La Jolla residence designed by Zaha Hadid is located in San Diego California. The site covers about 1200m2. Studying this precedent, one can see how despite designing a controversial sculpture to most, every line drawn is intentional. Zaha integrates strong dynamic forms, has her own personal expression systems and a strong yearning to connect to nature.

The Koshino House, designed by Tadao Ando, finished construction in 1984. It is situated in Ahiya, Japan, which is not far from Kobe. Its strong geometric forms and unique application of aperture make the structure an interesting maze of light and shadow. Discoveries made from analyzing the Koshino House were applied to two different apartment suite layouts. It is the intention that each apartment design mimics some of the Koshino House’s architectural movements and formal language.

The initial phase in this term’s studio, Phase 1 dealt with studying a precedent house, providing the student with opportunity to examine formal, contextual, material, spatial, ans social aspects of urban dwelling. Architecture should be carefully considered in multiple contexts, whether that be as a micro unit within a cluster of dwellings or as an appendage of the larger urban system.

PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT VERSION

The case study I chose to explore was the E.1027 Villa designed by Eileen Grey and led me to be inspired by the way she was able to transform her architecture to suit the needs of the client (herself). This trans-formative architecture led me to design a series of revolving built-in furniture for the user to open or close depending on their needs at the time. This would then create sub spaces in the center for additional storage, study areas or a library.

PHASE 1 - HOUSING ANALYSIS & APARTMENT DESIGN

Project Title: HOUSE OF THE FUTURE ANALYSIS Student Name: JO-LYNN YEN Date: January 2021

The House of the Future by Peter and Alison Smithson is a 9x15 meter area which demonstrates a clear courtyard typology. This living experiment speculates the effects of material, technology, and furniture on a living unit (suburban home) designed for a childless couple set for the 1980s. In the attempt to fuse facilities with architecture, various free-standing stationary objects and facilities generate an enclosed void space for circulation. Following the study of the House of the Future, I explored this idea of how the wall, which contains these standard machines and appliances that make our life easier, can act as a container or storage while defining the spatial structure for a 1-bedroom unit. It can also simultaneously act as a barrier or intermediary between the public and private spaces. Moving between the different functional spaces, the purpose of the wall changes from a counter space for kitchen appliances, to storage spaces for books, clothes, or furniture. As the purpose of the wall changes, the height of the wall also changes to accommodate the different facilities it supports.

Project Title: Site Analysis Student Name: Karen Ajala Date: 11.02.2021

The site is located in the city of Calgary, AB Canada. It is on the border of Beltline and Mission. It has a unique and dynamic blend of functions. The functions are residential and commercial, with a few notable schools and churches. The more active streets contain boutiques selling fashion, retro furniture, vinyl and gifts. Dining spans trendy taco joints, locavore eateries and Korean restaurants, while nightlife encompasses craft beer pubs, live music venues and dance clubs. There is a presence of landscaped gardens, a few squares , a casino, sport center and the beautiful elbow river. For commute, there is the C train, bicycle lanes and residents are encourage to car share or walk.

MISSION

Transitioning into the project that would occupy the remainder BORDER of this term’s time, we began with conducting a site analysis. The specified location of our study was along 17th Avenue, between 2nd Street and Macleod Trail SE in Calgary, Alberta. This specific location is home to the city’s Catholic heart (St. Mary’s Cathedral, 9 A V E N U etc.), as well as the Elbow River and the Stampede1 Grounds.

Each student was asked to choose a plot of land within the zone of study. This lot would house the future mixed use development project to be designed later in the semester. Analysis of the site in relation to the chosen plot required careful consideration of various contextual influences, including pedestrian and traffic movement, identification of existing influential structures, dynamics of demographic identifiers, and more. After collecting this information, the challenge was to then graphically represent the findings in a way that is both informative and aesthetically pleasing.

My proposed site is located on the corner of 18ave and 1st street se intersecting three major street axes being 17 ave, 1st street, and Mcleod trail. currently this site sits on a large parking lot predominately for the casino across the street. During my site visit, i found that there was a sort of disconnect with the amount of activity along 17ave and compared to the other streets. It was noticeably quieter with very few people meandering about. Not only this, but I also found that there was a lack of green space while the existing green spaces are under utilized which leaves the opportunity for a new gathering space for visitors

Project Title: Site Analysis Student Name: JO-LYNN YEN Date: February 2021 This site is located in the Beltline, on the corner of 17th Ave SW and 1st Street SW—at the border of the Beltline and Mission neighbourhood. I first started studying the site by looking at the flows of traffic and pedestrian circulation with the different pathways, biking trails and dedicated lanes, and the major and minor roads that structure the site. This is technically a very walkable site, with the flat terrain and dedicated biking lanes, and the 7 bus lines less than half a kilometer within its vicinity and the 7 minutes walk to the CTrain station, making transit convenient for most trips. It is also notable that this site has always been in located in, or is in close proximity to, the commercial district and the historical Francophone community of Calgary.

