to another dynamic season at UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center,

the heart of arts and culture in the state of Alabama. At the ASC, we continually strive to

diversify our programming, explore innovative art forms and bring the world’s most cutting-edge artists to our audiences. We believe that our stellar lineup for Winter/Spring 2016 reflects an ever-changing artistic landscape. » While each new season is an opportunity for growth and change at the ASC, one thing remains the same: our commitment to serving our community. The ASC and its education initiative, ArtPlay, are dedicated to promoting the transformative power of the arts, inspiring a passion for the arts across all social boundaries, and serving children and families by providing free educational and outreach programs. » An exciting change for the UAB family is the arrival of a new leader for the ASC to help us build upon our successes and further our mission. Anna M. Thompson, who recently was named executive director of the ASC, will take the helm on December 1. Anna comes to UAB from the University of Notre Dame, where she served for eight years as executive director of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center and the Judd and Mary Lou Leighton director for the performing arts. We hope you will help us give her and her husband a warm welcome to town. » As you peruse this magazine and read about the internationally acclaimed artists in the Winter/Spring 2016 lineup, you will discover new opportunities we are offering ASC members as a “thank you” for their unwavering support. Members not only enjoy an enhanced experience when they attend an event at the ASC, but they also realize the joy of giving back – because their dollars help support the ASC and ArtPlay’s efforts to make the arts accessible to everyone in our community. » Birmingham is known for its generous philanthropy, and there is no better example of fundraising at the ASC than the annual VIVA HEALTH Starlight Gala. The 2016 Gala is sure to be the icing on the cake for our Winter/ Spring season, as it features a wildly popular Broadway star – the Tony- and Emmy Award-winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth. This Gala will serve as the official commencement of the ASC’s 20th Anniversary Season. We would like to extend a special and heartfelt “thank you” to Betty McMahon for serving as Honorary Gala Chair for the ASC’s largest fundraiser and one of Birmingham’s grandest philanthropic events. » We at the ASC appreciate your loyal patronage and look forward to seeing you in Winter/Spring 2016. Your support ensures that the ASC will continue to reach greater heights in arts programming and education.

LIZZWRIGHT

With her rich and smoky vocals, regal poise and songs that elude definition, there’s no question as to why she will be returning to the ASC. Since her last visit in 2009, Wright has released two albums, the most recent being Freedom and Surrender, produced by Grammy-winning producer Larry Klein. » Initially the album was supposed to be a disc of mostly cover songs, centered on the theme of the circuitous dance of love. Instead, it became the opposite, yielding captivating originals such as “Lean In,” “Real Life Painting” and “Right Where You Are.”» This Georgia native has taken the jazz world by storm with her trademark combination of jazz, folk, gospel and soul. Wright has been called the most gifted interpretive vocalist of her generation. Her dynamic soul is illuminated by the layers of passion and playfulness in her music. Don’t miss Lizz Wright as she lights up the Jemison Concert Hall this season.

MELISSAETHERIDGE

The ASC will be rocking a little harder this season when Melissa Etheridge comes to town. Known for her iconic raspy voice, profound lyrics and powerhouse performances, the Grammy-winning artist will shine as she takes the stage solo. » Creating her new album, This is M.E., proved an inspiring, electrifying experience for Melissa, the best kind of challenge. These are songs right from her heart, and they are the most intimate, emotional, personal, lump-in-the-throat notes of her entire career. » Make no mistake — this solo tour is not one of those cozy, intimate, strum-and-hum affairs. “The solo tour is not just me sitting on a stool singing, I’m using a little bit of technology by creating loops in front of people … I have all my guitars lined up. I play piano. I do some drumbeats in some of the songs. It’s just really fun.” » Come see Melissa as she performs songs from her new album, as well as some of her greatest hits such as “Come to My Window,” “I’m the Only One” and “I Want to Come Over.” This will be a show that people will be talking about all year. Don’t miss out on the conversation, and get your tickets today!

MARCBROUSSARD

Channeling the spirits of classic R&B, rock and soul into contemporary terms, Mark Broussard brings his Louisiana heart to Birmingham to help us celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! Known for his sultry voice and mesmerizing guitar instrumentations, Broussard will charm you with the authentic sounds heard through his music. » Marc released his first album, Momentary Setback, at the age of 20 in 2002. However, his talent was no secret before then. At the age of 5, Marc hopped on stage with his father’s band and belted out “Johnny B. Goode,” and he has been tapped as a talent to watch since. » NPR describes his voice “like a 40-year-old man who’s been knocked down and got up more times than he can remember.” While Broussard describes himself as “a white boy singing soul music,” he draws his inspiration from his Acadian roots and musical family. Growing up his house was filled with the sounds of such past ASC favorites as Chick Corea and George Benson, all from his father’s album collection. » If you are looking for a dirt-and-grit vibe of south Louisiana this St. Patrick’s Day, get your tickets to see Marc Broussard and get ready to move!

JOANBAEZ

A musical force of nature, she unselfconsciously introduced Bob Dylan to the world in 1963, marched on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement with Martin Luther King Jr., inspired Vaclav Havel to fight for a Czech Republic, and participated in two of the early Amnesty International tours – the Conspiracy of Hope tour in 1986 and the Human Rights Now! tour in 1988. She brought the Free Speech Movement into the spotlight at Berkeley, took to the fields with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers, organized resistance to the war in Southeast Asia, then 40 years later saluted the Dixie Chicks for their courage to protest war. » Baez’s earliest recordings fed a host of traditional ballads into 1960s rock. Many songs that she introduced on her early LPs found their way into the rock vernacular: “House of the Rising Sun” (The Animals), “John Riley” (The Byrds), “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” (Led Zeppelin), “What Have They Done to the Rain” (The Searchers), “Jackaroe” (Grateful Dead) and “Long Black Veil” (The Band), to name a few. She quickly began to focus awareness on songwriters ranging from Woody Guthrie, Dylan, Phil Ochs and Richard Fariña and continues to do so to this day. » Baez is arguably the world’s most famous female folk singer, known for her distinctive, sweeping soprano and her accomplished interpretive skills. This ASC presented performance will be one to remember. With enough songs to play for days, Baez will be here for one night only, so get your tickets today!

