This book is in tribute to the late

EDUCATOR | PHILANTHROPIST | CHURCH LEADER

I have now been here at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) for five years, and I am still amazed at the genuine support and love for our institution shown by our constituents – alumni, faculty, staff, and community supporters. Every year during this “Golden Time of Year,” I look forward to seeing a multitude of individuals like you who strongly and continuously make a significant and positive impact on students attending UAPB. Each year, hundreds of students enter the university with anticipation of receiving a quality education. And each year faculty, staff and administrators begin the school year anticipating the opportunity to assist in educating some of the brightest minds in our society. Everyone––students, faculty, staff, and administrators––expect to be equipped with the resources needed to be successful in each respective role. You are the key to the successes we experience. Some of our achievements are a product of a 5-year strategic plan introduced in 2015, and that plan continues to drive us in pursuit of student success, growth of a robust research agenda, and an even deeper connection to the city of Pine Bluff through campus improvement. Your gifts have already helped us fuel our student success programs, offering scholarship assistance to students across the university. You help us bring in some of the highest achieving students and help us keep those who are struggling financially or academically. In addition, you have assisted us strengthen our deep connection to the city of Pine Bluff, with campus expansion and growth that have benefitted not only the UAPB community, but the city at large. Student success, faculty excellence, research impact, campus expansion are all part of us achieving the GOLD standard. We want to build on our record of success and further heighten our trajectory, and we need family like you to help us do it. We extend our heartfelt appreciation in helping make the difference. Here’s to making a strong and lasting difference through continued financial and volunteer support of our students and university!

Laurence B. Alexander, J.D., Ph.D. Chancellor

Your investment in our students has reaped big returns! Scholarships, experiential learning experiences, extracurricular activities, and improved learning environments were all made possible by the resources you gave to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. We thank you for your generosity! Within the pages of this report, we have given you a glimpse of the impact you have made on our students; however, our pages are too finite to report the complete immediate benefit and long-term effect you have made. We hope you are pleased and proud to know that you are making a positive difference that will snowball into even more investments in our students—many students who were helped by your generosity have vowed to give back so that they in turn may help others. We have made significant progress because of you, and for this we are grateful.

ANNUAL GIVING DRIVE Annual contributions for the period July 1, 2017–June 30, 2018, totaled $3,901,102.

Our donors designated their gifts consistent with their interests and chose a variety of ways to make an investment in our students. Many donors gave unrestricted gifts so that unanticipated student needs could be met. As a result, the Annual Giving Drive consisted of several successful initiatives. Though all specific initiatives that gave a positive impetus to our fundraising efforts are too numerous to mention herein, special note is made of a few that have a far-reaching and long term impact:

2009-2010 $140,000

Lifeline Endowed Fund The Lifeline Endowed Fund was established in 2009 to address the emergency and dire need situations that often arise with our students. Similarly, donations made October 1, 2012 – September 30, 2017, will also be matched. (Please note that, donors do not qualify for higher giving level because of the match made by the Title III grant). As of June 30, 2017, the Lifeline Endowed Fund had reached $ (including pending matching funds). Dorothy Magett Fiddmont New Millennium Leaders (DMF-NML) The Fiddmont Leaders initiative remains a strong impetus for scholarship support of our students.

The approach of the year 2000 was a time of excitement, fear, and anticipation. There was much ado, much preparation, and much trepidation as to how technology would make the transition. Would mass transit systems in large cities be immobilized? Would Wall Street and major financial institutions collapse? Was UAPB positioned for the 21st century and all that it entailed? Indeed, the new millennium was upon us, and just as pundits the world-over readied for international and national technological challenges, one individual came forth with an idea that would keep UAPB in the forefront of educational excellence.

had always had the good fortune to have persons who were deeply committed to its mission, goals, and objectives. The group now being formed would comprise some of the individuals from the earlier years of Arkansas AM&N College and many more from more recent years of the institution. They would be the New Millennium Leaders. As ambassadors, they would be the individuals who could be counted on to share the many positive things happening at the university. They would be kept abreast of happenings at the university by remaining connected, involved and well-informed.

