WEEK 1

UALBANY 40, COLGATE 23 Saturday, September 1 / Albany, N.Y. ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany football team literally kicked off the 2012 season with a bang Saturday night at University Field, as they stood beneath a postgame fireworks display with a 40-23 victory over Colgate gleaming on the scoreboard. In front of 6,194 fans, the Great Danes improved to 1-0 on the season, marking their first victory over the Raiders in program history. “It was a good ballgame, and a great win,” said Bob Ford who is in his 44th season as a head coach and leads all active coaches with a 256-178-1 career record. The Danes’ defensive line was the story of the night, blocking two punts for eight consecutive points on a safety and touchdown, in addition to breaking up four passes as the airborne ball crossed the line of scrimmage. The Great Danes’ defense also forced the Raiders into two fumbles and an interception. Senior Jon Morgan led the squad with nine tackles, including eight solo, while senior linebacker Dean Mercuris broke up a game-high three passes. “People don’t understand how important the tipped pass is,” said Ford. “Any time that you can’t get to the quarterback, you need to move into the passing lane and get your hands up. It can alter the game.” Offensively, senior Drew Smith and sophomore Omar Osbourne both rushed for career highs, as Smith led UAlbany with 174 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Osbourne also broke his career best in two categories, rushing 113 yards while logging 146 all-purpose yards. Making his debut as starting quarterback, redshirt sophomore Will Fiacchi completed 16-of-25 pass attempts for 143 yards. After Colgate narrowly edged the Great Danes last season in overtime, the momentum appeared to still be in the Raiders’ favor as Colgate took a 10-0 head start. After a 12-play, 76-yard drive down the field, Colgate’s Andrew Burgess gave the visitors a 3-0 lead with a 21-yard field goal with 4:02 minutes remaining in the first quarter. In their next possession, the Raiders crossed the goal line on Kevin O’Connell’s 20-yard reception for a 10-point lead. However, that would be the last time Colgate controlled the game, as the Danes came storming back. Osbourne rushed 30 yards on four carries in the 4:20 minute drive, putting junior Kevin Chillis in position to score. Chillis’ 21-yard end zone run through the Raiders’ defense, followed by Sean Kenny’s point after kick, cut the deficit to three. In Colgate’s next possession, UAlbany’s defense forced a three-and-out and capped the stifled drive with Ocieka Bakou’s punt block that ricocheted into the end zone, forcing Colgate to push the ball out the back to settle for a safety. Trailing 10-9 with the ball back in their hands, the Danes looked in great position for another quick score with a second-and-goal on the five yard line, but the Raiders’ Mike Armiento picked off Fiacchi’s pass in end zone and took a knee for a touchback. However, UAlbany’s defense suffocated Colgate again, forcing a punt from the Raiders’ 35yard line. Like déjà vu, Bakou got a mitt on the ball, sophomore Kyle Jordan picked it up and ran it back to give the Danes’ a 16-10 advantage after the extra point, as well as the lead for good with 3:01 minutes left in the first half. “On the sideline you could just sense it. We were with whipping them,” said Ford. “You have to break a team’s spirit. You have to break them down. And I think we did that early in the game.” UAlbany struck first after intermission, as Tramaine Wilson intercepted Gavin McCarney pass on Albany’s three yard-line and ran it 33 yards before coming down. The Danes used eight plays to march down the field and Osbourne finished the drive with a 22-yard and a four-yard rush, consecutively, into the end zone at the 6:31 mark in the third quarter. However, the Raiders got the seven points back on their next possession, using five plays to cross the goal line on Jordan McCord’s 15-yard rush, making the score 23-17. From there, the Great Danes hit the accelerator, scoring 10 straight points after Sean Kenny’s 41-yard field goal with 3:23 to go in the third, and Drew Smith’s two-yard push after a run-heavy 66-yard, six-play march down the field for a 33-17 lead. Colgate made one last stride in the final quarter, as McCarney connected with CJ Stempeck for a 26-yard touchdown pass. UAlbany dotted the exclamation point with 1:50 minutes to go, running the ball nine times for 48 yards, capped by Smith’s 1-yard run and his second touchdown of the night. “It’s great,” said Smith. “We did very well. We finished. We executed. We put our foot on the gas and took it until it was over.”

