If you have a flair for making a house a home, if you like living environments that reflect a homeowner’s story and style, you may want to consider pursuing studies in residential interiors. Our student body is diverse, from recent high-school graduates to individuals seeking a career change. Some characteristics common to our students are a keen interest in fashion and home décor, good spatial perception, and the ability to work well with all types of people.

TRANSFERABILITY
Many of our graduates have established their own businesses; others have been employed in roles such as interior decorating consultant, manufacturer’s representative, and retail consultant.
• As a Residential Interiors student, you may apply for admission to the University of Alberta’s B.Sc. in Human Ecology (major in clothing, textiles and material culture) and, if accepted into that program, have core Residential Interiors credits apply toward a minor in interiors.
Graduates from the Residential Interiors program qualify to join the Certified Interior Design Association of Alberta (CIDAA, www.cidaa.ca), an organization that provides members with enhanced business visibility and credibility, networking, and professional development opportunities.

• To obtain credit for work done at other institutions, contact our program office at 780.492.3034. Exemption credit is only available for core courses and will be considered upon review of course credit or a Portfolio Review or both, to a maximum of two courses. Please note that a course exemption fee will apply.
Students in the Residential Interiors Certificate program with satisfactory academic standing are eligible for the Ella May Walker Memorial Award, a $500 annual award with applications due in June of each year. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

3 electives
This part-time program is comprised of six core courses and three electives. Each course is 39 hours in length, for a total of 351 instructional hours.
At this rate, the certificate can be earned in less than two years. There is a six-year time limit for program completion.
Typical course load is one course each term, three terms a year. When following this structure, the program is completed in three years. This pace can be accelerated by taking up to three courses at a time once the introductory course is completed.
A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).

QUALIFICATIONS & ADMISSION
COURSES OFFERED
Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to earn the certificate. Your application may be submitted before, during, or after completing the course Introduction to Residential Interiors, but you must apply before commencing your second course.
You can register for a course without enrolling in the program, as long as course prerequisites are met. If you take the course Introduction to Residential Interiors and then decide to apply for the full program, the course will be applied toward your certificate.
To enrol, you must have a high school diploma (minimum 100 credits) or equivalent, including English 30. If you attended a high school in Alberta, transcripts may be ordered from Alberta Education at 780.427.5732; if you attended high school outside of Alberta, contact the provincial department of education. You are still invited to apply if you do not meet the admission requirements. Your qualifications will be reviewed, and conditional entrance may be granted. INTRODUCTION TO RESIDENTIAL INTERIORS – EXRI 4676
COLOUR THEORY AND APPLICATION – EXRI 4678
Prerequisite to all other courses in the program
Explore the complexities of colour and gain an understanding of its function, subjectivity, and application. Learn basic light and colour theories, colour harmony schemes, and colour mixing with acrylic paint. Develop and apply a colour plan and understand the implications of colour for the selection of residential interior materials, as well as the psychological properties of colour and colour forecasting and trends.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Residential Interiors (EXRI 4676)
Gain an understanding of residential interior design theories, processes, and styles through a balance of the aesthetic and the technical. Learn basic design elements and principles, client needs assessment, articulation of the design process, identification of domestic styles, career options, scope of practice, and the role of consultants.
BASIC DRAWING, DRAFTING, AND PRESENTATION – EXRI 4677
PRODUCTS AND FINISHES – EXRI 4680
Prerequisite: Introduction to Residential Interiors (EXRI 4676)
Develop creativity skills for the effective application of products and materials in decorating residential interiors. Gain an awareness of the function and aesthetics of material and understand the elements of good design as it relates to the principles of material use. Topics include the function and application of finishes in residential interiors, the durability and maintenance of material, and how to determine interior finishes for permanent, semi, or non-permanent elements, including window coverings, lighting, and accessories.
Prerequisite: Colour Theory and Application (EXRI 4678)
Develop basic skills in drawing, drafting, and presentation relevant to the field of interior decorating. This intensive course features hands-on application of theory. Learn basic line-drawing and modeled-drawing techniques, basic drafting tools and techniques, three-dimensional subjects and translation of these into two-dimensional images, as well as presentation techniques for portfolios and client proposals. Note: materials for this course may cost around an additional $450.