“We feel comfortable not knowing exactly where we're headed,” says Red Baraat’s founder and bandleader, Sunny Jain. “We’re very much about trying things and taking risks. Sometimes it doesn’t work," he laughs, “and sometimes we stumble upon things that are really exciting.” » Red Baraat might not know exactly where they are going, but they are headed back to the ASC this spring, and it’s something to be excited about! » The Brooklyn-based band members draw on North Indian rhythms, hip-hop, funk and New Orleans-style jazz to create a unique sound that is so powerful, it has placed the band in its own unique and enviable class. And that sound can unquestionably only be considered party music. » As the band evolves, so does its music. Its latest album, Gaadi of Truth, conceptually and lyrically reflects the band’s experiences. IRA GLASS, MONICA BILL BARNES & ANNA BASS Ira Glass, host of This American Life, and Monica Bill Barnes & Company have been working together to combine two art forms that – as Ira puts it – “have no business being together – dance and radio.” The result is a funny, lively and heartfelt evening of dance and stories that has brought down the house wherever it’s been performed, starting with its first test run at Carnegie Hall in 2013. » The show includes radio interviews restaged as dance pieces, plus stories from the lives of each of the three performers, Ira Glass, Monica Bill Barnes and Anna Bass. “What makes it work is a shared sensibility,” Glass says. “As dancers, Monica and Anna are these amazingly relatable and funny storytellers without words.” Bass notes, “I think it’s still blowing Ira’s mind to see some of the radio pieces remade this way, with props and costume changes and lighting cues.” Barnes adds, “Combining these art forms has led to a show that’s unlike anything I’ve ever choreographed before.” » As the title indicates, the show is in three acts. Act one is about the job of being a performer. Act two: falling in love and what it means to stay in love. Act three: nothing lasts forever. “People who like This American Life will probably like this,” Glass says, “because it’s just like the radio show, um, if you picture dancing during all the stories.”

HERMÈS QUARTET YOUNG CONCERT ARTISTS SERIES

The ASC is pleased to present the Paris-based Hermès Quartet, an internationally acclaimed foursome the The Washington Post says “will likely take their place among the top quartets of our time.” The members of the Quartet — violinists Omer Bouchez and Elise Liu, violist Yung-Hsin Lou Chang and cellist Anthony Kondo — met L to R: Omer Bouchez, Elise Liu, Yung-Hsin Lou Chang, & Anthony Kondo at the Lyon Conservatory and formed the ensemble in 2008. Since then, it has performed in some of the most prestigious European venues. The Quartet was the winner of the 2012 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and made its U.S. debuts to rave reviews at the opening concerts of the Young Concert Artists Series at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall and the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater. In the U.S., the group has given recitals at the Lied Center of Kansas, the University of Georgia and the Friends of Chamber Music in Texas. The Quartet currently holds the Helen F. Whitaker Chamber Music Chair of YCA and the Florence Gould Foundation Fellowship, and is the Artist-in-Residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Brussels.

CHORO DE LÁ PRA CÁ ASC’s ArtPlay presents Choro de Lá pra Cá! The group’s name means “choro from here to there” which represents a mixture of all the musicians’ backgrounds – Diogo Guanabara on mandolin, cavaquinho and guitar, a specialist in choro; Caio Padilha on guitar, rabeca and vocals, from the Northeast; Julie Koidin on flute, who is not only classically trained, but also a music specialist. This performance will also feature guest L to R: Diogo Guanabara, Caio Padilha & Julie Koidin vocalist Camila Masiso. » The trio started when flutist Koidin visited Natal, Brazil, in 2014 in order to research contemporary choro. Choro is a popular Brazilian instrumental music genre that originated in 19th century Rio de Janeiro. » The musical chemistry between the musicians was immediate. Their connection shows in their unique music interpretation and the group’s own compositions and those of its contemporaries. A little bossa, samba, choro and jazz – all mixed together. » Don’t miss this special and cultural performance at our historic ArtPlay house!

Gaston, the grandson of slaves, left behind a fortune of millions and an incredible business empire, and was deemed as a hero second to none. Audiences who experience this production will not only leave the theatre knowing more about Gaston’s contributions to society … they will leave with a smile in their hearts.

ROOTS MUSIC: ANTO THEINTROBLUES What tunes inspired your favorite musicians? Where did that beat in your favorite rock song originate? What is the blues? » This interactive music experience for the whole family shines a light on how the blues and Americana came to be such beloved music genres. Featuring the music of Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry and Blind Boy Johnson, this performance isn’t just a delight for your ears, but also a real treat for the historian in all of us. Each song is a history lesson. » Spend a little time exploring the blues with Bruce Andrews on harmonica and vocals, George Dudley on guitar, Dave Gowens on percussion, Jack Dudley on bass and Steve Ramos on drums. These wonderful musicians and teaching artists are true storytellers. You won’t be singing the blues when you leave this performance of ArtPlay Presents Roots Music.
