UAB’s Alys Stephens Center Twenty years of arts and education in our community. The arts nourish the soul. They sustain, comfort and inspire. There is nothing quite like that exquisite moment when you first discover the beauty of connecting with others in celebration of larger ideals and shared wisdom. Since opening our doors in 1996, that is precisely what the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center is all about — providing access to experiences that reach beyond sights and sounds and color and space, to create moments and memories that bring about positive change in the lives of individuals, families, students, artists, performers and everyone who comes into contact with the Center. We are a place where the entire community embraces life through the arts. In September 1996, the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center was founded on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a lasting tribute to the late Mrs. Alys Robinson Stephens, a lifelong patron of the arts and a well-known and beloved member of the Birmingham community. The Alys Stephens Center became the home of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra as well as UAB’s Department of Music and Department of Theatre. The Center quickly became the center for entertainment and arts education in Birmingham and central Alabama and has established itself as the premier center for arts and education in the area with more than 100,000 visitors annually. One of the most important elements of the ASC story is our collective opportunity to establish and grow community — not only among the people around us, but also within the larger, more esoteric meaning of the word. It’s about pride in ownership and infusing a sense of civic opportunity and responsibility in all that we do. It’s about people, performers, professors and more. We are a community of caring, likeminded, kindred spirits who come together with the common goal to inspire, educate, entertain and encourage one another to reach their full potential. We are a community in the most basic and tangible sense of the word, and together we are driven to even more. As the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s performing arts center, we are proud to serve as a bridge to the arts for the community. We educate and entertain – come and experience the arts at the Alys Stephens Center.

Suessical Jr., ArtPlay drama camp
Connecting the Arts in Our Community The arts are paramount at the Alys Stephens Center. There is no question about our commitment to excellence in our programming and performances. The fundamental truth that sets the Center apart from other arts organizations in our city and state is the depth and breadth of the connections, shared experiences and education we provide.
ARTPLAY encompasses all of the Center’s community education initiatives. We provide lifelong learning through the arts to members of our community of all ages, incomes and geographical areas. Currently we serve Blount, Shelby and Jefferson counties. At the ARTPLAY HOUSE we provide modestly priced classes for students of all ages to explore the arts and find their inner artist. Whether African drumming, piano, voice, ballet or beginning ukulele, there is something for everyone. Summertime brings weeklong drama camps for kids – and all of these activities end with a show for family and friends performed on one of the Alys Stephens Center’s stages. Register for classes at AlysStephens.org/connect. 28

About the University of Alabama at Birmingham
Our story is one of remarkable growth in size, quality, reputation and impact. From humble beginnings as an extension center, UAB — which became an autonomous campus in 1969 — has grown to offer 149 degree programs in Arts & Sciences, Business, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry and Public Health. We have helped transform Birmingham into a nexus of medicine, business, research and development with a thriving arts and cultural scene, and our 21st century campus channels all the energies and opportunities of its metropolitan home. This dynamic living and learning environment inspires and nurtures achievement, social responsibility and enterprise, and UAB embodies a spirit of discovery that advances knowledge, solves real-world problems and drives economic development. UAB’s 86-block campus channels all the energies and opportunities of Birmingham, a metropolitan city of some 1.2 million and a thriving nexus of medicine, banking, business and research and development nestled in the serene foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It borders the historic Five Points and Lakeshore districts, with their eclectic mix of restaurants, cafes and live music venues, and it is minutes from cultural, outdoor and leisure attractions.

2016-17 Season
The Campus Green is at the heart of UAB’s pedestrian-friendly campus, anchored by an award-winning recreation center, dining commons and residence halls, and several mini parks create oases of green on this urban campus. UAB is home to an exciting Cultural Arts District, anchored by the Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts, which hosts UAB student productions and performances, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and premier artists from around the world. Across the street is the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, UAB’s new home for art instruction and professional galleries, which provides innovative opportunities for education, sharing the outstanding work of our faculty and students and attracting acclaimed artists to UAB. The William Hansell and Susan Mabry Hulsey Center for Arts and Humanities, with amenities that include state-of-the art music-technology labs, recording studios and a recital hall, affords music students broad, balanced instruction from a faculty that includes numerous world-renown scholars and performers. UAB’s impact on education, health care and quality of life cuts across classes, cultures and continents into inner-city classrooms, rural clinics and far corners of the globe, and our highly diverse faculty and students are embraced as citizens of the world. Our strategic plan, UAB21, is our pledge to prepare our students and community for the challenges of a new world economy: global literacy, biotechnology and biomedical science, energy, transportation, materials engineering, information technology, computing security and entrepreneurship. These goals are fueling record enrollments, attracting exceptional faculty and strengthening community partnerships. We approach the future with the same audacious vision that led our founders to dream big dreams and commit to this mission: To educate, advance research and discovery, care for the sick, respond to the needs of our community and use knowledge to establish Alabama as a progressive economic center that can change the world.

We are constantly looking for new and innovative opportunities to inspire and educate through the power of the arts. ALABAMA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has entertained audiences for more than 90 years, playing a variety of classical and popular music and hosting performances by some of the finest guest musicians in the world. For the ASO’s full schedule, visit alabamasymphony.org. “Great acoustics are only one of the many reasons why we consider ourselves fortunate to call the Alys Stephens Center the ‘Home of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.’ It is a pleasure to work with the dedicated and professional Alys Stephens Center team to bring great musical performances to our community each season.” – Curt Long, President, Alabama Symphony Orchestra
UAB DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE The UAB Department of Theatre (DOT) is a production-oriented undergraduate program coupled with a comprehensive academic curriculum that is rooted in a liberal arts education. The mission is to develop the intellectual rigor, cultural appreciation and aesthetic sophistication of graduates. Upon completion of the selected degree program, students are prepared to pursue a profession in theater or film, enter an advanced training program, or utilize their knowledge and skills in other artistic, educational or administrative fields. For more information visit uab.edu/theatre. UAB DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC The UAB Department of Music (DOM), with 18 regular and 30 adjunct faculty, offers firstclass music learning and performance experiences within a liberal arts curriculum.
