of families thanks to our amazing supporters.
As we approach our 15th anniversary, we have much to celebrate as Wales’ first children’s hospice.
Jacob Ferriday was only a baby when he first came to Tyˆ Hafan. In fact he was referred in 1998, before the hospice was actually built!
We are incredibly grateful to you, the people of Wales, for supporting Tyˆ Hafan, not just in financial terms, but in the time generously donated by our committed volunteers and fundraisers. We couldn’t have helped more than 550 families without our wonderful supporter base and for that, we are truly thankful. Inside are some stories which describe the difference we’ve been able to make to the lives
2
providing care, being there
One of seven children, Jacob, 17, suffers from the condition encephalopathy which is a brain disorder and means that he has profound learning difficulties, development delay and epilepsy.
His mum, Sally, describes the significant difference Tyˆ Hafan has made to her family over the years: “When we first visited the hospice I didn’t know what to expect. It was hard for me to leave Jacob because he was very young and I was not used to being apart from him. I was reassured by the care team and very soon felt completely at ease. I instantly felt the pressure lift. I hadn’t realised how tired I was or quite how much care I’d been giving until I had that break. “We very much rely on the short break care as it can be incredibly exhausting looking after Jacob and six other children at times. Jacob loves staying at the hospice and has made so many wonderful friends
there. He has changed an awful lot since his first visit as a baby – he is now a lovely young man who brings a lot of joy to our family. “Jacob has had a lot of surgery over the years and sadly, there is nothing more that can be done for him. Managing his pain and making sure he’s comfortable is the most important thing now. “If I was to describe what Tyˆ Hafan provides in one word, it would be ‘support’. They are always there for us, whether that be at the hospice, in hospital or at home. “Looking back, I really don’t think we would have coped without Tyˆ Hafan. They have been a godsend and we are incredibly grateful for everything they’ve done over the last 15 years.” Sally Ferriday

suzanne’s legacy During her retirement, Tyˆ Hafan’s founder, Suzanne Goodall, decided to open the first children’s hospice in Wales and offer care to life-limited children and young people. Suzanne needed the help and support of the people of Wales to raise enough money to turn her dream into a reality. “My retirement was put on hold when I felt driven to campaign for a children’s hospice in Wales to provide expertise and loving care to the children who had only a short life. My aim was to provide support and short break care to hard-pressed families, coping with unimaginable stress,” said Suzanne. “I had no doubts that the people of Wales, understanding the situation that these children and families faced, would open their hearts and give generously. My faith was justified.

providing care, being there
“In 1999, after 11 years of hard work, Tyˆ Hafan opened its doors and we saw the first families cross the threshold. Built on the coast in Sully, near Penarth, Tyˆ Hafan's hospice truly is a haven.
“Since the opening, more than 550 children and their families have benefitted from the love, care and support at the hospice and in their homes; the continuing enhancement of the service is made possible by the warm-hearted people of Wales, who give to ensure the continued success of Tyˆ Hafan’s excellence in care.” Originally, Tyˆ Hafan was just a bright and beautiful building where life-limited children, young people and their families could go for comfort. Now it has become a whole philosophy of
care which extends right across Wales and into the very homes of families referred to our services. Suzanne’s vision to open Wales’ first children’s hospice will be her legacy.
What will be your legacy? Please help us continue to provide comfort, care and support to the hundreds of Welsh children and families who need it, by considering including a gift in your Will to Tyˆ Hafan.
We appreciate all gifts, large and small, and every pound received will make the lives of those who need our service a little bit brighter. If you would like to consider leaving a gift in your Will and would like some more information, please contact us on 029 2053 2270 or email legacy@tyhafan.org. There is also more information available on our website www.tyhafan.org
Gifts in Wills provide the care for 1 in 5 of the children we support. Without them, we simply wouldn’t be able to support as many families.