Encapsulating the dynamic nature of the site and the unique blend of history and modern ways, I will be exploring the grafting between a dynamic engaging form with the more rigid form in such a way that a union will be formed and the partners will continue to grow. This will generate a new kind of tissue on site, in the city of Calgary along 17th street. One that will continue to encourage community building while preserving history and its uniqueness. In grafting the program, the dynamic feature became the greenhouse and the rigid residential, that way, every user at all levels can enjoy the dynamic element. Ground floor

One of the unique challenges and opportunities of this studio’s main project is to design a building based on a single word. The word that I chose for my project is “joints”. Exploring this word meant study of the various types of joints, analysis of different applications of the subject, and creating abstract and contextually applied cardboard models of the word to communicate discoveries from these explorations.

Exploring the term ‘graft’ in horticulture which is defined by: A bud, shoot, or scion of a plant inserted in a groove, slit, or the like in a stem or stock of another plant in which it continues to grow. I took this concept and created a series of models to capture the parasitic nature of a graft with a host object. Alternatively, I explored other means of connecting the grafts with the use of hot glue, binding the elements together.

From Manuel Gausa’s Open System Approach to Housing Form, I chose the word “series” as my concept. Through a series of 2D and 3D explorations, from the theoretical meaning of the word series through math to the physical application of series through ideas of a structural network, tiling and generation of individual units; I was approaching my project with the ideas of repetition and adaptability that has some sort of a basic order, system or guideline with a generative ability. Using a combination of layering and stacking methods to construct an abstract model of my interpretation of what series meant, I used this approach to an abstract model my site and massing. The vertical joint stacking was used to construct the hierarchical relation of the different circulation near my site, while the horizontal directional layering and tiling was used to show the relation between the site’s land-use bylaws of floorarea-ratios and height.

Taking our skills gained from unit design, our analysis of site, and our conceptual knowledge from our physical models, we were asked to develop a multi-unit residential building built around a multi-generational co-op program and a substantially sized greenhouse. Choosing the word graft and using it’s medical definition I wanted to take a materiality and create this sense of repair with the building to the urban fabric and the modern materials to the more locally known brick facades of the area. Removing the kitchen from every unit and placing it in the centre of each floor, a community will be made by access to fresh food via greenhouse and cooking/socializing in the heart of the home all on one floor. The stepping back effect from the street allows for a better public realm and the greenhouse on each floor and the roof add to a biophilic design approach that brings nature to the occupants of an urban residential tower.

Project Title: The ConneXion Student Name: Teegan Heinricks Date: April 2021

Finally, extensive time and attention was given to designing a medium sized multi-unit residential building. The design of the building should carefully consider all of the previous studies and analyses, including site studies, cardboard model experiments, and driver word examinations. I have called my building The ConneXion. Heavily centered on the concept of the word “joints”, the structure accentuates opportunities for community growth and relationship strengthening by carefully curating pedestrian movement throughout the site and within the building. The site is essentially populated by two separate buildings which are joined in the middle by a pedestrian bridge. To encourage occupant interaction, the building’s greenhouse, a program requirement, has been carried throughout the various levels. It is anticipated that this amenity will encourage interaction by acting as a mediator for comfortable, casual interaction as often as possible. The ConneXion explores the opportunities to act as a link between the various architectural styles within its vicinity, encourage strengthening of familial and community bonds, and provide access to amenities encouraging individual and cultural development.

My project seeks to redefine how urban agriculture can coexist within a residential context. Implementing a series of grafting techniques, the building is raised above on pillars while the area below consists of a lowered plaza with shops and community rooms adjoining it. The shape of the green house above compliments the sloped nature of the plaza, almost as if the two pieces fit together. The residential portion then wraps around and punches through the greenhouse as a means to connect the two programs together.

Project Title: SKIP.SHELF.STOP Student Name: JO-LYNN YEN Date: April 2021

The importance of community is evident with historical implications associated with the site. Therefore, an idea that was explored in this project was a space that could allow people in this walkable neighbourhood to enjoy a dedicated indoor garden or park-like space all-year round for the community. The generative ability of the “modular unit” explored in the House of the Future finds its way back with the standardized residential units which are being tiled three-dimensionally on an altered grid for circulation. The skip-stop system was employed to regulate the flows of the residents and general public, while unifying the building that becomes divided with the dedicated indoor park that is being inserted on every other level for circulatory control. This indoor park and garden attraction, and the shop on the corner of the 1st and 17th, reflects the commercial and community values of the site.
