spectacle last week. At about 07:30 on Wednesday 22 June, a truck loaded with dog food caught fire and burned out between the Okavango Road and Brighton Road off-ramps. “The fire was caused by overheating brakes that ignited the tyres and surrounding materials,” said Theo Layne, spokesperson of the City’s Fire and Rescue services. According to eye witness accounts, the driver managed to safely steer the truck off the road and unlink it from the trailer, before it burst into flames. One trailer containing bags of dog food was destroyed by heat, smoke, fire and water. No-one was injured in the incident. Traffic was affected until about 11:00.

ibrary users in Kraaifontein will now be able to use up to 100MB of data per day at two of the suburb’s libraries – thanks to new wireless internet hotspots. These WiFi hotspots, unveiled last week at both the Scottsdene and Kraaifontein central libraries, augment the existing SmartCape facility that provides free internet on limited portals inside the library. “The days when libraries were just a place to borrow books have faded and are being replaced by somewhat of a one-stop information hub. The library of the 21st century is a place where residents can share ideas, access job and business opportunities online and engage in lifelong learning. It is important that we continue to maintain and upgrade our libraries so that they remain relevant in our everchanging world,” says Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for corporate services. She visited both these libraries on Wednesday 22 June to demonstrate how easy it is to connect to the service via a laptop. “Our aim was to connect residents to learning resources. An investment in the education of our children is an investment in the future of our country and by providing access to quality learning materials and outher resources, we are placing young and old on a path to success.” Because it is a free service, time allocated per person will be limited to ensure that as many people as possible and new internet users are given the opportunity to use the web. Limberg says the WiFi service was provided by using the City’s existing network

PHOTO: DESIRÉE RORKE infrastructure. “This method ensures much better value for money than paying very high costs to outsource the service. All of this has been achieved with a minimal capital budget of R5 million for each of the last two years,” she said. A further 30 WiFi zones are planned to go live by the end of June this year – one at Brackenfell Library – and about 60 more in the following financial year, bringing the total to 201 hotspots city
wide. Limberg said the City has a capital budget of R218 million for its Broadband Network Roll-out Project for the current financial year. “To date, an amount of R33 million has been spent on rolling out a wireless network. A large portion of the budget has been dedicated to installing fibre-optic cables and switching capacity in a number of areas where there was previously no broadband infrastructure,” she says.

H
oping to put in place an action plan to successfully address the ongoing issues at the Brackenfell train station, the City of Cape Town called for a meeting that took place on Monday (27 June). The media, however, was barred from this meeting on the premise that “the various parties have to be given an opportunity to deal with the issue frankly and without undue influence”, according to the City. “We are hoping that this meeting will provide an action plan that can be successfully implemented to deal with the concerns around the station once and for all, including the presence of illegal occupants,” said Mayco member for health, Siyabulela Mamkeli. Roleplayers invited include City Health, Law Enforcement, Railway Police, the neighbourhood watch and the ratepayers’ association. TygerBurger last week insisted on attending this meeting after disputing the City’s
answers on recent media enquiries. On Monday 30 May the City issued a final notice to Transnet to clean up the premises advising them that failing to do so would result in the City contracting a cleaning company at Transnet’s cost. The City insists that a follow-up inspection was done on Monday 6 June and found that Transnet had adhered to the requirements of the notice. However, during a visit to the station on Monday 13 June, TygerBurger found the station to be in a horrid condition. In one spot the rubbish was layered between the fence and the station grounds appearing not to have been cleaned in weeks. Even the trees are littered with junk. TygerBurger requested to accompany a City health inspector to the station to point out these areas, but was again denied. Mamkeli said the concerns at the station are of an ongoing nature and that City Health and Law Enforcement continue to engage Transnet on this. TygerBurger requested a full report on the meeting and was assured by the City that they would provide feedback.

