CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Following my first quarter in the Chair, I am so impressed with the help and support that we have received from all our colleagues in Marine House.

I

would like to say a few words on the magnificent Summer Visit to the Norfolk Broads, held in July, and organised by our Administrator, Libby Gordon. Since Libby arrived at our new TYHA office, she has worked tremendously hard to set up the office and carry out the demanding work of our busy association. After our first “Fore and Aft” in June and Libby’s first Council Meeting, also in that same month, Libby was immersed in the detail our summer visit. Many of you, who have joined us in the past, know how much work goes into this event. I would like to thank Libby for such attention to detail on an incredibly busy summer visit, you kept us captivated for the whole day, well done. I would also like to thank Sarah Hanna for all her work in helping us to organise this very successful event. I would also like to thank our host marinas; Alan and Sue Goodchild, Chris Bromley, James Knight, Leslie Mogford, Antony Landamore, Les Funnell and Alan Morgan, our new President of the BMF, who kindly joined us. Thank you for your support. I hope you enjoy reading Libby’s great article, on the Summer Visit in the next issue of Fore and Aft. I would like to highlight and thank the members for putting in so much time on our behalf. Over the summer we have been looking at ways to improve the Gold Anchor Award Scheme, promoting issues relating

0 4 FO RE & AF T S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 0

to Inland Waterway Marinas, working closely with BMF Central on this issue, Researching into the arrangements on which contractors come into our marinas, and of course promoting the new, much larger Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show. We move forward now to promote the TYHA Which Marina Stand at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show. As you know this has become a huge stand, which acts as a central feature to the Marina Industry. If you have not yet tried this stand to promote your marina, I would highly recommend it to you. With a full panel [2mx1m], for only £ 2,000, this represents an excellent investment in your marina marketing. We have a brochure service available too. Please don’t hesitate to contact the TYHA office with your booking. I would add, that this stand works extremely well for overseas members, especially as we look after the staffing of the stand. Please remember to feature your participation on the stand to all your customers, and encourage them to come to the show ! Thank you for your support.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT I am pleased to report that there have been many significant developments in the International Marina sector and with this we have had a huge amount of interesting articles and news for this issue of Fore & Aft. held on the 2nd March 2011 and further details will be posted on our website closer to the time. This is a valuable and free service to our members.

Dear reader… Since our last issue we have been very busy supporting our members and developing our services. Please take the time to consider some of our upcoming events: TYHA stand at the London Boat Show: We are now taking bookings for spaces at our ‘Which Marina?’ stand at the 2011 Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show. The National Boat Show team have shown real innovation and redesigned the show and this year Which Marina? is in a very strong position which should promote some excellent footfall for participating exhibitors. As part of our proactive promotional campaign for the Which Marina? stand we have organised a daily half hour slot at 3pm in the ‘Knowledge box’. This is a presentation theatre where we will promote TYHA members and products and encourage visitors to our stand. Details on how to exhibit are in this issue of Fore & Aft and on www.tyha.co.uk. Inland marina forum: We recently organised an Inland Marina Forum to provide an opportunity for managers and service providers to meet and discuss issues specific to them. On this occasion topics included, British Waterways statistics and policy, EU Fuel Directive, Gold Anchor Award scheme and rateable value of marinas. If you would like to attend future meetings the next one will be 0 6 FO RE & AF T S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 0

Marina Manager Training: There are some excellent training opportunities for marina managers available and the next Advanced Marina Management School is in November 2010 in Dublin, Ireland. More details are available in the international section of this Fore & Aft and on www.tyha.co.uk. I hope you enjoy your read and I look forward to seeing you soon.

