UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences 2012-2013 Annual Report

Message from the Dean I am delighted to present the 2012-2013 Annual Report for the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia. This has been an incredibly exciting and dynamic academic year for the Faculty as we continue to see significant growth and development in all our areas of activity. During the course of this year, our new building was fully occupied, bringing together faculty, staff and students in state-of-the-art, world-class facilities. The building, which has won numerous awards in the past year, was made possible through the vision of former Dean Bob Sindelar and the incredible generosity of the Province of BC and a large number of donors, many of whom are Faculty alumni. We have continued to provide an outstanding educational environment for our students, one which has been greatly enhanced by the availability of a wide range of new clinical teaching facilities that reinforce our commitment to a strongly patient-centered approach to learning and practice. A major project for this year has been the development of our new entry-to-practice PharmD program that is currently being finalized – this will accept its first student cohort in September 2015 and will further enhance our reputation as leaders and innovators in the education and training of pharmacists. It is clear that many of our graduates go on to influence the development of Pharmacy practice and we have also continued to strengthen this area of our profile, with new innovations such as the Pharmacists Clinic, Canada’s first university-affiliated patient care pharmacy. This has also been a year of very significant achievement in research for the Faculty – our researchers have won many awards and have worked with partners all over the world to investigate key problems that are highly relevant to human health and disease. We have also strengthened our research portfolio within the Faculty, with the appointment of seven new research-focused faculty members during the course of the last academic year. This is a fantastic injection of new blood into our Faculty and will support us in building critical mass in our areas of major research strength, and help to ensure we remain competitive on the international stage in the future. We are looking forward to the coming year with great enthusiasm and optimism, with all members of the Faculty community working together closely to continue our commitment to making a difference.

Accomplishments & Initiatives Accreditation Review In November 2012, a site review of the Faculty’s Entry-to-Practice and Doctor of Pharmacy programs was conducted by a team from the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP) led by Dr. Wayne Hindmarsh. The review noted the enhanced profile of the Faculty, which was attributed to dynamic leadership and committed, hardworking faculty and staff. The Faculty was complimented for progress made in a number of areas, including governance, communication, financial and human resources, and student enrolment, and for the quality of the Faculty’s academic programs. Challenges identified by the review team included quantity and quality of practice sites for experiential learning, and implementation and monitoring of the Faculty’s strategic plan. At the June 11, 2013 meeting of the CCAPP Board of Directors, the full accreditation for the six-year term 2013 to 2019 was awarded to both the B.Sc.(Pharm.) and PharmD programs. PharmD Task Force Led by Co-Chairs, Dr. Peter Loewen and Dr. Glenda MacDonald, a PharmD Task Force consisting of faculty, students, and practitioners, has been established to guide the process of developing and implementing both an entry-topractice PharmD program and a flexible post-baccalaureate PharmD program. The following events have occurred and milestones achieved: • October 25, 2012: First Faculty Town Hall meeting, at which Task Force Co-Chairs laid out their intentions • December 3, 2012: First meeting of the PharmD Task Force • January, 2013: Leads recruited for Admissions & Prerequisites, Assessment, Experiential Education, Interprofessional Education, Medication Management, and Scientific Foundations Working Groups. • February, 2013: Working Groups received a set of guiding questions from the Task Force • February 28, 2013: Meeting with representatives of the BC Ministry of Health and Ministry of Advanced Education • March 15, 2013: First Student Town Hall meeting • April, 2013: Project Manager, Ginette Vallée, hired • May 30, 2013: Deadline for Working Group reports • June 20, 2013: Curriculum Retreat for faculty and all Working Group members facilitated by Dr. Isabeau Iqbal of the OESD and Ms. Janice Johnson from the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology. Additional Faculty and Student Town Hall meetings are planned, and it is anticipated that the first draft of the program proposal will be reviewed by the Curriculum Committee and the Faculty Advisory Council early in the fall of 2013. Openness and transparency of process is a guiding principle of the Task Force, and in this spirit the following are accessible via the Internet: Task Force mission, terms of reference, membership, and Minutes: http://wiki.ubc.ca/Documentation:E2P-PharmD/ TaskForce Program overview, other draft documents, Town Hall recordings, and feedback form: http://www.pharmacy.ubc.ca/ programs/e2ppharmd UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences 2012-2013 Annual Report | Page 7