children’s hospice week Thank you to everyone who supported Tyˆ Hafan during Children’s Hospice Week 2013. This year we transformed the hospice with superhero-themed decorations and were visited by sports stars including the Celtic Dragons, Cardiff Devils players and Olympic medallist Jamie Baulch. Fundraising activities took place across Wales, helping to raise vital funds for Tyˆ Hafan. The week was made extra special after HRH The Duchess of Cambridge delivered the following message of support:
6
providing care, being there
“Children’s Hospice Week is a time to recognise, celebrate and support the inspirational work of those hospices, and those who provide palliative care to these children and families.
”Children’s hospices provide lifelines to families at a time of unimaginable pain. The support they give is vital. In order to carry out this wonderful work, our help is needed. “With our support, those providing children’s palliative care can continue to offer these extraordinary services. It does not bear thinking about what these families would do without this.” To see a video of our celebrations, visit www.youtube.com/tyhafan

a dad’s story “I am dad to six-year-old Luca who was referred to Tyˆ Hafan in 2010. Luca is the only person in Wales to suffer from a rare condition called ROHHAD syndrome. ROHHAD stands for Rapidonset Obesity with Hypothalamic Dysfunction, Hypoventilation and Autonomic Dysregulation.
“When Luca was diagnosed at Great Ormond Street, as a family we felt very much on our own. He has had a host of problems including repeated respiratory arrests. Hospitals seem like second homes; over the past few years Luca has been in every paediatric ICU bed in the Heath hospital.
“It is a very rare condition affecting approximately only 75 cases worldwide. Patients with the condition have damage to the mechanism governing proper breathing. ROHHAD syndrome is potentially fatal and incurable.
“We also have a daughter Sofia aged four who is fit and well and is now starting to be more aware of Luca’s condition. Thankfully, we have received a great deal of support from Tyˆ Hafan and they have made a huge difference to us and many other families. “Tyˆ Hafan allows us to stay there as a family and receive short break care. It gives my wife and I

opportunities that many people take for granted, like going out for a meal or visiting the cinema. It also gives us an opportunity to spend quality time with our daughter.
“Tyˆ Hafan has helped by always being there on the other end of the phone, visiting us in hospital and providing vital short break care. Both Luca and Sofia love visiting Tyˆ Hafan and have great fun with the fantastic staff who work there. They also enjoy participating in the various day activities arranged throughout the year, the most recent being a ‘Super Hero’ themed cinema visit.
“I recently took part in the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge for Tyˆ Hafan and it was a great opportunity to meet with other dads to share our family situations. My wife has been on ‘Pamper Days’ and a Christmas shopping trip to Bath with other mums. Again, it allows us to meet others in very similar situations. “Having experienced first hand the support that Tyˆ Hafan provides to us and others we cannot thank them enough, for providing care and being there! Thank you Tyˆ Hafan!” Angelo Pucella

dads tackle welsh 3peaks A team of dads whose children have benefitted from Tyˆ Hafan’s services were amongst the 200 intrepid fundraisers to take on the GE Aviation Welsh 3Peaks challenge, which turned into the 2Peaks challenge due to the unpredictable Welsh weather!
The event, which has raised more than £1.25m for Tyˆ Hafan since its launch in 1998, saw participants tackle the mighty Cadair Idris before moving down to south Wales, where they then scaled Pen y Fan, covering a total distance of 12.35 miles and 5,837ft. “The guys had a really good couple of days,” said Tyˆ Hafan Play Worker, Paul Fisher, who led the dads’ group for the second year in a row. “There was
a tremendous team spirit amongst all of us but I think it was especially beneficial for the dads to be part of the event as a team. They all share a strong common bond and are able to talk about their particular experiences in caring for their life-limited children with each other which is hugely beneficial for them.”
The dads’ group was formed back in 2006 and provides a much needed source of strength and support to fathers of life-limited children. Social activities provide an ideal environment for interaction and the development of a supportive network for fathers/male guardians who share common personal and social interests.