P.S. - If you have any feedback on Fore & Aft or interesting content for the December publication, please send it in to us. This is a great opportunity as Fore & Aft is distributed all around the world to marinas, service providers and significant industry stakeholders.

www.berthsearch.com www.berthsearch.com is a marketing tool provided by The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA) specifically marketed at boat owners. Berth Search lists all TYHA member marinas and any vacant berths. It is updated on a daily basis and can be searched according to location and gold anchor status. You, as a marina and mooring operator and as a member of the Yacht Harbour Association and the British Marine Federation, can list your available berths on the website free of charge. The new website has been designed by Ocean Road and TYHA is delighted with the ongoing developments of the site. It certainly seems to be a hit because it is receiving on average 66 unique visitors each day browsing an average of 5 marinas each time they visit. If you would like to list your available berths please simply contact Libby Gordon with berth details on Tel: +44 (0) 1784 223817 or email lgordon@britishmarine.co.uk

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir…

Dear Sir…

I would be extremely interested to know why so many motor boats are being built with a wheel on the wrong side (the starboard side). Ships, large motor yachts and sailing yachts usually have a centre wheel which is fine. The traditional side for a wheel on small motor vessels has always been on the port side. When passing port to port this is the logical side particularly in a narrow channel or river. I have asked manufacturers who say it is customer demand. I think if a customer is buying a boat he or she should be encouraged to uphold nautical tradition. In my opinion boats with the wheel on the starboard side look so out of place and after all we wouldn’t out of choice buy a left hand drive car for use in the UK.

"Are liveaboards a hindrance or a help in modern day marinas? Is it best to have a full liveaboard policy, accept them but with guidelines, pretend they don't exist or don't allow them at all? What suggestions could be given on this open issue?"

It will be interesting to hear your views. Yours truly NT Clark

Dear Sir… "What are peoples’ views on boaters insurance? Is 3 million the standard liability requested by your marina? Do you request sight of or an actual copy of said insurance? Do you take owners word for it that they are insured especially with visiting yachts? As are there companies now offering insurance through the internet that are based abroad do we need to be mindful of boaters looking for cheaper insurance that actually doesn't cover them within your marina?" Yours faithfully S Hanna

Yours faithfully An other

Dear Sir… Why are the International Connection Standards still not being followed? Since 1975 there has been a recognised International Standard for pump out deck fittings and for pump out hose probes. The standard ensures that when any boat requires its grey and black water holding tank pumped out the probe on the end of the pump out unit’s hose will fit the boat’s deck fitting perfectly. This provides a vacuum tight connection to enable fast, clean, hands free (and trouble free) pump out. So why, over thirty years later, are numerous boats still being built and sold with non standard fittings, which will cause no end of problems when attempting to empty their waste tanks, being sold to unsuspecting customers? Yours faithfully Ian Marriott

CASE STUDY

Save Money and Improve Customer Service by Recycling More…

etting up a recycling scheme in your marina can drastically reduce your waste disposal costs, reduce your impact on the environment and improve your green credentials with berth holders. Since 2007, Landfill Tax has risen by £8 per tonne per year, and in 2010 reached £48 per tonne, twice the 2007 rate. This increase is set to continue until at least 2014, when the rate will reach £96 per tonne. Many marinas have experienced an increased demand from boaters for better recycling facilities. Most of us are used to recycling at home and now expect do to so in the marina. Setting up a recycling scheme needn’t be difficult.

Here are some top tips from The Green Blue

• Most waste sent to landfill. • 6 x 1100 litre wheelie bins and 5 x 12m3 skips of mixed waste were emptied twice per week. • Annual cost £12k per year.

and all plastics, the other general waste. • General waste bales are taken to a recycling depot, waste is further separated and recycled, composted or chipped for fuel. • Cardboard and glass collected for free. • An income is received from scrap metal and batteries and is offset against the cost of waste disposal.

Reasons to Recycle

Outcomes

1] Compare the waste contractors in your area for prices, service and the types of waste that can be recycled.

Case Study

2] Negotiate - Don’t be afraid to ask for a better price.

Prior to Recycling

3] Identify waste streams and the types of recycling containers to use. 4] Place recycling bins next to the landfill bins. 5] Design good signage. Ask The Green Blue for a fact sheet and funding opportunities. 6] Inform staff and berth holders what to recycle. 7] Monitor - Get feedback from the waste contractors about contamination or take a peek in the bins. 8] Review - You may need to revise the location/number of bins or signage. 9] Feedback results to customers and staff to encourage support.