UALBANY 35, ROBERT MORRIS 10 Saturday, September 8 / Moon Township, Pa. MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Sophomore wide receiver Cole King’s five catches for 124 yards and three touchdowns led the University at Albany football team to a 35-10 victory over Robert Morris Saturday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium. With the win, the Great Danes improved to 2-0 on the year, as well as 11-3 in Northeast Conference openers and 7-1 in those on the road. “The chemistry between myself and Will (Fiacchi) has been going on for the last four years,” said King on the duo’s history in Section III high school football. “The second touchdown pass was a perfect throw by Fiacchi, placed only where I could have caught it between the two defenders.” Redshirt sophomore quarterback Will Fiacchi stood out in just his second career start, completing 17-of-21 passes, throwing for 208 yards, rushing for 35 yards, and tallying four total touchdowns (3 passing; 1 rushing) in the victory. “A total team effort and at times a dominating performance today,” said head coach Bob Ford on the win. “I like this group a lot, and have bought into them from day one this season on how good we can be. At times, I saw that we really were dominating both sides of the ball.” On the offensive side, UAlbany recorded 66 plays for 385 yards with 177 yards coming from the ground game, while 208 were in the air. Defensively, the Great Danes recorded five sacks for a loss of 43 yards and two interceptions for 29 yards. Robert Morris totaled 208 yards on offense -- 87 rushing and 121 passing. Senior defensive end Dean Mercuris led the Great Danes with five tackles. It was a dominant performance by the Great Danes on both sides of the ball in the first half. After a 49-yard field goal by Robert Morris’ Greg Langer, UAlbany would score on three consecutive possessions to go up 21-3 at the break. UAlbany drove 81 yards on five plays, concluding with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Fiacchi to King to go up 7-3 with 9:43 remaining in the first quarter. After a quick three-and-out by the Colonial offense, the Great Danes moved down the field and scored their second consecutive touchdown, using nine plays for 58 yards. Fiacchi’s 6-yard QB-option rush for a touchdown capped the drive and put the Danes up 14-3 with 4:18 remaining in the first quarter. The UAlbany defense came up big again, forcing Robert Morris to stall out for its second threeand-out, and the Danes’ offense came storming back. Using almost nine minutes on the clock (8:54) with 19 plays for 79 yards, UAlbany scored its third consecutive touchdown as King grabbed a 6-yard TD pass from Fiacchi -- a dime between two defenders -- expanding the lead to 21-3 with 8:38 left in the half. After the break,UAlbany continued its dominance on offense, scoring with just a minute off the clock to begin the second stanza. King caught his third touchdown of the game on a 41-yard pass, capping a three-play 51-yard drive. The score gave the Great Danes their largest lead of the game, 28-3, with 13:59 remaining in the third quarter. Looking to stop the bleeding, Robert Morris scored its first touchdown of the game, cutting the deficit to 18, 28-10, with 6:56 remaining in the third. Sophomore quarterback Matt Layman connected with junior wide receiver Donte Jeter for a 20-yard touchdown after an eight-play, 70-yard drive. With 3:31 remaining in the third quarter, senior running back Drew Smith capped the games’ scoring with a 2-yard rush after a 24-yard interception return by senior free safety Justinian Mason. The touchdown put the final score, 35-10, on the board for the final 18:31 minutes of the game.

WEEK 3

#5 YOUNGSTOWN STATE 31, UALBANY 24 Saturday, September 15/ Youngstown, Ohio YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - In the battle to stay perfect, the University at Albany football team had the hosting No. 5 Youngstown State University Penguins on the ropes deep into the second half. However, the nationally ranked squad held off the rising Great Danes down stretch, as UAlbany fell, 31-24, Saturday evening at Stambaugh Stadium in front of a crowd of 15,840. Sophomore quarterback Will Fiacchi was impressive again; totaling a career-high 228 yards passing, completing 23-of-35 pass attempts, and throwing two touchdowns. In the first half, the Marcellus, N.Y. native was nearly perfect completing 14-of-15 with a throw-away. Cole King was his go-to for the second straight game, as he made seven catches for 115 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Jon Morgan led the Great Danes with 10 tackles, followed by Chris Wilk’s nine. For the first time this season, the Great Danes struck first. On the Guins’ first drive of the afternoon, safety Brandon Baylor’s hard hit spoiled the Penguins’ opening drive, popping the ball into the hands of teammate Justinian Mason. UAlbany’s offense quickly took a 7-0 lead on a spectacular flea-flicker play called by offensive coordinator Ryan McCarthy. After two flicks of the ball, Fiacchi found a wide open Kevin Chillis 44-yards down the middle of the gridiron, who stepped easily into the end zone. However, in the seesaw game, Youngstown State quickly responded with a touchdown of their own, following a 10-play, 87-yard drive down the field. Jamaine Cook capped the possession with a two-yard rush to even the score, 7-7, after the kick. In their next drive, the Penguins scored in similar fashion, as Cook jaunted seven yards across the goal line with 13:27 remaining in the second half. Despite allowing 14 straight points to the hosts, UAlbany fought back with an eight-play drive, finished by Omar Osbourne’s 32-yard dance through the Guins’ defense. Sean Kenny’s extra point tied the ball game up, 14-14 with 9:08 left in the half. Scoring his third straight touchdown for YSU, Cook gave Youngstown State the lead again with another seven-yard rush. Cook finished the day with three scores and 161 rushing yards. Unwilling to go away after traveling nearly 500 miles for the contest, the Great Danes matched the Penguins heading into the half, after Fiachhi connected with Drew Smith on a nineyard pass to the left side of the end zone with just nine seconds remaining before the break. Unfortunately that would the closest UAlbany would get, as YSU held the lead the remainder of the way. After a very offensively heavy first half, defense ruled in the second, as both squads were forced to punt away in their opening drives. After the third straight punt, Youngstown State broke the stalemate with David Brown’s 25-yard field goal with 2:15 to go in the third quarter. Trailing, 24-21, the UAlbany offense was forced to punt after a three-and-out with 5:28 remaining in the game, but YSU’s Ali Chealb got a hand on it and put the Penguins in good scoring position. While the UAlbany defensive line held strong, including a huge third-and-one stop on the goal line, the Guins found the end zone on their fourth-and-goal attempt to take a 10-point lead. The Great Danes still hung in there, marching down the field from their own 20. Unable to get into the end zone, Kenny made it a one-possession game with his 30-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining in the contest. Youngstown State was able to handle the on-sides kick and ran out the clock to keep their 3-0 record unblemished, while UAlbany fell to 2-1 on the season. “We knew we were going to have trouble containing them but we held them to a respectable point,” said head coach Bob Ford. “We had some big plays, we had a chance to win it in the fourth quarter. I told the kids just to keep it close heading into the fourth quarter and we did that.” “It was a great game against a great team. I wish them well,” added Coach Ford.