Academic Report Educational Technology New strides have been made in the Faculty’s mandate to create an enhanced blended-learning environment. A new strategic plan for the use of educational technology within the upcoming academic year has been completed. Further, the Faculty has begun to collaborate with the Faculty of Medicine and Ambit Consulting to create the Educational Transformation Charter, which will aim to: • Establish an inventory of educational services (both physical and virtual) available to the Faculty (internally, and those available through partnerships via groups like CTLT, UBC-IT and the Faculty of Medicine) • Establish opportunities by cross referencing requirements with available education services • Establish a change management approach that will allow the Faculty to begin leveraging opportunities for a possible distributed program In addition to the flexible learning grants received, the Faculty has equipped new rooms (including a personal recording room) with lecture recording capabilities and has transitioned to personal desktop recording software for new flipped-class opportunities. Several rooms have been modified to allow for increased AV functionality, while audio upgrades are planned for the lecture theaters this year. All AV deficiencies have been catalogued by UBC-IT and will be addressed in 2013/2014. Several new pilot projects are being developed, including the use of new online assessment software and new videoconference capabilities that could greatly enhance the Faculty’s assessment program and outreach capabilities, respectively. Scholarship of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Practice (SoTL/SoCP) Research Stream The SoTL/SoCP Research Stream, formally established in March 2012, currently includes 29 faculty members who share an interest in pharmacy education research. With the assistance of a $5,000 Innovation Grant from the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Program, activities of the group this year include: • A half-day “SoTLology 101” workshop in February 2013, featuring presentations from keynote speakers, Dr. Kevin Eva, Senior Scientist, and Dr. Angela Towle, Senior Scholar, from CHES, and facilitated small-group and plenary discussions of educational research interests and current projects • Creation of a mini-grant program to support the conduct and/or dissemination of projects, including: • Implementing a Module in a Non-Modular Curriculum (Ms. Colleen Brady & Dr. Linda Tran) • Measuring Professional Identity in Pharmacy Students (Ms. Lynda Eccott) • Developing a Code of Conduct for the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Dr. Patricia Gerber) • Implementation of Human Patient Simulation Technology to Teach Physical Assessment to Pharmacy Students (Dr. Kathy Seto, Ms. Colleen Brady, Mr. Tamiz Kanji, Mr. Tony Seet) • Online Summative Assessment in an Undergraduate Therapeutics Course (Dr. Peter Loewen, Mr. Jon-Paul Marchand) • Development and Implementation of a Remedial Program for Undergraduate Pharmacy Students (Ms. Janice Moshenko, Dr. Kathy Seto) • Narratives of Care: Integration of the Medical Humanities in a Pharmacy Skills Course (Ms. Marion Pearson • Implementation of Human Patient Simulation Technology to Teach Physical Assessment to Pharmacy Students (Dr. Kathy Seto, Ms. Colleen Brady, Mr. Tamiz Kanji, Mr. Tony Seet) • The Merits of Formative Oral Exams in an Entry-to-Practice Pharmacy Program (Dr. Arun Verma, Mr. Gary Peng) Cross-Professions Collaboration Since 2011, Dr. David Fielding has been a participant in a collaborative educational research effort with colleagues in medicine, dentistry, nursing, physical therapy and education, facilitated by leaders at CHES. The original, unrealized goal of the group was to develop a joint Canada Research Chair (CRC) application. Subsequently, the group settled on curricular integration as an area of mutual interest and organized the 2012 Celebrate Learning event described above, bringing Ms. Marion Pearson into the group. Since then, the group has been considering its structure and function. In July 2013, the Faculty hosted the group for a self-reflection session, facilitated in part by Dr. Isabeau Iqbal of the OESD. A subset of the group is currently developing a discussion paper based on this session that will assist the group in reexamining its membership, developing a vision for group’s future, and planning a launch event. Academic Report Professionalism