CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE

Since its establishment, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) has had a rich history of providing its students with a challenging yet nurturing educational experience. That tradition continues today as a result of the respectful partnership between the university and its constituents, the steadfast focus on our mission, and the consistent philanthropic support of all who cherish and love “Dear Mother”. Since I arrived in 2013, one of the many things that I look forward to each year during Homecoming is seeing a multitude of individuals like you who strongly and continuously make a significant and positive impact on students attending UAPB. Every year we take the opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to you at our Annual Donors Appreciation Banquet. Your generosity has assisted us in providing a high quality education. Whether you have given year after year, have only contributed a few years, or even if you are a first time donor, you are a part of the tremendous story that happens day after day, year after year, and decades upon decades at this great institution. These gifts not only significantly impact our classrooms and our programs, they represent an investment in our students and a vote of confidence for our faculty and staff. UAPB students consistently excel in the classroom, on the field and court, in the community, and in the workforce. This high standard is sustained, in part, because of your continued generosity. We extend our heartfelt appreciation in helping make the difference. Here’s to making a strong and lasting difference through continued financial and volunteer support of our students and university! Sincerely, Laurence B. Alexander, J.D., Ph.D. Chancellor University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff

VICE CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE

A casual glance at the higher education landscape reveals numerous challenges. Challenges for prospective and current students. Challenges for parents. Challenges to the institutions themselves, particularly publically-supported colleges and universities. As state governments look for ways to reduce the size of their budgets, those who undervalue higher education will seek to continue the trend of reducing state support. This will make it difficult for us continue delivering on the promise to educate our students and to fulfill our mission. That’s why your support is needed now more than ever before. I applaud you for once again helping us meet the need of thousands of determined, talented and deserving students here at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. With your ongoing support, we will continue to provide the high quality education we’ve provided for over 140 years, despite the challenges we face. Thank you, for entrusting us with your precious resources as we continue to nurture the even more precious resource of the human mind. Sincerely,

James B. Tyson, CFRE Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement and Development

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

It is homecoming time again and with it the gaiety and festivities associated with seeing longtime friends and former classmates! We are grateful that as you celebrate, you also pause to make a financial investment in students who are building memories to share at future homecomings. Your generosity is amazing and boundless. Because of your contributions, we experienced a 37% increase (above last year) in charitable gifts to the University (this amount is well-above the 6.9% estimate for educational institutions in the United States – according to survey results released by Council for the Advancement and Support of Education [CASE]). As a result, hundreds of students participated in extracurricular activities and off-campus learning activities; over $500,000 was awarded in scholarships; and overall, our students experienced more superior learning experiences. Again, thank you for the financial investment you make in our students. Please continue to do so and thereby perpetuate a cycle of excellence. Sincerely,

Margaret Martin-Hall, Ed.D. Director

University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of you for your genuine passion the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and its students. The compassion you feel is evident in your commitment to remain connected to the campus by providing continuous support when asked. Economic challenges are the reality for most of the students attending UAPB. Because your support has been steadfast and unwavering, you have not only given our students “tools” needed to be successful, you have also inspired other alumni and friends to commit to increasing support to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). Without contributions—large and small— attending college would not be possible for many of our students. Thank you for making it possible for UAPB students to learn without limitations.

Larry Cooper Foundation Fund Chairman

The Class of 1973 wanted to have an amazing impact on the lives of UAPB’s students “The UAPB Class of 1973 has supported our alma mater in many ways over the years including contributions to the [Dorothy Magett Fiddmont] Millennium Leaders Fund and the Football Stadium Construction Fund and others. However, the Class decided to do something that would be of a permanent nature that would outlive all of us. In 2013, the UAPB Class of 1973 Scholarship Endowment Fund was established with an initial class contribution of $22,000. The goal is $100,000 and the class is reaching out to all of their classmates and encouraging them to support this very worthy cause to aid some deserving underprivileged high school senior to get an education as we did at this great institution.” Clinton Sanders, Class of 1973

ANNUAL GIVING DRIVE Annual contributions for the period July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015, totaled $1,628,801.24 The results are amazing! The 2014-2015 Annual Giving total increased nearly 37% above the 2013-2014 total. This is wellabove the 6.9% estimate for educational institutions in the United States – according to survey results released by Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). With more than 3,600 member institutions and 74,000 advancement professionals, CASE is one of the largest nonprofit educational associations in the world.