WEEK 4

UALBANY 30, #23 MAINE 20 Saturday, September 22 / Orono, Maine ORONO, Maine - The University at Albany football team continued to impress all those who have witnessed their play this season, as the Great Danes overcame the No. 23 Maine Black Bears, 30-20, Saturday night at Alfond Stadium. The Great Danes (3-1) now own a 4-2 series advantage over Maine (1-2) and a 7-5 all-time record against Colonial Athletic Association opponents. In addition, the victory marked the first over a ranked opponent for the UAlbany program since Sept. 19, 2009 when they also beat Maine (ranked 20th), 20-16. “We looked like two lightweight boxers trading little puffy jabs in there for about three quarters,” said head coach Bob Ford. “We just couldn’t seem to get enough offense going and they couldn’t either to deliver any kind of knockout punch. And then we finally got on track a little bit and got enough offense to hold them off in the end.” Kicker Sean Kenny made a name for himself, tying the program record with three made field goals in the contest, representing the first nine points of the game. Tailback Drew Smith led the offense with 114 rushing yards on 18 carries, 144 all-purpose yards, and two touchdowns, while Kevin Chillis rushed twice for 88 yards total and accumulated 158 all-purpose yards. Quarterback Will Fiacchi completed 13-of-29 pass attempts for a total of 132 yards. Totaling 25 yards on three catches, senior Ryan Kirchner moved into sole possession of second place all-time at UAlbany with 137 career receptions. He is now 10 away from tying the program record. Defensively, Dave Plungas led the squad with nine tackles, while Olatunji Idowu and Jon Morgan each brought down eight. While neither team scored in the first quarter of play, there was still plenty of drama to keep the fans entertained. After both squads were forced to punt in their opening drives, the Great Danes started their drive with a big carry by Smith. However, as the Guilderland native reached 17-yards, the final hit knocked the ball loose and the Black Bears took over on the visitor’s 42yard line. In good field position, Dean Mercuris’ monstrous sack for a loss of nine yards set the Black Bears back, and UAlbany’s defense snuffed out Maine’s run game. Maine looked as though they were going to win the race onto the scoreboard with a 31-yard field goal, but the Great Danes special teams, who have been stellar all season long, played spoilers. Jon Morgan batted the kick into the hands of Justinian Mason and the Danes took control of the ball. UAlbany broke the stalemate with Sean Kenny’s 44-yard field goal with 10:45 remaining in the first half, following a nine-play, 25-yard drive. Kenny put one through the uprights again with 6:12 to go in the half from 39-yards out to give the Great Danes a 6-0 lead. Making himself the story of the stanza, Kenny finished a perfect 3-for-3 in the second quarter, making a 25-yard field goal in the final seconds of the half to send the Great Danes into the locker room with a 9-0 lead. Out of the break, Maine scored the first touchdown of the contest at the 10:40 mark in the third quarter. Black Bear quarterback Damarr Aultman connected a 19-yard pass to Marcus Wasilewski to cut the deficit to two points. However, 18 seconds later the Great Danes responded with Kevin Chillis’ 74-yard scamper into the end zone to take a 16-7 advantage after Kenny’s extra point. With 4:10 remaining in the third quarter, the Black Bears slashed into UAlbany’s lead with a 31-yard field goal by Brian Harvey, making it a four-point game, 16-10. For the fourth time in the game, Maine entered the red zone after a 45-yard pass downfield. But, the stellar UAlbany defense forced the Black Bears to settle for a field goal from 30-yards out with 11:59 remaining in the game, and the Great Danes continued to hold a double-digit lead, 23-13. Although UAlbany was forced to punt on their next possession, a misplayed catch on the falling pigskin at the other end of the field put the ball back into the hands of the Great Danes at the 17-yard line. JoJo McClary recovered the fumble that slipped through Maurice McDonald’s arms and put the Danes in great position to put the game away with 10:18 remaining.

However, it was all for naught, as Maine’s James Kendall intercepted Fiacchi’s pass at the three yard line less than 30 seconds later. Fortunately, UAlbany’s spectacular defense did not allow a single yard in the three-and-out, making the Black Bears punt from the back of the end zone. Drew Smith took advantage of the Great Danes’ field position, powering through the defense for a 27-yard rushing touchdown, giving UAlbany a commanding 30-13 lead with 5:48 to go in the game. In the waning minutes, Maine worked its way down the field for a short pass into the end zone, cutting the deficit to 10. However, that would be as close as the Black Bears would get, as UAlbany ran the clock out the rest of the way. “It felt good that we went in there and played with them,” said Drew Smith. “Talent wise, we compete with the best of them and we came out here and proved it. We want to prove that we can play in the CAA and we hope we answered some questions tonight.”