"I don’t know what we would do without Tyˆ Hafan’s support."
Evan is not as badly affected by the condition, but Oliver is supported by Tyˆ Hafan as a way of giving his mum some rest. Nikki said: "We were really nervous when we first visited and didn’t know what to expect. We thought it would be quite a morbid place but it was the complete opposite. It’s a very happy place with such a positive environment. Tyˆ Hafan gives me a complete rest. It

a family’s goodbye Two-year-old Archie Watson died peacefully surrounded by his family at the hospice in March. His parents, Brad and Lauren, have been sharing their journey with others by writing a blog. In an honest and heart-breaking extract, Lauren describes their final goodbyes to their youngest son.
8 April Archie became poorly at the end of February and we made the decision to go to Tyˆ Hafan and enjoy what time we had left with him. In that last month he crammed a lot in. He watched Wales in the Six Nations, he met his beautiful new
12

cousin Connor, he saw Jack and had extra snuggles and kisses. We had the chance to take lots of photos, walk around the gardens, tell him stories, read him books, spend time in the sensory room, do some art work and simply sit and be in his presence. On March 25 we woke up and we just knew. We told our family that we expected Archie to leave us today. All day we stayed in bed. Archie between me and Brad, taking it in turns to cuddle him and tell him stories.
Archie had never looked so beautiful, his skin was perfect and he left with a smile on his face, which continued to stay. Seconds after Archie passed the curtains blew open, Archie was on his way to meet his new friends.
Brad, Jack and myself stayed at Tyˆ Hafan for the few days following; we were looked after perfectly. Saying goodbye to everyone was hard but it won’t be forever, we will be back, they can’t get rid of us that easily.
On Friday 29 March, Archie’s sister Matilda Rose joined our family. Very bittersweet. She is perfect and continues to help us every day. She looks so much like Archie and he is living on through her. He would be so proud of her.
We held Archie’s celebration of life on Thursday 4 April. We were amazed at the turnout and the amount of colour and balloons on display. The day went perfect. We will be forever grateful for all that attended and helped us say a perfect goodbye to our amazing Archie. He is my little boy and always will be. I love you Archie. Your Mummy xxxx

super sibs! When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness, life for the whole family can quickly turn into hospital visits, medicine, long hours in waiting rooms, and 24 hour care. For siblings of the sick child, this is an unusual environment to find themselves in and the emotional toll can be significant.
2014
we care, so can because you
Part of our unique service is to provide support to the whole family. Our sibling support group, ‘Super Sibs’, includes young people aged between 4 and 16. The care and activities provided by Tyˆ Hafan can give siblings a chance to talk about how they feel and time to have some fun together. Some of the special groups and activities available include activity days, pampering sessions and day trips.
This is the new suggestion tree created by our 'Super 'Sibs'. It gives siblings the opportunity to post any activity suggestions or thoughts they may have about Tyˆ Hafan.
18
providing care, being there
Life through a lens A photography project has captured the imagination of our siblings and we are now in the process of creating a 2014 calendar which features their fabulous work.
Each sibling has taken a photograph which means something personal to them and they have all shared their thoughts and feelings about their pictures which will also be included in the calendar.
Professional photographer Natasha Jenkins who helped with the project, said: “It has been a pleasure and an honour to be asked to work with an incredible group of talented young people. Thank you Tyˆ Hafan for having me and introducing my company, photography jnr, to the hospice.”
The calendars will be available to buy through our website and at our shops across south Wales.

