2015 UAlbany Men’s Lacrosse Media Guide 2015 MEN’S LACROSSE OUTLOOK

The UAlbany men’s lacrosse team has been the most exciting squad in the sport the past two years. In 2015, it will look to be the first America East men’s lacrosse team to three-peat in a decade. Armed with the top scoring offense in Division I with 15.94 goals per game in 2014, UAlbany earned its second-straight America East Conference title, going undefeated in the league for the second-straight year. After surviving against tournament host Stony Brook, UAlbany took down UMBC 20-11 for the title on Long Island to earn a place into the NCAA Tournament. In Baltimore, UAlbany defeated the #1-ranked team in the nation in a 13-6 victory over Loyola to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals, where the season ended in heartbreak after a 14-13 overtime defeat to Notre Dame. Lyle Thompson and Miles Thompson made lacrosse history in 2014, becoming the first Native Americans to win the Tewaaraton Trophy. The two earned the top scoring seasons ever, with Lyle Thompson earning 128 points off 51 goals and an NCAA DI record 77 assists, and Miles Thompson scoring 119 points with 37 assists an NCAA DI record 82 goals. Ty Thompson completed the Thompson Trio with 41 goals and 12 assists for 53 points. The trio finished the 2014 season with 300 points, more than 52 Division I teams. The Thompson Trio was featured in publications like New York Times and Newsday and on the air on ABC World News, CBS Evening News, National Public Radio and ESPN’s SCFeatured. Into 2015, UAlbany has been predicted to finish first in the America East preseason coaches poll. The team returns a couple of preseason All-Americans and a couple of conference all-rookie team members. Two-time reigning America East Coach of the Year Scott Marr looks to repeat a feat the Great Danes did 10 years ago, earn a third-consecutive conference title. ATTACK The attack corps will have a couple of new starters with the departure of Miles and Ty Thompson. It will be the final season for one of the top players in college lacrosse history. Senior Lyle Thompson, a two-time Tewaaraton finalist and the reigning two-time America East Player of the Year, is the only Division I player with a pair of 100-point seasons and, with 279 points, is 75 points away from the NCAA career points record. A couple of returners who primarily came off the bench last season bolster the attack unit. Sophomore Bennett Drake, a member of the America East All-Rookie Team last year, was the team’s primary threat on penalty situations with 10 man-up goals, finishing with 13 goals and three assists on the year. Senior Will Stenberg scored in each NCAA Tournament game in 2014, earning 10 goals and three assists last year. Redshirt junior Tom Nuckel scored two points last season in nine games off the bench. Rounding out the newcomers is freshman Justin Reh, who led Rocky Point to a Suffolk County title as a senior captain with 105 points off 41 goals and 64 assists. MIDFIELD UAlbany brings back a wealth of experience to the midfield lines. Matt Garziano scored 10 goals, scooped 29 ground balls and caused nine turnovers. Matthew Bertrams also netted 10 goals with a 62.5% shot-on-goal percentage, adding 16 ground balls. Local product Tim Cox scored seven goals and picked up 12 ground balls, while Derrick Eccles finished 2014 with five points in seven games played. In his first three years, nine UAlbany defensive players have earned all-conference honors, with another pair of players earning all-rookie honors in the America East. Gleason’s defense helped UAlbany go undefeated in league play in 2013 and 2014, winning the school’s fifth and sixth America East titles. In 2014, UAlbany’s defense served as the backbone of the Great Danes run through conference play and the NCAA Tournament. The defense allowed 10 or less goals in wins over Harvard, UMass and Penn State and ran the table in the America East. After the defense allowed just 11 goals in the America East title game victory over UMBC, the unit held Loyola, the sixth-ranked offense in all of Division I, to just six goals en route to the school’s second-ever NCAA Tournament victory. Goalkeeper Blaze Riorden and captain Doug Eich each earned All-America East First Team and America East All-Tournament team honors, while Cody Futia earned All-America East Second Team and America East All-Academic Team. Gleason, a former UAlbany defenseman, played on the school’s 2007 squad that won the America East Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. He previously was the head coach at the College of Saint Rose for one year. From 2007-10, Gleason served as Siena College’s defensive coordinator. The Saints won the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Under Gleason’s tutelage, the defense was ranked second nationally in goals against average (6.50 pg) and second in man-down situations with an .817 percentage. In 2010, Siena captured its second consecutive MAAC regular-season title and the defensive unit was among Division I’s top five programs. Gleason, who was also the head coach of the Capital District Lacrosse Club for a three-year period, made 28 appearances in his two-year UAlbany career after transferring from Division II Adelphi University. He was taken by Major League Lacrosse’s New Jersey Pride in the fourth round of the 2007 supplemental draft with the 33rd selection. A native of Wading River, N.Y., Gleason earned a B.A. in sociology with a minor in education.