Positive impact, but ... On enquiry, Martin ten Brink, regional community development manager of ADT Security, said: “Since its launch in 2013, the Northern Suburbs Information Centre has made a positive impact on the safety of people in the northern suburbs. It links strategically located LPR cameras with an information centre in the Durbanville business area, from where more than 1200 neighbourhood watch radios are also linked to community watches, security companies, schools and churches and different police stations. “ADT sponsors and acts as the custodian of the information centre and encourages all security role-players to link to the network. Unfortunately ADT received numerous complaints from residents and other security role-players that CDF had been using the radio network to solicit business. We raised this with CDF repeatedly and asked that they stop using the network to solicit business, but this continued and ADT was compelled to ask CDF to leave the network. CDF has since apologised in writing and we are in the process of reviewing their future inclusion,” he said. However, Charl Jacobs, CEO of CDF and a resident of Durbanville for 20 years, says this is not all true. “We applied for neighbourhood watch radios in June last year, but were then instructed to become members of the Durbanville Community Policing Forum (CPF) first. Apology According to Jacobs it was then minuted on 21 January at a neighbourhood watch meeting, where they were not present, that if they apologise, they will be linked up to the radio network again. On 27 January they received a mail from ADT’s legal department stating that they have been disconnected from the radio network, because their employees were responding to emergencies logged by the DCI and were recruiting clients. “We did our own internal investigation and found these allegations to be untrue,” Jacobs said. “ADT’s attorneys responded by claiming that we are approaching their clients and asking them how much they are paying and then stating we can beat their price. We obviously replied that pricing structures are part and parcel of free trade and that we have a fixed costing structure across the board, so once again their reluctance to have us as part of the radio network was unfounded. “We continued our attempts to resolve the issue long after receiving attorney letters. Our last communication requesting a meeting was on 25 February, but Patrick Hall from ADT replied eight days later stating that he will not meet as the matter is with their legal department. “Several attempts were made to meet with Hall. I personally invited him to meet and he refused to do so, stating it was with ADT’s legal department. “A letter of apology was written to ADT on 4 May, addressed to Hall , but to date we haven’t received a reply from ADT or their legal department,” he said. But, said Jacobs, CDF clients and the Durbanville community can soon be looking forward to another free radio network, control room and an ambulance service. “CDF has been met with great resistance from ADT. Their reluctance to have us as part of the network is irresponsible towards the community we serve and they are literally putting people’s lives in danger in their attempt to ‘handicap’ our operations and our growth.”

he wires between the Durbanville Camera Initiative (DCI) and a newcomer on the security scene in Durbanville seem to be crossed. So crossed that it may result in another free radio network in Durbanville. This came after the DCI discontinued the radio contact of the security company Corporate Defence Force (CDF), which was founded in May last year, due to “misconduct”. The conflict came under the attention of TygerBurger when a resident in Eversdal complained about it. “As a CDF client I am concerned that they will not get to us in time in case of an emergency. Some people speculate that ADT, who operates the radio network, is sour because CDF recruits new clients every day. “CDF delivers a service that the others don’t. For them it is about service delivery, but for the others it’s only about business and how many clients they can recruit. Taking them off the radio network is a safety concern to us,” she said.
membership was sent to ADT and DCI on 21 June 2015, but we only received our radios from DCI in September last year – three months later,” Jacobs said. “Then, on 20 January 2016, it was decided at a DCI meeting that CDF’s radio link will be cut and it was then cut without any official notification. It took ADT three months to connect us to the radio network, but one day to cut us. We purchased these radios and therefore have the right to receive notification if they will be disconnected,” he said.

viate traffic congestion on the other suburban roads in the Durbanville area and cater for the increased demand for road space due to rapid development to the north,” he says. Furthermore, these new sections will provide residents with improved access to residential and commercial areas, as well as to schools. “The new sections will provide motorists with a more direct route between Durbanville and the N1 freeway. It will divert a significant volume of traffic from Tygerberg Valley and Van Riebeeckshof roads. “In fact, once the extension is completed, the travel distance between Van Riebeeckshof and St John roads will be shortened by nearly two kilometres,” says Herron. New traffic signals will be installed at the intersection of Jip de Jager Drive and Tygerberg Valley Road, and at the intersection of Jip de Jager Drive and Racecourse Road. “The new northern and southern sections of Jip de Jager Drive will be a single carriageway. However, the intersections are designed to accommodate a dual carriageway in future. “Apart from a universally accessible walkway and street lighting on one side of the road, the project also provides for cycle lanes on the shoulders of the new sections of Jip de Jager Drive,” he says. Even though traffic should not be severely affected by the roadworks, TCT anticipates some disruptions along Racecourse and Tygerberg Valley roads, but only a few months down the line when the construction has reached an advanced stage. “Any lane closures to accommodate the roadworks will be limited to off-peak periods as far as possible. The construction period is about 14 months, if all goes according to plan,” says Herron.

his week construction is finally underway in an attempt to relieve traffic congestion in Durbanville and make provision for the rapid development in the north. Transport for Cape Town will spend approximately R64 million on the extension of Jip de Jager Drive in Durbanville. The northern section of Jip de Jager Drive currently ends a few hundred metres after the intersection with Van Riebeeckshof Road. The City will now embark on construction work to extend Jip de Jager Drive all the way to Racecourse Road, also known as the M13, in Durbanville. According to Brett Herron, Mayco member for Transport for Cape Town (TCT), the contractor will be on site this week. “People may not notice any physical construction work during the first few days as the contractor must prepare the site and set up a base camp,” he says. The base camp typically consists of temporary offices from where the site manager and engineers will work, as well as changing rooms for the employees working on site and sanitation facilities, he said. The extension of Jip de Jager Drive is part of the City’s Congestion Management Programme, which dictates how TCT, the City’s transport authority, will spend an additional R750 million over a period of five years for road infrastructure projects to alleviate the major pressure points in the city. According to Herron the new sections will add an additional 1,7km to the existing Jip de Jager Drive. “Once completed, the new road will alle-

