Welcome
om swastiyastu
selamat datang
Welcome
I am thrilled that The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is celebrating its 20th Anniversary, marking two decades of literary excellence, cultural enrichment, and global recognition. What began as a humble gathering of wordsmiths and book enthusiasts has blossomed into a worldrenowned event that has undeniably put Ubud on the map as a leading global literary and arts center.
Selamat atas Ubud Writers & Readers Festival ke-20!
Swasti Prapta, Bapak/Ibu/Saudara pada perhelatan Ubud Writers & Readers Festival ke 20.
Greetings, I am delighted to welcome you to the captivating realm of the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival as it celebrates its 20th Anniversary.
As I reflect upon the essence of the Festival, it becomes clear that it is not merely an event celebrating literature but a profound intersection of ideas, creativity, and the power of storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of Balinese and Indonesian culture, this festival weaves together local and international voices to create a harmonious symphony of literature and ideas. The Festival’s theme, ‘Atita, Wartamana, Anagata: Past, Present, Future,’ explores the intricacies of our past, weaving them with the realities of our present and envisioning a future rooted in harmony and sustainability.
Over the years, the Festival has transcended borders, bringing together authors, poets, journalists, and readers from every corner of the globe. It has evolved into an eclectic landscape of cultures and languages, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and intellectual exchange where writers have shared their narratives, ideas, and visions, inspiring one another and the audience alike. The Festival's profound impact extends beyond the realm of literature. It has enriched the Ubud community, fostering creativity, stimulating tourism, and supporting local businesses. Ubud now stands as a symbol of literary excellence, drawing bibliophiles and adventurers from far and wide to its lush landscapes. As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we recognize the Festival’s enduring legacy as a catalyst for understanding, unity, and artistic exploration. The Festival's ability to unite hearts and minds through the power of words is a testament to the enduring value of literature and its capacity to transform lives. We would like to say a huge thanks to all those who have supported us on this extraordinary journey, especially to our sponsors, volunteers, dedicated staff and the people of Ubud. I also want to thank my family who have been alongside me every step of the way. Here's to another two decades of inspiration, storytelling, and the everexpanding legacy of the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival.

The Festival serves as a platform for voices that often go unheard, providing a space for marginalized communities, indigenous people, and women to share their narratives and challenge dominant narratives. In these serene surroundings, one can witness the transformative power that stories hold – unraveling the complexities of the human experience, sparking conversations that lead to change, and igniting a collective purpose to protect our planet and all its inhabitants. So, dear fellow lover of literature and ideas, I invite you to immerse yourself in the treasures that await you at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival. Let us come together to celebrate the written word, forge new connections, and inspire one another as we embark on this transformative journey of imagination and discovery. With love and gratitude,

20TH ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL
support Our festival
From humble beginnings in 2004, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival has evolved into a global flagship literary event. Every year, bibliophiles from all walks of life descend on Ubud for several days of learning and laughter – to discuss big ideas, shared passions, and the latest in literature. The Festival has invited some of the greatest writers and thinkers from Indonesia and beyond to delight and often challenge crowds in all kinds of formats. They have crossed boundaries, leapt over them, and broken through them.
artwork The Festival's 2023 artwork was created by Goenawan Mohamad collaborated with the Devto Printmaking Institute and received assistance from a young graphic designer, Adinda Hapsari.
This year, the Festival celebrates 20 incredible years, embodied by the theme 'Atita, Wartamana, Anagata: Past, Present, Future.' The concept evokes a metaphysical representation of ‘being’ that goes beyond the life of a single individual. It places importance on balance and harmony that weaves a delicate thread tying humanity together across time and space. It transcends individualism for our mutual sustenance from one generation to the next. The Festival will personify this theme and showcase emerging and established writers, artists, intellectuals, cultural scholars, and speakers who will share their vision of history, current affairs, and the future of our world.
Your support is essential and helps us to connect communities through books, stories, and ideas.

SUPPORT OUR FUNDRAISER
From its beginning, the Festival has always been known as a unique event – one characterized by diversity, intimacy, honesty, and a distinctive culture that unites the sharpest minds from Indonesia and the world to celebrate the power of storytelling. However, to continue bringing back the Festival every year and improving it, we need your help, which is why we are excited to introduce our Friends of the Festival program.
Support the future of Indonesian storytelling by empowering young Indonesians to share their narratives globally. As an Emerging Writing Patron, you nurture the voices of tomorrow.
For two decades, our Festival has united readers and writers in Bali's cultural heartland, fostering magical moments amidst the tropical jungle. It's a place where stories are shared, memories created, and curiosity thrives. As a not-for-profit organization, we rely on generous partners and donors to ensure each year's success.
Becoming a Friend of the Festival donor not only earns you acknowledgement but also grants exclusive benefits, including a 25% Festival Pass discount, author meet-and-greets, partner discounts, reserved seating, and a Festival gift bag. Help us write our next chapter and be part of our special community that supports our exciting and ambitious program and enjoys exclusive benefits, as well as camaraderie with like-minded people.
Each year, we scour Indonesia for emerging talent, reviewing submissions from novelists, poets, and playwrights across the archipelago, from bustling cities to remote villages. Our program spotlights often overlooked talented Indonesian writers. The selected writers launch their work at the annual Festival. The bilingual Anthology provides them with a chance to translate their work into English, opening international doors. This far-reaching literary initiative relies on patron support, covering travel and living expenses for these emerging talents at the Festival. Help these gifted writers share their stories with the world. In return, you'll receive an invitation for a personal meeting and acknowledgment in the annual Anthology.
Join us in writing the next chapter of our journey by contributing to our Anniversary Festival Fund. Your support will help us bring beloved authors to the festival, connect visiting writers with local schools, nurture emerging talent, and other initiatives that we are busily planning and hope to unveil soon. Your contribution, regardless of the amount, makes a meaningful impact in sustaining this literary celebration. Thank you for being part of our story.
It's a time for reflecting on the festival's history, celebrating 20 years, and looking toward its future.