WEEK 5

UALBANY 55, MONMOUTH 24 Saturday, September 29 / Albany, N.Y. ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany football team proved once again its readiness to play at the next level Saturday afternoon at University Field, as the Great Danes earned a commanding, 55-24, victory over the visiting Monmouth University Hawks. With the varsity program’s 250th win, UAlbany improved to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Northeast Conference. Monmouth dropped to 3-2 and was handed its first league loss of the fall (2-1). “I think we played, at times, absolutely lights out. As good as we could play,” said Head Coach Bob Ford. Combining for 263 rushing yards, senior Drew Smith piloted the ground game with 109 rushing yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns in the victory. Kevin Chillis averaged 28.7 yards per carry, as he totaled 86 yards and a touchdown on three carries. Likewise, Presley Beauvais handled the ball three times, contributing a 67-yard touchdown run. All three Great Dane players single-handedly out-rushed the Monmouth team as a whole, as the Hawks managed just 53 rushing yards against the UAlbany defense. Quarterback Will Fiacchi recorded his third 200-plus yard passing game this season, as he completed 16-of-30 attempts for 248 yards and two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Ryan Kirchner was the go-to man of the afternoon, hauling in five passes for 121 yards and a score. With 142 receptions, he is now just five catches away from tying the program career receptions record. Chillis was also key in the passing game, with twocatches and a touchdown for a 52receiving yards. The junior from Buffalo, N.Y. totaled a career-high 196 all-purpose yards in the victory. As a whole, the UAlbany offense was outstanding, going 11-for-18 on third-down conversions and 1-for-1 on fourth-downs. “That’s phenomenal,” Coach Ford commented. “Against that defense, that’s phenomenal. I give Ryan McCarthy and our offensive staff and Mike Simpson and our defensive staff a lot of credit. I think we’re well prepared going into ball games and it shows.” Defensively, the Great Danes stepped up to the challenge of facing the NEC’s top offensive team on paper. Not only did the UAlbany defense hold the Hawks to 53 yards on the ground, they disrupted the passing game with three interceptions. Senior Jon Morgan led the team with seven tackles, including six solo, while also breaking up two passes. Chris Wilk brought down five, as Dean Mercuris, Jake Dwyer, and Tramaine Wilson recorded picks and ran for over 10 yards each. On their first drive of the afternoon, the bus ride up from Jersey seemed to have no effect, as the Hawks took a quick 7-0 lead, following a 12-play, 82-yard drive down the gridiron. However, that would be the last lead for Monmouth the rest of the way. What looked like a quick three-and-out turned out to be the turning point of the game. With fourth-and-10 on the 23-yard line, Coach Ford called for a fake punt, resulting in Chillis running for 77 yards into the end zone. “I thought we could (convert),” said Ford when questioned on the spectacular and surprising play call. “And because I’m 75-years-old and I can call anything I want to call.” With the game tied, 7-7, after Sean Kenny’s kick, the Danes’ defense forced the Hawks to punt. On the very first play of the drive, Fiacchi passed to Kirchner down the left sideline, and the Rumson, N.J. native legged out an 81-yard touchdown to give UAlbany the lead for good. With 1:27 to go in the first quarter, Smith gave the Great Danes a 21-7 advantage, following a 61-yard rushing touchdown past the Hawk’s secondary. The pace slowed slightly in the second quarter, as both squads traded field goals, starting with Kenny’s 18-yarder at the 8:47 mark. On their next drive, Monmouth’s kicker, Eric Spillane, responded with one of his own from 38 yards out, making the score 24-10. Out of the halftime break, UAlbany struck first, with Smith’s four-yard rush across the goal line with 11:08 on the clock. After Wilson’s interception put the ball back into the hands of the host team, the Great Danes widened the gap with Kenny’s 49-yard field goal. Not only was it a career-best for the reigning NEC Special Teams Player of the Week, but it also tied for the second-longest made field goal all-time at UAlbany.

Despite trailing by 24 points mid-way through the third quarter, the Hawks did not go silently. Monmouth quarterback Kyle Frazier completed a 38-yard touchdown pass to Neal Sterling and on the kickoff following the score, the Hawks forced and recovered the Great Danes’ fumble, putting the ball right back into their hands. The Hawks capitalized and made it a 10-point game, 34-24, heading into the fourth quarter. However, mirroring the first period, UAlbany put 21 points up on the board in the final stanza, while the defense shut out the visitors. It only took one play for the Great Danes to end the drought, as Fiacchi connected a 44-yard pass to Chillis who accelerated out of the Hawks’ reach. Defensive end Dean Mercuris quickly gave the Danes possession once again, snagging the ball off the line and ran 17 yards before being brought down at midfield. Smith entered the end zone for the third time, capping the 11-play, 53-yard drive with a seven yard explosive run up the middle, doubling up the Hawks, 48-24, with 7:20 on the clock. With just under a minute and a half to go in the game, Beauvais, a redshirt freshman, recorded his first career touchdown, breaking away with a 67-yard scamper to give UAlbany their last points of the day.

WEEK 6

UALBANY 31, BRYANT 14 Saturday, October 6 / Smithfield, R.I. SMITHFIELD, R.I. - For the past two seasons, Bryant seemed to be the University at Albany’s kryptonite, but that all changed Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium, as the Great Danes won the dogfight, 31-14. After a suspect first half, UAlbany rebounded to score the final 24 points of the contest in front of a national television audience and improved its record to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in Northeast Conference play. Recording seven receptions for 103 yards in the win, senior wide receiver Ryan Kirchner became the all-time receptions leader at UAlbany, breaking Tim Bush’s record of 147. Still with five games remaining in the regular season, Kirchner has 149 career catches. “Tim’s a good friend of mine. To be up there with him is an absolute honor,” said Kirchner. “I’m proud of it, but we still have some business to take care of. We’ve got to get another ring here.” In addition, fellow senior Drew Smith continued to prove himself as one of the best players in Great Danes history as he logged 100-plus all-purpose yards for the 23rd time in his career. Smith finished the day with a 104 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Sophomore Will Fiacchi continued to impress in his first year as starting quarterback, as he totaled a career-high 262 passing yards, completing 23-of-34 pass attempts to keep the Great Danes perfect in league play. Defensively, Jon Morgan and Kyle Jordan led the squad with five tackles apiece, while Tim Kologrivov added three, including two for a loss. Justinian Mason had the key play of the game; picking off a pass and running the interception back 75 yards for a touchdown. Defense was the name of the game in the first quarter, as neither team could get into an offensive flow. The score stood, 0-0, heading into the second stanza. In the new quarter, the Great Danes struck first when Smith capped an eight-play, 37-yard drive with a three-yard rush up the middle and across the goal line with 6:59 remaining in the half. However, the Bulldogs (0-6, 0-4 NEC) turned the tides on their next possession, marching 62 yards down the gridiron. Mike Westerhouse connected with Jordan Harris for a 12-yard touchdown pass at the 3:14 mark. Just 11 seconds later the Bulldogs broke the 7-7 stalemate, as Robert Rutland intercepted Fiacchi’s pass - the first play of UAlbany’s drive - and Bryant used some trickery to go up by seven. Wide receiver Jordan Harris received a lateral and tossed an 18-yard pass to a wide-open Robert Ingebretsen on the right side of the end zone. Trailing 14-7 at the half, things still looked gloomy out of the break, as the Great Danes were forced to punt, fumbled the ball, and missed a field goal, in the first five minutes of the half. But, the first-place Great Danes did not roll over. UAlbany used a steady nine-play, 64-yard drive, capped by Smith’s 1-yard blast across the goal line to tie the ballgame, 14-14. UAlbany played spoilers on the Bulldogs next drive, as Bryant’s Westerhouse tried to throw the ball away as he was being sacked, and Mason snagged the pigskin. He scampered 75-yards down the sideline to give UAlbany the lead for good, 21-14, with 1:19 remaining in the third quarter. Not only did the Mason’s play put the lead into the Great Danes’ hands, it also silenced the Bulldogs’ crowd of 1,219, limiting the home field advantage. In the fourth quarter, Smith continued to power through the defense at will. He made the score 28-14 on his third touchdown of the game, rushing two yards into the end zone, finishing a seven-play, 62-yard drive. With 4:02 left in the contest, kicker Sean Kenny made the last statement with a 35-yard field goal in tough wind conditions. Kenny had missed his three prior attempts, but finished the day on a high note.

