ISSUE 02 1

We are here to build a platform and give recognition to female-identifying artists of any and all mediums. We are here to prove that doing something “like a girl” is not synonymous with “weak” or “inadequate.” We are here to show you the incredible things that women are capable of. CLEANING Whirring blades Scrub your impression out of my carpet Each individual fiber Bent with the weight of your back Now stands straight As if they were never bent in the first place No dents, no burns, No pieces of torn red notebooks The drone of the motor Erases the weight of your voice in the air That I sometimes still hear That I sometimes still feel Despite the open window And the rotating metal fan on the table That should have blown everything Out of here Out of me Your fingertips are still traced In the lines of gray dust on my bureau Next to the photographs And before the rings I am angry because I think of them Tracing love down my spine And settling into ever nook That could be filled That could be felt The sheets are in piles And I don’t want to change them yet Because they held the last of you When you had your head against the wall And your eyes on the ceiling As your voice lowered And the room filled with sighs That were quiet That were goodbye

23

DRAINING Beads of water race down my spine Blending the ink You had doused on my skin Stripes of black And blue Lathering into the water Below The fears tangled in my hair Are coaxed out of their cages With some soothing words A comb And the promise To feed Red clouds of doubt that had settled Into the roses of my cheeks Leak like levies As the steam sings to them To join them in the mess The thoughts must be scrubbed From the ribcage, And the stomach, The carcasses of long lost larvae Crushed and added Into the stew A lather of indecisions Trails down my arm And seeps below, Twining between my toes Before settling near the drain I pull the plug And watch my entropy Drown Turning the tides over And around Like a carousel Down the drain

IN BETWEENS Have you ever heard a stunted breath the hitch step before missing a stair or the scream of a tornado siren before the grounding of the tunnel Have you heard the moment between the happening and the have happened How nice would it be to have warning a sign that your before is now an after of have becoming had I am searching for our dawn where is our light at the edge of the horizon the small gasp before the day the hitch before the fall the sirens call before the sun I do not hear the gasps I do not see the light I do not hear the rattle Before you strike

DO YOU MIND IF I SMOKE IN HERE “Do You Mind if I Smoke in Here? The bottom of my purse is caked with the guts of cigarettes I asked for when drunk, and it looks like my mom’s car/a mobile shrine to lipstick-stained filters/vents that wheeze nicotine when you’re just trying to turn down the heat/But she always asks/one perched and waiting at the edge of her Maybelline lips/years of practice in talking while inhaling/while holding her breath/ while already rolling down a window for escape She taught me to send balloons up to heaven and their strings have caught trees, tangled branches, choked birds/well-meaning sharpie on punctured latex: I love you wherever you are.

73

THANK YOU He says he just changed his mind. He says this before he even says good morning but you know better than to try and change minds so instead, you scoop up the broken glass of his sentences and kiss him goodbye. Later, you sand down the edges. You string them on a necklace, like beads. He says you’re finally being vulnerable, But he says this while breaking up with you. You want to tell him that your body is made of splinters. That sometimes, you walk around with a belly full of broken glass and fire Other times, an empty core. Instead, you say, I know and sorry Later you sit on the floor of a hot shower and cry yourself into dehydration. He says you’re too emotional. You were smacking a pack of cigarettes against your wrist, not feeling like too much of anything but like an outline of yourself, like a shell. You said nothing. When he leaves, you dye your hair and write three new poems that you show to no one. He it’s just not what he wants, you’re just not what he wants, But this time you swallow all of your apologies. Instead, you tell him you’ve been working on forgetting the words not and good and enough Instead, you say thank you. You string his words on the necklace with the others. You wear it right above your heart, too dull now to make you bleed.

74

PENNIES / ALL FOR YOU There is something to be said About dogs licking their own wounds And never licking others’. What I mean is, I need to stop pressing pennies into my fists, Kicking them over so they’re always heads up. What I mean is, All of my fallen eyelashes were blown away with a wish for you. What I mean is, I woke up and couldn’t tell if this blood was mine or yours.