Dr. Dorothy Magett Fiddmont set forth the idea of identifying a group of individuals who would agree to be ambassadors for the university and as evidence of their commitment donate $2,000 to provide much needed scholarship funds for deserving students at UAPB. The institution, from its earliest days as Branch Normal,

The Millennium Leaders have met the challenge. They have stayed the course. Through good times and not so good times, the Millennium Leaders have been strong advocates for the university. They have focused on all the good and positive things UAPB has forever encompassed in the midst of no publicity, poor publicity

YOUR GENEROSITY IN ACTION In 2017 – 2018, your financial investment in our students assisted with the cost of attending college and the quality of education they received:

• Over $670,000 was made available to students in the form of awards, and scholarships for tuition, fees and books; • Hundreds of students were able to participate in extracurricular activities (e.g. band, choir, athletics) and attend career development activities on and off campus; • Classroom supplies and instructional material were purchased; and • Overall, UAPB’s academic programs, extracurricular offerings and physical plant continue to improve. YOU helped to make dreams come true!

Here is what our students said:

“Thank you so much for allowing me to be a recipient of this scholarship. I recently did an internship where I shadowed a loan officer. I was able to pull credit accounts, check balances, and offer credit counseling. When the internship was over, I was offered a job to work after graduation, training to be a loan officer. It’s rewarding to know that I made customers happy and satisfied with their finances.” -Jalen, ‘21

“After I graduate, I will apply for medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. The Southeast Arkansas Delta area has sparse representation regarding medical students, and a shortage of physicians (mainly specialists). Many residents suffer from chronic illness. I would like to aid in eradicating these issues through pursuing a career in medicine and eventually practicing in the region. I give thanks for your generous contribution as it will aid me in continuing my educational pursuits.” -Elizabeth, ‘21

“The last two fall semesters, I have been honored for my GPA. I am keeping up my grades for the school year, and with this scholarship I will be able to do the same this fall. Coming from a single parent home and being the youngest of four children has been difficult journey for me and my family. I have pressed through all our adversities and believe God has a greater plan for my life. My mother has been challenged with numerous health issues and is taking care of my mentally ill brother. We remain prayerful daily for their complete healing, so this scholarship will lift some of the burdens on my family.” -Chastane, ‘20

“You have lightened my financial burden which allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school, learning. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me. Again, thank you.” -Malachi, ‘19

“Thank you for the financial assistance that you have provided to me to aid in paying off my tuition. I will give back to my university any way I can and especially by sending students to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Because of your assistance, I am even more determined to graduate and become a productive alumnus of this great university.” -Derrick, ‘21

UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT PINE BLUFF 18 ANNUAL DONORS REPORT: JULY 1, 2017 - JUNE 30, 2018

“I am quite excited about continuing my college education and working towards my career goals. This scholarship will assist me with getting the necessary books and supplies needed for my classes. I intend to work extremely hard and take full advantage of all opportunities that come my way.” -Kevaris, ‘22

“Upon graduation, I plan to continue my education and pass my Certified Public Accountant exam and eventually own an accounting firm, so that I can give back to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. I would like to thank you for this generous financial assistance and I deeply appreciate it.” -James, ‘20

“Receiving this financial contribution has enabled me to concentrate on what is important for my education. Your act of financial generosity has allowed me to be one step closer to my goal and has inspired me to help others by giving back to the community. I hope that one day I will be able to help other students achieve their goal just as you have helped me.” -Tanisha, ‘19

“Receiving this financial contribution has enabled me to concentrate on what is important for my education. Your act of financial generosity has allowed me to be one step closer to my goal and has inspired me to help others by giving back to the community. I hope that one day I will be able to help other students achieve their goal just as you have helped me. ” -Tanisha, ‘19

“Thank you for providing me with a scholarship to help with my college expenses. Without your generous contributions towards my education, I would not be able to purchase books and other essentials for success as I pursue my degree. After spending my high school years attending the STEM Saturday program offered at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, I knew that this university had everything I needed in order to develop my skills in coding. With your financial support, my dreams can come true.” -Darryl, ‘22

“This scholarship has been nothing short of a blessing for me because it will allowed me to truly be able to focus more on my education and be a little less stressed about having to work every shift to cover the remaining balance that I have. I am very appreciative of this blessing and can assure you that I will put forth my very best efforts to achieve my goals and my degree.” -Lauren, ‘20

“I chose to attend the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff because of its great history. Upon graduation, I plan on seeking employment in a school district teaching secondary school music and possibly apply for a graduates program to further my studies. I am indebted to your generosity. I will remember to give back to my alma mater as you have set the example. Again, thanks for your assistance.” -Tyler, 22