#24 UALBANY 36, SAINT FRANCIS (PA.) 13 Saturday, October 13 / Albany, N.Y. ALBANY, N.Y. - In front of 6,852 fans, marking the third-largest home crowd in program history and largest since 1978, the No. 24 University at Albany football team boosted the energy of the already spirited Homecoming crowd Saturday afternoon with a 36-13 win over the visiting Saint Francis Red Flash. For the third straight game, senior tailback Drew Smith blasted his way into the end zone three different times, bringing his nation-leading total up to 15 touchdowns this season. Smith carried the ball 20 times in the victory for 75 rushing yards. He also caught three passes, finishing with 51 receiving yards and 126 all-purpose yards. In addition to Smith, receivers Ryan Kirchner and Cole King also broke the 100 all-purpose yard mark. Kirchner finished with 104 yards, making four catches for 58 receiving yard and also returned three punts for 46 yards. Sophomore Cole King matched his career-high of seven receptions, recording an even 100 yards on the afternoon. Sophomore Jake Meek had a break-out game, rushing 48 yards from the quarterback position and tallied two touchdowns, including a 38-yard scoring scamper. Sophomore quarterback Will Fiacchi had another sound game in the pocket, completing 21of-31 attempts for 255 passing yards. Defensively, senior Chris Wilk led the squad with eight tackles, including five solo. Justinian Mason and Jon Morgan were also stellar in limiting the league’s leading rushing game to 159 yards on the ground with six tackles apiece. Despite all the purple and gold spirit surrounding University Field, the visitors made the first strike on their first drive of the afternoon. Saint Francis used a steady 10-play, 33-yard drive down the field to set up Josh Thiel’s 38-yard field goal at the 10:30 mark in the opening quarter. After forcing the Great Danes to punt, the Red Flash made it 10-0 heading into the second quarter, as Keion Wade capped a seven-play, 91-yard drive with a 53-yard dash through the defense. However, the Great Danes battled back on their first drive of the second stanza. Although Kevin Chillis’ impressive 57-yard scamper through the secondary was called back due to penalty, the Great Danes still crossed the goal line in the drive on Smith’s first touchdown of the game. With 10:01 to go in the first half Smith rushed three yards through the Red Flash’s defensive line to put UAlbany within four, 10-6, after a missed extra point. The Red Flash, however, made the next move, increasing their advantage to seven, 13-6, on Thiel’s 44-yard field goal with 4:57 remaining in the half. That would be Saint Francis’ last lead of the day. “All it takes is one good drive and we’re back in it,” said Smith on the comeback. “There’s no other option but to go out and fight. It’s not like you can crumble.” With 2:15 to go before the break, Smith finished off the Great Danes’ eight-play, 65-yard drive with another three-yard rush into the end zone, tying the ballgame, 13-13. Forcing the visitors to punt with a minute remaining, UAlbany put itself into field goal position as the clock wound down. From 27-yards out, Sean Kenny booted it through the uprights as time expired, giving the Danes a 16-13 lead at the half. From there, UAlbany never looked back, scoring 20 unanswered points the rest of the way. For the second consecutive game, the Great Dane defense did not allow the opponent a single score in the second half. With 8:12 to go in the third quarter, Meek rushed seven yards into the end zone for his first career touchdown, giving UAlbany a 22-13 lead after the blocked extra point. A Red Flash fumble forced and recovered by senior Ocieka Bakou put the ball back into the hands of the hosts, and the Danes capitalized with Smith rushing 10 yards for his third touchdown of the game. Leading 29-13, the Great Danes looked to put the game away at the start of the fourth quarter. However, a fumble on the two yard line, as Meek tried to push through for his second score of the game, briefly shifted momentum to Saint Francis. However, the miscue would turn out to be non-concerning, as UAlbany’s consistent defense held off the Red Flash and Meek redeemed himself with a 38-yard scramble down the field and into the end zone for the final points of the day.

