Lawrence A. Davis, Jr., Ph.D.
LAWRENCE A. DAVIS, JR., Ph.D. FORMER CHANCELLOR 1991 - 2012
Dr. Davis began his close-up and personal relationship with UAPB at the age of four when his father, Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Sr., began his tenure at the AM&N College (now UAPB) as a teacher, later serving as president and chancellor. His early education – nursery school through college (except for the year spent at Merrill High School from which he graduated) – was obtained on the campus of AM&N College. Graduating from AM&N with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, he went on to earn a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He also attended Iowa State University of Science and Technology at Ames, where he earned a doctorate in engineering mechanics, an area of mathematics not to be confused with mechanical engineering. His additional studies include a year at Brown University at Providence, Rhode Island, studying physics; a summer at the University of Oklahoma at Norman, studying computer science; two summers at Oak Ridge (Tennessee) Associate Universities, studying nuclear reactors and acid rains, and post graduate studies at Harvard University. Other signature projects and events credited to Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Jr., include: • • • •
Retired a $3.5 million operation deficit Developed an Enrollment Management Plan Developed a “Real Cash Reserve” Completed the Master plan for the growth and development of the campus and immediate community which included basic campus infrastructure along with the construction of Dawson-Hicks Hall

and Caine-Gilleland Hall, Applied Science/Aquaculture-Fisheries Laboratory, and the renovation of a modernized and computerized library Constructed an ultra-modern facility for the School of Business and Management Obtained reaffirmation of accreditation for programs in human sciences, nursing, social work, teacher education, and ten year institutional reaffirmation by the North Central Association for Colleges and Schools
Dr. Davis’ professional career began with a brief stint at Mississippi Vocational College, now Mississippi Valley State University at Itta Bena, before returning to AM&N as an instructor of mathematics. Davis swiftly moved through the ranks to assistant professor, associate professor, full professor, chairman of the Department of Mathematics and Physics, dean
of Arts and Sciences, and dean of Liberal and Fine Arts before becoming Chancellor at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Through the unanimous choice of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Davis was appointed chancellor in November of 1991 and immediately embarked on moving the university aggressively to address the challenge of funding new ways to better serve the university’s clientele and to serve a more heterogeneous student body. His first year was filling his cabinet and other key positions including three vice-chancellors, a chief of security, and athletic director. The football program was restored after a two year ban and a new coaching staff was immediately hired. Within two years, the football program was at an all-time high, playing • • • • • • •

for the national championship of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Division I. With his key personnel in place, Dr. Davis labored to address as many of the historical concerns as possible, while giving impetus to enhancing the teaching, research and service functions that

Black Colleges and Universities; the Industrial Foundation; Partners for a Better Pine Bluff; the Merrill High School Restoration Alliance; the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas. He is an active member and deacon of Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church. the university had performed well for more than 100 years. He oversaw the completion of a multi-million dollar building to house the School of Business and Management. Soon with the support of Diane Gilleland, the director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, and Governor Jim Guy Tucker, the university received a $30 million appropriation from the state to upgrade the campus facilities. As a result of the largest state appropriation in the history of the university, Dr. Davis was successful in attaining his initial goals for enhancing the service functions of the university.
He is the recipient of many accolades and awards as the result of his professional and volunteer work. He has received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from each of his alma maters.

He is married to the former Ethel Grant. They are the proud parents of two children; Sonya Davis Cole, and Lawrence A. Davis III. They have nine grandchildren

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Foundation Fund Board (formerly UAPB Development Council) is established as a non-profit unincorporated organization for charitable and educational purposes. Its primary goal is to provide assistance to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff through the University of Arkansas Foundation, Incorporated, and the Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas. The specific objectives of the UAPB Foundation Fund Board include the following: a.

Foreword Fundraising initiatives at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff address institutional funding needs with an emphasis on three major areas (unrestricted funds, scholarships, and athletics) that significantly impact the ability of UAPB to deliver educational excellence. The results of our fundraising efforts are reported herein.

