HEAD COACH JON MUELLER 15th season • Eckerd ‘92

Jon Mueller enters his 15th season as the head coach of the University at Albany baseball program in 2014. The Stillwater, N.Y. native has had proven success as both a player and coach throughout his career. Mueller ranks first among UAlbany’s career leaders with 302 coaching victories, and was named the America East Coach of the Year in 2004. He also led the Danes to the program’s first America East Conference tournament championship title and NCAA appearance in 2007. Mueller has produced dozens of all-conference standouts and has had six players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft under his direction, including two in the past three seasons. Not only is Mueller well respected in the UAlbany campus community, but also throughout the region, as he was inducted into the Capital District Baseball Hall of Fame in the fall of 2012, as well as the Capital District Basketball Hall of Fame and Stillwater High School Hall of Fame in the fall of 2008. Mueller assembled UAlbany’s 2013-14 incoming class that was recognized as the top recruiting class in the Northeast Region by Baseball America. Right-handed pitcher Stephen Woods highlighted the group, opting to attend UAlbany after the Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the sixth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. In 2013, Mueller piloted UAlbany to an appearance in the America East Tournament for the fifth straight season and for the eighth time since 2004. Earning the No. 3 seed, the Great Danes logged a 16-14 conference mark on the season and finished the year with a 23-25-1 overall record. With a 4-3 victory over conference-foe Maine, Mueller reached the 300-win milestone on May 4th. Under Mueller’s direction, UAlbany garnered seven all-conference honors, including Josh Nethaway’s first-team accolade.

