SINGLE

SER

VICE Hello friends! Single Service is the big service projects that Ryan Tsao plans out every season! In the fall, we traditional do the Halloween Festival in Oakland China Town! Enjoy as Gavin recalls all the screams and more of his Fall Single Service experience :3

Screams. If I had to describe Ryan Tsao’s Fall Single Service project in one word, that would be it. Screams from the Haunted House, screams of joy as the children ran back and forth between the various booths, and screams of agony from the unfortunate volunteers who were running the ‘bowling’ booth. Walking into the Oakland Chinatown center where the event was being held, I was excited to see how the past few months of

planning and preparing would pan out. To put it simply: it was amazing and it was fun, even as a volunteer! Still, the event was very tiring, especially when I had to man the ‘bowling’ booth, since I was constantly chasing after the bowling ball and restacking the bottles, which would occasionally fly everywhere.

children who were at the event. The kids were having a lot of fun and enjoyed the daytime festivities. The parents were grateful for the event, since the kids would burn some of their seemingly infinite amount of energy. I encourage everyone to participate in the remaining Single Service events, because they are just super fun!

However, as someone who is able to speak Cantonese, I had some short conversations with the parents and

FALL TRAINING

CON

FERENCE Hello friends! Fall Training Conference (FTC) is probably one of the most memorable experiences one can have in Circle K. Enjoy as Bryan recounts, in great detail, his experience of this three day extravaganza :3

Day 1: The Chaos Ensues Unfortunately, day begin at 4:30 in the morning as I force myself to wake up early to catchup on work. “RISE AND SHINE,” I tell my body... but it takes me a couple hours of nonstop work to finally wake up.

hours. I ask him for advice and he tells me to follow him on Twitter (there’s a background to it, but I will not say). The usual Friday morning right?

After a 30 min appointment with one of my students, our Econ staff celebrates with pasta, a slight change from The usual Friday commences: our usual tense atmosphere. good workout at the gym at I kind of like it, but it’s a bit 6, light breakfast afterwords, weird given our last few and work at UCSF until noon. weeks. My director lets slip It’s pretty hard to stay focused that she will be on sabbatical since I’m super pumped next semester, and it’s been for work. Unfortunately, the on my mind all day. morning turns out to be a little bit more chaotic - actually a All throughout, I am super lot more - than usual. I make eager to leave for FTC, but attempts to brew thai tea, I find that I really have not but I ended up spilling all the had time to slow down. I’ve leaves into my tea. So much constantly been looking for trying coffee filters instead forward to the weekend, but of my “sock method”... But I have also been thinking too luckily, I’m able to get through hard about what I also need it all and make it to work on to get done... this is actually time. bad because it’s a regression into my “anxiety phase.” It’s now about 2pm now and I make it in time to be the first It’s chill though because I’m one at my professor’s office finally getting some peace

and quiet while writing down my reflections here! 7:00 rolls around and we’re FINALLY off to FTC in Sonora. It’s about a 3-3.5 hour drive northeast up a mountain - my favorite kind of drive! You can see below for my usual epic time-lapse. 3 hours later and we finally get to the campsite. It seems like fewer Circle Kers are here this year, but quality > quantity right. It’s only the first night, but I am already pumped for the weekend and ready to see new and familiar faces. The voyage has just begun. GO CKI! Day 2: The Voice is Lost 5:45am: My alarm clock rings and I slowly jump out of bed and get dressed for a morning run. I keep telling myself that I won’t regret running up and downhill in +-40 degree whether, but you have to start sometime right? Two friends the night before

LIKE FTC? MAKE SURE TO REGISTER FOR DCON AT TINYURL.COM/ UCBCKIDCON expressed interest in running with me, but they are unable to wakeup in time. My run lasts from 6:10-6:40. It’s a normal 3 mile jog up and down the trail that we took up to the campsite. It’s been a while since I’ve run outside in freezing temperatures and even though it was a pain, I loved it; the cold air piercing my lungs, the numbness of my fingers - I felt like I was really one with nature. You can definitely check the wonderful pictures I quickly took as I briskly ran uphill. The morning finally begins around 7am when all attendees are called to breakfast. Luckily, I stashed some granola bars in my backpack and so I am able to last through breakfast. The usual routine at FTC ensues: general session, workshops*, and fun activities later. Although I think my voice lasted pretty long during the morning before it finally gave out after repeated cheers of “GOLDEN GATE MARCH ASSEMBLE.” *While I do love workshops at FTC, I think I am just too much of a fossil to pay attention anymore. Some of my fellow comrades who gave into the sleeping bug.. Fast forward all the “fun” workshops which most of my friends slept through, and you finally get to the most meaningful part of FTC: new member induction. This is where any sanity you have left and any voice you may have left is finally destroyed.