SPACE PLANNING – EXRI 4679 Prerequisite: Basic Drawing, Drafting, and Presentation (EXRI 4677) Expand your space planning knowledge and skills in this hands-on course that builds on basic research techniques and fundamental theories of residential interior decorating. Learn how to apply client needs assessment research and problemsolving techniques including human/spatial considerations in design, schematics, and preliminary planning. Explore design concepts of furniture grouping, functional layouts for individual rooms, room groupings, and storage areas, as well as basic residential structural, mechanical, and electrical system diagrams.
BUSINESS PRACTICE – EXRI 4681 Prerequisites: must have completed all other core courses Develop the necessary tools to market interior decorating services and/or products effectively within the residential decorating industry using good business and project management practices. Learn the process of starting and growing a residential interior decorating business including marketing skills for establishing a clientele base. Explore the steps on finding tools and design sources, selling products and services, avoiding legal problems, establishing fees for services and other basic business practices relevant to the field of residential interiors. Practical aspects of employment in the industry will also be covered.

ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING – EXART 3904
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION – EXRI 4683
Architectural drawing is invaluable in developing and communicating design ideas. Experience architecture’s creative aspects and decode its visual language by learning how to think spatially. See spaces in new ways and sketch what you see with accuracy by applying the rules of perspective and the fundamental skills of proportion and scale, space and volume, and materials and textures. Suitable for beginners and experienced artists alike.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Residential Interiors (EXRI 4676) Focus on residential wood frame construction as well as the legal requirements of construction as defined by the Alberta Building Code. Although designed for individuals with little or no construction knowledge, this course is a valuable review for those who already have building experience. We will explore basic blueprint reading, interpretation of structural and architectural drawings, construction techniques and basic estimation. Other topics include an overview of manufacturers and use of structural materials, aging problems, limits on design and construction, and safety for the occupant.
COMPUTER-ASSISTED DESIGN (CAD) – EXRI 3510 Prerequisite: Basic Drawing, Drafting and Presentation (EXRI 4677)
Writing for Residential Interiors Students Developing clear, professional and informative written communication is a necessary skill for interior decorators for marketing and in dealing with clients, colleagues, and suppliers. The Residential Interiors program includes written assignments, and it is expected that students are able to express their research and ideas through well-written papers, project text pieces, and assignments.
Visualizing space in three dimensions is critical to the success of an interior decorator/designer. Learn SketchUp, a prominent 3D design software that interfaces with its users through a familiar pencil-and-paper paradigm. Find out how to evaluate scale, proportion, colour, and texture. Learn to quickly generate everything from rough concepts to working drawings and construction documents for production. Most successful architectural firms with interior design or decoration departments employ SketchUp software. Note: Students entering this course should have experience working with computers and possess a working knowledge of manual drafting.
DESIGN STUDIO – EXRI 4685

Prerequisites: Space Planning (EXRI 4679) and Products and Finishes (EXRI 4680) Develop your portfolio and apply the knowledge learned from core courses of the Residential Interiors program by undertaking a major interior design project. A systematic approach toward design development will be taught through a series of in-class and take-home exercises.
GREEN DESIGN – EXRI 3588 Green Design represents a transformation in the industry where interior design can make a significant contribution to the development of environmentally sensitive buildings. Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to meet client demands for greener and healthier interiors, without compromising the quality and integrity of your designs.