Assistant Coach Eric Wolf 4th year at UAlbany - UAlbany ‘07

Eric Wolf enters his fourth season as assistant men’s lacrosse coach, appointed to the position on Scott Marr’s staff on October 5, 2011. In his coaching and playing career, Wolf has been part of seven conference champion teams in the last ten years, including five America East titles with UAlbany, and the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Tournament seven of the last 10 years. Wolf serves as the team’s offensive coordinator, being at the helm of the highest scoring team in Division I in 2013 and 2014 at 15.94 goals a game, nearly 1.5 goals a contest more than second-place Cornell in ‘13 and over one goal more per game than second-place Duke in ‘14. The team also sported the top shooting percentage in both years, being #1 in assists per game and points per game. He coached the school’s second-ever Tewaaraton finalist in Lyle Thompson, who also won the Lt. Col. J.L. (Jack) Turnbull Award for being the top attack in all of men’s lacrosse in 2013.That year, he, Miles Thompson and Ty Thompson all earned All-America status at attack, combining for 255 points, the top trio in DI with no other attack unit getting over 200 points. Then in 2014, he coached the school’s first co-Tewaaraton winners: Lyle Thompson and Miles Thompson finished one and two respectively in points in a single season with 128 and 119, the first pair of Division I teammates to earn 100+ point seasons in the same year. Lyle Thompson earned a number of awards, including USILA Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award (DI Outstanding Player of the Year), Lt. Col. J.L. (Jack) Turnbull Award (DI Most Outstanding Attackman) and America East Player of the Year.. Three America East Players of the Year, Lyle Thompson (twice) and Joe Resetarits, have been coached by Wolf. From 2009 to 2011, Wolf served as a Siena assistant coach before coming back to his alma mater. At Siena, Wolf served as offensive coordinator and was in charge of day-to-day recruiting operations. The Saints won their second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and made the program’s second NCAA appearance. Wolf’s offense ranked eighth nationally at 11.44 goals per game and was fourth with a .338 shooting percentage en route to a program-record 13-5 campaign. In his three seasons, the Saints garnered three MAAC regular-season titles and combined for 37 victories.

2015 UAlbany Men’s Lacrosse Media Guide 2014 Year in Review

UAlbany came into the 2014 season with high expectations, coming off an America East title and an NCAA Tournament berth. The Great Danes came into the season bringing back the majority of the top scoring offense in Division I and an experienced veteran corps on defense. In non-conference play, UAlbany, despite a trio of one-goal losses, earned victories over NCAAbound Harvard and Siena, plus defeated UMass and Penn State on the road. Going into league play, UAlbany swept the America East for the second-consecutive season to earn the 1-seed in the league tournament. After surviving a scare with a Doug Eich overtime goal for a victory over Stony Brook in the semifinals, UAlbany defeated UMBC 20-11 for its second-straight America East title, earning a trip back to the NCAA Tournament. UAlbany drew 3-seed Loyola in the NCAA First Round, heading to Baltimore to face the consensus #1-team in the country. After taking the lead 1:05 in, the Great Danes never trailed, using 18 points from the Thompson Trio and 13 saves by Blaze Riorden to earn the 13-6 victory and advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals. On Long Island, UAlbany led 12-7 against Notre Dame, but fell in an overtime heartbreaker as the season came to a close. With the top single scoring seasons ever in Division I history, Lyle Thompson and Miles Thompson became the first pair of players and first Native Americans to win the Tewaaraton Trophy. Lyle set a DI record 128 points and 77 assists, adding 51 goals, while Miles matched a DI record 82 goals, adding 37 assists for 119 points. For the second-straight season, UAlbany finished with the top scoring offense in all of Division I, earning 15.94 goals per game. The team finished #7 in the final media poll of the year. The media took notice of UAlbany’s groundbreaking season. The Great Danes were featured in the New York Times, Newsday, CBS Evening News, ABC World News, National Public Radio, ESPN and numerous other outlets.