Committee Established in 2012, the Professionalism Committee chaired by Dr. Patricia Gerber has focused its efforts on developing a Code of Conduct and revising the White Coat Ceremony and the curriculum related to professionalism. After a thorough and inclusive consultation process with faculty, staff, and undergraduate and graduate students, the Office of the University Counsel, Faculty Relations, and UBC Human Resources, the Code of Conduct, which is intended to enhance the culture of professionalism and outline expectations for conduct of the Faculty community, will be presented in the fall to the UBC Senate for approval. The White Coat Ceremony has been redesigned to be more meaningful to entry-to-practice students by moving the portions of the program focused on PharmD, MSc, and PhD students to other venues, reducing the social element of the event, and holding the event somewhat later in the term to allow for the delivery of more (and revised) curricular content related to professionalism and professional identity prior to the ceremony. To emulate the social aspect of previous years’ White Coat Ceremonies, a new “Faculty Family Welcome” event will be introduced in September 2013, which will be open to all students and to which first year students may bring two family members as guests. Entry-to-Practice Program Advisory Committee (E2P-PAC) Under the leadership of the Co-Chairs, Drs. Patricia Gerber and Kathleen MacLeod, the E2P-PAC continues its work of refining the B.Sc.(Pharm.) program in ways that align with emerging plans for the entry-to-practice PharmD program. The main focus of the committee this past year has been the development of a gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) module, for possible implementation in Year 1 of the program in 2013/14. New Electives The Faculty continues to enhance its elective course offerings in the B.Sc.(Pharm.) program, with new offerings in 2012/13 including: • Pharmaceutical Care in Aboriginal Health: This course was developed and is being taught by Mr. Larry Leung and Mr. Jason Min, alumni of our B.Sc.(Pharm.) and Community Residency programs who are providing clinical pharmacy services in several remote, northern coastal Aboriginal communities. Consistent with the Guiding Principles of the UBC Aboriginal Strategic Plan and the Faculty’s Strategic Plan, the course is sensitive to relevant administrative, health, and social needs of Aboriginal communities; provides opportunities to develop community relations with Aboriginal organizations, health care practitioners, and patients; and expands students’ understanding of cultural diversity, global health, and underserved populations. A primary goal of the course is to generate practice innovations with the potential to support improved patient outcomes in Aboriginal populations. The course was offered in each semester of 2012/13 and will be offered again in 2013/14. • Elective in Course Design: This directed study course offered by Ms. Marion Pearson provided students with the opportunity to develop a proposal for a new elective course in an area of personal interest. Students conducted an environmental scan, designed and administered a needs analysis survey to determine the level of interest in the student body for the proposed elective, and developed a syllabus, lesson plans, and assessment activities for the proposed elective. One of these proposals has already come to fruition with a 2013/14 offering of a new elective in nephropharmacotherapy. Meet the “Sims” Purchased through one-time funding for equipment in the new building, the Faculty now has several human patient simulators that are being used to teach physical assessment skills, such as measuring heart rate and blood pressure. Some of the simulators are sophisticated enough to produce lung sounds typical of asthma and pneumonia, providing students with an opportunity to learn how to conduct a pulmonary assessment of patients with these conditions. Students are also learning good “bedside manner” through interaction with the simulators.

Academic Report Medication Reconciliation Interprofessional Event On January 16, 2013, over 360 pharmacy and medical students convened in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Building to participate in an interprofessional medication reconciliation learning activity. This new event was organized by Drs. Judith Soon and Arun Verma, in collaboration with colleagues from the Faculty of Medicine, College of Health Disciplines, and Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services. Students worked in small groups on patient cases, supervised by medication reconciliation experts from four different provincial Health Authorities. This event made maximum use of the building’s teaching spaces, from lecture theaters to seminar rooms, and videoconferencing capability, which allowed over 60 students to participate remotely from the University of Victoria and the University of Northern British Columbia.