WEEK 9

#20 UALBANY 23, SACRED HEART 20 Saturday, October 27 / Fairfield, Conn. FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Playing in front of Sacred Heart’s Family Weekend crowd of 3,505, marking the Pioneers’ second-largest attendance in history, the University at Albany football team recovered from a slow start to take a 23-20 victory over the hosting Pioneers. The Great Danes improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the Northeast Conference, while SHU fell to 2-6 on the season and 1-4 in the NEC. The duo of senior wide receiver Ryan Kirchner and sophomore quarterback Will Fiacchi led the UAlbany offense, connecting for two touchdowns in the victory. Kirchner made six catches for 86 yards, while Fiacchi completed 14-of-32 passes for 195 yards. Senior tailback Drew Smith led the Great Danes’ ground game with 103 rushing yards on 27 carries, finishing with 116 all-purpose yards. In addition Kevin Chillis also broke the 100 all-purpose yard mark, totaling 106 after four receptions, two rushes, and two kickoff returns. Defensively, senior Dave Plungas had an incredible game with 16 tackles, marking a team season-high for the Great Danes, and personal career-high, while classmate Jon Morgan had two game-changing interceptions and five tackles. In addition, Leon Saddler brought down nine. Fumbling the ball twice in their first two drives of the afternoon, the Great Danes had a rough start in the road game. First, on UAlbany’s opening drive, the Pioneers sacked Fiacchi just short of midfield, freeing and recovering the fumble. While the Great Danes defense made the stops and forced a punt, Sacred Heart pinned UAlbany at the two-yard line. Running the ball away from the goal line, SHU punched the ball loose again, out of Smith’s grips this time, allowing the Pioneers to take over on UAlbany’s 15-yard line. Sacred Heart took a 7-0 lead as quarterback Luke Wischnowski connected with receiver Rock Tate in the back left corner of the end zone on the second play of the drive, with 6:22 to go in the first. However, the Great Danes turned it around to start the second quarter when Wischnowski tried to throw deep, but cornerback Leon Saddler tipped the ball up and safety Tramaine Wilson intercepted the pigskin. Wilson ran it 23 yards to SHU’s 39-yard line before being pushed out of bounds. Two five-yard rushing plays by Smith set up Fiacchi’s 29-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Ryan Kirchner, tying the ballgame, 7-7, after Sean Kenny’s kick. The Pioneers took a 13-7 lead with 1:13 remaining in the half, converting on 4th-and-9 with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Robert Dim. After a false start penalty pushed the kick back, SHU missed the point-after attempt. In the waning seconds of the first half, the Great Danes marched down the field, trying to close the gap before the break. With 13 seconds remaining, Kevin Chillis snagged a pass in the red zone and dove across the goal line, but a holding call wiped the touchdown from scoreboard. Kenny’s field goal attempt from 43-yards sailed through the uprights, sending UAlbany into the halftime break trailing by three, 13-10. While the Pioneers appeared to still have momentum out of the locker rooms, junior Andrew Smith and Jon Morgan put an end to it. Smith’s pressure on Wischnowski led to Morgan’s interception on UAlbany’s two-yard line. Morgan grabbed the pass and ran it 10 yards to the 12 before being brought down. The Great Danes then went on to use a nine-play, 88-yard drive down the gridiron, to take the lead for the first time in the contest on another Fiachhi-Kirchner connection. Kirchner hauled in a 19-yard pass in the back corner of the end zone, making the score 17-13 with 5:37 to go in the third. With 2:35 remaining in the game, the Pioneers retook the lead, as Wischnowski threw a 35yard touchdown pass to Tate, who caught the ball over the middle and ran to the right pylon. The pass capped a nine-play 55-yard drive, lasting 3:56 minutes. With time dwindling, the Great Danes ran three plays before Omar Osbourne broke away with a 40-yard rush down the middle of the field and into the end zone to take control of the lead, 23-20, with 1:13 remaining after a missed point-after. In the end, that would be the winning touchdown. The Pioneers tried to answer, but Morgan picked off his second pass of the game, on SHU’s 47, to give the Great Danes the ball with 57 seconds to go. While it seemed the game could be over, Sacred Heart’s defense stepped up to the challenge and forced UAlbany to punt with 43 seconds from the 49. Paul Layton’s punt came to a stop on SHU’s six-yard line. The Pioneers had 30 seconds to work with, but the Danes defense held tight to hold onto the victory.

WEEK 10

WAGNER 30, #18 UALBANY 0 Saturday, November 3 / Albany, N.Y. ALBANY, N.Y. – Coming off a chaotic week of no power, cold showers, and the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in their Staten Island campus community, the Wagner College Seahawks rallied together to shut out the No. 18/20 University at Albany football team, 30-0, in a key Northeast Conference contest Saturday afternoon at University Field. The loss marks UAlbany’s first in the league this year and just the second time the Great Danes have fallen to Wagner in their 16-game all-time series. In addition, the defeat snapped UAlbany’s five-game win-streak, falling to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the NEC, while the Seahawks rolled into first place and streaked to their sixth straight win, now owning a 6-3 overall mark and 6-1 record in conference play. Coming into the game averaging a conference-best 34.25 points per game, the Great Danes struggled against the Seahawks, managing just 188 yards of offense and 11 first downs, compared to Wagner’s 413 offensive yards. “We had numerous opportunities to make plays,” said head coach Bob Ford. “When those opportunities presented themselves, we did not make them.” Playing without the second-leading scorer in the nation, senior tailback Drew Smith, for a game due to a violation of team rules, sophomore Omar Osbourne took on the starting role and led the Great Danes with 51 rushing yards on 12 carries. Sophomore quarterback Will Fiacchi threw for 103 yards, completing 18-of-33 passes, including six each to junior Jameel Gay and senior Ryan Kirchner. Gay’s six catches and 43 receiving yards marked a career-high, while Kirchner finished with 34 yards. Defensively, senior Dave Plungas recorded double-digit tackles for the second straight game, bringing down a team-high 11, including 10 solo. Senior inside linebacker Jon Morgan tallied eight tackles, moving into ninth place all-time at UAlbany with 255 in his career. Junior Paul Layton punted seven times in the contest, averaging 43.0 yards, including a career-long and program record 82-yarder. Winning the coin toss, Wagner deferred and was able to have the steady blustering wind in its favor to start the contest. The Seahawks scored 14 points in the first quarter, first on an 11-yard rushing touchdown by Dominique Williams at the 11:43 mark. Wagner then used a 10-play 70yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown pass from Nick Doscher to Joe Sidaras. In the second quarter, the Seahawks expanded their lead when Doscher connected an 88-yard pass to Anthony Carrington to make the score 20-0 with 11:35 to go. Wagner then capitalized on a roughing the kicker penalty that eventually resulted in another Seahawk touchdown. Williams ran the ball seven yards into the end zone with 3:28 remaining before intermission, capping a 7:05 minute, 72-yard drive. Trailing 27-0 at the half, UAlbany tried to get going in the second half, but Wagner’s defense forced a three-and-out and then scored the last points of the game with 5:55 to play in the third quarter. Kicker David Lopez made a 40-yard field goal to give the Seahawks the final 30-0 score. In the end, Williams led Wagner with 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Doscher finished with 253 passing yards (10-15-0) and two passing touchdowns to his credit as well. Last season, UAlbany shut out the Seahawks, 24-0, in Staten Island. With the tables turned, the Great Danes suffered their first shutout since going to Robert Morris (38-0) in the 2010 season. “The challenge is always, always to come back down to earth after a great win, and to pick it up after a devastating loss,” added Ford. “We’ll see if we can get it going next week.”