Our donors designated their gifts consistent with their interests and chose a variety of ways to give support. Many donors gave unrestricted gifts so that unanticipated student needs could be met. As a result, the Annual Giving Drive consisted of several successful initiatives. Though all specific initiatives that gave a positive impetus to our fundraising efforts are too numerous to mention herein, special note is made of a few that have a far-reaching and long term impact:

Lifeline Endowed Fund The Lifeline Endowed Fund was established to provide students in dire need of financial assistance the opportunity to attend college at UAPB. Funds raised will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education/HBCU (Title III) Initiatives. The Lifeline Endowed Fund was established to provide students in dire need of financial assistance the opportunity to attend college at UAPB. As of June 30, 2015, the Lifeline Endowed Fund had reached $873,238.

This special section is a tribute to six individuals who, since our Homecoming 2014 publication, have increased their level of support to and/or joined the Dorothy Magett Fiddmont New Millennium Leaders. They are part of the many positive things that occur at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB).

History of the Millennium Initiative The approach of the year 2000 was a time of excitement, fear, and anticipation. There was much ado, much preparation, and much trepidation as to how technology would make the transition. Would mass transit systems in large cities be immobilized? Would Wall Street and major financial institutions collapse? Was UAPB positioned for the 21st century and all that it entailed? Indeed, the new millennium was upon us, and just as pundits the world-over readied for international and national technological challenges, one individual came forth with an idea that would keep UAPB in the forefront of educational excellence. Dr. Dorothy Magett Fiddmont set forth the idea of identifying a group of individuals who would agree to be ambassadors for the university and as evidence of their commitment donate $2,000 to provide much needed scholarship funds for deserving students at UAPB. The institution, from its earliest days as Branch Normal, had always had the good fortune to have persons who were deeply committed to its mission, goals, and objectives. The group now being formed would comprise some of the individuals from the earlier years of Arkansas AM&N College and many more from more recent years of the institution. They would be the New Millennium Leaders. As ambassadors, they would be the individuals who could be counted on to share the many positive things happening at the university. They would be kept abreast of happenings at the university by remaining connected, involved and wellinformed. The Millennium Leaders have met the challenge. They have stayed the course. Through good times and not so good times, the Millennium Leaders have been strong advocates for the university. They have focused on all the good and positive things UAPB has forever encompassed in the midst of no publicity, poor publicity and negative publicity. The Millennium Leaders have been a positive force. They are among the leaders of this millennium! Some of them have passed away. Though they are gone, they are remembered for the trails they blazed, the commitment they made, and the legacy they left for others to emulate. The following are levels of commitment individuals and groups may choose to support:

“Thank you so much for giving me this scholarship. I grew up with a single parent so growing up was kind of tough. My family always struggled financially because everything fell on my mother. So I knew from a young age that I didn’t want to see my mother struggle anymore. I made up my mind to be the first person in my family to go to college and graduate.” -Alexandra, ‘16

“Growing up in the small town of Warren, Arkansas I didn’t see many people around me going to college or finishing college without playing sports. I knew from a young age that I always wanted to attend college and graduate. As a student, it motivates me knowing that we have alumni and faculty that care about the students as a group and individually, the support around campus is at a great level and it is only increasing. I cannot express my true thanks for believing and investing in me. I will always be thankful.” -Jason, ‘17

“This scholarship will get me closer to receiving my criminal justice degree. I am a senior at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff majoring in criminal justice. I will be graduating in May 2016. I came back to school after 20 years of being unable to attend and complete my degree. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for the scholarship. It will help me further my education and meet my educational goals for advancement in my career.” -Tyrone, ‘16

“I would again like to thank you for investing in my education. You have allowed me to focus on the most important aspects of school, which is learning. You have lightened my financial burden as I continue for success during my time at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Your generosity has also inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope to one day help students achieve their goal just as you have helped me achieve mine.” -Sierra, ‘16

“You have lightened my financial burden which allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school and learning. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me.” -Demetrius, ‘16

“I want to thank you for the funds awarded to me. With this scholarship, I will be able to pay for my classes and relieve stress from the previous semester. It motivates me to know that someone is willing to help. Also, this experience has influenced me to do the same and help a student in the future.”