Practice Innovation Report

Submitted by Dr. Peter J. Zed, Associate Professor and Associate Dean, Practice Innovation Initiatives and Activities The Initiative for Sustainable Health Care The recruitment for the Professorship in Sustainable Health Care was initiated in the summer of 2013, and as a result of a rigorous selection process led by a Search Committee with Dr. Larry Lynd as Chair, four qualified candidates were invited for interviews. However, despite the best efforts of all involved, the Faculty was unable to appoint a candidate for this position. As a result, a decision was made to continue with the search process and the job advertisement for the position was reposted and once again disseminated widely in the summer of 2013. The Initiative for Medication Adherence Upon completion of the recruitment efforts led by a Search Committee with Dr. Peter Zed as Chair, Dr. Mary De Vera was selected and accepted the position of Professorship in Adherence at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2013. The official launch for the initiative jointly hosted by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and AbbVie Corporation took place on June 20, 2013 where Dr. Mary De Vera was introduced and delivered a seminar on “Addressing the Epidemic of Medication Non-Adherence.” Dr. De Vera’s primary mandate in this role will be to develop methodologies that will assist pharmacists in ensuring adherence and optimizing patient health outcomes. She is the recipient of a Young Investigators Operating Grant from The Arthritis Society in August 2013 ($275,419 total for 3 years) and a Network Scholar Award in July 2013 ($60,000/year for 2 years). Initiative for Advancing Institutional Pharmacy Experiential Learning in BC (AGILE Project) With the appointment of Dr. Michael Legal as Project Lead in November 2012, the Faculty embarked on a new exciting initiative to advance experiential learning in institutional pharmacy practice (AGILE project). The Phase 1 (Nov-Dec 2012) of this project included the development of website, environmental scan of site/rotation inventory, literature search/ review, and gathering of information on national/international experiences. The Phase 2 (Jan-May 2013) was dedicated to engaging with Health Authorities all across BC and other stakeholders through various methods such as focus groups, in-depth discussions, one-on-one interviews, website discussions to capture their feedback on challenges and ideas relating to experiential education. In addition, an electronic survey for preceptors was developed and deployed to nearly 800 health authority pharmacists to explore their attitudes towards the perceived benefits and barriers to precepting, alternative precepting models, and solutions to barriers. A separate survey was conducted on the same issues to obtain feedback from the health authority leadership. The Phase 3 (June-August) has been focused on analyzing feedback collected from multiple engagement methods to identify themes for challenges and solutions related to experiential education and drafting initial recommendations. The AGILE project has been in its final phase since August 2013 and the preliminary recommendations have been drafted and are in the process of being refined based on stakeholder feedback. The final project report is scheduled to be completed by early November and presented to the Faculty soon after that. As of April 2013, this project has been supported by students through SSRP and the TLEF Grant ($96,550) which was awarded to a proposal entitled Enhancing Student Learning and Expanding Institutional Experiential Clerkship Opportunities across UBC’s Pharmacy programs” with Dr. Peter Loewen as Principal Investigator. Partner Appointments One of the main goals of the Practice Innovation portfolio within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences is to accelerate knowledge translation to practice and develop teaching and clinical collaborations to advance knowledge, health outcomes and the profession of Pharmacy. To enable this vision, Partner Appointments were developed in collaboration with partner institutions such as BC Health Authorities to support and recruit individuals with expertise in clinical practice, education, and research. With the approval and support from the Provost in November 2012, the Policy on Partner Track Faculty Appointments was developed and subsequently reviewed by the decanal