Fambridge Yacht Haven Ltd, River Crouch in Essex. 230 berths, 120 swinging moorings. 5 waste disposal areas.

• The increasing cost of landfill tax. • Wasted space in the bins. • Desire to be more environmentally friendly.

How did they do it? The existing waste contractor, Green Recycling, were very positive and supported all of the changes. • Recycling bins installed for glass, paper/card, plastics, scrap metal, timber, waste oil, oily rags and batteries. • Clear signage was installed on each container. Some funding for signage was received from The Green Blue • Two second hand compactors purchased from ebay costing £6,000. One for cardboard, tins

• Zero waste sent to land fill. No landfill tax is payable. • Estimated saving of £8k per annum. • Positive response form berth holders and visitors. • The initial investments costs should pay for themselves within 4 to 5 years. • Marina staff can avoid overflowing bins at busy times as waste is forklifted into the compactors. Danyal said “Our customers love the opportunity to be green and are using all the bins correctly thanks to the signage, and we’re looking to save around £8K per annum – not bad for a small sized marina”

The States of Alderney seeks a developer for a new circa 300 berth Marina in Braye Harbour

T

he States of Alderney has launched its search for a partner to design, build, finance and operate a new marina at Braye Harbour, Alderney, in the Channel Islands. Expressions of interest are currently being sought from marina operators capable of delivering the circa 300 berth marina. The Outer Harbour at Alderney provides a unique opportunity for a new marina in one of Europe’s finest and least developed yachting positions. The provision of a marina is a key part of the island’s plans to attract inward investment and will significantly boost the island’s economic objectives. This is an exciting project which has already attracted a good deal of interest both locally and with developers. It is likely that the selected developer will be offered a long term lease on the marina and, subject to planning, construction is anticipated to start spring 2011.

The Vision Our vision is to create a first class venue for both yachts and motor cruisers. Alderney is the third largest of the Channel Islands and is the first of those islands encountered when travelling from the southern parts of UK in a southerly direction. Alderney is a low tax, VAT free jurisdiction. The current plan for the site envisages Braye Harbour being developed for marine or associated uses, creating a space that is both a draw for tourists and a convenient location for those who would like to berth their boats for longer periods. The States of Alderney is keen to ensure that the development is consistent with the mature nature of the Island’s facilities and complementary to the renowned island way of life. Accordingly creative and imaginative proposals that have a sound commercial grounding and sympathetic to the environment would be welcomed.

Rhu Marina T

he Crown Estate is pleased to announce that it is making a significant financial investment of £1.4 million in Rhu marina on the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. By early 2011 the sailing community will benefit from a safer and all year around marina in one of the finest sailing areas in the world. The existing floating breakwaters system will be replaced, providing greater all round shelter to the marina. The improvements will also include 58 new berths, increasing the total number of berths to 240. Simon Haigh, Managing Director of Quay Marinas Limited, who lease and operate Rhu Marina, said: “This is very good news for all concerned. Rhu customers will benefit enormously from the new breakwater arrangements, and we shall be offering excellent value berthing packages going forward into 2011. ”

Alasdair Rankin, Head of Marine Business Development at The Crown Estate said: “We are confident that this significant investment in Rhu Marina will benefit the marina in years to come. The works will put us in a position to add a significant number of berths, carry out the refurbishment and replacement of existing berths. We are also keen to look further into improving the onshore marina facilities to provide a first class marina facility that caters for the future needs of our customers. Architects have now been appointed to take forward the master planning and design of the shore-side improvements.”

£1.4 million investment sees better facilities for the Clyde The Crown Estate purchased Rhu, one of Scotland’s best known marinas in April 2008 for £4 million. It currently provides 182 berths and related facilities on a 2.6 ha (6.5 acre) site on the Firth of Clyde. The site includes moorings, boat storage areas,

marine workshops and a chandlery, as well as the RNLI station with slipway and HM Coastguard. The marina has been leased to Quay Marinas since 2008, who also lease Deganwy marina in north Wales from The Crown Estate.