MILES, LYLE THOMPSON - CO TEWAARATON TROPHY RECIPIENTS

After dazzling the lacrosse world with amazing talent and ability, Miles Thompson and Lyle Thompson, brothers, teammates and Native Americans, were honored as co-winners of the 2014 Tewaaraton Trophy. This honor was bestowed at the Tewaaraton Ceremony at the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. Honored guests included the many of the Thompson family, the UAlbany coaching staff, plus numerous lacrosse supporters and players and coaches from around the country. This is a historic day for the world of lacrosse, with the Thompsons, members of the Onondaga Nation, becoming the first Native Americans to be honored with the Tewaaraton Trophy. “It is the best feeling to share the award with my brother and be the first Native Americans to win it,” said Miles Thompson. “No words can express this feeling.” “Words cannot describe how happy I am, it brought tears to my eyes,” said Lyle Thompson. “To share the award with my brother is an honor.” Since its inception in 2001, the Tewaaraton Trophy, on the men’s or women’s side, has never been awarded to a pair of players. The Thompson brothers become the first pair to achieve such a feat. Each gave a speech to the crowd, bringing both, as well as many in the audience, to tears. “We grew up together, we stuck together throughout high school, and it shows how close we are,” said Miles Thompson. “For us it is about bringing a positive influence and helping people, not just Native Americans, but everyone,” said Lyle Thompson. “It is just humbling, it is an amazing honor to our university and program, honoring the players and coaches,” said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr. “It is great to have the first Native Americans winning the honor. I cannot imagine how special it is for these two to win it together, for all of their family and teammates.” This is the first Tewaaraton Trophy to players from the America East since 2001, when Hofstra’s Doug Shanahan was selected as the award’s first recipient. Lyle Thompson, the USILA DI Outstanding Player of the Year, Outstanding Attackman and America East Player of the Year, finished with the top single season in Division I history, earning a DI-high 77 assists plus 51 goals to total 128 points, leading all of DI with 7.11 points per game. He earned at least four points in all 18 of UAlbany’s games, including at least seven points in 11 games, including three goals and five assists in the win over Loyola against Joe Fletcher, a fellow Tewaaraton finalist. Miles Thompson, a USILA First Team All-American, America East Tournament MVP and All-America East First Team attackman, earned a DI-single season record 82 goals to lead DI with 4.56 per game, adding 37 assists for 119 points, the secondbest all-time single season tally only to Lyle Thompson. He earned at least four points in 17 of UAlbany’s 18 games, including six games with at least six goals. He earned seven goals and two assists apiece in each America East Tournament victory.