We rise and await our District Governor (Dgov) as he says a few words regarding Circle K. A tear starts to fall down your eyes as you watch new members get introduced into the family. My voice is already gone at this point, but somehow I manage to scream even louder to cheer on many of the new friends I have met this weekend and this year. How can the night end without witnessing our clubs give it their all at the campfire skits? Not to be biased, but I honestly think Berkeley killed it. As I am writing this, I will probably make numerous edits, since my eyes have begun to get heavy. Voice lost, numerous things I brought that I can’t recall where they are now, and probably a bunch of neurons in my brain dead now from all the screaming... but it doesn’t matter, because I am home... Day 3: The Surrealism My alarm wakes me at 6am, but I postpone running just this once to sleep more. My throat is a bit sore, but I hope it’s because of the screaming and not the cold. I eventually wake at about 8am and pack all my belongings. Just looking at all the spirit items I collected throughout the week makes me wish the morning would not end. Breakfast is pretty quick as I eat with some of my good friends in our Division. We share some good laughs and reflect on the weekend.

Closing session begins at 9am and we wait patiently for awards to be released. Our club won overall fundraising total and Los Medanos, one of our neighboring schools, won #1 in fundraising for Pediatric Trauma Program! Even though we didn’t win best skit, I am so blessed to be apart of our Division. We have grown so much through these past years, and our hard work has paid off with praise, recognition, and new friendships. We get one final picture with all our schools and scream one final time for one another. I definitely know that Circle K will always be my home in college because where else am I willing to scream my lungs out? Though this voyage has ended, this journey with Circle K will never end. How so? On the way home, we had our little adventure with the new friends we made :) “I BELIEVE IN CKI” Reflection: Overall, FTC is that experience you may be searching for in college. Whether you are a freshman or even a senior, you will have a blast. Even if you just meet one friend, that one friend can be a homie for a lifetime, and what better way to bond than to scream your lungs out while cheering for your club?! - BRYAN WU, 4TH YEAR, - DIVISIONAL SERVICE CHAIR

SIX

FLAGS SOCIAL

Hello friends! UCBCKI still stays in touch over break with various hangouts, events, online games, Facebook, and more! Every year we have a Six Flags social! This particular Six Flags social is written about the SoCal one at Magic Mountain. Enjoy as Neiron tells the story of the Magic Mountain experience :3

As 8 UCB Circle K’ers from the greater Southern California area gathered in Valencia, we were all thrilled – some more than others - to ride some of the fastest, tallest, and best rollercoasters in the nation. As some of us were thrill seekers and rollercoaster fanatics, others, such as myself, were not as “pumped” as we could be. I was honestly still terrified of riding rollercoasters, but alas I was not alone in that regard. Of course, with the lines being ridiculously short for a theme-park, we decided to ride one of the most extreme coasters in the park

10

first: X2, a 4-dimensial rollercoaster, where the seats you sit in rotate in different directions as the ride speeds through the rails. Terrified as some of us were, we rode it and many more rollercoasters throughout the day, slowly conquering our fears together: From Twisted Colossus, Full Throttle, Ninja, Gold Rusher, and even the literal jaw-dropping Lex Luthor’s Drop of Doom, it was fun. We even got to play a few of the carnival games together, although none of us won a large prize. A personal favorite moment of mine would be the “hidden secrets”

of the Full Throttle ride, where none of the members that knew what the ride was like, would tell us first-timers what laid behind the hill blocking the view of the rollercoaster. Of course, I won’t spoil it for anyone else that plans to ride it for the first time, but what I will tell you is this: ‘That entire ride was a troll,” and that everyone that didn’t tell us, “Thank you… you’re all still trolls.” - NEIRON PENALBA, 3RD - YEAR, SPIRIT & SOCIAL - CHAIR

This means anyone that’s a part of the club (dues paid or not), can chair-a-social for our club to partake in! Socials that you can chair range from Bridges Indoor Rock-climbing/ Bouldering, A Movie Night *cough Deadpool cough*, to even an evening at the RSF to

FALL

CAZ

EDERO Hello friends! Fall Cazadero is a yearly event we do with Berkeley Kiwanis! The Fall project is one day and focuses more on the tear down of the camp. Check back soon for the three day Spring Caz counterpart! Enjoy as Heyun recounts her Fall Caz experience :3

The forests of Cazadero came alive with the energy and passions of the Kiwanis Family on November 1st. An annual event with our Berkeley Kiwanis, Cazadero is loved by many for the beautiful scenery, crisp air, and hands-on work. A two hour drive up some windy roads in Sonoma County, Cazadero

12

is a performing arts camp for middle and high school students that takes place in the summer. Twice a year, we go in to help break down (fall) and set up (spring) the camp structure as well as help out with any other miscellaneous chores. I, personally, was assigned to clear out a gutter filled with old leaves and take out nails from the cabins

with a hammer. Others helped wheelbarrow materials and fill sand bags. The manual labor and nature was really therapeutic and a nice break from the bustle of school and I can’t wait to go back next spring when it’s a three day, two night long event! - HEYUN JEONG, 3RD - YEAR, DISTRICT - PUBLICATIONS
