crowdsourcing preservation
assignment 01 - sept 22 isabelle jackson arch 680.07
For a variety of reasons, from cultural to environmental, more and more heritage buildings are being restored, renovated, and renewed. Buildings that were once written off or left to decay are now the focus of possible design interventions and community revitalizations. Who gets to make these decisions? And why? Histroric preservation should always recognize and mediate shortfalls of the inclusivity of spaces and cultural sensitivity. Broadening this conversation and scope of actors involved to include all members of the public, and not just the immediate stakeholders will allow for this to happen. 1

Inspired by precedents where there is a collision between analogue and digital technologies that create interactive, increasingly immersive environments. More involvement means more ownership and personal expression over the final result.

Using a combination of content creation software on a tablet and projection mapping technology, the public will be able to come up with their own designs and subsequent ideation of what they imagine the built environment around them to look like. They will choose from preloaded elements (including drawing tools for complete control) and then they will get to see what their design looks like, in real time, in a completely immersive envionment- full size, right infront of them. The possibilities are endless, from simple facade colour or material changes, to watching nature take over, to a complete removal of a portion of the building. 10
user input on ipad-like device. user decides what to project from menu of tools, colours, patterns, photos, videos, etc.
design is then put onto the building using projection mapping technology

This location was chosen to represent a historic building that can be considered the “blank canvas” for user engagement, however, this idea is meant to be able to be replicated anywhere.
Version 01
“Technology mirrors our desires; interactive technologies, in particular, reflect our desire to feel engaged.”
Version 02
Surrendering our subjectivity for ‘objectivized’ viewpoints, we are given, in return, a representation of responsibility, a virtual enfranisement. Each participant in an interaction recieves the sensation of responsibility, each has the ability to respond.”