THINKING OUT LOUD
Teach young ones to fall in love
I sat upright with my legs dangling over the edge of the seat, my tiny hands fidgeted in anticipation. The lights went down, the curtains opened, the action started … and I was in love. I must have been about six or seven years old when my Oumie took me to see my first theatre production. In those days options were limited, but every school holiday my gran would drive me off to The Baxter Theatre to see the latest children’s piece. It was the beginning of a long and very beneficial love affair. You see, my love of theatre opened a whole new world to me. I have travelled to prohibition-era American prison cells in Chicago, to Paris with Phantom of the Opera, to exotic Africa with Postcard from Morocco, experienced Russian folklore with Swan Lake and 15th Century England with Shakespeare’s Richard III. The theatre unlocked my imagination and The theatre introduced me to a world of fantasy unlocked my that allowed me to stories, imagination experience music and beautiful imagery that would and intro often stay with me duced me to a long after I left the venue. world of fan But, sometimes when I speak to tasy ... people, I realise that many still see the theatre as an exclusive experience, despite the fact that the vibrant arts culture in Cape Town lends itself to far more inclusivity than ever before. This winter school holiday, for example, sees a great number of children’s theatre productions on offer around Cape Town. Then there’s all the community theatre initiatives going on around the northern suburbs – from the Milnerton Players to the youth-driven Project 021. And, if theatre isn’t your thing, the stand-up comedy and magic industries are both on the rise. Add the huge number of live music events in TygerBurger’s weekly “What’s On” diary and Capetonians really are spoilt for choice when it comes to entertainment – even during the traditionally quiet winter months. A wise producer once told me that audiences need to be developed. We need to expose young audiences to the stage in order to cultivate theatre-going adults. So, why not take a child to the theatre this holiday? You might just prompt a life-long love affair. – Louisa Steyl

Chemicals in food far worse Peter Smulik puts two questions concerning the operation of nuclear power stations (“Ignorance over nuclear tech”, TB, 22 June). One, insurance cover in the event of a release of nuclear particles due to an uncontrolled event, accident, or an operating error due to staff incompetence or construction errors. At Chernobyl it was staff doing procedures in an unsafe reactor, and at Winscale, sensors wrongly positioned, resulting in a fire in the graphite reactor core. That type of fire in graphite becomes self sustaining. The Japanese event was caused by a natural event, which caused the flooding of the cooling pump emergency diesel generators, as the normal power for them had been lost with the destruction of the normal grid supplied by turbo-alternators. With regard to the insurance for such an event, and claims by the nearby and affected residents, he should attend the Public Safety Information Forum, which will supply him with the information required. These he can extend to cover the demolition of the power plant, when its useful life has finally expired. He can also request for specialist speakers to lecture on such subjects. If Eskom can find such a willing person, then he can be asked. What he should bear in mind, is that he should be more afraid of what is happening to our food than from nuclear waste (a personal comment!). We have a situation in a small community up the West Coast, where the prediabetic and diabetic incidence is one person in
three. At the turn of the century – 1800s to 1900s – the world wide cancer incidence was one person in every one hundred and fifty. Now it is one in five. Why? Traces of the active chemical in the herbicide Round Up are now being found in the cotton wool used in female hygiene products, made of cotton from genetically modified cotton plants. Perhaps the human seed should be genetically modified to accept Round Up and the insecticide BT? This genetic modifying of plant material is not done to improve the nutritional value of the plant, but to make it immune to the application of definitive herbicides or insecticides. The insecticide BT is also put into the genetic make-up of the plant. We, the populus, are pursuaded to eat this evilly contrived junk in the interests of “worldwide food sustainability”. Great lobbying phrase used on governments ... We have already had DDT, Thalidymide, and various other evil chemicals banned. Some, although banned, are still being used! It seems we are being committed to a chemical death and not a nuclear one! Nuclear waste degenerates, but hard chemicals do not! The pebble bed reactor burned up nuclear waste as does the latest version of the nuclear salt reactor. Both are 1950s technology. Google Trans Atomic Power for the latest design of the nuclear salt reactor. The PSIF is set up for the residents in the 5km and 16km evacuation zones. But outsiders are more than welcome. We have had all sorts of interesting visitors, local residents, to an ex-nuclear submarine nuclear engineer, to me, who had been involved in the first nuclear power stations built in the UK,
albeit in a nut and bolt tightening capacity. MIKE MEYRICK E-mail

My eie brief is aanvanklik geplaas: “Lemoenduifies se vrektes ontstel”, 4 Mei.
ANONIEM Boston
It’s an eyesore, but much appreciated I thought I might comment on the new fence that is being put up for the parking lot in front of the Durbanville municipal building. While it is an eye sore, it seems necessary as my car was tampered with last week when I parked it there for an hour. The door lock was forced but luckily not opened. It is a shame that a large fence now has to be built to keep crime out of the lot, but I appreciate the effort made to make it a safer place to park. ANDRE CRAYE Goedemoed

