SYNTHESIZING ECOLOGIES KUNSTHALLE
Concept Statement For architecture to act as an engine to disseminate culture, it needs to re-engage the everyday by considering connection, movement, and diversity. The concept uses lightness, transparencies, circulation, and flexibility to define the unifying form of the Kunsthalle that invites in, and radiates out, the flow of the city, art, and culture through a radically permeable threshold. By encouraging these flows, the Kunsthalle disseminates culture by creating opportunities for public interaction - with the art, with their city, and with each other. Parti Description The shell represents a permeable threshold - operating and allowing for both the of city, art, and culture into space, but also allowing art to emanate out. The volumes act as a mirco-city. Multiple forms and scales exist with their own unique relationships, all encompassed in a unifying envelope - the same way the City of Calgary holds within it social, economic, political, and cultural diversity. Spaces and ideas can puncture the envelope, emphasizing interior-exterior connections. Similarly, interior volumes crash into each other, developing relationships inside the space. Strong potential for city-art-public engagement exist in the blurred threshold between outside, shell, and inside volumes.

our guiding concept statements focus on the idea of an art hub that emphasizes cohabitation - one that also evolves and adapts with the art and the people that interact with it, challenging the traditional art gallery typology. By creating a concept that promotes permeation of program into the urban fabric, we’re able to make art more accessible to all.

SYNTHESIZING ECOLOGIES Socially | Equitable | Landscape
How can we create a democratically equitable landscape? Deconstructing the art gallery to create a series of thresholds that discern one space from another allows each user to curate their own path. A place where procession is no longer forced on the user, but a gesture of choice for the individual. Art is brought out and people are brought in as an exchange to animate the landscape. Our site extends north from 8th - 7th avenue in between Teatro Ristorante and Olympic Plaza. Our analysis of the area revealed this site was one of few public greenspaces in the area. So, although we were tasked to design a building on this land, we dedicated the semester to exploring ways in which we could make our building sit light on the land and be read as secondary to the landscape.

SYNTHESIZING ECOLOGIES Art in the City, City in the Art

SYNTHESIZING ECOLOGIES Art in the City, City in the Art This project is founded on the critical intersection between the city as the inspiration for art making and art as the distillation of the world around us. The proposal aims to create a threshold for people to pause, reflect and ponder while experiencing art and city in an alternating canvas. The Kunsthalle can act as center for art, an incubator for invention, and a podium for public interaction, whilst being catalysts for positive changes within the city. It is composed of two spaces - one for art display and adjacent programs, the other a public forum - that come together in a choreographed experience involving art and the city, gradually engaging in multiple movements and providing people with a space to learn, inspire and innovate.
