I have been writing and re-writing this editor’s note for the past few days because well, how can I adequately capture how dramatically our lives have been upended in just a few weeks? How disappointing it is to not have a proper last day of class and graduation ceremony after years of studying? How scary it is to graduate into an impending financial crisis? And for many, how deeply distressing it is to have to figure out money for rent and food immediately after losing their job? But amidst all this existential dread, it has been inspiring to see the UBC community members extend kindness and support each other through the pandemic and its continuous fallouts.
It has been equally encouraging to watch our editors, staff and contributors not just diligently keep track of UBC and BC’s ongoing pandemic responses, but also report on how COVID-19 is directly affecting our campus community. While we are not perfect, I hope this shows that we care and we try — especially as local news matters now more than ever. Yet, all of this is just coverage from the past few weeks. To properly recap this wild year, we have filled these 16 pages with the year’s biggest, funniest and most touching stories — all of which could not have been done without the work, love and care of our tireless contributors. So thank you for everything and take care, Alex Nguyen

Dr. Sheryl Lightfoot, alongside First Nations House of Learning Director Dr. Margaret Moss, fills the role of UBC’s senior advisor to the president on Indigenous affairs. Since 2018, her work has included creating a number of Indigenous-focused plans for the university, such as the Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan as well as the Indigenous Strategic Action Plan. Alongside Moss, Lightfoot’s integral work to advance reconciliation at UBC continues today. JACK BAILEY
International relations professor, environmental politics specialist and Atlantic Canadian, Dr. Peter Dauvergne has experienced and examined the climate crisis in many different ways — but he doesn’t let it slow him down. Intent on informing his students of the dangers of the climate crisis as well as eco-anxiety, Dauvergne believes in the power of positivity: “I’m a diehard optimist.”

As more mental health resources establish themselves on campus, Project Aurora is shining a light to make them all a bit more accessible. A website that consolidates all the on-campus mental health resources available into an online interface, Campus Lightbox allows students to filter through their options and find the resources that best fit their needs.

There’s a long history behind Canada’s first Queer audience-focused library, but nowadays it can be found on the Nest’s second floor. It is currently in the process of updating the literature classification system with the goal of treating different communities equally. This reorganization has expanded the traditional library classification system to include more identities within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
The only Black woman in the Allard School of Law’s faculty, Sara Ghebremusse understands how unique her position is and how much her presence matters. Through work with the Equity and Inclusion Office and the Lind Initiative’s “Thinking While Black” series, Ghebremusse has proven to be determined to be a voice for the Black community at UBC.

CLUB PROFILES: THE MOST CREATIVE CLUBS ON CAMPUS I remember pitching this idea to the blog editor when I first started writing for The Ubyssey. I started writing for blog because I wanted to write but I was too afraid of doing interviews. Since writing this article I’ve gotten over that fear and done many interviews over the past two years. I’ve also learned so much from everyone I’ve had the chance to talk to. It’s not that scary if you just think about it as a conversation!

ASK PAWAN: GETTING BACK INTO THE SWING OF THINGS AFTER THE HOLIDAYS In December, I applied to be a columnist for some newspaper. In January, I wrote my first article for that paper, talking about finding your groove after winter break. Two years later, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I’ve found my groove. PATRICK GILLIN

THERAPY DOGS WORK, BUT NOT HOW YOU’D EXPECT THEM TO When I wrote my first article about therapy dogs I never imagined I would have to think about how to cover a pandemic. That definitely wasn’t in the brochure. I couldn’t have been more happy with the community I found at The Ubyssey and the experiences it’s given me, though and I’ll always carry those memories.
THOMAS O’DONNELL
FRITES AU BC FERRIES I think this still encapsulates my personalilty well, as all I do is talk about BC Ferries. One of the reasons I wrote this was because I saw that if you wrote for The Ubyssey magazine you could get free tickets to a play. I really wanted to take this guy out on a date to that play, so I thought I would shoot my ‘jouralistic’ shot. I have literally no idea what that guy is up to now. It’s crazy to think of how my life has changed completely for the better in joining The Ubyssey. COURTESY TWISTED SISTER

HEAD TO MOA TOMORROW NIGHT FOR THE THIRD ANNUAL ARTS AND CULTURE NIGHT I have no idea which one was my first illustration. I lost track a long time ago of how many different things I’ve done for this paper, but after a lot of searching, I did find my first article. To this day I’ve only written exactly five things for The Ubyssey. My first was not my best.

LOCAL SKATERS SHRED AND GRIND AT THE THIRD ANNUAL UBC SKATE COMPETITION I’m getting too old for this shit. I remember trying to take pics on my cell phone at this contest. Four years and way too many camera purchases later, photography has grown into way more than just a hobby.
T-BIRDS TRAMPLE THOMPSON RIVERS IN PRE-SEASON MATCH UP I started off as a sports writer and photographer for the men’s volleyball team. Although my grammar skills and writing technique were bad in the first place, but I was able to conduct my first post-game interview and take journalistic pictures on the court. Being able to cover a sports event encouraged me to become more engaged with student journalism and led me to be an ethusiast in photojournalism.

Men’s hockey
Men’s hockey. The team shocked everyone when they took out Alberta in the Canada West semi-finals to book a spot at nationals for the first time in 42 years. When Gabe Olivares (QB, football) took over for the struggling Tommy Yanchuk, it changed the course of the team’s performance. Olivares backstopped the team to huge season-ending wins over Regina and Saskatchewan, so he’s definitely one to keep an eye on for next year.

Men’s soccer had a stellar Canada West season but fell all too quickly at U Sports Nationals in Montreal
Men’s and women’s hockey shocking everyone by beating their top-ranked opponents in the playoffs. More specifically when two consecutive shots hit all three posts behind Rylan Toth as the Thunderbirds hung on for dear life in the Canada West men’s quarterfinal against Alberta.

Katelyn Filewich quietly had one of the best seasons in U Sports women’s basketball, winning Canada West player of the year for her efforts

I thought women’s hockey would have accomplished more since they had a great start
Not that I would call it a bad season for women’s hockey overall, but it was hard to understand their scoring issues and the talents on their roster should have made them a contender throughout the year
Men’s hockey had the biggest upset, but women’s rugby winning the Canada West and making their first ever trip to nationals deserves some love
Women’s soccer winning U Sports
DIANA HONG
Men’s football upset of Saskatchewan. For a young team that struggled to finish games, a comeback win against one of the better teams in the Canada West was arguably the biggest upset of the year