making a lifetime of memories All of us have plenty of great memories stored away; times we threw back our heads and laughed in the cherished company of those we love. It may seem that having a life-limited child means there’s little room for laughter, but in July we launched our Make a Memory Appeal to make sure that isn’t the case. We’d like to say a huge thank you to those of you who have already donated. As many of you will have read, Harry Baxter suffers from Mowat Wilson Syndrome, a life-limiting condition which causes painful seizures that can strike at any time. Harry was diagnosed when he was just three years old, and since then, life has not always been easy for Harry, his Mum, Suzanne and brother, Archie. Suzanne says “Looking after Harry can be really difficult and it often feels like my family is not that far from crisis point. Harry needs a lot of attention, and at home I can never leave his side.”
20
providing care, being there
But since Harry was referred to Tyˆ Hafan in 2007, Suzanne, Harry and Archie have been able to build a lifetime of memories together, all thanks to your support.
“I know that Harry’s life won’t be as long as I would like it to be and that I’ll never see him get married, get his first job or have his own children. But thanks to Tyˆ Hafan, we’ve already been able to pack Harry’s thirteen years so far with fun and laughter and have created memories that I know we will always cherish.” If you would like to make memories for life-limited children like Harry, you can donate today at www.tyhafan.org/ make-a-memory or call us on 029 2053 2254. out in the community Our outreach work allows families to keep their children comfortable at home while having access to specialist treatments like play and music therapy. Our experienced music therapist Diane Wilkinson has delivered therapy in twoyear-old Marley’s home in Cwmbran several times since he was born. Marley has two holes in his heart, lung damage and suffers from seizures. He is deaf and has limited vision but his ability to track the sound of instruments and to react to being touched has improved greatly.
22
providing care, being there
“Marley responded right from the beginning. It has given him a sense of empowerment and has improved his concentration,” said Diane. One of the most pronounced results is that the therapy has helped him smile and talk, something doctors said would never happen. Over the course of Marley’s life, the family say Tyˆ Hafan has been a lifeline for them when other medical facilities were unable to help.
“People think the hospice is a sad place where children go to die but it’s not like that at all,” said mum Leah.
It concentrates on their abilities rather than their disabilities and appeals to them on a very simple level.
“Nothing is too much for the staff, we spent Christmas there which would have been another Christmas in hospital otherwise. Tyˆ Hafan is a lifeline and you know you can count on them.”
A blink of an eye can communicate a feeling, answer a question and elicit a response. A dialogue can take place equally well through sound as through speech, and allow the expression of enjoyment, pain, fear, excitement, anger, sadness or pleasure.
Music therapy draws on every young person’s imagination to help them experience an improved quality of life and express turbulent emotions as their conditions progress.
Music awakens varied emotions which are contained safely within secure boundaries. It empowers young people to be in control, encouraging confidence and a strong sense of self. Those experiencing a life-limiting illness cannot often control their surroundings but creative music making can allow them to be 'in charge'.

FUW gives its support to tyˆ hafan Little Rhydian and his family from mid Wales represented Tyˆ Hafan at the Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) charity of choice announcement at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show. FUW President Emyr Jones revealed that Tyˆ Hafan and Tyˆ Gobaith had been chosen as their latest charitable cause and he hoped that in two years time, the total amount raised by FUW members would be at least £50,000. The first donation has already been made to the newly-chosen charitable causes. FUW Meironydd lady members in the Penllyn and Edyrnion areas, held fundraising activities recently and donated £1,000.
Rhydian is six years old and lives near Aberaeron with his mum, dad, big brother and two loving sisters. He was diagnosed at six months with a non-malignant but extensive brain tumour, for which he had surgery to remove. Sadly the tumour has since grown back which has severely effected his development.
He is not able to bear his weight, except with a standing frame, has limited movement on his right side and is registered blind although has partial sight in his left eye. His mum Carys said: “We were thrilled to help with the official announcement and had a great day at the Royal Welsh Show. Rhydian and the whole family receive fantastic support from Tyˆ Hafan and we were honoured to represent the charity at the event.” Pictured are Rhydian and his family together with Kyle from Tyˆ Gobaith along with Emyr Jones FUW President and representatives from both charities.