HISTORY OF RESIDENTIAL FURNISHINGS – EXRI 4682
LIGHTING – EXRI 4697
Explore the history of furniture and interior decoration from Greek and Roman classics through the 18th century to the present. Examine the relationship of art, architecture and the decorative arts in interiors within the context of larger historical events. In this course we will cover major furniture styles and interior design from the classical to the present in Europe and North America; historical characteristics that are repeated in contemporary interior decoration; the relationship of art, architecture and the decorative arts to historical furniture and interior decorating styles; and social, political and economic forces that influenced the periods of interior design styles.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Residential Interiors (EXRI 4676) Explore the principles of lighting and its specifications, and learn about different types of lighting, including light sources and fixtures and how the application of lighting affects the atmosphere of spaces. Gain an understanding of how to read a reflected ceiling plan and create one to aid in the implementation of lighting in your project. You will discover how lighting controls in spaces can improve design and energy consumption. We will further explore lighting by visiting lighting showrooms.
SURFACE & TEXTILE DESIGN – EXRI 3597
NEW LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (LEED) GREEN BUILDING STRATEGIES AND GREEN ASSOCIATE EXAM PREPARATION - EXERM 4283 (39 hours) OFFERED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CANADA GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL (CaGBC). This course provides a comprehensive overview of techniques, approaches, materials and technologies used in creating green buildings and communities while also preparing students for the LEED Green Associate Exam. The need for a green transformation of our built environment will be described as well as the key components of the LEED rating systems and the overall LEED certificate process. The concepts and strategies that can be used to meet the requirements of the LEED rating system will be identified and students will learn how to determine the LEED rating system that applies to various types of green building projects.
Strongly recommended: Colour Theory and Application (EXRI 4678) Do you have a passion for fabric, colour, texture, and patterns? Unleash your creativity by learning various methods of designing pattern, printing, and dyeing textiles. We will look at traditional methods of textile design such as batik, shibori, and silk painting. You will be guided through the steps in designing textiles from visualization and inspiration to exploring various methods and combining different techniques to transform fiber into expressive artwork.
UNIVERSAL DESIGN – EXRI 3499 Extend your understanding of design by learning the principles and art of universal design or “inclusive design.” You will come to think of design in new ways by becoming aware of the impact universal design has had on the past, present, and future of residential housing design. We will focus on maximizing utility with the ultimate goal of looking at design projects that accommodate people’s needs, regardless of age, ability, or circumstance.
For more information about LEED Credentials, please visit the CaGBC website at www.cagbc.org. If you are interested in pursuing LEED accreditation, this course enables you to take the preparatory course for certificate elective credit. Please note that successful completion of the course does not guarantee that students will pass the Green Associate Exam; and failure of the LEED Green Associate Exam will not mean automatic failure of this course. Also note that the course fee does not entitle the student to write the LEED AP Exam.

Typical course load is one course per term, three terms a year. When following this structure, students can fulfill the certificate requirements within four to five years. This pace can be accelerated by attending two courses per term; at this rate, the certificate can be earned in three years.
This part-time program has three study streams, enabling students to specialize in watercolour, painting, or drawing. Each stream is comprised of nine core courses and 60 credit hours of electives, in addition to two portfolio reviews.

QUALIFICATIONS & ADMISSION
TUITION, FEES & SUPPLIES
Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to earn the certificate. You may apply for admission right at the beginning or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses.
• A one-time application fee of $100 is required for admission into the program. • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes; courses are GST-exempt. • Unless specified in the course description, art supplies and textbooks are not included in course fees. Costs range from $100 to $150 for introductory courses and up to $200 for advanced courses. • In most cases, students are responsible for purchasing their own art supplies. Relevant material lists are supplied for individual courses, and students should not purchase material prior to receiving this list. Instructors will typically discuss art supplies on the first day of class.
To enrol, you must have a high school diploma (minimum 100 credits) or equivalent. If you attended a high school in Alberta, transcripts may be ordered from Alberta Education at 780.427.5732; if you attended high school outside of Alberta, contact the provincial department of education. You are still invited to apply if you do not meet the admission requirements. Your qualifications will be reviewed, and conditional entrance may be granted. Gain an appreciation of the western art history canon from early 14th century art to the modern art of the 20th century. Acquire a working knowledge of art history terminology as you explore various art movements by examining pivotal works and their artists. Please note that coursework includes written assignments.

DRAWING I – EXART 3005 Drawing is one of the cornerstones of art training and is fundamental for visual arts. Learn the essentials of drawing from observation. Employing pencil, conté, or charcoal on paper, class projects use still-life motifs to introduce you to the basic elements of drawing line, form, tone, and texture. Develop your awareness of seeing and understanding the factors that work in good picture-making and apply them to produce a finished drawing.
Build on your skills from Drawing I and further explore the fundamental elements of line, shape, texture, space, tonal value, and compositional principles and considerations such as figure-ground relationships, rhythm, and scale. Employing dry and wet media on paper, projects will focus on observational drawing from still-life and the human figure. While emphasis will be on representational drawing, achromatic linear, and tonal value studies, the use of colour, abstraction, and collage will be introduced.
VISUAL ART & DESIGN I – EXART 3003 What do all art forms have in common? How do artists use the elements of design to help develop and unify their work and ideas? Explore these questions and others in this introduction to art and design fundamentals. The characteristics of line, shape, texture, colour, and space are emphasized through examples, demonstrations, discussion, and visual problem-solving, as well as studio work with pencil, pen and ink, and acrylics. Enhance your appreciation of art and the process that facilitates it.