PILLING’S LOCK WELCOME A CHARITY BOAT

A

fter months of mechanical upgrades, the Baldwin Trust’s 71ft Narrowboat “Dandelion” took up her new base at Pilling’s Lock Marina. The move from her on-line BW mooring in Loughborough was spurned by several occasions where thefts of fuel occurring in 2009 and the Trust – who already operate on a tight budget with many volunteers – decided enough was enough, they needed a secure base! The trust was originally formed to help the patients of the Baldwin Ward at Leicester Frith Hospital by the provision of a narrow boat for day outings or longer holidays. This aim is now extended to include elderly, infirm and other needy groups of people, some in care homes to whom a day spent in the tranquil canal side 2 0 FO RE & AF T S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 0

environment are especially beneficial. They are also pleased to arrange trips for small or family groups with a deserving family member. The Trust has two operational narrow boats; “St Clare” (based at Raynsway Marina) and “Dandelion”. “Dandelion” was recently taken to the Erewash for a new engine installation and arrived at Pilling’s Lock in early April 2010. The new base also allows cruises to be more flexible as the boat can now be turned around in the marina. Pilling’s Lock Marina have sponsored the charity by constructing a specially designed wheelchair access berth with full safety rails. This gives a safe a secure loading area for “Dandelion’s” hydraulic foredeck which enables her to take passengers with almost any

disability. The Marina also subsidises the berthing fees for “Dandelion” to help the charity financially. We’re very pleased to have the Baldwin Trust based here as they’re a fantastic charity who give all their clients a wonderful experience of the local waterways. When we heard about their recent issues we have been only too happy to help. Steelwork for the new mooring was provided by Nigel Hodgson at Britannia Services and some very fine woodwork has been done by our very own Steven Hinkley to complete this new custom made mooring pontoon. It’s nice that we have the spare facilities to help Baldwin Trust – and stop the pesky Diesel Thief in Loughborough!

WE NEED YOUR HELP! THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICHESTER IS UNDERTAKING AN ANGLO/FRENCH RESEARCH PROJECT LOOKING AT THE MARINE INDUSTRY. The research is run through the cross border collaborative EU INTERREG CAMIS programme and covers the period 2009 2013. It brings together 19 French and British partners and covers topics such as transport, innovation and business clusters. The Marine Cluster strand of the CAMIS project aims to locate and map cluster activities in four marine industry themes: Offshore renewable energy, marina tourism, marine environment, and marine operations. Dawn Robins, from the University of Chichester who is leading the research project, said: “The aim is to identify successful cluster activities and promote further economic

growth in the marine industry. By working with marine companies to first identify, and then facilitate, the development of best working practice and knowledge transfer, the marine sector will achieve increased productivity for the benefit of the individual company and local economy in each region.” Clustering has long been thought of as a successful method of increasing economic growth as it allows firms to have better access to resources such as technology, information, inputs, customers, and supply chains. It also

improves efficiency through collaboration on knowledge and sharing of resources. Marinas are ideally positioned to facilitate cluster activities and improve the local economy due to the varied and consistent customer base and specific locational draw. Dawn added: “Through working with established clusters we hope to understand the reasons why some clusters are effective and others are not, what it is that makes a cluster successful, and how we can facilitate in helping clusters to re-energise and develop.” In order to achieve this research, the University needs YOUR help! If you own or manage a Marina and would be willing to be interviewed either face-to-face or by phone/email then please contact Dawn Robins at the University of Chichester on d.robins@chi.ac.uk or 01243 793407 for further information.

Why is the rating valuation of a marina so complicated?

