Message from the president

HELLO UC BERKELEY CIRCLE K! I CAN’T BELIEVE WE ALREADY MADE IT TO THE END OF THE FALL SEMESTER!! IT STILL FEELS LIKE YESTERDAY WHEN I MET YOU ALL DURING OUR WELCOME WEEK EVENTS AND FIRST GENERAL MEETING. IT HAS BEEN SUCH A PLEASURE TO GET TO KNOW ALL OF YOU THROUGHOUT THE PAST FEW MONTHS. I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT THIS SEMESTER HAS FELT LIKE A HECTIC, NONSTOP GRIND. LET’S TAKE A MOMENT TO REFLECT ON ALL THE GOOD TIMES AND THE MEMORIES WE MADE TOGETHER AMIDST ALL THE OTHER STRESSFUL MOMENTS OF COLLEGE. WHETHER IT BE THE FIRST BOBA RUN WITH YOUR FAMILY, EATING A LOVELY HOMEMADE DINNER WITH THE KIWANIANS, OR SPENDING TIME AT YOUR FAVORITE WEEKEND SERVICE, I HOPE YOU WERE ABLE TO GAIN SOMETHING FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE IN CIRCLE K. I’M SO HAPPY TO SEE ALL OF YOU AT FALL BANQUET, SO WE CAN RECOGNIZE THE CLUB’S ACHIEVEMENTS TOGETHER, WHICH WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT YOU, AND SPEND SOME QUALITY TIME TOGETHER BEFORE WE ALL LEAVE TO ENJOY WINTER BREAK! THIS CLUB MEANS SO MUCH MORE TO ME THAN JUST SERVICE — YOU GUYS ARE MY FAMILY, MY HOME AWAY FROM HOME. WHETHER IT BE JUST A QUICK HELLO WALKING THROUGH CAMPUS OR CATCHING UP DURING A SERVICE EVENT, YOU GUYS NEVER FAIL TO MAKE MY DAY. I HOPE THAT YOU ARE ALSO FINDING YOUR OWN MEANING IN THIS CLUB TOO AND CONTINUE TO GROW ON YOUR CIRCLE K JOURNEY. WHETHER YOU ARE AN OLD FOSSIL LIKE ME, OR A FRESH NEW MEMBER, I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR JOINING THE KIWANIS FAMILY AND CHOOSING CIRCLE K TO BE A PART OF YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE HOW YOU’LL ALL GROW AND WHAT YOU’LL ACCOMPLISH NEXT SEMESTER IN WHATEVER YOU DO! LOVE KRISTINE

Message from the editor HELLO EVERONE! MY NAME IS SHARON AND I AM DELIGHTED TO SERVE YOU AS YOUR 2019-2020 PUBLICATIONS EDITOR! ALONG WITH THIS BEING MY FIRST NEWSLETTER, THIS IS ALSO MY FIRST YEAR HERE AT BERKELEY, AND I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER THAT I JOINED CIRCLE K! I MET SO MANY WONDERFUL PEOPLE, MADE SO MANY NEW FRIENDS, AND I WAS ABLE TO COMPILE ALL OF THE MEMORIES WE MADE AS A CLUB IN THIS NEWSLETTER! I HOPE THAT YOU HAVE AS MUCH FUN READING IT AS I HAD MAKING IT! LOVE, SHARON 2

Message from the LTG

HEYO BEARS! MY NAME IS DARIAN AND I SERVE AS YOUR GOLDEN GATE LT. GOVERNOR! YOUR CLUB HAS ACCOMPLISHED SO MANY THINGS SO FAR IN THIS FALL SEASON! BERKELEY CKI HAS HIT AT LEAST 1,000 HOURS SINCE MARCH AND THATS NOT SOMETHING A LOT OF CLUBS CAN DO. YOU GUYS SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOURSELVES, EACH ONE OF YOU CONTRIBUTED TO THAT NUMBER AND EACH ONE OF YOU DESERVE THAT CREDIT. IN FALL YOUR CLUB HAD AMAZING ENGAGEMENT AND PARTICIPATION ON THE DIVISIONAL AND THE DISTRICT LEVEL, BRINGING THE MOST MEMBERS OF ANY GOLDEN GATE CLUB TO FTC AND ALMOST WINNING AT CKI NORTH. I’M BLESSED TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE AS YOUR GOVERNOR AND BE CLOSE ENOUGH TO VISIT YOU FROM TIME TO TIME. I THINK YOU’RE DOING AMAZING AND HOPE YOU CAN KEEP UP THIS INCREDIBLE MOMENTUM. STAY GOLDEN! SINCERELY, DARIAN SEIN-LWIN

HELLO EVERYONE! CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING IT THROUGH THE FALL SEMESTER! I HOPE YOU HAVE ENJOYED YOUR TIME SO FAR IN CIRCLE K AND THAT YOU CAN ALL LOOK BACK ON THE SEMESTER AND REMEMBER THE FOOD ADVENTURES, SERVICE EVENTS, AND COUNTLESS MEMORIES THAT YOU MADE IN THIS CLUB SO FAR. HAVE A WONDERFUL, WELL-DESERVED BREAK! WE WILL BE RIGHT HERE WHEN YOU GET BACK. SEE YOU IN 2020! BEST REGARDS, CHRIS

