HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE
TAKE A COURSE OR EARN A CREDENTIAL
Welcome to Extension’s Program Guide for Fall 2016. Browse through this Guide for an overview of the programs that Extension offers and find the one that is right for you.
Most Extension programs and courses do not require our part-time students to apply for admission before registering for courses. If you want to register in a course for general interest, or if you want to “test-drive” a course or two in a program before applying to earn the credential, in most cases you are encouraged to do so. Consult the Qualifications and Admission / Open Registration section in each program description in this Guide to find out the basic requirements.
When you decide on a program, visiting our website is a quick way to find out more about the courses offered, class schedules, tuition and fees, how to register, and more. Our website, www.extension.ualberta.ca, has a robust search engine and course database, so finding out what you want to know is just a few keystrokes away. Each program description also has an email address and telephone contact number, so remember that we are always here to answer your questions or concerns. Our Extension Student Services Office representatives are also ready to get you registered or provide more information: Call 780.492.3116.
Most of our programs and classes do not require a degree or previous post-secondary education–just a desire to learn and explore the possibilities that a commitment to lifelong learning can bring.

WE’RE EXTENSION – ANYTHING BUT TYPICAL! The people of Extension – students, instructors, faculty and staff – are anything but typical. They come from such diverse backgrounds, so many walks of life, and have such a wide variety of personal interests and individual goals, there is no way to say that anyone is “typical” at Extension. Extension students are adult learners with busy lives who need flexible, part-time study offered in a variety of learning formats. Extension courses are offered in evening, weekend, classroom, online, and blended formats to meet those needs. If the people of Extension share one thing in common, it’s a passion for continuing education, professional development, and lifelong learning. We all share the desire and the commitment to keep learning, growing, and achieving. In this issue of the new Program Guide, we’re pleased to introduce you to two students who exemplify that the people of Extension are “anything but typical”!
BEING THE MIDDLEWOMAN Business Analysis program helped Suzelle embark on a new career path In her previous life as an administrator, Suzelle Umeobieri often felt that the software packages she depended upon to do her job were far from optimal. Instead of responding like most of us — silently cursing the offending software — she would build mental lists of things that could be better: an extra item in this drop-down menu, a new checkbox here, a user-friendlier button there… “I’ve always liked to play around with the idea of bridging the gap between what we need as end users and what IT offers to us,” she remembers. What she didn’t know is that this gap-bridging role was actually a career path. Better yet: a career path for which you don’t necessarily need an IT background.
CHRISTOPHER TOM DATS Operations Supervisor, City of Edmonton Management Development Certificate (2015) Currently pursuing the Human Resources Management Certificate
CONFIDENCE TO MOVE UP Investing in business education paid off for Christopher Tom Christopher Tom was quite happy with the first job he got after graduating from a Bachelor of Arts program. Working as a driver for DATS (Disabled Adult Transit Service), he felt privileged to be part of a very special and much-needed service. “I loved the clients and the support that we provided to them,” he says. Then one day a PD event he attended reminded him of how much he used to enjoy his university days. “I remember thinking, oh yeah, this is something I really like doing.” That eureka moment led him to enrol in the Management Development Certificate. The classes helped quench his thirst for learning and had a bonus side effect: from then on, it was one promotion after another for Christopher.
“The role of business analysts is to understand what the user needs so that they can convey that to the programmers. The B.A. is basically a middleman,” explains Suzelle, who now advocates for end users in her role as a B.A. “To do that, you may or may not be a programmer, but you definitely need experience in business.” Suzelle found out about the Business Analysis Citation a few years ago and decided to give it a shot. “I loved the program, and it definitely helped me to get a job in the area,” she says. “The schedules are flexible, so it’s totally doable while you’re holding a full-time job. For example, you can choose to take a condensed class and complete a 39-hour course over two weekends. It’s brutal when you’re going through it, but it allows you to finish the program in a short amount of time.” In 2014, Suzelle started to work toward her second U of A credential, Extension’s Information Technology Management Certificate. “I thought it would be a good idea, now that I’m surrounded by programmers in my job,” she laughs. “ The flexibility of the schedules is perfect: for most classes, you can decide which works for you the best.”
The knowledge and credential acquired through the program were an important part of the mix fueling his career’s take-off. “The classes open your eyes to other perspectives and allow you to become more well-rounded, to make better judgement calls,” he says. Equally important, however, was the confidence he built during his studies: “Participating in discussions with supervisors and managers allowed me to see that I could work on the same level as them.” A few drivers in Christopher’s workplace have approached him, wondering how he got to his position so fast. His answer to them is to recommend the Management Development Certificate: “If you’re looking to move up, it’s a great first step.” “ The instructors are very knowledgeable and bring real-world experiences to the classes.”