Winter school for struggling learners W
ith the advent of the winter school holiday, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will once again offer holiday programmes, which will include Safe Schools Holiday Programmes as well as Winter Schools for Grade 12s. “The aim of the safe schools holiday programme includes providing constructive activities for children while also protecting schools by ensuring that they are visibly utilised during this period. The programmes are aimed at keeping our children positively engaged, entertained and safe, especially in areas where they are at a greater risk of exposure to substance abuse, drugs, violence and gangsterism,” explains provincial education minister, Debbie Schäfer. Each district organises programmes according to the perceived need in the district concerned. Educational programmes on offer include topics such as peer pressure, moral values, substance abuse, HIV/Aids and sexual abuse. Other important topics covered are truancy, gangsterism and bullying as well as career guidance. A special programme has been designed which addresses sexual abuse, gender inequality and gender based violence. Fun activities include hiking, kayaking, board games, arts and crafts as well as drama and dance classes. For more information on the Safe Schools Holiday Programme, parents can contact their child’s school or their nearest district office.
Winter school Providing curriculum support to Grade 12 learners is always a priority, particularly in schools where learners are struggling in
specific subjects. “The WCED has organised holiday study programmes at a number of our high schools. The winter schools aim to assist learners in high enrolment subjects such as mathematics, physical science, geography, life sciences, accounting and economics,” she says. Many of the programmes on offer will be taught by tutors selected by the WCED. “In some schools, curriculum advisors will be supporting and assisting individual school programmes. Additional resource materials have been developed to complement the lessons being presented.” The dates of each school’s programme differ. Some schools have offered programmes on specific days, while others offer theirs throughout the holiday period.
Safe schools Schäfer urges communities to help their schools by reporting any suspicious behaviour in and around schools to the police immediately. “While we are pleased that we have been able to offer safe school programmes at schools across the province, we cannot compensate for the role that responsible, committed parents must play in the lives of their children. That is the bedrock of a functional society and we call on parents to take responsibility for their children’s safety during the school holiday period and ensure they are kept off the streets and away from alcohol, drugs and gangs,” says Schäfer. V For more information on the Grade 12 Holiday Programme, parents can contact their child’s school or their nearest district office.

Winter is the ideal time to adopt a cat, says Jennifer Davies of Fisantekraal Animal Welfare. “When you bring a new cat home, you initially need to keep them indoors for at least two weeks before you can let them out. New cats tend to ‘run away’ – not because they don’t like you, but because change greatly unsettles cats, especially change in ‘territory’. They also want to explore their new surroundings and then can’t find their way back,” she says. “After the first weeks, one would let them out into the rest of the house, without letting them outdoors, and then, over several days or weeks, get them used to a wider area until you eventually let them outdoors,” she advises. The FAW has several beautiful, friendly felines looking for warm, happy homes. All adult cats have an adoption fee of R350. They are microchipped, dewormed, vaccinated, and sterilised. A home-check is required. V Contact FAW by email to adoptions@faw.za.org or on 079 173 8260.

Sing om mense te bekeer MARITA MEYER
H
“Nou’s ek happy met albei – of ek nou sing of preek.
Ek was dadelik sober en by my verstand en het net daar my hart vir God gegee. Sy debuutalbum is beskikbaar by alle CUM-boekwinkels of by die De Bron-kerk. Dit kan ook digitaal afgelaai word by www.henrypike.co.za.

Floating books help spread hope CARINA ROUX
T
he world’s largest floating book fair, the MV Logos Hope, docked in Cape Town harbour last Thursday just in time for the school holiday and will be open for visitors daily until Monday 11 July. With over 5000 book titles at affordable prices covering science, hobbies, cooking, arts, travel, languages, religion, medicine – you name it – there is something for everyone. In addition there is a visitors’ deck to explore with some interactive displays and various on-board events. The Logos Hope, owned by GBA Ships, a German registered non-profit organisation, sails across the globe with the purpose of bringing “Knowledge, Help and Hope” to the nations of the world. Part of their vision is to promote peace by embracing diversity, and as Capetonian Neil Meiring can attest, it can be a challenge when you are part of a crew of 400 members from over 50 different nations. After 16 months on board, the former car
mechanic from Kensington says “it’s the best experience” he has ever had. Neil felt led by the Lord to quit his job, not sure what the next step would be. Soon afterwards he heard about the Logos Hope through an OM Ministries outreach at the Strewers church in Kensington. “I didn’t want to do it. I tried everything to get out of it, but it was like the Lord kept telling me this is what I should do.” The crew and staff are all non-salaried volunteers, with many working in their professional capacity. Neil started out in the galley and worked his way to the engine room. Since the 1970s the fleet of GBA ships has been welcomed in over 500 ports in more than 160 countries as the ship provides good educational literature and promotes unity in diversity. V The Logos Hope is at Jetty 2 at the V&A Waterfront until Monday 11 July. Opening hours are from 14:00 to 21:30 Sunday to Tuesday, and from 10:00 to 21:30 Wednesday to Saturday. Entrance is R5 for adults, and free for pensioners and children under 12 (accompanied by a parent).

