THE ESSENTIALS: BEBOP FEATURING

BRANFORDMARSALIS tuesday »

FEBRUARY 3 » 7pm

Hosted by UAB Artist-in-residence Eric Essix, The Essentials is the ASC’s innovative series devoted to honoring the rich history of jazz. » Join us for the third installment of The Essentials as we continue our journey exploring bebop. » The evening begins with a survey of the unique history of FEATURING bebop, the music, and the artists – led by Essix and featuring NEA Jazz Master and renowned awardwinning saxophonist Branford Marsalis. » The VOL. 3 BEBOP second half of the evening features a performance by Marsalis as he leads one of the finest jazz quartets assembled. This three-time Grammy Award winner has continued to exercise and expand his skills as an instrumentalist, a composer, and the head of Marsalis Music. Marsalis founded the label in 2002 and continues to produce both his own projects and those of the jazz world’s most promising new and established artists. » Having gained initial acclaim

through his work with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and his brother Wynton’s quintet in the early 1980s, Marsalis also performed and recorded with a who’s-who of jazz giants including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and Sonny Rollins. He has also collaborated with such diverse artists as Sting, the Grateful Dead, and Bruce Hornsby. » Dedicated to music education, Marsalis has shared his knowledge at such universities as Michigan State, San Francisco State, Stanford, and North Carolina Central, where his full quartet participated in an innovative extended residency. He continues to be an artist-in-residence on the NCCU campus. » Marsalis embodies a commitment to musical excellence and a determination to keep music at the forefront, which will make the third installment of The Essentials a legendary ASC performance that should not be missed.

Hailed for its soul-stirring, captivating performances of supreme artistry, The Jung Trio “is a spectacular group with wonderful musicality at their fingertips,” (Ezra Laderman, composer and Dean Emeritus of Yale University). The trio has established itself as one of the most notable rising young ensembles of today. » This classical group is comprised of sisters Jennie (pianist), Ellen (violinist), and Julie (cellist), each of whom contribute their own warmth and impassioned sensibility to the collaborative force. ARLOGUTHRIE ALICE’S RESTAURANT 50th ANNIVERSARY TOUR

saturday »

FEBRUARY 21 » 8pm

Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary Tour is a unique multi-media show, the likes of which his fans have never seen before, and it is coming to the ASC! Guthrie has been known to generations as a prolific songwriter, social commentator, master storyteller, actor, and activist. » He is the eldest son of America’s most beloved singer/writer/philosopher/artist Woody Guthrie. Arlo Guthrie has become an iconic figure in folk music in his own right with a distinguished and varied career spanning over 50 years. » In 1965 a teenaged Guthrie

performed a “friendly gesture” that proved to be fateful. He was arrested for littering, leading him to be deemed “not moral enough to join the Army.” At age 19, Guthrie attained international attention by recounting the true events on the album Alice’s Restaurant in 1967. “The Alice’s Restaurant Massacre” an 18-minute and 20-second, partially sung comic monologue opposing the war and the backward reasoning of authority, has become an anti-establishment anthem and an essential part of Thanksgiving on rock stations receiving worldwide airplay.

AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH THE

AARONNEVILLEDUO saturday »

MARCH 7 » 8pm

The ASC is proud to have the legendary Aaron Neville Duo performing on the Jemison Stage! This intimate performance will include classic doo-wop hits from the album, My True Story, as well as some of Neville’s most popular tunes. » With My True Story, Neville revisits the music he grew up with, and adds a few new spins along the way. Neville’s first release for Blue Note Records is a collection of doo-wop numbers performed in his utterly inimitable vocal style, and co-produced by Blue Note President Don Was and Keith Richards. » The selections on the album include classics by such giants as Little Anthony and the Imperials (“Tears on My Pillow”), Hank Ballard and the Midnighters (“Work with Me, Annie”), and the Drifters (“Money Honey,” “Under the

Boardwalk,” “This Magic Moment”). To Neville, though, these songs weren’t just the soundtrack to his youth; they became the underpinning for the music he has created across five decades. » “I attended the university of doo-wop-ology,” he says. “Anything I do has got some doo-wop in it. It’s just part of me – it’s the texture that I sing in, it’s the endings, it’s the harmonies. I wake up with a doo-wop song going in my head and I can’t go back to sleep because I’m singing it over and over.” » This classic performance by Aaron Neville will bring back cherished memories of a soulful and sweet America. The 72-year-old Neville’s sweet, high-tenor voice remains in remarkably good shape, and this artful performance is a perfect showcase for it. This one is a must-see!