2015 UALBANY MEN’S LACROSSE 51

2015 UAlbany Men’s Lacrosse Media Guide UALBANY COMPLIANCE

A Quick Reference for NCAA Rules and Regulations Concerning Representatives of Athletics Interests (Boosters), Fans and Alumni Relative to Recruiting How do I know if I’m a Booster? •You’ve participated in a group, agency, and/or organization that promotes UAlbany Intercollegiate Athletics. •You’ve made a financial contribution to the UAlbany Athletic Department and/or a UAlbany Athletics Booster Group (e.g., purchasing a ticket to a competition). •You’ve assisted or have been requested (by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics) to assist in the recruitment of prospects. •You’ve been involved in promoting the UAlbany Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. •You’ve assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes and/or their families. What is an Extra Benefit? •Any special arrangement made by an institutional employee or booster to provide a student-athlete, or his/her friends or relatives a benefit that is not authorized by the NCAA. Some examples include but are not limited to: •Money, special discounts and/or free or reduced products/services. •Use of a telephone or credit card for personal reasons without charge or at a reduced rate. •Entertainment services such as; movie tickets, and/or tickets to professional sporting events. •Use of personal property such as; beach homes, boats, cars, and/ or stereos. Who is a Prospective Student-Athlete? •A prospective student-athlete (PSA) is a student who had started classes for the ninth grade or above, including students in prep schools, junior colleges and other four year institutions. In addition, a student who has not started classes for ninth grade becomes a PSA if the institution or a Booster provides the individual or the individual’s relatives or friends with any financial assistance or benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students in general. Two basic rules to follow are: Treat ALL STUDENTS as prospects; ASK BEFORE YOU ACT •A PSA remains a PSA even after he/she signs a National Letter of Intent or Financial Aid Agreement. •A PSA remains a PSA until he/she either attends classes in any term at UAlbany, participates in a regular squad practice or competition that occurs prior to the beginning of any term at UAlbany, or officially registers, enrolls, and attends classes during the summer prior to enrollment.

Contact with Prospective Student Athletes All in-person, on- and off-campus recruiting contacts with a PSA or the PSA’s relatives or legal guardian(s) shall be made only by authorized institutional coaches or staff members. A contact is defined as any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s) during which time any dialogue in excess of an exchange of a greeting occurs. Boosters are prohibited from contacting a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s) to encourage the prospect to participate in intercollegiate athletics at UAlbany. Boosters are prohibited from engaging in the following: •Any contact with a PSA at any time whether in person, by mail or by telephone. •Any contact with a PSA’s coach, principal or counselor to gain information that would assist in evaluating the PSA either athletically or academically, including visiting the PSA’s educational institution to pick up film or transcripts. •Any involvement, directly or indirectly, in making arrangements for or giving any financial aid or other benefits to a prospect or his/ her family, relatives or friends (such as gifts, awards, loans, employment, transportation, free or reduced rent or housing, etc.). •Providing entertainment during the prospect’s official visit. •Sending anything to a prospect including letters, cards, newspaper clippings, game programs, post cards, e-mails, etc. (the type of materials that may be sent and who may distribute such materials is strictly regulated by the NCAA); •Any contact with enrolled student-athletes at other four-year colleges or universities for the purpose of exploring their interest in transferring to UAlbany. If a student-athlete enrolled at another institution contacts you, do not discuss the possibility of transferring with the athlete. Immediately tell the student-athlete to contact the UAlbany Athletic Department. The following examples of limited contact are permissible: •Contacts made with a PSA who is an established family friend, relative or neighbor so long as the contact is not arranged by a UAlbany staff member and is not made for recruiting purposes; •An unavoidable, incidental contact with a prospect provided recruiting does not take place, only normal courtesy is involved and the contact is not pre-arranged. •Casual contacts at UAlbany athletic events, if incidental: •Contacts about summer employment only after the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent or, in the case of a junior college prospect, only after the prospect has graduated or officially left the junior college. •Contact involved in a normal working relationship (i.e., booster who is a doctor or dentist who treats a prospect professionally) provided no recruiting is involved. •Viewing a prospect’s game at your own initiative (must not involve contact with the prospect).

If you have any questions or concerns, on this subject or any other NCAA matter, please contact the UAlbany Athletic Compliance Office. Eryn Cook, Assoc A.D. for Compliance, ecook2@albany.edu Nikki Branchini, Compliance Coordinator: nbranchini@albany.edu