leadership and the members of our Faculty, Directors of the BC Health Authorities, and Faculty Relations at UBC. The final discussion on Partner Track Faculty Appointments was held at the Faculty Advisory Committee meeting in March 2013 at which Dean pro tem Wayne Riggs approved proceeding with the hiring for these positions. The job advertisements for the first two Partner Appointments with Interior Health and Northern health Authorities were developed and finalized in June 2013 and the recruitment process commenced in the summer of 2013. Practice Innovation Report Pharmacists Clinic Elevate Consulting Inc. was selected through a RFP process in October 2012 to develop a comprehensive Business Case Report for the Pharmacists Clinic that includes an environmental scan, market analysis and business model Subsequently, an Advisory Group chaired by Drs. Alan Low and Peter Zed was formed in November 2012 to work with Elevate Consulting and together with feedback from other stakeholders produced a comprehensive draft of the Business Case Report in April 2013. Following a rigorous search and selection process led by a Search Committee with Dr. Mary Ensom as Chair, Ms. Barbara Gobis was appointed as Director, Pharmacists Clinic. Since starting her role in April 2013, Barbara has been spearheading the development and implementation work required to commence patient care services at the Clinic before the end of 2013. To provide advice and guidance to the Director during this phase and to complete the 5 –Year Business Plan based on the report produced by Elevate Consulting, the Pharmacists Clinic Implementation Advisory was formed in May 2013. The primary focus of discussions of this Advisory Group have included development of service models, access to patients, clinical approach, teaching approach, communication and marketing, program management and quality assurance, plans for research, etc. In addition, an Education Sub-Group was struck in August 2013 to provide recommendations to the Advisory Group on opportunities within the existing academic programs that are suitable for the Clinic to be included as an experiential education site. Other developmental areas of work have been proceeding in a timely manner with IT set-up, procurement of furniture, equipment and supplies, licensure, risk management, interprofessional collaboration and establishing sources of patients, finances and other logistics. In consultation with the College of Pharmacists of BC, the Pharmacists Clinic was relicensed as community pharmacy in August 2013. As of July 2013, the Pharmacists Clinic acquired the services of pharmacists Mr. Larry Leung and Mr. Jason Min on a contract basis and transitioned their patient care services to be delivered under the Pharmacists Clinic. The positions for two pharmacists and clinic receptionist have been posted as of August 2013. Interprofessional Medical Home Innovation Lab (MHIL) The Interprofessional MHIL working group was formed in the fall of 2012 with a mandate to develop a business plan for an accessible, innovate, and sustainable Interprofessional Medical Home Innovation Laboratory that integrates innovate clinical education with best practice in primary care service delivery. The care model proposed in the business case included pharmacist as a core member of the medical team alongside physician and nurse. The business case proposal was submitted to the BC Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Advanced Education, Innovation and Technology in March 2013 but was unfortunately not approved. However, with the continued interest and commitment by Fraser Health, there have been follow up meetings to discuss next steps which included moving forward with a scaled down project. Student-Administered Injections and UBC Flu Clinics The request for amendment to College of Pharmacists of BC bylaws was facilitated by the Office of Associate Dean, Practice Innovation to allow administration of injections by student pharmacists under supervision of licensed pharmacists or other regulated health professionals. This bylaw amendment was approved on October 29, 2012. As a result, our 4th year students were able to participate in the interprofessional Influenza Immunization Program at UBC in November 2012 through which a total of 3120 faculty, staff and students were immunized. Drs. Kathy Seto and Fawziah Lalji were instrumental in representing our Faculty in this important initiative.