The Great Danes also boasted the second-highest batting average in the conference with a collective .273 average and a .288 mark in league play. In 2012, Mueller led the Great Danes to a No. 2 seed in the America East Championship, recording the highest total league wins in the program’s Division I history, with a 16-8 record. Under his direction, seven earned all-conference honors, highlighted by first-teamers Mike Tirri and Nolan Gaige, as Gaige finished the season ranked third in the nation for triples (9). In addition, left-handed pitcher Sean Lucas was chosen in the 25th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Cincinnati Reds, marking the highest draft choice from the UAlbany program since 2002, and the eighth player in UAlbany history to be selected. In 2011, the Great Danes advanced to the America East Championship game for the third straight season. As the fourth seed of the tournament, UAlbany eliminated top-seeded Stony Brook and second-seeded Binghamton before falling to Maine in the championship finale. Dave Kubiak, the 2011 UAlbany Male Athlete of the Year, became the seventh player in the baseball program’s history to be chosen in the Major League Baseball Draft when the Tampa Bay Rays took him in the 36th round. Kubiak, a right-handed pitcher, and outfielder Nolan Gaige were named to the America East Baseball All-Conference Second Team, while catcher Josh Nethaway earned all-rookie recognition. In addition, reliever Greg Lutton was named to the all-academic team. The Great Danes returned to the America East Conference championship game in 2009 after missing the tournament in 2008. At the time, Mueller guided UAlbany to its seventh 20-win season in an eight-year span, as the Great Danes finished second in the regular-season standings. Catcher Ryan Gugel and reliever Sean Gregory earned all-conference firstteam accolades, while pitchers Dave Kubiak and Zach Kraham earned spots on the all-conference second team. Kraham also followed Kubiak as an all-rookie team member. In 2007, the Great Danes secured their first America East Conference tournament championship title and NCAA appearance. Mueller also saw five of his players earn All-America East Conference accolades. UAlbany posted a 29-29 record, including 13-11 in the America East, and as the No. 3 seed captured its first America East tournament championship. UAlbany defeated Binghamton in the tournament final by posting the first-ever 1-0 victory in America East postseason play. The Great Danes made the program’s first NCAA appearance as the fourth seed in the Fayetteville, Arkansas Regional. Mueller led UAlbany to a single-season record 37 victories in 2004, going 37-14, including 14-7 in America East play, setting records for both wins and winning percentage (.725). second in the conference and advanced to the America East championship for the first time, earning Mueller America East Coach of the Year honors. Mueller coached 2004 America East player of the year Dan Schoonmaker, who set the school’s single-season standard in RBI with 51. In addition, shortstop Joe Lamb and infielder Derek DeGrazio earned All-America East first-team honors, while relief pitcher Shawn Ryan, who was third in the country with 14 saves, joined DeGrazio on the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Northeast Region first team. DeGrazio was also named to the ECAC second team and Ryan was selected a collegebaseballinsider.com honorable mention All-America. In addition to mentoring all-conference standouts, Mueller has had six players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft and even more go on to sign professional contracts. Prior to the drafts of Sean Lucas in 2012 and Dave Kubiak in 2011, Ryan Gugel signed a free agency contract with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009, while Sean Gregory played for the Independent League Champions Quebec Capitals. In 2008, first baseman Mike Konstanty was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the 39th round. Catcher Tom Hill, a two-time All-America East Conference first-team selection at catcher, was chosen in the 34th round of the 2007 draft by the Kansas City Royals. Starting pitcher Adam Kroft, who went 8-3 with a 4.08 ERA as a senior, was chosen in the 30th round of the 2004 draft by the San Diego Padres. Kroft followed Mike Grasso, who was chosen in the 11th round by the Atlanta Braves in 2002 and Steve Checksfield, the school’s all-time leader in several categories including home runs and RBI, who was selected in the 26th round by the Houston Astros in 2001. Checksfield was the first UAlbany player since 1974 to be drafted. Mueller has also coached other players that have inked free agent professional contracts, including Mark Suchowiecki, who signed with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2006 and pitched for their Class A affiliate, the Hudson Valley Renegades. A volunteer baseball assistant at UAlbany prior to his current appointment, Mueller played professionally from 1994-2000 in the Northeast and Northern Leagues with the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs, Adirondack Lumberjacks and Marshall (Minn.) Mallards. A 6-foot-5, 245-pound infielder and designated hitter, Mueller accrued a career .286 batting average with 74 home runs and 318 RBI in seven professional seasons. He led the Northeastern League in homers in 1996 and 1997 with 18 and 20, respectively. In 1999, Mueller hit .290 with 13 home runs and 43 RBI, despite missing 30 games due to injury, and helped his team go 20-8 down the stretch to qualify for Northern League playoffs. He earned Most Valuable Player honors of the league’s East Championship series when he had the game-winning two-run single in the fifth and deciding game. In the Northeast League Championship series against Winnipeg, Mueller went 5-for-15 with two homers and seven RBI, including the game-winning grand slam with his team trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning in Game 3 of the best-of-five series. The Diamond Dogs went on to win the series in four games and Mueller was named series MVP. Mueller was also a member of the Albany-Colonie squad that won the 1997 Northeast League Championship and was selected MVP of the 2000 Northern League All-Star Game. A constant influence in the Capital Region, Mueller also coached at the College of Saint Rose in 1993-94 and was a teacher with Mechanicville City Schools, Saratoga BOCES and the Duanesburg School District. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Eckerd College (Fla.) in 1992 and has a master’s degree in secondary education from Saint Rose. Mueller and his wife, Patricia, reside in the Capital Region with their daughter, Marley, and son, Jaxon.

