MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello! We have reached the last level of our Fall 2016 semester! Finals are upon us and winter break is almost at our grasp. However, take a second to reflect on your college experience. Regardless if you are a freshmen or a senior, college consists of everything in between a stressful thought to an endless laugh. Thus I would to thank you for allowing Circle K to be a part of your college experience. Fall semester has consisted of such great achievements that wouldn’t have been possible without your time and dedication. Whether it’s fundraising at concessions, eating 3lbs of Fenton’s ice cream, or your favorite weekend service project, each and every one of you have made this club a family. For many of you, the journey has just started and I hope you come to love this organization for not only its service, but for the people who have become inspirations to you. Realize that a close friend you have met in Circle K may have started with a simple hello or a shared laugh. You are a fun, unique, and loving group of people with so much potential to become amazing leaders in whatever you set out to accomplish! First timer, board member, returning member, or fossilized senior, you are part of the Kiwanis Family. A family that drinks too much boba and changes people’s lives. You have changed my life and I can never thank you enough for that. So never miss an opportunity to say hello because it can go a long way in this club. Have a relaxing winter break, you all have earned it. Stay in touch over the holidays and see you in the spring! Best, Ana Chavez

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR Hellloooooooo! :) Now that we’re almost done with this semester (whooo), I hope you have/had a great time at Fall Banquet! Thank you to all the people who helped me write articles, find pictures or just cheered me on. :) Especially thank you to my subcommittees-I really don’t know what’d I do without you <3. (Make sure to look at Mattin’s page!!!) I hope you’ll be able to look through the newsletter and remember certain memories-whether it was hanging out with family, mentor/ mentee or cheering at FTC. I hope you’ve had a great time this semester attending various socials, volunteering at service events, or just simply grabing food with someone in the club! I am happy that I was able to meet and get to know the new members and reconnect with the older members~ :) Good luck to everyone on their finals and have a fun and amazing winter break! :) Thank you, Annie Chen

MESSAGE FROM our advisor Hello UCBCKI! Another semester has past and I cannot be more proud to call myself your advisor. Seeing many of you at FTC cheering your hearts out, meeting members from all around the District, learning from the various workshops, and seeing what Circle K has to offer you was a wonderful sight. service 6

bridgeview trail restoration At the Bridgeview Trail Restoration service project, we had the opportunity to cut back invasive ivy plants, collect seeds for the pollinator garden, and explore the surrounding ecosystem in a guided tour. I really enjoyed learning about the interesting qualities of the species that lived there as well as getting my hands dirty with my fam in my first Circle K service project! -Cameron Yuki

Roots academy beautification Each month, the Golden Gate Division of CNH Circle K gets together to do a service project. In September, we made a difference at Roots Academy by moving entire rooms into other rooms, painting walls, and putting up bulletin boards. Communities and people are the roots of our service, and we help them grow. -Austin Frenes

Concessions Working concessions was so crazy but so fun! Being able to see how they make food for the games, working behind the scenes and running around to give food for the customers was hectic but I feel like all of the volunteers were able to bond through it all. I got to be closer to a lot more CKI members through concessions and I’d definitely do it again next time! -Anna Se

Jade Wong: you’re the second best roommate (bc i am the first) but you’re an even better friend <3 love you lots

Animal Shelter

Animal Shelter holds a special place in my heart. Not only is it my favorite service event but also the most meaningful as it was my first ever event with Circle K. Helping to socialize dogs and cats for them to be better adoptable helps them and helps me de-stress as well! -Annie Chen

Start with a story

Every other Sunday morning we go down to Oakland Glenn Dyer Detention facility for the Start With a Story program. Here, we give away books, read to the children, and have a lot of fun with the kids! It’s really fulfilling and a great start to my Sunday mornings! -Remy D’Agnillo

Immigration relief Clinic

While I worked at the Asian Law Alliance’s clinics, one client was applying for DACA status so he could earn a SSN and find a job. He was the first in his family to be accepted into college and wanted to pay the college tuition himself. To help other people like this, I started the Student Immigration Relief Clinic. My hope is that students can get a chance to collaborate with attorneys to help other people in need! -Matthew Chang

St. Marks & loaves and fishes

I had tons of fun working at both St. Mark’s and at Loaves and Fishes. It was a good experience helping set up, cook, serve food, and clean up. Although we come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, we nevertheless have roofs above our heads and warm food within our stomachs; it is important for us to help those who need it the most. -Kevin Wu Winston Lin: hola historiSTON!! :) -Anne

Vania: VANIA! My Mentwin! I love hanging out with you and talking to you! I feel like you, Stephanie, and I are like a true family sometimes. You’re so sweet :-) -Isabel 8

Ana: Thanks for alwaysbeing there for me anytime anywhere. <3 you

HALLOWEENFEST

Halloweenfest is an annual event hosted by UCBCKI in the Lincoln Center in Oakland Chinatown. It consists of two parts: a festival and a haunted house! This year, the festival had the theme of “Cartoon Olympics” and featured various games and prizes. The haunted house was split into two sections: a spooky room, followed by a mini-maze of jump scares! -Gavin Li

Subchairs: Joy & andrew

Halloweenfest went extremely smoothly and was fun for everyone involved! The kids enjoyed all the cartoon-themed festival booths, ranging from powerpuff girlsthemed shooting contests to dragonball z-themed plinko. The haunted house was exceptionally spooky as well, with scary decorations and terrifying actors. All in all, a festival well done! -Andrew Zhang