2015 UAlbany Men’s Lacrosse Media Guide MARK BENSON

University at Albany Vice President/Director of Athletics The University at Albany named Mark Benson as director of athletics on August 20, 2014. Benson, 45, became the University’s second AD since the program entered Division I sports 15 years ago. As director, Benson, who previously was the senior associate athletic director at Old Dominion University, provides leadership for UAlbany’s NCAA Division I, 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program and its scholar student athletes. Following a nationwide search, Benson took the reins of the University’s diverse athletics programs from outgoing AD Dr. Lee McElroy, who announced his retirement in June of 2014. “It is important for UAlbany to engage an athletics leader who has a demonstrated background for combining success in sports with high academic achievement. Mark Benson is well qualified to head a program that values the integrity of the collegiate athletics experience,” said University at Albany President Robert J. Jones. “We have an outstanding athletics program with many benefits and a great legacy on which to build. The University community extends a warm welcome to Mark and his family.” Benson also served as the assistant vice president for Athletic Development at Old Dominion, and has served in this capacity since August 2006, and was an adjunct professor in the Sports Management Program. During his time at Old Dominion, Benson was responsible for budget preparation and administration, as well as providing sport supervision for men’s and women’s sailing. During Benson’s tenure at Old Dominion, the Athletic Endowment grew more than $16 million and the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation annual fund grew from $400,000 to $4.1 million. Benson was responsible for soliciting seven $1 million plus gifts to athletics, as well as numerous significant commitments from donors. Prior to his time at Old Dominion, Benson worked at Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. as an Educational Channel manager. In his role with Coca-Cola, he managed the Educational Channel for the Commonwealth Division, which covers sales centers from eastern Delaware to eastern North Carolina. Benson developed financial and marketing proposals as well as negotiated beverage contracts with colleges and universities within his division. Benson and his wife Hunter are the parents of three daughters, Vandy Grace, Lydon and Hannum. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University. “I am excited to join the University at Albany athletics program at this stage in its growth and potential,” Benson said upon his hiring. “My family and I feel warmly welcomed by the UAlbany community, and I can’t wait to settle in and get to work.” “I’m pleased to welcome Mark to the University at Albany and the America East Conference,” said AE Commissioner Amy Huchthausen. “UAlbany has a robust athletics program and he takes the AD title at perfect time to build from a position of strength, both within the conference and nationally. I look forward to working with him as he moves the program forward.”

The quality of UAlbany’s athletic program is evidenced by some of the finest facilities in the nation. The indoor and outdoor physical education design is among the most comprehensive in the Northeast. In the spring of 1992, the University opened SEFCU Arena (formerly Recreation & Convocation Center), an $11 million state-of-the-art facility. SEFCU Arena is the home for UAlbany’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, and has a .11 mile indoor track. The 4,538-seat arena also serves as a major venue for community events such as rock and pop concerts, sporting events and University activities. The playing surface on the arena’s three basketball courts and the surrounding track were completely renovated in December 2004. Adjacent to SEFCU Arena is the Physical Education Building which houses University Gymnasium; three full-size playing surfaces which can be used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis; four racquetball/handball courts; four squash courts; a swimming pool; a weight training and fitness center with Olympic weights; an aerobic exercise room and a dance studio. SEFCU Arena and Physical Education Building were air-conditioned in March 1996, as the state appropriated funds for renovations and permanent improvements to the University’s facilities. The $2.3 million in funding was prompted by the New York Giants’ decision to hold its football training camp on campus. The project brought together the region’s community in what proved to be a successful partnership. Additionally, UAlbany’s air-supported structure, fitted with a brand-new covering with minor interior renovations in the spring of 2003, is located to the east of the Physical Education Building, and may be utilized for tennis, basketball, and football practice. The indoor complex is complemented by fine outdoor facilities, highlighted by 2012-13’s substantial additions. The University constructed a synthetic turf field designed for year-round recreational, intramural and club sport activities; a state-of-theart 8,500 seat multi-sport complex for football and soccer; and a brand new track and field venue. The practice fields on the Western Avenue side of campus were renovated in 2012 with 263,000 square feet of two-inch-thick athletic sod and the irrigation system was refurbished. UAlbany broke ground on the site of what has become two allweather athletic fields in May 2005. “John Fallon Field” is the home to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, a sand and rubber infill turf field that stretches 99,450 square feet. An adjacent surface known as “Alumni Turf Field” is used for women’s field hockey in addition to serving as a multi-use recreational field for UAlbany students. The second phase of the complex’s construction, which includes seating for nearly 2,500 spectators, was completed in the fall of 2008.