MARCH 20 » 8pm

Reggae music has never stopped evolving, but for millions of fans from around the world, it’s still defined by the songs of Bob Marley and The Wailers. Their heartbeat rhythms have inspired so much of what’s followed since, as evidenced by the enduring popularity of the “one-drop” reggae sound. » The history of the band during Marley’s lifetime is well known. Apart from Marley, The Wailers have performed with international acts such as Sting, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, as well as reggae legends Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Burning Spear. Their most recent collaborators include Kenny Chesney,

Eve, Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. They’ve also completed numerous tours over the years, playing to an estimated 24 million people across the globe, including ground-breaking performances in Africa and the Far East. » The anchor of the band is Aston “Family Man” Barrett, who in addition to being Marley’s most trusted lieutenant, played on countless other classic reggae hits throughout the 1970s. The authenticity he brings to The Wailers’ sound is indisputable, and yet today’s line-up combines old school know-how with lead vocals from one of Jamaica’s most exciting singers, Kevin “Yvad” Davy.

CALIFORNIA&MONTREAL GUITARTRIOS saturday »

APRIL 18 » 8pm

The ASC is known for bringing unique artists to Birmingham, and this performance is no exception. » The evening will feature six virtuoso guitarists from California Guitar Trio (CGT) and Montreal Guitar Trio (MG3) performing arrangements of classical works and innovative takes on rock standards. Can you imagine surf music next to psychedelic, classical music next to Spaghetti Western themes, and Pink Floyd next to Bach? This performance is sure to be a delightful experience for any music enthusiast. » Collectively, they represent four countries and fuse over 40 years of combined performing experience into one unique six-by-six-string “phenomensemble.” » In a pleasantly surprising way, CGT’s steel stringed-guitars blend naturally with MG3'’s nylon-stringed guitars, as each trio’s fret boards chase the other’s original compositions and new

arrangements of progressive rock, jazz, and classical music. » The California Guitar Trio’s relentless passion for following the muse has served it well. The acoustic group’s multi-genre explorations have driven 14 albums and nearly 1,500 gigs across its 22-year career – all with an everexpanding audience. » When it comes to bridging diverse genres of music, Montreal Guitar Trio, which Canadian Broadcast Company described as “the hottest guitar ensemble in Canada,” has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with. For over 15 years, the trio's virtuosity, rigour, creativity, and impressive stage presence – where humor and interacting with the public go hand in hand – have been winning over audiences around the world. » Join us for an unforgettable evening of amazing artistry as we welcome these talented guitarists to the ASC.

DIANAKRALL monday »

APRIL 20 » 7pm

We are honored to have Diana Krall return to the ASC to showcase her latest album, Wallflower – a tremendously refreshing and collaborative effort that reflects Krall in a gorgeous new light. » This five-time Grammy-winning jazz pianist and vocalist is one of the most accomplished and distinctive musicians in the world today. Respected far and wide as a wildly successful recording and performing artist, Krall remains a true musical force. At any given moment she could be producing Barbra Streisand’s new album, serving as musical director/arranger for Paul McCartney, or hitting the road for a good cause with Neil Young. » Krall has sold more albums than any other female jazz artist of the last 30 years, establishing herself as one of the most beloved performers of her

generation, one whose recordings thus far have earned her nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. » On Wallflower, Krall’s stunning and surprising new album for Verve Records, this world-class player has handed over a little control to 16-time Grammy winning producer David Foster in order to do something unexpected. On the new album she has recorded a collection of songs from the 1960 to present day. Krall sings a set of songs that include classics like The Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreaming” and the Eagles’ “Desperado,” along with favorite vintage songs by Krall’s musical heroes, Bob Dylan and Elton John. » Diana Krall’s return to the Jemison Stage on the Wallflower tour will be a treasure to enjoy and remember. A legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-Gris, introducing to the world his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock, and Creole roots. Several of his