ANIMAL SHELTER "I enjoy volunteering at the animal shelter because I gOt to play with cute animals. I also find that it’s a good way to relieve stress. We usually take the dogs out for walks and play with the cats inside. I love seeing the animals happy to have us there." ~RACHEL LAM

FALL SINGLE SERVICE

HALLOWEENFEST "Planning Halloweenfest was pretty stressful, but it was worth all the hard work we put in! Hearing the kids scream in the haunted house made me super happy BEcause it meant the haunted house was actually scary! It was also really nice seeing both kids and older folks have fun playing carnival games!" ~JENNY CHAU

"At the annual Halloween Fest we helped plan for the public event held at the Lincoln Center in Oakland. The event was mainly targeted for kids with many various booths with prizes as well as educational opportunities. At the event itself, each person/persons were responsible for their own booth or scaring kids in the main hall. This was my first Halloweenfest, where I contributed to the design of the booths and posters for the booths. The setup for the event was organized by our awesome service chair Jenny, who did the majority of the booth creation and setup for the event was planned by her. At the Halloweenfest, I helped hand out prizes to children, encouraging them to try the many wondrous different booths with games. I wanted to make sure the children were having fun at the event; also distributing prizes to kids who were short on tickets because nobody gets left behind .I had a lot of fun with this event, as I got to meet many new people from the club as well aND interact with the kids." ~PHILLIP LY

KEY TO COLLEGE "Key to College is an annual event that UCB CKI hosts for local Key Clubs and KIWIN’S clubs. This year’s theme was under the sea and clubs from four divisions came out to learn about college and the application process!" ~AMANDA CALINDAS

GILL TRACT FARM "The Gill Tract Farm event was a great way to help out a non-profit community farm! It was fun to work with plants, organize vegetables, and learn more about what the farm does. We also got free pastries!" ~VALERIE HAINES

ST. MARKS "I prepared delicious sandwiches and set up decorative dining tables for community members in need. I most enjoyed hearing stories of joy and happiness from the St. Mark’s staff. I decided to help out with this event because hunger is a societal issue that I think should be resolved. I felt accomplished that I served my community after the event. Shoutout to Jenny Chau for leading us during this event." ~AUSTIN HOANG

FALL TRAINING CONFERENCE "FTC is an 3 day, 2 night, one of a kind conference where I was able to personally grow, and honestly where I saw the most growth in so many new and returning members! I am so happy and grateful to have had the chance to go for my third YEAR in a row and each time I go, I just learn so much more about myself and grow more in love with UCBCKI!" ~VICTOR GONZALEZ

"I enjoyed learning how to make the friendship bracelets the most! It was also super fun socializing with people while making props and practicing my lines!!I met a lot of new people I didn’t know IN CKI through the ftc workdays, which made me more comfortable in the club. Victor did an awesome job organizing them so a big thank you to him. Also, thank you to Kristine for bringing us cupcakes, they were delicious!" ~CAMERON CHOI

"I really love the family system because it allows for a smaller community within our Circle K community! As a family head, I’ve gotten to know each of my family members much better than I would without the system, and I’m so grateful for the friends I’ve made through it! We do everything from going to Oakland for dinner to game nights, and every time we hang out it is so much fun. I encourage everyone to be in a family!" ~SARAH GOU

DECIDING TO BE PART OF CIRCLE K'S MENTOR MENTEE SYSTEM WAS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST CHOICES I EVER MADE. THROUGH MY MENTOR AND THE OTHERS IN MY LINEAGE I WAS ABLE TO FIND A HOME AWAY FROM HOME, AND I COULDN'T BE EVEN MORE THANKFUL FOR THAT! THIS SYSTEM DEFINITELY HELPED ME FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE IN THE CLUB SO BIG THANKS TO MIWA WHO WORKED SO HARD TO MAKE THIS A SUCCESS!!! 8

KIWANIS FAMILY CIRCLE K IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST COMMUNITY SERVICE CLUBS HERE AT UC BERKLELEY. BUT IT DOESN'T STOP THERE, KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL SPONSORS KIWANIS FAMILY CLUBS AT DIFFERENT BRANCHES: K-Kids (Elementary School) Builders Club (Middle School) KIWINS (High School) Key Club (High School)

The Golden Gate Division is a group of Circle K clubs located in the eastern part of the Bay Area. Clubs within the Golden Gate Division often collaborate with one another through events SUCH AS the monthly Divisional Council Meetings (DCM), where clubs gather to give their updates, and the monthly Divisional Service Projects (DSP), where members of the Golden Gate Division work together in a large service event.

The CNH District of Circle K is a supergroup of nine divisions in the three states of California, Nevada, and Hawaii. These divisions meet together for several annual district-wide events, including Fall Training Conference (FTC), Crazy Kompetition for Infants North/South (CKI North/South), District Large-Scale Service Project (DLSSP), and District Convention (DCON). THESE EVENTS ARE A GREAT WAY OF GETTING TO KNOW OTHER PEOPLE FROM OTHER DIVISIONS THAT COULD POSSIBLY END UP BECOMING A LIFELONG FRIEND!