Gavin at Gospel Skouspel LOUISA STEYL @lousteyl
C
apetonians will soon get a chance to see The Voice SA star Gavin Edwards in the flesh. With his inspirational message, Gavin, the runner-up of the national singing competition, has been chosen to join some of South Africa’s top Christian singers on this year’s Gospel Skouspel stage. He’ll be joining Juanita du Plessis, Elvis Blue, Joe Niemand, Retief Burger and Corlea among others at the GrandWest Grand Arena on Saturday 3 September for radio station Tygerberg 104fm’s tenth and biggest gospel spectacular. Gavin, who used to live in Durbanville, says he jumped at the opportunity when he was invited to perform at the show. “I’m very religious and my mom has been in the ministry for my whole life,” he says, adding: “It would be amazing to be given the chance to stand up there and sing for God and everyone.” While Gavin is currently riding The Voice SA wave, he’s no stranger to musical success and his road to the competition was a winding one. When he first spoke to TygerBurger in 2012, he was visiting South Africa between working with his band Sunshine State in Australia. This was after a chance meeting with Brain McFadden from Westlife saw Gavin moving to Ireland for nine years and later travelling the world to work with songwiters such as Billy Mann, who writes for Pink and Phil Thornalley, the writer of Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”. He decided to move back to South Africa permanently soon after meeting his wife while here for a holiday.
Gavin Edwards will be at this year’s Gospel Skouspel. “I was away for years and just couldn’t be away from family anymore”. Since then he’s been busy with cover shows in Johannesburg where the couple have made their home. He also took the seventh place in the X Factor SA competition in 2014. In-between all of this, Gavin was fighting a personal battle though. The singer and songwriter has been open about his struggle with alcohol dependency since the start of The Voice SA. “When it started to affect my mood on
stage and just mood in general, I knew it was time [to change] because I love music,” Gavin explains. “I wanted to take back control of my career and voice – and moods and alcohol were just getting in the way of that.” He says, in the end, it was his desire to sing and play music that switched off his urge for alcohol. “I still deal with some anxiety and stage fright,” he says jokingly, “but the point is to face these things sober and overcome them instead of having a drink to avoid it or run from it.” Gavin decided to enter The Voice SA after watching an overseas version of the show. “I just knew it was a show that gave artists or talent the ability and platform to showcase who they are as an artist.” He says the competition, which sees contestants working with a mentor, also nurtures talent and teaches artists about the business side of the entertainment industry. “What an unforgettable, amazing learning experience. I will tell any singer I know that if you want to learn, grow and be taken seriously, to enter – it’ll change your life.” Gavin has been busy in studio working on a single due to be released in July. He also plans to start work on a full album, but first Gavin and his wife are preparing to welcome their baby boy soon. Fans will be able to see him in action at the Gospel Skouspel 2016 on Saturday 3 September, which is pegged to be the biggest gospel event of the year. V Tickets for the Gospel Skouspel 2016 are available from www.itickets.co.za. Visit the Gospel Skouspel Facebook page for the full concert lineup and more information.

Blisters for Bread entries open Your R50 entry fee for this year’s Blisters for Bread, will provide a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch to 25 underprivileged school children. Blisters for Bread, which was started in 1968 by staff and pupils at Savio College in Lansdowne and handed over to the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) to manage, had over 11 500 entries last year. The event raised R579 700, enabling PSFA to provide 1468 hungry children with meals for one year. This charity family fun walk, taking place at the Green Point Cricket Club on Sunday 28 August, serves as an annual fundraising event for PSFA. This year there will be two routes along the Sea Point Promenade – a 10km walk that starts at 07:30 and a 5km walk that starts at 08:00. Entries can be done online at www. psfa.org.za. The closing date for groups and manual entries is Sunday 7 August and Wednesday 17 August for online entries.

Children given free eyewear The Italian eyewear company Falco Milano, which boasts an amazing collection of sunglasses and eyewear, also believes in “giving back”. The company has partnered with Jonga Trust, an NGO which operates in Khayelitsha and hosts eye clinics in the area where they screen children from underprivileged schools and supply them with glasses if needed. More than a 1000 glasses have recently been donated, and more will follow. Falco Milano has opened five branches in Cape Town over the past few months and is planning to open ten more in Gaut-
eng before the end of the year. The owners, Yehuda Halperin and Daniel Yakcobi, have a heart for charity and feel strongly about CSI projects, especially where children are involved. “These kids are the future,” says Daniel. “By adopting them and giving them a chance to see better and in turn read better, they will get a better education,” he says. For every pair of sunglasses bought, Falco Milano donates another one to charity. V Falco Milano stores can be found in Tyger Valley, Canal Walk, CapeGate, Cavendish and N1 City.
Steven Hall completes the full Ironman (3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run) in Port Elizabeth on 10 April.