All my SD Peeps: s/o to sd, what’s good, I see you, it’s love, appreciate it, it’s honor, appreciate it, yeah. Wavey baby. -Gabe

This year’s Halloweenfest was absolutely amazing! I was able to participate in the entire planning process and especially the design of the haunted house. During the actual event, everything went super smoothly, and I love working with the kids who were all super enthusiastic to try the haunted house out. -Joy Xie

Ellen, Miranda and Vivian: I LOVE YOU ALL <3 MENTEEESSS, you’re all stuck with me for the next few years heh. -Annie 9

One time when I was trick-ortreating, I asked the owner of the house if I could go to the bathroom, but then he said no, so I got a handful of candy and ran away.

When I went trick-or-treating with my brother and we would examine what we got at the end of the night and exchange candy, and I’d usually end up ripping him off!!

Chair-A-PRoject

The Chair-a-Project Program has always been a good way to get people interested and involved in one of our many continuous service projects. Being a chair is a big responsibility since you lead the other volunteers at the event, whether you’re doing rad science experiments with kids or overseeing clean up duties at St. Mark’s. Chairing also involves writing presentable yet fun emails to spice up events to those who signed up for it! I hope you first-time chairs enjoyed your little reward from me! On behalf of the club, I want to thank you for helping us do good in the world around us!

We channelled our inner Picassos on a beautiful Sunday morning and were able to give back to the community in a simple yet fun way. It was wonderful to be able to see the children’s instant joy when they saw the paintings on their faces!! -Thanh Thanh Thai

Key to College was an incredible event! Led by Circle K group leaders, local high schoolers and Kiwanis members got to explore UC Berkeley’s campus, learn about college from different workshops and panelists, eat lunch at the famous Campanile, and win prizes at a closing raffle. A fun and helpful adventure! -Randall Belyea

Fall Cazadero was an amazing service project that allowed us to meet members of our local Berkeley Kiwanis club and work together to clean up a music camp. Although it was raining, I enjoyed spending time with my fellow members and meeting new people. I can’t wait for Spring Cazadero! -Mattin Delavar

SOCIALS

The Big C Hike was my first Circle K event, and it is the reason I decided to stay in the club. The welcoming feeling I experienced from all the friendly past members is indescribable. I felt very comfortable and at ease with everyone. This event really showed me what Circle K was about, and how great the people are. -Medha Kothari The Emeryville Social was super fun! A great way to start off the semester: shopping, food, a scavenger hunt, and good company. It was a great way to meet and bond with old and new members of the club. Yay for Fall Cecil Socials!! -Susannah Lee The SF social was my favorite social because I got to bond with people and made new friends. We ate at Pier 39, played games, and visited the Ghirardelli Square. It was my first time in SF with friends rather than family, and I had so much fun! -Kristine Jiao

Aaron, Matt, Gavin, and Gary: Thanks for being the realest people to live with ever! -Austin

Isabel: So glad you came out to CKI this year, can’t wait for the next few years!

Simon: Thanh Thanh: for proThanh^2!! Wow thanks for being such a cute and awesome mentee! Talking to you tecting about life over food is always fun though so my I hope we can hang out more next semester! gains

Fenton’s challenge

I probably should have put more thought before making the decision to be part of the Fentons challenge. It was definitely a scary but fun experience to try and eat 3 pounds of ice cream while watching other challengers endure the same suffering as me. Even though I didn’t win, I was able to cheer on the people beside me as they struggled to drink the rest of the ice cream soup left on their plate. I think the best of part of the Fentons Social was probably when everyone started yelling “CHUG CHUG CHUG” because one guy was almost done and all he had to do was chug the cream, but he seemed like he needed a little extra peer pressure to finish. I felt like the entire experience brought me closer to Circle K and I’m happy to say that I’ll be going again next year! -Avena Cheng

Ana: Susannah: Thank you for the Shusannah years of friendship and does the support <3 And also the best shoprides back to Foothill :’D ping cart!

CKI: Thank you for giving me a home these past semesters! I’m honestly so glad I joined because I got to meet all of you. You all have the kindest souls, volunteering your 19 time to service. I’ll miss you Circle K next semester.

Kathy, Aaron, and Danny: hi oakland -Anne

FALL TRAINING CONFERENCE (FTC) FTC Workdays let everyone contribute to the club, and all our hard work resulted in tangible props and a well-executed skit!! Spending time with good friends and being a part of something greater than ourselves made the experience worthwhile and definitely memorable. -Tiffany Nguyen

For this year’s FTC service project, we chose three projects aligning with our DSI – Serve to Conserve. We aimed to “upcycle” old discarded materials into new, useable goods. With the help of dedicated volunteers, we turned old t-shirts into pillows and dog toys, grocery bags to plastic yarn to be subsequently knitted into quilts, and old beverage bottles to cute planters. The project was a great success, thanks to everyone who attended! -Ryan Tsao

I first joined FTC committee because I knew I wanted to make new members’ experiences at FTC as amazing as the experience I had. Little did I know that I would also have a great six months getting to know my committee along with my co-workshops chair. Especially during FTC, I realized how much fun it was to plan this large-scale event and I know it has been one of my favorite memories of Circle K. -Andrea Seet