Post-Graduate Doctor of Pharmacy Program (PharmD) Report Submitted by Dr. Peter Loewen, Assistant Professor and Director, Doctor of Pharmacy Programs

The Post-Graduate Doctor of Pharmacy Program has enjoyed another year of success. Dr. Patricia Gerber continues to provide outstanding coordination in her role as Clinical Coordinator for the program, and the program is well supported by administrative assistance from Julie Sureweere. The eight 2013 graduates of the PharmD program bring the total number of graduates to 143 since its inception in 1991. The most recent graduates have already assumed important patient care, educator, and advanced trainee roles across Canada, the US, and internationally. In 2013, the PharmD program recognized student excellence by awarding The Peter Jewesson Graduate Scholarship in Pharmacy and the The Merck Frosst Pharmacy Doctoral Prize to Dr. Simon Tremblay, and by giving the CSHP BC Branch PharmD Award to Anthony Amadio. We recognized teaching excellence by conferring our Teaching Awards upon Drs. Larry Lynd and Richard Slavik. Drs. Debbie Thompson and Emily Black were honoured with our Preceptor Awards. The pool of qualified applicants has remained healthy, and the Class of 2015 was attracted from across Canada. We invite you to see who all 16 of our students are at http://www.pharmacy.ubc.ca/programs/degree-programs/PharmD/alumni. Some highlights of the 2012-13 program cycle include: • The program once again received a full accreditation award from CCAPP. • Dr. Gerber completed the UBC Certificate Program in the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning and Dr. Loewen completed the UBC Academic Leadership Development Program. • Our students, in conjunction with our affiliated faculty, published several scholarly articles. • The program implemented a comprehensive electronic academic program management, evaluation and scheduling softward system intended to streamline these processes for students and faculty. • We initiated, with the invaluable support of Dr. Kathy Seto, an immunization training program for PharmD students. The PharmD program continues to benefit from outstanding teaching contributions by clinicians, researchers, and professional leaders from the faculty, health authorities, primary care practice, and government. Our Class of 2014 will complete 96 rotations in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia, California, Michigan, Quebec, and Texas. We are grateful to the incredible group of clinicians, researchers, and leaders who offer and precept rotations for our students. For 2013-14, the program continues to work to the faculty’s Strategic Plan, which emphasizes development of ambulatory care and other outpatient clerkship experiences for our students. Furthermore, as our Entry-To-Practice PharmD program works its way through the stages of development and approval, we are in the process of re-branding the program as the “UBC Post-Graduate PharmD Program” for clarity. The Post-Graduate PharmD program will also continue to serve as an inspiration and source of expertise to our Flexible PharmD program currently being developed. In Fall 2013, the program will once again co-deliver a preceptor development workshop with the BC Pharmacy Practice Residency Programs which is expected to attract preceptors from around B.C.

Office of Experiential Education (OEE) Report

Submitted by Dr. Angela Kim-Sing, Director, Office of Experiential Education (OEE) The Office of Experiential Education oversees 1000 student placements per year for the entry to practice program and Structured Practical Training - International Pharmacy Graduate (SPT- IPG) and Structured Practical Training- Regulated Technicians (SPT-Technicians). The Office is staffed with 3.6 FTE Faculty and 1.0 FTE Program Administration. An additional 1.0 FTE Program Administration is paid from a College of Pharmacists of British Columbia honorarium to administer the SPT programs. Our two ongoing priorities are to (1) engage our clinical faculty/practice educators in the field and (2) build capacity for student placement. These two priorities are of crucial importance given the increase in Experiential Education from 20 to 46 weeks in the proposed Entry to Practice (E2P) PharmD program. To provide oversight to the expansion of the experiential program, A Preceptor Development Task Force was established in January 2013 and an Experiential Education Working Group of the E2P PharmD was formed in April 2013. Both groups have representation from community and institutional practitioners, faculty, staff and students. In parallel the AGILE Steering Committee was established to specifically address placement capacity at institutional sites. Preceptor development continues to be a priority moving forward. For the second year in a row the OEE has delivered three face-to-face preceptor development workshops. To date the full day workshops are offered as complimentary workshops with CE credits. To supplement preceptor resources, OEE produced the Teaching Skills for Pharmacy Practice Educators booklet (http://issuu.com/ubcpharmsci/docs/oee_preceptor_handbook_09-2013_ubcp) and the Practice Educator Guide to Student Assessment. (http://cpd.pharmacy.ubc.ca/content/clerkship-forms). We continue to expand the practice educator website to