Steven’s journey of many breaths CARINA ROUX
B
reathe in, breathe out … a simple action mostly taken for granted. One might be expected to be slightly out of breath when you cross the finish line of your first marathon (42,2km); even more so if you started off with a 3.8km swim, followed by 180km on a bicycle. But for Steven Hall from De Bron, completing the gruelling Ironman triathlon in Port Elizabeth in April was a highlight in a journey “to pay things forward”. “I’m very grateful that I have the physical ability to take part in an Ironman event as well as taking for granted that I can breathe unaided each day – and I do this for those who can’t.” Steven is a man on a mission to create awareness for the Breatheasy Programme, a unique initiative from the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. “When a child needs ventilation assistance, the government will cover the costs while they are in hospital, but not when they leave the hospital. So up until now these children would have to spend years in hospital until they are eventually weaned off the tracheostomy because of the specialist care needed,” says Steven. The Breatheasy Programme trains the parents to be able to look after their children so that they can return home and lead as normal a life as possible. “So there is one thing training the parents, but most of these kids need specialist equipment to assist them to breathe. Some of this equipment could cost up to R107 000 for one child. My efforts to raise funds and awareness is specifically aimed at raising the money for the necessary equipment – something our state does not cover.” Steven’s journey started when his mother passed away in May 2015 after spending over 100 days in a UK hospital – most of them in an ICU ward with a tracheostomy in place. She went into hospital just days after her 68th birthday to have a (cancerous) lump removed from her lung. The operation was a success but (she) ended up picking up a hospital bug while in recovery. “I went to visit my mom in hospital in March/April (2015) on the advice of the doctors. She woke out of her coma while I was there, but drifted back a day before I was meant to go home. She was able to speak a few words to me through a trachea mask that they would put on for about 10 minutes every day. It was spending time with her in the hospital that I was appreciative of the
great (free) care that she was given that I decided I wanted to give something back.” With his mom’s condition neither improving nor worsening, Steven returned to SA, until he received a call mid-May from the doctors saying that they thought they have reached the end of the road. “On 18 May they switched the machines off and on the early morning of 19 May she passed away peacefully.’’ In between his two visits to the UK he came across the Breatheasy Programme via Twitter and thought it was perfect. He contacted Sister Jane Booth of the Red Cross Hospital that runs the programme. “I went to visit her, told her of my mother in hospital, and that I wanted to help. I wasn’t sure what kind of impact I could make, but believed that a drop in the ocean could cause a ripple.” Steven started jogging a few years ago and has completed a few half marathons, but considered himself a back of the pack athlete. At the end of 2014 he joined the Wingman Triathlon group and in January 2015 finished the Half Ironman in East London. “This was the biggest endurance event that I had ever done and pretty much ticked off the bucket list. It was meant to be a onceoff event.” But after his mother’s passing and meeting with Booth, he decided that the best way he could raise funds and create awareness was through his sport. His employer, Old Mutual started a campaign, More than Yourself, through which he set up a fundraising page. Under Wingman coach David Sullivan’s guidance they set up a plan to complete the full Ironman. “When the training got tough, I would remind myself why I was doing this. It was for more than myself.” Between August 2015 and 10 April (when Ironman was held) Steven ran over 760km, cycled over 5250km and swam over 120km. So far, his fundraising page has raised almost R30 000. “By raising funds we can contribute to improving the quality of life for these children and help them lead the normal life that they deserve. My aim is to raise at least R100 000 to ensure that one child can go home with the necessary breathing apparatus that they need.” Next on the cards is the Cape Town marathon in September and for 2017 Steven has set his aim at the Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (56km) and the Comrades up run on Sunday 4 June, a day after his 40th birthday. The family adventure The BFG opens at SterKinekor Theatres on Friday. Based on the Roald Dahl classic, the film tells the story of Sophie who befriends the BFG, a big friendly giant, whose frightening first impression gives way to his good nature
and kind spirit. Considered an outcast by his peers for not eating children, the two form an unlikely bond and embark on an adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have invaded the human world. V Visit www.sterkinekor.com for more.
Goldilocks on stage A
fter two completely sold-out runs in 2015, The Lilliput Children’s Theatre Company will be performing Goldilocks and the Three Bears again this school holiday. The children’s classic will be staged at the Nassau Theatre at Groote Schuur High School in Palmyra Road, Newlands, at 10:30 from Monday 4 to Saturday 16 July. The play follows the adventure of Goldilocks in the forest before her birthday. Her grandfather is organising a birthday party, but Goldilocks gets lost in the woods and stumbles across a house belonging to the three bears. With nobody home, Goldilocks goes inside and makes herself at home. The three bears come home to find their visitor fast
asleep, with hilarious consequences. This enchanting fairytale classic is full of laughter and audience participation and is great fun for the whole family to enjoy. Goldilocks and the Three Bears is adapted and directed by Elton John Duffy, who has been producing Children’s Theatre and delighting audiences for the past 23 years. This show stars Desle McConney (Athlone) as Goldilocks, Monique Rockman (Elsies River) as Mama Bear, Carmen Maarman (Woodstock) as Baby Bear, Robyn Maree (Plumstead) as Papa Bear and Elton John Duffy (Edgemead) as Grandpa. Women shine in mentorship course ESMÉ ERASMUS
late 2011 and was initially launched at Hillsong Church’s Century City location. “Quite quickly we started running the courses in schools, shelters, correctional facilities and other Hillsong Church locations. One of the many things I love about Shine is that it reaches women from different religions, cultures, ages and demographics.
@erasmusesme
A
group of 20 women from Fisantekraal got trained to believe in and value themselves in the first Hillsong Africa Foundation (HAF) Shine course in Fisantekraal. The eight-week course, which ended last Friday, is a personal development and mentorship programme for women, says Cailin Leacock, head of Shine South Africa at the Hillsong Africa Foundation. After doing a needs assessment in Fisantekraal and identifying that low worth and self-esteem, as well as a lack of purpose and vision, were rampant within the community, Lucinda Valentine, senior managing director at GiveWise, contacted the Hillsong Africa Foundation to present a Shine course in the Fisantekraal community. “Mary Ann Prinsloo and Sandi Ferera, two of our volunteer Shine facilitators, have brilliantly led the team over the last eight weeks.
Internal change “Our team have been encouraged by the response from the women and we are so inspired by how, in such a short time, they have already started to make positive changes in their lives,” says Leacock. “We believe that worth is an internal factor – our worth and value is found from the inside. Once we believe this, we begin to understand that external things should not determine or influence our worth. These external things can include position, occupation, socio-economic status, education, religion and marital status,” she explains. “The focus for these sessions is for each woman to understand, for herself, that they are valuable. Their uniqueness is