I have been asked why rating valuation a marina is so complicated

T

he reason is simple: rates are a tax on the use and occupation of property based upon its rental value. The assessment of most shops, offices, warehouses and small properties is simple because there is normally ample direct or indirect evidence of rental value. Unfortunately marinas do not normally let in the open market. There are leases of marina sites, parts of marinas, often of the foreshore or of a ransom strip providing access to a river or canal, as well as inter family or inter company rents, but not of arms length transactions of a whole marina. Extensive research by the Valuation Office Agency using the resources of HMRC as

well as by my professional colleagues and myself has to date failed to produce sufficient useful direct market rental evidence of marinas. Marinas are not unique. There are many other classes of property where there is very little rental evidence including oil refineries, atomic power stations, public schools, petrol filling stations, and bingo halls. There have been many disputes before courts and tribunals over the correct method of arriving at rental value for a property for which there is no direct rental evidence. The courts have supported what is today known as the receipts and expenditure method of valuation (R&E) to assess the rental value of an income producing property.

The R&E approach looks at the income which a marina is achieving, from sources such as moorings, storage ashore, chandlery, boat repairs, brokerage and fuel sales to determine the rent which the marina can support. The assessment of a marina is complicated by the fact that domestic property is subject to council tax and exempt from assessment to non-domestic rates. Whilst a boat is not normally assessable to either rating or council tax, the mooring to which it is attached is liable to one or other of these taxes. The definition of a domestic mooring is one occupied by a boat which is the sole or main residence of an individual. Just to complicate matters, unlike many shops, factories and warehouses, no two marinas are the same. Furthermore swinging moorings are exempt from rating. The assessment of a marina for rating purposes is a complicated business and any marina operator concerned about his assessment is advised to speak to a Chartered Surveyor with experience of dealing with rating and council tax valuations.

NEW DIESEL LEGISLATION Fuel Quality Directive…

L

egislation (EU Directive 2009/30/EC) will be introduced on the 1st January 2011 which requires that all gas oil (red diesel) used for inland recreational craft should contain no more that 10 milligrams of sulphur per kilogram of fuel (virtually sulphur free). At present UK fuel supply includes two 'diesel' grades, road diesel and gas oil which is supplied for off-road equipment, coastal shipping, commercial heating applications and stationary equipment. Gas oil currently contains up to 1000 milligrams of sulphur per kilogram, but road diesel is already sulphur free. The oil industry has indicated that they expect to meet the sulphur free gas oil requirement largely by supplying road diesel for use in offroad equipment and adding a red excise marker dye for use such as inland recreation vessels. The implications of this to marinas and boaters is that because road diesel contains some biodiesel (up to 7%), much off-road equipment

gas oil is also likely to contain biodiesel by 1st January 2011. Sulphur free gas oil will require improved fuel storage “housekeeping” arrangements. If you have tanks storing gas oil you will need to ensure that these are free of water and monitor them monthly to ensure that they remain so. It is recommended that you turnover the contents of the tank every 6 months, but in any event, no less often than every 12 months. If a bacterial outbreak occurs in your fuel you will need to empty and clean your tanks, or seek specialist help to tackle the outbreak with biocide additives and filtering. Where fuel tank location or geometry prevents their cleaning, bacterial growth will eventually be flushed through, but this is likely to require repeated changes of fuel filters to prevent blockages. Users should also replace fuel filters on storage tanks and vessels as a one-off exercise, after 2 to 3 fuel tank throughputs, to prevent deposits picked up by the new fuel

blocking filters. Users of older engines and storage tanks with sight gauges should check for any signs of fuel leakage. If leakage does occur the equipment will need a one-off replacement of any leaking fuel seals or fuel pipes.

Q : Why are gas oil quality requirements changing? A : Sulphur free gas oil is needed to ensure reliable operation of new, cleaner off-road equipment engines being introduced from 2011 in support of EU air quality objectives.

Q : How do I know if I am buying heating gas oil or sulphur free gas oil for off-road equipment? A : Sulphur free gas oil for off-road equipment is not visually distinguishable from heating gas oil. Make sure your fuel supplier knows what use you need the fuel for. They will be able to tell you what standard the fuel they supply you with meets.