“I chose to attend the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff because of how close the faculty works with its students. This university cares so deeply for its students and wants to see every student succeed. At most universities, students are made to feel as if they are not important. That is simply not the case at this university. I love this institution and plan to continue to give back to it upon graduation. I truly believe this university is a family and I am honored to be a part of the pride. I am honored to be awarded this scholarship. I would really like to thank you for your generosity in allowing me to continue and finish my education at UAPB.”

-Eric, ‘16

-Kevrick, ‘16

“I wanted to attend the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) because when I came to visit my senior year of high school, my heart smiled, and I was always told as a young girl “Home is where the Heart is”, and my heart chose here. Not only did my heart choose for me, but after hearing how great the S.T.E.M. Academy was, I knew this was the place for me since I had planned on majoring in math. Since I will be graduating this May, I plan to attend graduate school for computer science with a focus on cyber security and code theory so that I can become a cryptographer. I am very thankful for your thoughtful contribution and the change you’ve made in my life. I hope to one day be able to do the same for a fellow Golden Lion.” -LaCresha, ‘15 University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff

L to R: Art Monk, Jackie Harris, Anthony Jones, Monte Coleman, Keith Jackson address the audience during a Q & A Sessions at the Legends & Legacies event. Proceeds from Legends and Legacies are used to fund scholarships for football student athletes.

Athletics Between the fall and spring commencement exercises, more than 60 student-athletes earned their degrees. Eleven of our 16 sports teams hold team cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 or higher. Over the past three years, 38 student-athletes have been inducted in Chi Alpha Sigma, the national college athlete honor society, holding cumulative grade point averages of 3.4 to 4.0. This past academic year, 86 Golden Lions and Lady Lions made the SWAC commissioner’s all-academic team. The women’s tennis team, with a combined GPA of 3.78, had the highest grade point average of any team in the conference, male or female. Working with the NCAA’s academic progress rate (APR) system, we’re making progress while at the same time we still have some challenges. Men’s basketball is out of the APR penalty stage, but football and men’s golf are still in the penalty stage until APR penalties, including post-season bans for the upcoming year. The following has helped or will help to strengthen our academic support efforts: 1. Created a director of student-athlete academic services position. This person is aggressively staying on top of things, making sure we better track the successes and challenges of our student- athletes in the classroom. 2. Thanks to the efforts of Chancellor Alexander, more student-athletes are afforded the opportunity to attend summer school. That’s major. 3. New student-athlete academic success center to open this fall in the HPER Complex. Improvements are seen across the board for all our teams.

The Visual & Performing Arts UAPB THEATRE: Contributions Take Thespians to Amazing Heights The UAPB Theatre Department is appreciative of all donations made to provide an exceptional learning experience for our students! Because of the generosity of our donors, stories come alive when ink and paper combine to unfold incredible characters revealed onstage. The actors are equipped with skills that are performed as the curtains open and are empowered to utilize the same skills as the curtain closes. A donation to the theatre department is the realization of a dream where students are afforded the opportunity to compete with other thespians on a national and local level. High priority is placed on academics because the realization of life after college is essential to the lifeblood of the student’s educational existence. This past year was considered as the “triumphant theatrical season” and it proved to be true as students received meritorious awards from the Region 6 Arkansas College Theatre Festival as well as embraced awards won at the National Association of Speech and Dramatic Arts. The season was filled with a variety of genres as the actors began the season with a Greek Tragedy ”Hecuba”, a hip hop children’s production entitled “Cinderella: The Remix”, The Dramatic Production “Drama Queen’s” a performance that welcomed guest from the Women’s Prison Unit and it culminated in an Improvisation show. Financial assistance continues to serve as a necessary tool for the continuation of producing quality theatre. We are grateful for the amazing support we receive from our donors. Johnathan Howard (second from left) is joined by other summer institute classmates near the Great Wall of China.

OIPS: UAPB Students Shine in China UAPB donors helped to make the critical difference for university students who set their sights on traveling to China during the 2015 Summer Semester, Term II session. Five undergraduate majors in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) majors traveled to China through the China Initiative, which was launched during the 2014-2015 academic year by the Office of International Studies and Programs (OIPS). Working in collaboration with other academic departments, the initiative aims to increase opportunities for faculty and students to travel, study and conduct research in China.

Sydney Reed (far left) and Anthony Priyo Gomes (center, kneeling) pose for a photo with fellow summer institute classmates at the closing ceremony of the program.

