Hokkaido-Alberta Dairy Science & Technique Exchange Association’s 40th Birthday
Katy Campbell (Dean of Extension), Mimi Hui (Executive Director, ELP) and Mark Bell (Program Assistant, ELP) were invited to the 40th anniversary celebration of the Hokkaido-Alberta Dairy Science & Technique Exchange Association. Over three meeting-packed days in Ebetsu, Hokkaido, the group of three met with the President of Rakuno Gakuen University and many RGU professors who have visited the University of Alberta.
The ceremony of celebration was held at the Hokkaido Garden Palace Hotel and many dignitaries and diary farm owners attended the event. The group learned that Hokkaido cheese actually beat the French by winning the first prize at a renown cheese tasting event.

Many RGU students who have studies at the ELP and participated in the Farm Stay program coordinated by the Olds College were at the ceremony. A few brave souls made a formal presentation of their farm stay experience in Alberta. Their cultural experience truly reflected the primary goals of these exchanges -- these RGU students engaged fully in the Canadian farming communities and were given the opportunity to apply the concepts and theories from school to the field.

This is the third year the English Language Program (ELP) has sent instructors to CFAU. The primary objective of this initiative is to prepare and help the IPP students improve their language skills, which are vital for undergraduate studies. The majority of the IPP students will join the University of Alberta in the coming September. In fact, some of Torie’s and Priscila’s students got a head start and came to Edmonton in early July to take EAP classes for the summer term. IPP Graduates and Staff – July 2013

English, Science, Street Performers and Shakespeare… The Ho Fung College Students did them all!
We were excited to welcome 21 high school students and 3 chaperones from Ho Fung College, our very first summer cohort from Hong Kong, to participate in our English Language & Cultural Seminar (ELCS) in July. The group had an action‐packed 2 weeks in Edmonton. The students spent week 1 doing intensive English language studies at the English Language Program (ELP), and week 2 in summer camps—some joined DiscoverE (Faculty of Engineering), and others a Computing Science summer camp. In between, they spent their weekend in the Rockies, going up to the glaciers and hiking down canyons. In addition, they went to almost every festival they could after class, including the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival and Freewill Shakespeare Festival. All this they did within 2 weeks… or as King Lear might have said, “Within a fortnight!”