provide ongoing support and resources; and hope to launch our online preceptor development modules in the Fall. In our efforts to recognize our practice educators, OEE made available over 500 FOPS plaques to be displayed in pharmacies, which acknowledge the receiving agency as an affiliated UBC teaching site. Over 900 practice educator lapel pins to our pharmacists have been distributed, and the Practice Educator Award for each of the clerkships was reinstated in 2013. A practice educator video to thank our preceptors was filmed over the summer, and community site visitations will continue in the Fall. Over the summer the AGILE Project group completed a Needs Assessment Survey of institutional practitioners and in September a similar needs assessment survey to community practitioners was deployed. Building capacity continues to be a challenge particularly in the institutional setting. We have two projects underway that we hope will address some of the institutional challenges: • In collaboration with Marion Pearson (PI), Angela Kim-Sing, Paulo Tchen (CI) received a UBC TLEF Grant of $59, 500 to explore “Bridging the Gap from the Classroom to the Institutional Practice Site – A Transition Module for Pharmacy Students.” $59,500. • In collaboration with Peter Loewen (PI), Katrina Assen, Nicole Bruchet, Pamela Fu, Patricia Gerber, Curtis Harder, Angela Kim-Sing, Ernest Law, Michael Legal, Sally Man, Sam Nolan, Aleisha Thornhill, Janice Yeung, Peter Zed - a UBC TLEF Grant was received to explore “Enhancing Student Learning and Expanding Institutional Experiential Clerkship Opportunities Across UBC’s Pharmacy Programs.” $96,000 In other scholarship endeavors – we had one SSRP (Summer Student Research Program) student and employed two pharmacy students as research assistants over the summer. The SSRP project was titled: Analyzing the Office of Experiential Education’s Preceptor/Site Data and Identifying Strategies for the Recruitment, Training, Support and Retention of Preceptors and Practice Sites. As Chair of PEP-Canada, Angela Kim-Sing in collaboration with Andrea Cameron, Ann Thompson, Harriet Davies and Harold Lapotka, have submitted a proposal to BluePrint for funding consideration “To Enhance Experiential Education in Hospitals and Primary Care”. OEE continues to offer the Community Service Learning pharmacy elective. This year in collaboration with the College of Health Disciplines, interprofessional service learning experiences were identified for pharmacy students.

Continuing Pharmacy Professional Development (CPPD) Report Submitted by Dr. Glenda MacDonald, Director, Continuing Pharmacy Professional Development (CPPD)

This has been another busy year for UBC-CPPD, with continuing professional development now mandatory for British Columbia pharmacy professionals. Our team includes Dr. Glenda MacDonald, Director; Ms. Sheryl Peterson, Associate Director; Ms. Sandi Hutty, Coordinator Canadian Pharmacy Practice Programme; Ms. Sheila Kwan, Administrative Manager; Ms. Virginia Kwong, Coordinator Pharmacy Technician Bridging Program; Ms. Ying Gu, Bridging Program Assistant and Ms. Louise Healy, Finance and Registration Clerk. We also appreciate the efforts of our hard working Work-Study students, Jennifer, Jenny and Youna. Pharmacy Technician Bridging Program UBC-CPPD continues to be the primary source of delivery of the Pharmacy Technician Bridging Program (PTBP) in British Columbia, a requirement for those pharmacy assistants currently in practice who wish to become regulated Pharmacy Technicians. The four modules (Pharmacology, Management of Drug Distribution, Product Preparation and Professional Practice) are offered in both in-class and online formats throughout the province. Three of the four modules may be challenged through a Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) exam, with one exam is offered monthly by CPPD. In 2012 the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) revised all program content to facilitate delivery of a consistent national program. We continue to work closely with the College of Pharmacists of BC and NAPRA in the delivery of the National Bridging Program curriculum. Since July 2010, we have had 3490 registrations for our offerings of online or in-class PTBP courses. An additional 1214 registrants have participated in PLAR exams, which are held in multiple locations around the province. To date 1293 individuals have participated in our PTBP program. This fall we have 305 registrants in 13 classes underway. As there is limited time (until the end of 2015) for BC pharmacy assistants to pursue regulation through the bridging program, we expect to be busy over the next two terms. Canadian Pharmacy Practice Programme Our Canadian Pharmacy Practice Programme (CP3) continues to grow. CP3 is designed to prepare International Pharmacy Graduates (IPG’s) for practice in Canada, help Canadian-trained pharmacists re-enter practice after an extended absence, and provide core competencies for practising pharmacists. A 12-week classroom component is followed by a 12 ½ -week clinical practicum. The final module is preparation for the national pharmacy licensing exams. The program is currently offered twice annually, with limited enrolment; 34 full time students completed the program this past year. The program is in its