DREW PEARCE Associate Head Coach • 6th season at UAlbany Drew Pearce begins his sixth season with the UAlbany baseball program in 2014, serving his second season as associate head coach and fourth as recruiting coordinator. Pearce works primarily with the Great Danes’ pitching staff. His duties also include fundraising, team travel, practice planning, and academic support. Pearce played a key role in putting together UAlbany’s 2013-14 incoming class that was recognized as the top recruiting class in the Northeast Region by Baseball America. Right-handed pitcher Stephen Woods highlighted the group, opting to attend UAlbany after the Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the sixth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. In addition, Pearce was instrumental in the success of UAlbany’s recent Major League Baseball Draft picks – left-handed pitcher Sean Lucas and right-hander Dave Kubiak. Lucas was chosen in the 25th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Cincinnati Reds in 2012, marking the highest draft choice from the program since 2002, and the eighth player in UAlbany history to be selected. A year prior, Kubiak was named the UAlbany Male Athlete of the Year and was chosen by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 36th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Under Pearce’s direction in 2013, hurlers Austin Chase and Kasceim Graham earned second team all-conference honors, while right-handed pitcher Ryan Stinar was selected to the all-rookie squad. Pearce’s staff helped the Great Danes to a No. 3 seed in the America East Tournament with a 16-14 overall conference record. During his tenure at UAlbany, the Great Danes set the record for conference wins in a season, recording a 16-8 mark in 2012, while earning a No. 2 seed to the America East Conference tournament. In addition, five pitchers have earned all-conference honors under Pearce’s influence, including multi-season winners, Kubiak and Chase. Pearce came to UAlbany after a stint at Siena College, where he worked primarily with the outfielders and as a hitting coach. He also directed the Saints community service and fund-raising activities and was responsible for the oversight of scouting and the team’s strength and conditioning program. During the 2008 season, Pearce helped lead the Saints to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship game, posting a turnaround record of 30-26, after a 12-33 record in 2007. The Saints, who had not made the MAAC tournament in four years, achieved a 30-win season for only the fourth time in school history. Pearce acted as the first base coach during the season and was involved in practice and game planning. He coordinated all on-campus recruiting visits and was placed in charge of all team travel arrangements. Pearce was also the pitching coach of the Amsterdam Mohawks of the New York Collegiate Baseball League in 2007-08. He also acted as the General Manager of the Amsterdam Mohawks Organizations specializing in revenue generation through sponsorships, innovative marketing and community relations. Pearce worked with the team’s pitching staff in regards to mechanics, mental approach, strength and conditioning and situational knowledge. Pearce is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where he was a standout pitcher for the Golden Bears. As a sophomore, he posted a 9-5 record with a 3.22 ERA in the Pacific 10 Conference. Pearce collected victories over perennial powerhouse teams such as USC, Long Beach State, Pepperdine, Arizona and Fresno State. Pearce played in the Alaska Collegiate Baseball Summer League after his freshman year, registering a 5-1 record with a 2.01 ERA. He earned two international wins against all-star teams in Korea and Japan. After signing a contract to play in the prestigious Cape Cod League following his sophomore season at California, he tore a ligament in his throwing elbow. Pearce missed his junior season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and returned to the team, only to tear his rear rotator cuff as a senior. Pearce had been drafted by the New York Yankees out of St. Francis High School in Mountain View, Calif. In the summer of 2013, Pearce married his wife Karen in Cortona, Italy. They reside in Pittsfield, Mass.

Jeff Kaier enters his third year as an assistant coach for the UAlbany baseball team in 2014. He works with position players along with practice management, scheduling, and academic support. Kaier also facilitates summer and winter camps, manages summer ball placement, and is the team’s third base coach on game day. Kaier played a key role in putting together UAlbany’s 2013-14 incoming class that was recognized as the top recruiting class in the Northeast Region by Baseball America. Right-handed pitcher Stephen Woods highlighted the group, opting to attend UAlbany after the Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the sixth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. In 2013, Kaier helped the Great Danes earn a No. 3 seed in the America East Tournament with a 16-14 overall conference record. In addition, UAlbany garnered seven all-conference honors, including outfielder Josh Nethaway’s first-team accolade. In addition, centerfielder Nolan Gaige and first baseman Greg Muller earned second-team honors, while third baseman Matt Hinchy was named to the all-rookie squad. The Great Danes finished second in the league with a .274 collective batting average and a .288 mark in league play, while also boasting a program-record .966 team fielding percentage. Academically, Kaier aided the Great Danes to a team GPA just shy of a 3.0, marking the program’s best output. In his first season on staff in 2012, Kaier helped lead the Great Danes to a No. 2 seed in the America East Championship, as they recorded the highest total league wins in the program’s Division I history, with a 16-8 record. Seven earned all-conference honors, highlighted by first-teamers Mike Tirri and Nolan Gaige, as Gaige finished the season ranked third in the nation for triples (9). In 2009, he led the Great Danes, as a captain, to 15 conference wins. Kaier, a Queensbury, N.Y. native, previously coached with the Halfmoon Mariners summer baseball team, an affiliate of the American Amateur Baseball Congress, serving as the head coach from 2006-11. He led them to two state championships, including a final four appearance in the North Atlantic Regional in 2009. Kaier earned his bachelor’s degree in communication with a double-minor in education and sociology from UAlbany in May 2009 and received his master’s in education administration and policy study in December of 2011.