ANNUAL GIVING DRIVE
Annual contributions for the period July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012, totaled $914,768.02. Our donors designated their gifts consistent with their interests and chose a variety of ways to give support. Many donors gave unrestricted gifts so that unanticipated student needs could be met. As a result, the Annual Giving Drive consisted of several successful initiatives. Though all specific initiatives that gave a positive impetus to our fundraising efforts are too numerous to mention here, special note is made of a few that have a far-reaching and long term impact: lifeline endowed fund
The Lifeline Endowed Fund was established to provide students in dire need of financial assistance the opportunity to attend college at UAPB. Funds raised will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education/HBCU (Title III) Initiatives. As of June 30, 2012, the Lifeline Endowed Fund had reached nearly $311,000.00

The Fiddmont Leaders initiative remains a strong impetus for scholarship support of our students. All donations to the fund from October 1, 2007 – September 30, 2012, will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education/HBCU (Title III) Initiatives. (Please note that, donors do not qualify for higher giving level because of the match made by the Title III funds and their employers’ matching gifts.) FORENSIC ASSOCIATION (DEBATE TEAM) The freshmen from four years ago when the team was first brought back to campus graduated this past May. They are going on to even greater successes than those they earned on the debate team. Three of the students are now in law school, one is a manager at Sears saving for law school, and one is a counselor for abused children. The team now has twenty seven members and grows daily. Greater success and even higher honors are in the future for George “Doc” Jones beloved debate team. It was with the support of our alumni and friends that the debate team was provided the opportunity to bring such prestigious awards and high honors for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
The George “Doc” Jones Forensic Association (debate team) had amazing results during the 2011-2012 debate season. The team returned from the International Public Debate Association’s National tournament with TEN national awards. UAPB was proud to have Travis Adams from Blytheville, AR win the first place trophy for being the best speaker in the nation. It was a moment of pure joy to watch him pick up the beautiful engraved silver tray in Huntsville, TX. Christopher Cooper, also from Blytheville, brought additional honor to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff by being named the ninth place speaker. Travis and Christopher also were one of the top sixteen pairs in the team division. Joseph Robinson from Little Rock, AR and Cecilia Nuby from Lawrence, KS earned the fifth place team award for the season. Among the other awards picked up were; the second place online tournament award, the season long fifth place varsity speaker, and the twelfth place Scholastic Award. The entire team was jubilant when they were awarded the tenth place sweepstakes award. The sweepstakes award is given to the teams with the greatest number of wins as a team. Triumphing over so many other prestigious universities, the UAPB team deserves to be celebrated. This national tournament was the culmination of a season of awards. There is no longer any room in the trophy case for all of the trophies. The fall season began with 33 wins at Henderson State that resulted in five awards. At the University of Arkansas at Monticello, the team had 31 wins, placed first in team debate, and brought home five more awards. In Jackson, TN, the home of Union University, the team won an octofinalist award. The Southern Forensic Championship resulted in 31

wins and seven awards. In the spring, the debate team began with Henderson State and enjoyed 20 team wins and four awards. East Texas Baptist from Marshall, TX and Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX worked together to provide two tournaments in one weekend. The team was able to get double experience and double points toward the national ranking in one weekend. The 29 wins and seven trophies which included two speaker awards found the team coming home with another wrecking crew award. At this point, a national ranking was in reach. The wrecking crew award is for the highest percentage of wins from a team collectively. As UAPB only took three people, it was a high honor. This was the first time that the UAPB team had won this prestigious honor and elation was felt all around. In Springdale, AR, the team was the grateful guests of the Har-ber High School collegiate debate tournament. The crowd went wild when the first place speaker was from UAPB. The drive to Northwest Arkansas was certainly worth it with 23 team wins and four more awards for the trophy case. Louisiana State University in Alexandria found the UAPB team winning another wrecking crew award, again with only three debaters. Three trophies and 16 team wins left the Louisiana crew knowing that the UAPB debaters had been to town. The final tournament before nationals was at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Bringing home a mere 20 wins and only two trophies motivated the team to work as hard as possible leading up to the national tournament. The hard work paid off as you read earlier.