Their surnames are not known. something to celebrate and they have been wonderfully made. “These sessions explore the power of choice and the power that decisions have on shaping a someone’s future. We look at convictions, boundaries and respect,” Leacock says. “Purpose is examined through exploring individual hopes, dreams and desires. Goal setting, discussions on potential and talents and practical activities are used to equip and build confidence,” she says. There are three Shine curriculums:
ShineWomen which is targeted at women 18 years and older; ShineGirl for girls between 13 and 18 and ShineHope, which is an international human trafficking prevention programme based on the foundational concepts of worth, strength and purpose. “We work closely with the team at A21, a non-profitable organisation that exists to abolish injustice in the 21st century, in facilitating ShineHope in vulnerable areas,” says Leacock. Shine was founded in South Africa in
Not a religious course “Shine is not a Christian course – it is a programme that empowers women, and this opens the door for us to be able to share the message of value and worth to a greater number of women. “We have realised that there is such a need and hunger for women to know their value and worth. We go into schools, communities, shelters and homes, and for many of the women the affirming and encouraging words spoken to them by our team is often the very first time they are being encouraged and affirmed. “Many women struggle to acknowledge that their life has a purpose and some quite literally break down in tears when they get a revelation of who they really are and how valuable they are. “Shine is just one of many programmes that we present at Hillsong Africa Foundation. Shine is not only making a lasting impact in the lives of the women who attend, but also in the lives of their families too,” she says. “Today we run Shine in multiple communities including Gugulethu and Macassar. Our goal is always to create a welcoming, loving, non-judgmental environment where anyone can come and sit and feel that they belong.” V Contact Cailin Leacock at Shine South Africa on 074 904 0885 for more information.

Learners from Kenridge Primary with Mason and his mom Lisa.
Running for sick boy (3) AVRIL FILLIES On Wednesday 22 June, the Kenridge cross country team hosted their annual charity run at Kenridge Primary to raise funds for three-year-old Mason van Dyk. Mason suffers from a life-threatening skin disorder known as Harlequin Ichthyosis. “He was born with thick plates of skin covering his face and body. His face and eyes were pulled taut and his left hand was deformed. His body rejected his barely formed right hand and auto amputated it,” said Jenny Fisher, organiser of the event. “Mason was not expected to live, but he is a fighter and has just celebrated his third birthday. The
costs to keep Mason comfortable, mobile and healthy are astronomical, and the pupils decided they wanted to dedicate 60 minutes of their time helping him.” In 2011 the cross country captain, Emma Rossouw, initiated this worthy cause by requesting they run to raise funds for people and children who do not have the same freedom of movement they have, and in doing so, giving them a better chance of living more fulfilling lives. The learners from Grade 1 to 7, as well as many of the teachers, came out in their masses and ran up a storm for Mason. Mason was present and loved meeting the children and the attention that was lavished on him. It was a special moment when he
said thank you to all of the runners over the microphone. When asked if he would attend Kenridge Primary one day, just like his mom, Lisa, he became very excited and exclaimed: “Yes!” “The lubrication, eye and ear drops and medication is extremely costly, and the specialists and therapists he needs to see weekly as well. He will probably also have to have a cochlear implant soon. Little Mason is fighting a daily ongoing battle and we, at Kenridge Primary, would like to assist in keeping him comfortable and healthy, and giving him a sporting chance at life itself.” Jenny concluded. V Contact Jenny on 021 976 3046 or at jenny.fisher@kenridge.org.za for more information.