Brendan Rowland enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach in 2014. Rowland was a standout outfielder for Head Coach Jon Mueller from 2007-10. Rowland signed a professional contract as a catcher with the Atlanta Braves organization at the end of his career and played one season in the Gulf Coast League. In his three years as a starter at UAlbany, Rowland accrued a batting average of .318, hit 21 home runs and drove in 117 runs in 166 games for the Great Danes. He led the team in hitting in both his sophomore and senior seasons, and was a first-team All-America East Conference selection in 2008 and a second-team pick in 2010. Rowland was also a member of UAlbany’s 2007 America East Championship team that went on to compete in the NCAA Regional in Fayetteville, Ark. A native of Albany, N.Y., Rowland led Colonie Central to a Section II championship was state runner-up finish in 2006.

ROBERT J. JONES University at Albany President

Dr. Robert J. Jones was appointed by the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees on September 12, 2012 as the 19th president of the University at Albany. Previously, Dr. Jones had served as senior vice president for academic administration at the University of Minnesota System since 2004. Prior, Dr. Jones spent more than 15 years in key administrative leadership positions at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, including vice president and executive vice provost for faculty and academic programs, vice president for campus life and vice provost for faculty and academic personnel, interim vice president for student development and president of the University of Minnesota Outreach, Research and Education (UMore) Park Development, LLC. A native of Dawson, Georgia, Dr. Jones has more than three decades of higher education leadership experience as well as academic expertise spanning plant physiology and urban and international development. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agronomy from Fort Valley State College, a Master of Science degree in crop physiology from the University of Georgia, and a doctorate in crop physiology from the University of Missouri, Columbia. After earning the Ph.D., he joined the University of Minnesota faculty as a professor of agronomy and plant genetics. He is an internationally recognized authority on plant physiology and has published numerous scientific papers, manuscripts and abstracts. His research focuses on the role of cytokinins in stabilizing grain yields of maize against environmental stresses and global climate change. Over his career, he has trained many students who have gone on to leading careers in higher education and the private and not-for-profit sectors. Dr. Jones currently serves as Regional Council Co-Chair for the Capital Region Economic Development Council (CREDC) alongside Albany Medical Center President James J. Barba. He is a fellow of both the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America. He has been a visiting professor and featured speaker in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa, and from 1984 to 1994 served as an academic and scientific consultant for Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s South African Education Program. In 2010, he was awarded a University of Minnesota endowed chair in urban and international development; he was also named a recipient of the Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU). Dr. Jones held a gubernatorial appointment as a commissioner of the Midwestern Higher Education Compact and served on the board of directors for the Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities. Currently, he serves on the boards of the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities and the Bush Foundation, among other leadership roles. He was also a member of the Grammy award-winning Sounds of Blackness, a Twin Cities-based choral ensemble. Dr. Jones and his spouse, Lynn Hassan Jones, M.D., have five children and two grandchildren.