For more information on this legislation or any other relevant issues please contact: Gareth Turnbull, TYHA General Manager directly on 01784 223 816.

he family owners of Waveney River Centre in South Norfolk have scooped another environmental plaudit, winning Practical Boat Owner magazine’s Green Award for Marine Service & Support. Waveney River Centre, a holiday park and marina on the Norfolk Broads, promotes sustainability through energy efficiency, recycling, water conservation and customer education. The Centre has numerous environmental policy initiatives and, as a business, saves money through energy efficiency and cutting waste. Sited on the banks of the river Waveney, the family's holiday park and marina provides a picturesque holiday and boating location for thousands of visitors each year to the Broads, Britain’s Magical Waterland. Visitors by boat or land can enjoy the new eco-friendly heated washrooms which feature heat recovery units, fast hand dryers, low-energy sensor-activated lighting and water-saving measures. The Funnell class of low-wash holiday cruisers designed to reduce the impact of boating on the riverbanks - have been developed and built at Waveney River Centre; examples can be hired from the organisation’s sister company, Horning Ferry Marina, and will be exhibited at the London Boat Show in January.

Last year, Waveney River Centre was awarded David Bellamy’s coveted Gold Conservation Award in addition to 4 Gold Anchors by the Yacht Harbour Association. Since taking over Waveney River Centre six years ago with Ruth's parents Len and Hazel Funnell, Ruth and James have embarked on a series of initiatives designed to encourage flora and fauna, and reduce their business's carbon footprint. Among the many environmentally-friendly projects has been the creation of wildlife habitats for animals and birds, including, last year, a dedicated conservation zone beside a marsh soke dyke. They have also introduced recycling facilities which visitors are encouraged to use, and constructed mooring board walks from recycled plastics and wood shavings. Communications with customers and suppliers are electronic whenever possible, to cut down on paper and toner use. The centre's shop provides a valued service for local people - and stocks a wide range of local produce and gifts including "Eddie's Best Bitter", named after the centre's steel pike statue which has a blog at www.afishcallededdie.com. www.waveneyrivercentre.co.uk SEPTEMBER 2010

Turkey, the Sea of Marmara links the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea. Istanbul E-Marina is part of an overall development for a residential area located close to the banks of the Sea of Marmara. This port infrastructure will eventually have 765 moorings intended for resident yachtsmen. In mid-May, Poralu Marine started its program with the delivery and installation of phase 1, which covers 609 moorings. The remaining 156 moorings will be delivered during a second phase.

The organisation of the installation has been entrusted to Poralu Marine's agent in Turkey. The first 609 moorings are intended to accommodate boats between 10 and 25m in length, but 10 berths are designed specifically for superyachts from 35 m to 50 m in length. The system accounts for a run of 1,584 metres of pontoons, varying in width from 2.25 to 3m and incorporates 11 bridges. The first boats should be moored at the Istanbul E-Marina from the start of the 2011 season.

fter an approach from the Irish Marine Federation and TYHA members in Ireland, the next Advanced Marina Management School will be run in Dublin from 7-12th November 2010. The course is an intensive six day residential course, restricted to eighteen delegates with at least three years marina management experience.

BMF staff Sarah Dhanda and Dee Williams visited the area in July as part of planning the event and took the opportunity to visit TYHA members Dun Laoghaire Marina and Malahide Marina (pictured) who will be helping to deliver the school.

have recently installed fourteen EB30 Docking Systems into it’s marina

The EB30 Docking System

‘This system has allowed us to increase our capacity without adding more pontoons’ states Duncan Chalmers Marina General Manager. “The EB30 system, which is set at 30 degrees to the pontoon, has helped to create a specific area within the marina for the docking of smaller boats i.e. 5-6m thereby ensuring that the higher revenue longer berths are free for maximum capacity and more importantly revenue.”

The EB30 Docking System is about 80% smaller than traditional fingers, has a unique rotating system which guides a boat into the berth and because of the integrated solar lighting, is easy to locate at night increasing safety and looks stunning.