Develop your knowledge of perspective to accurately draw facades of buildings, room interiors, and landscape compositions. Perspective is a tool often learned and then forgotten, but understanding perspective is invaluable in art to give life and concreteness to form. Principles of perspective will be discussed, with an emphasis on the perceptual understanding of form as we see it. We will examine line, tone, compositional arrangements, and textures.
Expand upon the conceptual, technical, and formal aspects of drawing you’ve acquired in previous courses and explore new possibilities, both practical and conceptual, pertaining to the visual language of drawing. Explore both traditional and non-traditional drawing techniques and media to further develop your individual expression. Through a combination of instructor-driven and student-initiated assignments, explore new directions based on experimentation and perceptual cognition to broaden your understanding of drawing.
LIFE DRAWING – EXART 3007 Strongly recommended: Drawing II or equivalent Explore the principles of drawing from the life model. A number of exercises are employed to assist you in drawing the human form, including quick and sustained studies, the study of basic human anatomy, and the relationship of the figure versus background. ELECTIVES – ALL STREAMS The following elective courses are open to students of all streams. Electives are either 39 or 21 hours in length; certificate students are required to choose two to three electives for a total of 60 instructional hours. Provided that the appropriate prerequisites have been met, electives can be taken at any time during the program.
ABSTRACT PAINTING – EXART 3532 (39 hours)
ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING – EXART 3904 (39 hours)
Make the shift from representational to abstract painting. Gain an understanding of why and how artists create abstract works. Examine how changing technologies in the 19th and 20th centuries have influenced the development of abstract art. Experiment with other artists’ processes and discuss how to use colour, line, and texture to create rhythm and mood in abstract work. Examine how social movements and changing philosophies have influenced abstract art.
Architectural drawing is invaluable in developing and communicating design ideas. Experience architecture’s creative aspects and decode its visual language by learning how to think spatially. See spaces in new ways and sketch what you see with accuracy by applying the rules of perspective and the fundamental skills of proportion and scale, space and volume, and materials and textures. Suitable for beginners and experienced artists alike.
CONTEMPORARY THEMATIC DEVELOPMENT – EXART 3542 (39 hours) Strongly recommended: Drawing II or Painting II or Watercolour II Explore themes, develop research strategies, and gain personal direction in your art production. Examine content and meaning of various themes and work through directed research on choosing appropriate materials to convey a visual message. This course is ideal for gaining direction in thematic development, in preparation for your Project Course and Final Exhibition.
DEVELOPING A PORFOLIO – EXART 3594 (21 hours) Now that you have created works that you are proud of, prepare a portfolio and communication strategy that showcases your experience, individual style, and professional accomplishments. The effective presentation of your work is integral for your success as an artist. This course will explore different ways to demonstrate your work — whether galleries, potential clients, or academic institutions. Topics include creating an artist statement, effective portfolio preparations, applying for grants and creating proposals. We’ll explore the innovative ways contemporary professional artists get their work seen, noticed, and talked about. This course is for anyone wanting to continue in either professional practice or further education in the arts.