This summer’s education abroad experience was a pilot initiative that laid the foundation for more groups to follow. Participants included Andrea Carpenter (biology) and Precious Taylor (agriculture), who participated in educational and cultural programs in Hainan Province, Beijing and Shanghai. Jonathan Howard (computer science) traveled to various provinces during a three-week summer camp sponsored by Sias International University. Anthony Gomes (computer science) and Sydney Reed (chemistry) enrolled in Fudan University’s international summer session in Shanghai. Sydney Reed also joined Andrea and Precious for a one-week program at Shanghai Ocean University. All students studied Chinese and attended classes focused on diverse topics, including Mandarin Chinese, the history of China, minority issues in Hainan Province and international business. “These students have used various terms to describe their experience abroad – challenging, exhilarating, awed, transformed, overwhelmed, just to name a few,” noted Dr. Pamela D. Moore, Associate Dean for Global Engagement. “When we asked if they would do it again, they all raised their hands. Ono a scale of 1-10, they also ranked the importance of education abroad at 9 or 10. They strongly believe this experience should be made available to as many UAPB students as possible.”

PRIORITY GIVING All donors are important to the advancement of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). Donors who give to one of the three top priority areas (Unrestricted, Lifeline Scholarship and General Scholarships) add greater strength to their gift. Of the priority areas noted, unrestricted dollars give the university the greatest flexibility to address important areas of need – those that directly impact the students we educate. On the following pages are the names of individuals who have supported the plea for donations to the areas of unrestricted, Lifeline Endowed Fund, general scholarships, the 24/10 Campaign, the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex and the Dorothy Magett Fiddmont – New Millennium Leaders. Gifts were received July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015.

Career Services: Donor Support Making an Amazing Difference The Youth Motivation Task Force (YMTF) Program is a premier program led by the Office of Career Services at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. It has been on the campus for forty-three years. The role YMTF is to prepare students to make the transition from college to the real world of work. Consultants from business, government and education engage UAPB students over a three day period by conducting career development workshops, classroom presentations and one-on-one consultations. We also send a team of consultants and UAPB students to four of our local junior and senior high schools to speak to students about transitioning from high school to college. Additionally, we culminate our event with a nationally recognized leading public speaker that inspire attendees by candidly sharing life stories, work experiences and tips on what it takes to survive in the real world. YMTF provides opportunities for our students to: • Learn life skills to assist in both professional and personal development. • Gain the resources and knowledge needed to be successful in the job market. • Participate in workshops, classroom discussions, and one-on-one consultations. • Develop leadership, communication and networking skills. • Build a network of contacts for future employment. • Obtain summer internships, Cooperative Education or permanent placements. • Acquire mentors to assist in their career development. — continued on page 37

contiuned from CAREER SERVICES

Initially, the program was financed by the National Alliance of Business (NAB). In 1985, funding for the program became the responsibility of the University. Over the years we have had many corporate sponsors. As a sponsor you will:

Alumni Bennie and VeLois Bowers pose with gospel recording artist, Kirk Franklin.

• Make an investment in future leaders. • Help create a pipeline for employers to access highly qualified diverse students. • Have a profound and important impact on student academic and professional development. • Opportunity to interview and hire the top students. • Have an impact on student retention and graduation. In addition as a sponsor you will receive: • Branding of your logo in our official program booklet and website. • Advertisement on UAPB TV/Radio and local newspaper. • Full page colored ad in program guide. • Opportunity to invite participants as consultants from your organization, depending on sponsorship level. • Option for an Executive to be the keynote speaker for the opening banquet. • Opportunity to serve on panels or conduct a workshop. • Opportunity to interview prospective employees for internships or permanent placements with private interview room. Due to the weather, we were not able to have the full program in 2015. In 2014, our sponsors helped us impact over 1,500 students (58% of the student body) on campus and 650 local junior and senior high school students.

CORPORATE AND FOUNDATION MATCHING GIFT PROGRAM The University continues to be grateful for the support of its corporate partners. The companies and corporate foundations listed on this page are those that have provided contributions to the University and its Foundation through their matching gift program. The University urges its alumni and friends to investigate the matching gift program that may be offered through their companies. Some companies offer programs, which will match one-for-one, two-for-one, or three-for-one. The program may even extend to the employee’s spouse. This is an excellent way to multiply gift dollars and have a greater impact on academic programs. To take advantage of a company’s matching gift policy an employee may obtain a form from their company’s corporate giving office and send it in along with their gift. Students from our LIONS program actively engaged.