TYHA SUMMER VISIT NORFOLK BROADS… 41 TYHA members and guests congregated on the Norfolk Broads on 7th July 2010 to begin the extensive visit around marinas and boat buildings in Norfolk.

M

any of us arrived on the evening before, at the very comfortable Ivy House Country Hotel or the Victoria Hotel, and were driven to dinner at 3rd Crossing restaurant in Lowestoft Marina. We were met by a glass of Pimms which was an extremely civilized way to start the evening, followed by a sumptuous dinner with complementary wine, courtesy of Jeff Jefferson, the owner. The following morning we met for coffee at the Ivy House Country Hotel and departed by coach. Commentary onboard was given by Les Mogford who gave us an interesting tour guide of this beautiful part of Norfolk. Our first stop was at Goodchild’s Marina where we were given a warm welcome by Sue Goodchild. Her husband, Alan, gave us a detailed tour of their commercial boat building operation, showing both their refit work and new build of Orc 171.P Fast Pilot Craft. We then headed for St Olaves and braved the bracing wind to speak with Chris Bromley who gave us a detailed history of this marina that had undergone considerable recent expansion. St Olaves also offers full boatyard facilities and services. As we started our journey to Waveney River Centre, James Knight gave us detailed background on this very varied site which had just about everything. The centre offers a range of luxurious holiday homes, camping, cruiser hire. James’ enthusiasm was every evident and one could see that this marina truly deserved its Four Gold Anchor award. Onwards to the beautiful Coldham Hall which overlooks the River Yare where we enjoyed an excellent lunch served by Natalie and her staff.

A great day was had by all and I’d like to give special thanks to the following: • Sarah Hanna for all her assistance and help organising the trip plus the Pimms • 3rd Crossing Restaurant Jeff and staff who served us well • Ivy House Hotel and Victoria Hotel for the excellent accommodation • Amabassador coaches and our driver, Brian, who navigated the coach so well • Coldham Hall - Natalie and staff who served wonderful food • City boats for the trip around Surlingham Broad • Sue and Alan Goodchild Goodchild’s • Chris Bromley - St Olaves Marina • James & Ruth Knight Waveney River Centre • Les and Lorraine Mogg Eastwood Marina • Antony Landamore Landamores • Les Funnell and team Ferry Marina

And finally, I’d like to thank all guests who chose to join the TYHA team on this year’s summer visit and we look forward to welcoming you, plus a few others next year. Libby Gordon TYHA Administrator

Our ferry arrived for a guided tour over Surlingham Broad and across the River Yare to Eastwood Marina. The ferry dropped us off at Les Mogford’s fantastic Flag House – a building that you cannot possibly miss on that part of the Broads. Les and Lorraine Mogford welcomed us to their marina and holiday home which we were invited to walk around. This charming marina showed so much attention to detail, you could see that Les and Lorraine were entirely committed and deserves its Four Gold Anchor award. Our next stop was to see something very different, Landamores, who build much of the Oyster range. We received a warm welcome from Antony Landamore and colleagues. We were divided into groups and given a detailed tour of this impressive boat building operation. The quality of work here was in abundance and the team took an incredible level of pride in their work. Our final stop was at Ferry Marina where we were greeted with cold drinks. We were given a warm welcome from Les Funnel and his team who conducted an interesting tour of their range of holiday homes and busy marina and fleet. Ferry Marina is due to have their Gold Anchor assessment later this year. Back on the coach for the trip back to the hotel, farewells and the long trip home.

Which Marina? Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show, ExCeL TYHA Which Marina Stand at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show. As you know this has become a huge stand, which acts as a central feature to the Marina Industry. If you have not yet tried this stand to promote your marina, I would highly recommend it to you. With a full panel [2mx1m], for only ÂŁ2,000, this represents an excellent investment in your marina

marketing. We even have a brochure service available too. Please don’t hesitate to contact the TYHA office with your booking. I would add, that this stand works extremely well for overseas members, especially as we look after the staffing of the stand. Please remember to feature your participation on the stand to all your customers, and encourage them to come to the show!