ninth year of operation and, to date, 215 students have completed the full program and 70 students have taken individual modules. Our graduates have an 87% success rate in licensure exams. We are also pleased to note that several CP3 alumni are supporting the program in an honourary lecturer capacity for both the Lab and role play sessions. Still others take an active role as preceptors. Live conferences/videoconferences/seminars Six hundred and seventeen pharmacy professionals participated in 10 live programs this year. The first of our annual “Update” conferences to be held in the new Pharmaceutical Sciences building was attended by over 200 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, and included a successful hands-on Physical Assessment workshop. The spring and fall Victoria Lecture Series brought current practice information to over 100 Vancouver Island participants. We continue to collaborate with our Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences colleagues in the Office of Experiential Education, delivering face-to-face preceptor development workshops. We collaborated with the faculty’s Development Office and the UBC Pharmacy Alumni group to deliver the Alumni and Community Open House featuring the inaugural “Bench to Bedside” series partnering faculty researchers with clinicians. Another successful collaboration with the Office of Research Services increased pharmacist participation in the Celebrate Research week program “Sex & Drugs & Reproductive Health”. We would like to acknowledge the contributions of our Regional Coordinator Network of pharmacists throughout the province who assist with regional programming. Development and Alumni Engagement (DAE) Report

Submitted by June Chow, Associate Director, Development & Alumni Engagement (DAE) Much of our DAE office’s activity for 2012/2013 was shaped around the opening ceremony for the new building— on September 18, 2012—and its celebration amongst donors and alumni. A number of room namings and general building support were finalized in Q1 in time for the building opening, as well as two more donors to the Initiative for Sustainable Healthcare and its Story of Medicines exhibit. The year’s fundraising focus was very much on donor stewardship and delivering on promised donor recognition—in the form of donor signage for room namings, and through the creation of two donor sculptures in the building’s public atrium, separately recognizing Campaign support and Lifetime support of the Faculty. These donor sculptures are components of The Story of Medicines exhibit, and our office also contributed to its other content, including the Alumni Yearbook, a digital database of the Faculty’s alumni since its first graduating class in 1949; and the Origins & Evolution station charting the origins and evolutions of medicines, as well as those of the pharmacy profession in B.C. and at the Faculty. The Story of Medicines exhibit is the tangible public outreach component of the donor-funded Initiative for Sustainable Healthcare. A private reception was organized for representatives of the Initiatives’ donors immediately preceding the opening ceremony so that they could get the first and private viewing of The Story of Medicines. The opening ceremony also offered the building’s major donors (i.e. those who had named spaces) exclusive, student-led tours. We were fortunate to have a one-year contract Development Associate offered to us by the Central Development office starting in August 2012, to support all the events surrounding the building opening. We were also able to hire the Faculty’s first-ever, full-time dedicated Alumni Relations Manager for the systematic engagement of alumni who started in October 2012. These extra resources meant our office could organize and host an additional Alumni & Community Open House for the new building on the weekend following the invitation-only opening ceremony. This was a significant gesture to start reaching out to alumni and inviting them in and back to their Faculty. Alumni Engagement continued through 4 class reunions in Fall 2012 (Class of 1972, 1982, 1987, and 1992), all of which contained a building tour component. A targeted, monthly Alumni E-Newsletter was launched in February 2013, building upon the Communications excellence of the Faculty. We also organized and hosted an Alumni event in Victoria in February 2013 to present and hear feedback on the proposed changes to the entry-to-practice degree program. This event was also the final formal commitment with our DAE office of Dr. Robert Sindelar as Dean, and we finished the fiscal year under a Dean pro tem. The year’s Alumni Engagement goal of 1,000 engaged alumni was exceeded at 1,154, representing almost 21% of our total alumni base. We raised a total of $2,242,080 in the 2013FY, with a little over a quarter of this (26%) in the form of donations to the building. We also started to see the widening of our fundraising priorities to include student awards, through the establishment of two new awards for entry-to-practice students. As of the end of the fiscal year, our total raised towards UBC’s Start An Evolution campaign came to just shy of $14-million, representing 66.6% towards our campaign goal of $21-million and right on par with the overall campaign progress at the University.