WEEK 11

UALBANY 38, DUQUESNE 31 Saturday, November 10 / Pittsburgh, Pa. PITTSBURGH - In a game divided, the University at Albany football team overcame the hosting Duquesne University Dukes, 38-31, Saturday afternoon at Rooney Field in a key Northeast Conference contest. The Great Danes came out with vengeance in the opening half, taking a 35-7 lead at the break, but the Dukes came storming back, scoring the first 17 points of the second stanza. In the end, UAlbany held on to improve to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in conference. They now will play for at least a share of the NEC title next weekend against Central Connecticut State. After totaling just 188 yards of total offense last week against Wagner, the Great Danes made up for that in just one quarter versus the Dukes. In the second quarter alone, UAlbany totaled 217 yards of offense. By halftime, the Great Danes had five touchdowns to their name, credited to five different players. UAlbany finished the game with 439 yards of total offense and 24 first downs. Senior Drew Smith led the Great Danes’ running game with 143 yards on 25 carries, and totaled 164 all-purpose yards, including two catches. In addition, Smith scored his 42nd career touchdown, tying UAlbany’s program record. Omar Osbourne also crossed the goal line and rushed 80 yards, while finishing with 102 all-purpose yards. Likewise, Kevin Chillis was credited a touchdown, showing spectacular agility, accumulating 64 rushing yards in the win. Sophomore quarterback Will Fiachhi completed 14-of-22 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. Classmate Cole King was his top receiver with three catches, including one for a score, and 54 receiving yards. Defensively, Chris Wilk led the squad with seven unassisted tackles and a sack, while Jon Morgan dropped five, snagged an interception, and blocked a punt. Senior Dean Mercuris also had a solid game with five tackles, a sack, a pass break up, and two quarterback hurries. To start the contest, the Great Danes’ defense forced a quick three-and-out. Back in the lineup, Smith quickly made a statement, putting UAlbany on the board with a one-yard rush, capping a 14-play, 76-yard drive, at the 7:44 mark in the first quarter. Osbourne’s three-yard run across the goal line with 14:03 to go in the second quarter gave the Great Danes a 14-0 head start, after UAlbany’s seven-play, 64-yard drive. However, playing in his last home game of his career, senior running back Larry McCoy put the Dukes on the board with 11:17 left in the half. McCoy rushed two yards, capping a 77-yard drive. With 9:27 left in the half, Paul Layton’s 49-yard punt pinned the Dukes at their own fiveyard line, later proving to be a huge play in the game. The Great Danes defense followed with a quick three-and-out, forcing Duquesne to punt out of the end zone, and the ball landed out of bounds just 24-yards away. With fantastic field position, Chillis took advantage on what could have been a broken play. On a wild pitch, Chillis scrambled away from the defense, reversed, and then turned up field 34 yards and into the end zone for a 21-7 advantage with 7:30 left in the half. “It’s hard to tackle Chillis in a phone booth,” said Bob Ford in the heat of the game action. With 1:47 left in the second quarter, Fiacchi faked a handoff to Osbourne and ran 10 yards untouched for a touchdown. The 10-play, 4:38 minute drive gave the Great Danes a 21-point lead, 28-7. Defensive pressure, including Joe Fasano’s sack for a loss of six yards, forced the Dukes to punt with 59 seconds remaining. Morgan got a hand on it, giving the Danes the ball on their own 41. UAlbany capitalized. With six seconds on the clock, Fiacchi found King in the back of the end zone, 23 yards out, sending the Danes into the break ahead 35-7. However, while the first half belonged to UAlbany, the second half was primarily Duquesne’s. The Dukes scored 17 unanswered points, kicked off by Rich Piekarski’s blocked punt. One play later Gianni Carter caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Sean Patterson with 7:05 remaining in the third quarter. Duquesne struck again with Charley Leventry’s 26-yard field goal with 12:54 left in the fourth quarter. After recovering their onside kick, the Dukes cut the deficit to 11, 35-24. Patterson capped an eight-play drive with a four-yard rush.

The Great Danes broke their scoring drought with Sean Kenny’s 30-yard field goal with 2:12 remaining in the contest. With the clock ticking down, the Dukes continued to threaten, driving 75-yards with seven plays including a 51-yard Hail Mary pass to McCoy on a third-and-five play that put Duqusene on the 19 yard line. Sean Brady capped the drive with a grab in the end zone with 11 seconds remaining, putting the Dukes within seven, 38-31. However, the onside kick was not successful in the second attempt, and the Great Danes were able to run out the waning seconds with a knee.