“I would like to thank you for this financial assistance. It was rough growing up in East Saint Louis because I lived in a crime filled neighborhood. I managed to avoid all the negative things around me and focus on succeeding in life. I worked hard and studied day and night to get a high score on my ACT, because I knew the ACT score would open the doors for scholarships and financial assistance during my quest in higher education. I took the exam with pride, graduated and received a composite score of 24. I am proud to be my mother’s first child to go to college.” -Cortez, ‘22

“This scholarship enriches the lives of the students because it eases the burden of tuition and other unpredicted financial burdens. This life changing scholarship is important to me because I am a twin. Receiving this scholarship will help alleviate the stress from my mother putting her children through school to receive a higher education.” -Mia, ‘22

“I chose to attend the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff because it felt like a home away from home. From the moment I set foot on campus, I could tell that I was in an environment that would take care of me and nurture me while preparing me for life after college. Thank you for your contribution and investment in my future. This will give my family and me peace of mind as we approach the next school year.” -Jaeden, ’20

LIONS Program provides catalyst for student success submitted by Dr. Linda Okiror Vice Chancellor, Enrollment Management & Student Success

The Learning Institute and Opportunities for New Students (LIONS) Program at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) is a summer residential academic enrichment program that assists new freshmen admitted to UAPB in making a successful transition from high school and home, to college life. The five week program assists freshmen students admitted to UAPB for the fall semester who want to get a jump-start on their college career at UAPB. Since 2008, 1046 students have participated in the LIONS Program with a fall semester enrollment rate of 98%. During summer 2018, 123 students attended the Program and completed the session with a 3.39 GPA. Donations to the University from individuals, several nation-wide Alumni Chapters, and other agencies such as Entergy, AT&T, the Strong Foundation Trust, Union Pacific and Walton Family Foundation have assisted LIONS participants with paying the application fee, and in some cases, full tuition, room/board and books. The LIONS participants who have received donor funding are

grateful and stated that “without help from the donors, they wouldn’t have been able to attend the Program”. Mr. Sydney Williams, a 2018 LIONS participant from Little Rock, AR stated that “receiving donor funding allowed him to fulfill his childhood dream of attending UAPB, and by participating in the LIONS Program gave him the opportunity for employment in a physics lab during the Program.” Ms. Rocoya Anglin, a 2018 participant from Belleville, IL, and the current Miss LIONS Program stated that “attending the LIONS Program was a great experience, it gave her more self-confidence, and allowed her to develop lasting friendships.” Building a strong student cohort is the cornerstone of the Program, providing students with a supportive and caring experience. Sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Post-secondary Education, Strengthening Institutions, Title III, Part B, Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program, LIONS Program participants benefit from a set of experiences that contribute greatly to a more academically prepared, socially mature and knowledgeable first-year student. Peace and thanks to all who made this possible.

UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT PINE BLUFF 34 ANNUAL DONORS REPORT: JULY 1, 2017 - JUNE 30, 2018

PRIORITY GIVING The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) relies heavily on unrestricted gifts that provide flexibility in use. Student needs, classroom and laboratory enhancements, extra-curricular activities, and expanded learning experiences all require funds to keep pace with the job market and new and innovative career options. The demand for revenue in such areas fluctuate and only unrestricted dollars provide the resources commensurate with the need. Unrestricted giving is among our top three priority areas for fundraising. Your investment in scholarships help us to recruit some of the brightest minds our nation has to offer. We are able to keep pace with other institutions in recruiting academically advanced students. Creating a revenue stream for athletics from private dollars has the snowball effect of not only helping student athletes. It releases monies once used for athletics to be used to fund other critical areas. Gifts were received July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018.

CORPORATE AND FOUNDATION MATCHING GIFT PROGRAM The University continues to be grateful for the support of its corporate partners. The companies and corporate foundations listed on this page are those that have provided contributions to the University and its Foundation through their matching gift program. The University urges its alumni and friends to investigate the matching gift program that may be offered through their companies. Some companies offer programs, which will match one-for-one, two-for-one, or three-for-one. The program may even extend to the employee’s spouse. This is an excellent way to multiply gift dollars and have a greater impact on academic programs. To take advantage of a company’s matching gift policy an employee may obtain a form from their company’s corporate giving office and send it in along with their gift.