“thanks a million” Tyˆŷ Hafan is celebrating after being awarded an incredible £50,000 from Cardiff City Football Club’s ‘Thanks a Million’ programme.
'Thanks a Million' is the brainchild of Cardiff City’s owner Tan Sri Vincent Tan and has seen the club donate one million pounds to selected local charities.
Speaking of the initiative, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, said: “I firmly believe that Cardiff City’s promotion to the Premier League after a long 51 year wait to play at the top level is a blessing – and with the grace of God we want to use this blessing positively to support the charitable organisations and disadvantaged members of the south Wales community, in particular in Cardiff and the valleys where most of our supporters are based.”
Tyˆ Hafan was one of four charities to Tan Sri Vincent Tan has pledged that receive the larger donation of £50,000. Cardiff City Football Club will repeat Ray Hurcombe, Chief Executive of Tyˆ this million pound donation annually to Hafan, said: “We are delighted to community based organisations for as have been chosen to benefit from long as he remains the club’s majority/ this fantastic donation. Cardiff City FC controlling shareholder and the club have been dedicated supporters of remains in the Premier League. lighting tyˆ hafan in memory of ieuan When Cath and Tracey recognised that Ieuan was in the final stages of his short life, they knew that Tyˆ Hafan would be there for them, helping them care for him and make the most of every precious moment. Ieuan died at the hospice on January 23, five days after his fifth birthday. Although it was a traumatic time for the family, they felt comforted knowing they were able to say goodbye to their son in the beautiful surroundings of the hospice with ‘Team Ieu’ by their side. As a baby, Ieuan suffered a devastating brain injury which caused severe epilepsy, cerebral palsy, dysautonomia and he was blind in his right eye. As a result, Ieuan had very complex medical needs and at eight months old Cath and Tracey, who are both registered children’s nurses, became his devoted foster carers, and in time, his Guardians.
26
providing care, being there
From that moment forward, they showered him with love and affection and strived to provide him with a life filled with laughter, happy memories and plenty of “cwtches.” They were referred to Tyˆ Hafan almost immediately and describe the charity’s care as “amazing.”
Tracey said: “The support has been immeasurable. Words cannot express the depth of what we’ve received. ‘Team Ieu’ are phenomenal – every single one of them. The support we were given was absolutely incredible.” Days before Ieuan died, he received a beautiful giraffe lamp as a birthday present. The lamp provided a warm comforting atmosphere of different colours.
Although he couldn’t talk and had very little movement, Ieuan responded by smiling and vocalising at his giraffe lamp. “He absolutely loved it. He loved his lights, sounds and music. The gift was perfect for Ieuan,” said Tracey. The couple stayed at the hospice for a couple of weeks following Ieuan’s death, until they felt strong enough to return to their home in Neath.
“We were then able to have a celebration of Ieuan’s life at the hospice, and about 80 of our friends and family attended, sharing our love, memories and achievements of our boy – it was truly special.” “The bereavement support we’ve received has been absolutely fantastic; ‘Team Ieu’ has continued to provide invaluable support,” said Tracey.
“Through ‘Team Ieu’s’ support, we are now able to think about the future without our boy. We would like to foster another child who has complex health needs. Ieuan was our everything and through his inspiration and lessons of life, he has enabled us to offer our new found knowledge and experience to others.” Cath and Tracy received £1,000 for Tyˆ Hafan through donations at Ieuan’s Celebration of Life and funeral. They used some of the money to purchase lamps for each of the children's bedrooms and the self-contained flat at the hospice. “We hope the children and young people will enjoy the lights as much as Ieuan. We can’t thank Tyˆ Hafan enough and this is a small token, in memory of our boy. Tyˆ Hafan is a truly wonderful charity,” said Cath. “With thanks to the Daisy and Jack store in Cowbridge for helping us to purchase the lamps at a discounted price, and their continued support to Tyˆ Hafan. ” v

years Crackerjackpot is 15 years old! The Crackerjackpot lottery was set up in 1998, before Tyˆ Hafan was even built! Back then it was called the Tyˆ Hafan lottery and the top prize was £1,000. 15 years on, the lottery has evolved to become Crackerjackpot and now has over 40,000 members – the largest hospice lottery in the UK. The top weekly prize has increased to £2,000 and our rollover can go up to a whopping £12,000 jackpot – but becoming a member still only costs £1 a week.
28
providing care, being there
Crackerjackpot provides a vital source of reliable income for Tyˆ Hafan, raising around £1.1 million each year – around a third of the total amount needed to ensure that we can continue offering our vital services to life-limited children, young people and their families from across Wales. WRU charity shop challenge raises thousands The WRU raised more than £7,500 for Tyˆ Hafan after taking part in an ‘Apprentice style’ charity shop challenge event.
Two teams were tasked with running two of Tyˆ Hafan’s stores in Barry and Bridgend to raise as much funds as possible. Welsh rugby player and Scarlets hooker Ken Owens sparked excitement when he arrived at the Bridgend store with the RBS 6 Nations Trophy – and sales went through the roof at both stores thanks to donated WRU merchandise.
The Bridgend team were crowned the winners and the combined efforts of both teams raised an incredible £7,645. Income from all 23 of Tyˆ Hafan’s shops makes a valuable contribution towards providing comfort, care and specialist support to hundreds of life-limited children, young people and their families from across Wales. If your company is looking for a team building day with a difference, why not take part in our next charity shop challenge? For more information call 029 2053 2260 or email info@tyhafan.org