DRAWING EN PLEIN AIR – EXART 3530 (21 hours) Carry your skills out of the studio and work on location en plein air. Work at various sites, beginning with pen and ink in sketchbooks to effectively collect imagery on location. This course aims to make drawing outdoors more accessible.
FIGURE PAINTING IN WATERCOLOUR – EXART 3516 (21 hours) Strongly recommended: Life Drawing and Watercolour I Learn to compose and interpret the figure in watercolour. Work from a model and apply various watercolour techniques.
Students who have completed Drawing I and II will be freer to experiment with the possibilities of this course. DRAWING WITH MIXED MEDIA – EXART 3522 (21 hours) ENCAUSTIC PAINTING – EXART 3434 (21 hours) Encaustic painting is an ancient technique commonly used by the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, in which coloured pigments were mixed with molten wax and painted on panels. In this course students will learn how to apply the encaustic technique to contemporary paintings. This medium consists of a mixture of beeswax and resin to which pigments are added to create paint. The waxes can be reworked or removed, added to or abraded. This technique will give the paintings either a great luminosity through the application of a number of transparent layers or a thick, matte texture. This technique will become a springboard in the students’ self-exploration of abstract and/ or representational art. The creativity of this medium is unending.
FIGURE PAINTING I – EXART 3529 (39 hours) Strongly recommended: Drawing II and Painting I Engage in the western tradition of painting the figure, particularly as it relates to the practice of working from the model. We’ll focus on human anatomy, structure, value relationships, and composition. Assignments encourage the exploration of a variety of approaches to figurative painting from historical and contemporary examples.
Strongly recommended: Drawing I This course aims to expand spontaneity in your picturemaking. Pursue drawing with mixed media such as charcoal, graphite, ink, watercolour and acrylics. Experiment with brush, pen and other drawing instruments. You will learn various strategies to work with mixed media and methods to effectively integrate them in your work. Expressive use of media to convey feelings will also be explored.

What are the elements of great composition? How do artists problem-solve? By applying the elements of art and design to the principles of composition, this course will enhance your compositional skills and allow you to explore your ideas in a series of works in the media of your choice, which may include painting, drawing, craft, or mixed media.
Learn techniques to guide your personal interpretation of painting portraits in watercolour.
SOFT PASTEL DRAWING I – EXART 3543 (39 hours) Strongly recommended: Drawing I Dry pastels are the purest form of pigment. When you draw with them the colour virtually flows from your fingertips. You will develop both your drawing and painting skills. You will study the use of colour, light, line, and composition while developing your individual expression. Students will develop a new understanding of colour by drawing with chalk pastels.
SURFACE & TEXTILE DESIGN – EXRI 3597 (39 hours) Do you have a passion for fabric, colour, texture, and patterns? Unleash your creativity by learning various methods of designing pattern, printing, and dyeing textiles. We will look at traditional methods of textile design such as batik, shibori, and silk painting. You will be guided through the steps in designing textiles from visualization and inspiration to exploring various methods and combining different techniques to transform fiber into expressive artwork.
VISUAL ART & DESIGN III – EXART 3544 (21 hours) Strongly recommended: Visual Art & Design II Expand your understanding of the elements and principles of art and design to further develop your art practice and expand your current portfolio. We’ll work with 3D projects and we’ll explore multimedia approaches to problem-solving. Through hands-on activities, this course will cultivate your ability to generate creative ideas and develop the skills to execute them.
TECHNIQUES OF THE OLD MASTERS – EXART 3325 (39 hours) Gain practical experience as well as insight into past technical developments from a variety of historical periods. While painting from a model and still life, you will become familiar with the use of underlayers, glazing, scumbling, velatura, dead colour, and grisaille. Emphasis will be placed upon studying the artworks of the Old Masters with a special interest for their use of the transparent paint vs. opaque paint.
UNIVERSAL DESIGN – EXART 3499 (39 hours) Extend your understanding of design by learning the principles and art of universal design or “inclusive design.” You will come to think of design in new ways by becoming aware of the impact universal design has had on the past, present, and future of residential housing design. We will focus on maximizing utility with the ultimate goal of looking at design projects that accommodate people’s needs, regardless of age, ability, or circumstance.

Prior to the review, you must attend a two-hour orientation session that will outline the portfolio review process, prepare you for the review, as well as provide information about the project course, final portfolio review, and graduating exhibition. The first portfolio review is an opportunity for you to receive feedback on your progress from a panel of instructors. Work on material in preparation for your graduating exhibition with a mentor of your choosing from among the available Extension Visual Arts instructors. Students should have an idea of which Visual Arts instructor they would like to work with prior to enrolling in Project Course I. Student and mentor will mutually establish the project objectives and timeline, and the mentor will be available for consultation for approximately four hours over the course of each term of enrolment, at mutually agreed times.