WEEK 12

UALBANY 63, CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE 34 Saturday, November 17 / Albany, N.Y. ALBANY, N.Y. – In an afternoon of lasts – the last game of University Field’s 43 seasons, the last played in the Northeast Conference, the last at home for the squad’s 21 seniors, and the last of the 2012 regular season – the University at Albany football team made it memorable with a 63-34 win over Central Connecticut State. The victory earned the Great Danes their sixth NEC title in their 14 years in the league, sharing the championship with Wagner who overcame Duquesne, 23-17, earlier in the day. In a pregame ceremony, the team’s seniors were honored one-by-one in front of a crowd of 1,876. In the last five years, the class as a whole amassed a 39-18 overall record, 31-8 mark in the NEC, three NEC titles, while leading the squad to the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1977 – done in 2011 – and to the program’s highest rank in the national polls earlier this season. A member of that impressive class, senior tailback Drew Smith, capped a historic career with three rushing touchdowns, making him the all-time leader for touchdowns scored (45) and co-leader for all-time rushing touchdowns (40). In four active seasons, Smith accrued 3,196 career rushing yards and 4,721 all-purpose yards, both good for second all-time. Against CCSU, Smith finished the day with 65 rushing yards on 18 carries with 110 all-purpose yards. “You only hope to have a career that I’ve had,” said Smith. “I’m proud of it. No regrets. I’m just blessed.” Senior kicker Sean Kenny tied the program’s single-game record with nine successful point-after kicks. He also kicked off 10 times, totaling 588 yards. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Will Fiacchi completed 13-of-17 passes with one interception and one touchdown, totaling 242 passing yards. With a well-balanced offensive output, senior Ryan Kirchner led the team with four receptions for 45 yards, bringing his program record total to 172 career catches. Smith hauled in three, also for 45 yards, while Cole King grabbed two for 63 yards. Omar Osbourne scored two touchdowns for the Danes, catching a 58-yard pass for the score, while also rushing for one as well. Junior Kevin Chillis led the squad with 118 all-purpose yards, including a 79-yard kickoff return for a touchdown – the program’s first since 2006. While UAlbany’s offense had a spectacular game, the defense shone as well, forcing five fumbles, recovering four, including two recovered for touchdowns. Redshirt freshman Cory Connell had the first, giving the Great Danes a 42-0 head start on his 40-yard run. Senior Ocieka Bakou had the second, a 45-yard jaunt, capping the Danes at 63 points in the third quarter. Classmates Dean Mercuris and Chris Wilk led the squad with six tackles apiece. Mercuris also recovered one of the loose balls and made five solo tackles, including one for a loss. UAlbany put up 42 unanswered points in the first half, a Division I FCS era record for the program. With 9:13 left in the first, Smith rushed one yard into the end zone to get the scoring going. It was done one play after junior Andrew Smith sacked CCSU quarterback Andrew Clements and forced a fumble that was recovered by redshirt freshman Zach Troutman on UA’s one-yard line. “We played great, executed great,” said Drew Smith. “There were no doubts about it from kickoff.” Osbourne followed with a 16-yard run, capping an eight-play, 86-yard drive with 4:12 remaining in the opening quarter to give the Great Danes a 14-0 lead. With everything still flowing in UAlbany’s favor, Smith crossed the goal line again with a four-yard rush with 12:58 to go in the half. On the Great Danes’ next possession, Fiacchi connected with Osbourne for a 58-yard passing touchdown, a one-play, 12 second possession, at the 6:00 minute mark in the second. Forcing the Blue Devils to punt away at the end of their next drive, the Great Danes capitalized once again, as Smith rushed for his third touchdown of the day with a three-yard run at the 2:53 mark. UAlbany stretched the lead to 42-0 after Jake Dwyer hacked the ball loose from Clements at CCSU’s 40. From there, Connell picked it up and ran it to the end zone with 2:05 remaining. The Blue Devils broke their scoring drought with four seconds on the clock before halftime, as Clements rushed one yard, capping an eight-play, 63-yard drive. UAlbany led 42-7 at the half. Not letting up, Chillis started the second stanza in style for the Danes, slicing through the special teams unit 79-yards for a touchdown.

CCSU’s Clements had another one-yard rush across the goal line to cut the deficit to 35 points, 49-14, with 8:06 on the clock in the third. However, the Great Danes followed with the two most exciting touchdowns of the game. With second-and-goal Fiacchi connected a 21-yard pass to Smith. With a clear path into the end zone, instead of running for it, Smith ran out of bounds purposely at the one, so senior offensive lineman Anthony Bazzoffi could have a chance for his first career touchdown. On third-and-goal, Bazzoffi powered through into the end zone and the sideline erupted. “It’s a great feeling,” said Bazzoffi. “I never thought this day would come.” Just 18 seconds later, a fumble by Clements was picked up by Bakou. The senior ran 45-yards for his first career touchdown, as well, with 1:08 left in the third quarter, giving UAlbany a 49-point lead, 63-14. From there, the Blue Devils scored the final points of the afternoon, as Deven Baker caught a 57-yard touchdown pass to start the fourth quarter. With 8:16 remaining, Chuck Watson intercepted Jake Meek’s pass and ran it back 70 yards, cutting the margin to 36, 63-27. With 2:36 on the clock, Deven Baker capped the game’s high-scoring affair with a 15-yard reception, after an eight-play, 92-yard drive. With the sound of the final whistle, UAlbany wrapped up its final clash on University Field – the home of the Great Danes since Bob Ford started a club football team in 1970. With the transition to the Colonial Athletic Association, the Great Danes will move to Bob Ford Field, a brand new 8,000 seat stadium, next year. The Great Danes close the 2012 regular season and 40th year of varsity football at UAlbany with a 7-1 conference record and 9-2 overall mark, signifying a record number of regular season wins in the Division I FCS era.