CHOIR
Alumni please know that we greatly appreciate all that you do for the Vesper Choir. You are a source of pride to us and we want you to know that your prayers, support and interest in us are sources of inspiration. The Vesper Choir had an outstanding year of service both on- and off-campus. In addition to our annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah”, the Vesper Choir performed an evening of opera favorites from operas such as: Carmen, The Magic Flute, Aida, and Lohengrin with the Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestra in March. Our Choir students were featured as soloists. The Vesper Choir had several notable performances including a performance at the State Capitol in the Rotunda and on the steps of the Capitol Building to commemorate the accomplishments of Governor Winthrop Rockefeller and Mr. Sonny Walker in their efforts to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King when he was assassinated. The Choir also performed in Camden, Dermott, W. Memphis, N. Little Rock, Little Rock, Southaven, MS, and in Memphis. The visibility and artistic reputation of the Vesper Choir continued to increase on the national level with two of our students participating in the “105VOH” (Voices of History), the national HBCU choir event that was held at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C in September of 2011. Those two students also participated in a follow-up event that took place in Nashville at the Grand Ole Opry in January. In September of this year, we had two students, Steven Howard and Phyllissa Dunk, to appear at the “105VOH” event which took place in Washington, D.C. at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium. Phyllissa was also the regional winner in the vocal competition. The spring 2012 Vesper Choir tour was a resounding success and our students were excellent representatives of the university. The Vesper Choir traveled to Kansas City, KS and MO, to Las Vegas and to Los Angeles. The alumni in each
of the cities provided lodging, many meals and opportunities for entertainment. The arrangements for our Kansas City stay were organized by Ms. Tanya Townsend, alumni chapter president, with the assistance of members of the local alumni chapter. While there, we sang at Second Baptist for the “Touch of Grace Ministries Int’l” (our concert was broadcast “live” over the “web”), at Zion Travelers MBC and at Friendship Baptist Church. In Las Vegas, our hosts were Dr. Harvey Williams and the Las Vegas Chapter. The arrangements they made for us were great. We were housed at the Circus-Circus Hotel and were treated to a reception held in our honor by the Fordyce Club of Las Vegas. The Choir sang at Cheyenne High School and at The Great Commission Interdenominational Church in Las Vegas. The Choir then traveled to Los Angeles where Robert and Janice Whitfield and the Southern California Alumni Chapter provided our lodging, several meals, a visit to cultural attractions and performances at two high schools (Compton High and Dominguez High School) and at three churches: Bethel A.M.E., Bryant Temple A.M.E. and Grand A.M.E. The enthusiasm of our alumni and the audiences was great! Special events for the present academic year include a performance in November at the Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, MS for a celebration of HBCU choirs, and with the Arkansas Choral Society in their performance of Handel’s “Messiah” to be held at the First Pentecostal Church in North Little Rock on November 29. We are looking forward to participating in February, 2013, in the mega-choral event celebrating the “Spiritual”. The concert will be held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and will involve choirs from at least 30 colleges and universities.

The University Museum and Cultural Center, established in the spring of 2005, is self-supporting and depends solely on grants and contributions of donors. The Museum, is home to the “Keepers of the Spirit: The L.A. Davis, Sr. Historical Collection” which documents the more than 130 year history of UAPB. In celebration of the university’s 139th Founders’ Day observance, the University Museum and Cultural Center recently unveiled historical markers that have been placed around the university’s campus and throughout the city of Pine Bluff.

In addition to the Keepers of the Spirit exhibit, the museum also features a large collection of photographs, catalogs, yearbooks, letters, artifacts, portraits and other ephemera that document the lives of the people who helped to shape the history of the university and the Delta. The story of this institution is told through a series of large scale photographic panels with text, memorabilia and other artifacts. The museum also offers innovative educational programs and changing exhibits on the mezzanine level designed to increase awareness of the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans.