Vice President & Director of Athletics Dr. Lee A. McElroy Jr. is in his 14th year as UAlbany’s Vice President and Director of Athletics. McElroy, who provides leadership for the school’s NCAA Division I 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program for men and women, is a member of the University’s Executive Committee. During his tenure, UAlbany has won 66 conference championships and has made 27 NCAA appearances in football, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, softball, women’s volleyball, baseball, women’s lacrosse, field hockey and men’s and women’s track and field. The Great Danes were awarded the America East Conference Commissioner’s Cup in both 2012-13 and 2004-05. In June 2012, McElroy was inducted into the John McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame as the NACDA representative. In 2010, he was selected to the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association Board of Directors. McElroy was recognized as the 2008-09 Under Armour Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Northeast Region Athletic Director of the Year. He was also among ten current athletics directors named by the NCAA to a new program called the NCAA Champions Forum in an effort to bring minority football coaches more engaged with the hiring process. McElroy, who served as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) in 2006-07, was a key figure when the University successfully completed the NCAA’s second cycle of Division I athletics certification. He was honored with the 2004 General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award. Dr. McElroy has served as president of the America East Conference Executive Committee and has gained national prominence for his roles with professional organizations and NCAA committees. McElroy, who played football at UCLA in the late 1960s, was previously American University’s director of athletics for four years. American, a Division I school in Washington, D.C., competed in the Colonial Athletic Association. The department upgraded to 19 sports, expanded corporate partners by 400 percent, and planned capital projects for a fitness facility, intramural field and soccer stadium. McElroy founded the Eagle Club, a fundraising arm, and developed a program rated as one of the top ten in the nation in its compliance with NCAA gender equity requirements. Dr. McElroy served as president of the America East Conference Executive Committee in 2003-04, and has gained national prominence for his roles with numerous professional organizations and NCAA committees. He served a three-year term on the NCAA Division I Management Council as one of four at-large representatives from I-AA or I-AAA conferences. McElroy previously worked on four prestigious NCAA Committees: Athletics Certification, Financial Aid, Degree Completion Program, and the NCAA Special Committee on Agents and Amateurism. In 1998, McElroy was named to the NACDA Executive Committee for the University Division, and chair of the Sears Directors Cup Committee. The Sears Directors Cup is the only national award and academic scholarship program to recognize all NCAA and NAIA championship sports for women and men. From 1989-96, McElroy was the director of athletics at California State University-Sacramento. He led the program’s transition to Division I and engineered a move to the Big Sky and Big West conferences. He also implemented a strategic plan that developed a corporate partners plan, redesigned academic support services, improved athletic facilities, and provided for community outreach programs. McElroy also worked at the University of Houston from 1981 to 1988 as an assistant director of men’s and women’s sports and as an associate director of athletics, and for one year as the director of athletics at The University of the District of Columbia. He taught in the public school systems of Santa Monica, California and Beaumont, Texas, and was a high school principal in Beaumont. Along with his duties for the NCAA, McElroy has testified before congressional committees on issues in college athletics, such as gender equity, the welfare of the minority student-athlete, and the academic/ athletic balance. McElroy serves on the boards of the National Consortium of Academics and Sports, Athletic Business magazine, and the National Minority Golf Association. McElroy, who resides with his wife, Karen, in Slingerlands, earned his B.S. in political science and history from UCLA in 1970. He later received a M.Ed. from the University of Southern California, and an Ed.D. from the University of Houston.

ABOUT UALBANY ATHLETICS UAlbany’s intercollegiate athletics program excels at the NCAA Division I level, producing competitive teams, successful coaches, and outstanding student-athletes recognized for their accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom. The University sponsors 19 varsity sports for men and women. Club sports, an intramural program, and recreational opportunities are also offered. A member of the America East Conference since 2001, 17 of the school’s 19 varsity teams are eligible for conference championships and NCAA post-season competition. Women’s golf is an associate member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and football, a Division I FCS program, enters its first year as an associate member of the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013 after competing in the Northeast Conference for the past 14 seasons. UAlbany has won 66 conference championships and produced 27 NCAA Tournament teams since moving to Division I in 1999. Celebrating the school’s most successful year in Division I history in 2012-13, UAlbany won a record nine conference championships, while making four NCAA Tournament appearances. The Great Danes also won the America East Commissioner’s Cup for the second time in school history, as field hockey, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, and men’s lacrosse captured conference titles. Football also won its sixth NEC championship and had two players sign NFL Free Agent contracts. The Great Danes won eight championships in the 2010-11 academic year, including field hockey, volleyball, women’s lacrosse, softball and all four track & field titles. The lacrosse program, among the top 10 in both national polls, won its first-ever league crown and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. Volleyball, field hockey and softball also made the NCAA field. In 2006-07, the Great Danes had a breakout year as a Division I program with conference championships in men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, softball, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, men’s indoor track, women’s volleyball and baseball. In the spring of 2007, men’s lacrosse and softball became the first UAlbany teams at the Division I level to record victories in NCAA