Baie verskuilde rugbytalent onder T’bergers SAREL BURGER
D
Ciara (13) a racing champion
ADRIAN PHEIFFER
T
1100cc. Similar restrictions apply to the transmission, brakes and tyres. The cars’ weight and even their noise levels are restricted. Finally, only pump fuel may be used. Despite that, in her first season in a championship with a driver age limit set from 12 to a mature 18, little Ciara soon became a hard charger who took no prisoners. And although she made mistakes while on a learning curve, she was still able to enjoy a podium spot in every event – so much so that she eventually finished 11 points ahead of the young man in second place. A
he petite Ciara van Niekerk comes across initially as a typical 13-yearold Durbanville schoolgirl. She plays hockey enthusiastically for the Reddam House u.14 team and enjoys TV shows like Pretty Little Liars when she’s not too busy with her studies or homework. The one noticeable difference in the pattern is that she is also a stock car racing driver involved in the rough and tumble on the Killarney oval track. What’s more, having just been crowned winner of the 2015/2016 Access Auto Mini Championship, she becomes the youngest ever driver to annex a Western Cape stock car title. It gets even better, because Ciara didn’t have the advantage (as so many do in other forms of racing), of having a car that was faster than that of the competition, or had some other mechanical advantage. The one-make Access Auto Mini class is strictly controlled to ensure all the cars are equal. It has to be a Mini that was built and sold in South Africa. The engines must be standard and may not have a capacity of more than Ciara van Niekerk shows a thumbs up after another win at Killarney.
fter it was all over she modestly credited her grandpa, a prominent racer himself in days long gone, and her father for their help, claiming that without it she would never have been able to accomplish what she did.

Local player holds on to squash title Cape Town’s Gary Wheadon, who was a firm favourite, didn’t disappoint as he won the men’s title at the recent Brian Bands Madibaz Open Squash Tournament in Port-Elizabeth. The Milnerton based Wheadon, who is ranked in the top 20 in the country, defeated Port Elizabeth’s Rudi van Niekerk to bag his fifth consecutive title. The left-handed Wheadon has dominated the Madibaz Open, but was made to work for his victory against the local star. Port Elizabeth’s Lizelle Goosen won the women’s title. Goosen, Van Niekerk’s sister, outlasted close rival and defending champion Jacqui Ryder 3-2 in a tough women’s contest to regain the title. After jumping to a 2-0 lead, Wheadon was put on the back foot by an aggressive Van Niekerk in the third game, with the PE man holding three game points at 10-7. Wheadon closed the gap to 10-9 before Van Niekerk played a drop shot into the nick to seal the game 11-9. However, the defending champion, who showed great patience and consistency when the pressure mounted, regained the initiative in the fourth to run out a deserving winner. Goosen and Ryder had a ding-dong battle in the women’s final. After conceding a tight third game 11-8 to trail 2-1, Ryder fought back to level matters. The number one seed however maintained her composure to stay on top in the deciding game. Tournament organiser and Madibaz number one Jason le Roux, who ended in third place, said they were satisfied with another successful event. “We are very happy with the way things turned out. We had a very nice entry, with some good strength up front and lots of close matches in the middle section. We also had some newcomers in the bottom half and they remarked to me how much they enjoyed watching the top players in action.” Le Roux said their objective was to grow the field next year.
And the future? Well she has great aspirations about her racing career and hopes to be able to move onto the main circuit at Killarney before too much longer. She’ll be worth watching.

MOTOCROSSKAMPIOEN : NEIL GAAN BINNEKORT KRAGTE MEET TEEN BESTES IN AFRIKA
Ry stof in ander se oë STEHAN SCHOEMAN
N
Ek oefen twee keer ’n week by Zone 7 vir so twee uur op ’n slag. “Ek is baie opgewonde om Kenia toe te
gaan, en ek gaan my beste gee en gaan om te wen,” sê Neil vol moed. As dit by helde in dié sport kom, verwys hy onmiddellik na die Amerikaner Ryan Dungey wat verskeie titels hou. “Ryan is my held en dit sal cool wees om hom eendag te ontmoet.”
DF wys weer staal in W-Kaap-fietsrenne Die Hoërskool D.F.
