WAOW

REMY AND STUFF Hello friends! Welcome to the fourth issue of “Calvin’s Corner”! Hope this issue is as spooky for you as it is for me. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays being the spookiest of them all while also kicking off the holiday season. Please don’t stress yourself out too much during this round of midterms and destress with creepy stories or the sweet sweet candy of Halloween. An update on my life! My ankle was sprained last week at CKI North and I’m really thankful to everyone who helped me out whether it was walking, driving me around, or just your kind words. But it’s almost been a week now and it feels a lot better! Which is good because now I’ll be able to go Trick or Treating

tonight!!! (You can catch me in Berkeley Hills tryna get the good candy). I hope everyone else has a fun, safe Halloween. I’d like to thank everyone who helped make this issue possible. Thank you to my wonderful committee, to everyone who submitted content, to everyone who offered me support, and to everyone who may have unknowingly gave up their photo as content while commenting on the facebook post in the UC Berkeley Circle [K]ommunity page! That’s all for now! You can email me at cki.remy@ gmail.com or shoot me a Facebook message if you need anything :) REMY D’AGNILLO PUBLICATIONS | 2015-16

SPOOKY STORIES

TWO SENTENCE STORIES Kristy Kim & Mike Zhou

Growing up with cats and dogs, I got used to the sounds of scratching at my door while I slept. Now that I live alone, it is much more unsettling. I begin tucking him into bed and he tells me, “Daddy check for monsters under my bed.” I look underneath for his amusement and see him, another him, under the bed, staring back at me quivering and whispering, “Daddy there’s somebody on my bed.” Don’t be scared of the monsters, just look for them. Look to your left, to your right, under your bed, behind your dresser, in your closet but never look up, she hates being seen. I can’t move, breathe, speak or hear and it’s so dark all the time. If I knew it would be this lonely, I would have been cremated instead. I woke up to hear knocking on glass. At first, I though it was the window until I heard it come from the mirror again. She asked why I was breathing so heavily. I wasn’t. There was a picture in my phone of me sleeping. I live alone. They delivered the mannequins in bubble wrap. From the main room I begin to hear popping.

GHOST FEES Kevin “Olaf” Chen

I spent the summer studying Swedish with some other exchange students from UC schools, and we spent Fourth of July weekend in Poland. Being poor college students, we thought it was a good idea to save money by flying RyanAir, or the European Southwest Airlines. There were 13 of us in all who had signed up to go. But when we were going through security, one guy (whom I call Colin) was not there. I had seen him behind me about five minutes ago, so we thought it was no big deal. We ate dinner inside the waiting area and messaged Colin our location. Still nothing. Soon after, the boarding time had arrived. By then, each of us had called or texted Colin at least twice and we were seriously concerned that something had happened to him. But perhaps we were mostly worried about burning up huge amounts of international data to reach him. Then, he finally responded that he wasn’t going to make it. As it turned out, he had bought a ticket for the wrong day and failed to print a boarding pass. It would have cost over $100 to rectify the issue, and he was absolutely miffed! We didn’t understand why on earth would it cost extra to print a boarding pass at the airport. Remember, kids, always come to the airport prepared! If you see a ridiculously cheap plane ticket, you never know at which corner can a ghost fee trip you from behind with a buzzsaw... Now, I got myself into a pretty spooky predicament during this trip as well... but PM me if you want to learn more!

MY DAUGHTER LEARNED HOW TO COUNT

My daughter woke me around 11:50 last night. My wife and I had picked her up from her friend Sally’s birthday party, brought her home, and put her to bed. My wife went into the bedroom to read while I fell asleep watching the Braves game. “Daddy,” she whispered, tugging my shirt sleeve. “Guess how old I’m going to be next month.” “I don’t know, beauty,” I said as I slipped on my glasses. “How old?” She smiled and held up four fingers. It is 7:30 now. My wife and I have been up with her for almost 8 hours. She still refuses to tell us where she got them.

MY FAMILY’S HAUNTED HOME IN VIETNAM Sarah Phan

I was 12 years old. My older brothers and I had just landed in Vietnam. It was probably around 10:00 p.m. there when we arrived after the most nauseating 15 hour flight. I was so exhausted I could barely stand. My half-opened eyes were greeted with my relatives warm but overwhelming smiles, hugs, and kisses. At the time, they were just strangers to me. I had never met them in person. They immediately brought us into a taxi to take us home. They showed me room; it was a huge single. It also had a balcony, looking over the neighborhood. I fell asleep once I made contact with the bed. Being a light slighter that I am, I consistently woke up when my family came inside to check on me. However, during the middle of the night, I woke up with an unsettling feeling in my chest. I sat up and looked outside the window of my balcony. Behind the window, stood a silhouette of a man resting his arm against the window pane above his head, and he was looking directly at me. I was frightened and did not know how to react, so I immediately hid under my covers and went back to sleep. The next morning, I got out of bed and walked over to the balcony window. I learned that the only way to get to the balcony was to first enter my room and then unlock the rusty door to the balcony. I did not wake up to a man entering my room, and I definitely would have woken up to sound of the rusty balcony door opening. I looked at the floor of the balcony, and it was completely covered in potted plants. There was no way a man could have been standing behind the balcony window. I wasn’t alone. My brothers who stayed in different rooms experienced nightmares and feelings of someone dragging them out of bed. However, we chose to ignore it all.

A few years later, my dad went to visit and stayed at the same house. Our relatives hired a psychic medium to investigate the house. Apparently, my brothers and I were not the only ones having paranormal experiences. This psychic medium claimed to be able to communicate with spirits and find where their bodies are trapped. Yes, bodies. She performed her usual rituals, and began walking around the house, marking regions on the floor with an “X” to indicate where she felt the strongest connection to the spirits. At the marked locations, they began digging into the ground. What they unveiled was unnerving. They found what appeared to be fossilized human remains buried deep into the ground. I was watching all of this through the video recordings my dad brought back from his visit. I distinctly remember seeing something that looked like a person’s rib cage. I don’t remember what was done in response to their findings, but I’m sure they paid their respects to the dead and blessed the house. To this day, my father’s family no longer lives in that house. They sold it and moved on with their lives. Hopefully they now live in happy homes, never having to worry about who’s watching them sleep every night.