post-season competition. In 2005-06, men’s basketball produced one of the most significant achievements in the school’s intercollegiate history with its first-ever NCAA Division I berth. UAlbany won the first of two consecutive league titles. The program’s storied turnaround resulted in a strong NCAA showing against No. 2 Connecticut. UAlbany was awarded the 2004-05 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup, which annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in the America East. In 2008, football won its fourth Northeast Conference championship and the Gridiron Classic. UAlbany has an athletic history that dates back to the late 1890s when the first known intercollegiate teams arrived on campus. UAlbany competed at the college division level prior to the NCAA’s restructuring in 1972. The athletic program moved from Division III to Division II in 1995-96. The quality of UAlbany’s athletic program is evidenced by some of the finest facilities in the nation. The indoor and outdoor physical education design is among the most comprehensive in the Northeast. In the spring of 1992, the University opened SEFCU Arena (formerly Recreation & Convocation Center), an $11 million state-of-the-art facility. SEFCU Arena is the home for UAlbany’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, and has a .11 mile indoor track. The 4,538-seat arena also serves as a major venue for community events such as rock and pop concerts, sporting events and University activities. The playing surface on the arena’s three basketball courts and the surrounding track were completely renovated in December 2004. In addition, SEFCU Arena contains a fitness center; four racquetball/handball courts and four squash courts; athletic training and rehabilitation facilities with three whirlpool baths, a musculoskeletal evaluation device and other therapeutic machines. Adjacent to SEFCU Arena is the Physical Education Building which houses University Gymnasium; three full-size playing surfaces which can be used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis; four racquetball/handball courts; four squash courts; a swimming pool; a weight training and fitness center with Olympic weights; an aerobic exercise room and a dance studio. Building were air-conditioned in March 1996, as the state appropriated funds for renovations and permanent improvements to the University’s facilities. The $2.3 million in funding was prompted by the New York Giants’ decision to hold its football training camp on campus. The project brought together the region’s community in what proved to be a successful partnership. Additionally, UAlbany’s air-supported structure, fitted with a brand-new covering with minor interior renovations in the spring of 2003, is located to the east of the Physical Education Building, and may be utilized for tennis, basketball, and indoor football practice. The indoor complex is complemented by fine outdoor facilities, highlighted by 201213’s substantial additions. The University constructed a synthetic turf field designed for year-round recreational, intramural and club sport activities; a state-of-the-art 8,500 seat multi-sport complex for football and soccer; and a brand new track and field venue. There are also 12 lighted tennis courts and numerous fields for football, soccer, softball, baseball, lacrosse, field hockey, and other events. The practice fields on the Western Avenue side of campus were renovated in 2012 with 263,000 square feet of two-inch-thick athletic sod and the irrigation system was refurbished. UAlbany broke ground on the site of what has become two all-weather athletic fields in May 2005. “John Fallon Field” is the home to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, a sand and rubber infill turf field that stretches 99,450 square feet. An adjacent surface known as “Alumni Turf Field” is used for women’s field hockey in addition to serving as a multi-use recreational field for UAlbany students. The second phase of the complex’s construction, which includes seating for nearly 2,500 spectators, was completed in the fall of 2008.

NEW YORK’S CAPITAL Albany, the state capital of New York, offers something for everyone, and is the center of a region remarkable for its natural and cultural resources. Designated an All-America City by the National Civic League in 1991, Albany is dominated by the Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza, a billion-dollar complex. It includes government buildings, a convention center, the state museum, and the state library. Directly across from the Plaza stands the State Capitol Building. This majestic five-story structure, in existence since 1879, houses the governor's offices and the chambers of the State Senate and Assembly. The Plaza has spurred the renovation of a large portion of historic downtown Albany. You will enjoy exploring the cosmopolitan area of old townhouses, boutiques and restaurants, or attending major sports, entertainment or cultural events at the Times Union Center, the host site for the 2001 NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Frozen Four, 2002 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, and 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball East Regional. This $65.4 million arena seats approximately 17,500 with a 1,700-car parking facility. Times Union Center hosts nearly 200 events a year including professional basketball and hockey games, arena football, rock concerts, trade shows, and conventions. The arena previously hosted UAlbany’s spring commencement. The City of Albany has experienced unprecedented progress and development during the past fifteen years. Over $1 billion in economic development projects have been implemented. The historic link between downtown Albany and the Hudson River was restored with the opening of the Hudson River Way Pedestrian Bridge and the construction of a multi-purpose amphitheatre at the Corning Park. The restoration of the historic Palace Theatre now provides a venue that complements the Times Union Center as a host to world class entertainers and cultural events. Four major malls and shopping centers, including Crossgates, Stuyvesant Plaza and Colonie Center, fall within one mile of campus. Nightlife in Albany is lively with concerts, movies, theatre, dancing, and just about every kind of restaurant or eatery you can imagine. Most attractions or activities are a short walk or accessible through the local bus system.
