message from your president Greetings everyone!

Although I am sure YOU are not thrilled that winter break ended, I am glad to have you back. Berkeley does not feel quite like home until some part of my day includes catching up with one of you. Spring semester may consist of the regular new year resolutions like eating healthier, studying more, eating out less. But mine this year is to strive and do the very best in making UC Berkeley Circle the support system and family that you deserve. You may be a returning member, new, or a member that ‘comes and goes’ every now and then. However, you are a part of this club in one way or more and this club has never failed to amaze me with its dedication and its compassion for others. That is the UC Berkeley Circle K legacy that is naturally continued every year because you as a member decided to be a friend to another and serve the community. Even though spring semester has just begun, the Circle K term is coming to an end at District Convention in March. Soon, a new executive board will be elected and appoint new officers. Looking back on my years in a Circle K, I could not emphasize enough to you to give something a new try. It could be an officer position, applying for family head, or even chairing something new. Because every new experience will lead you to another and you will learn more about yourself and others in the process. So ignore the hesitation that is holding you back and enjoy your time in Circle K. This spring semester will consist of many great things such as service projects, socials, the District Large Scale Service project, and District Convention. There are endless amount of things that could happen and I hope you will be a part of it! Best, P.S. plz be my successor; please call 888-BE-A-PREZ for more info Ana Chavez

message from your editor Hello!!! (: I hope that everyone had an amazing winter break and really got to relax. Now that we’re back, I hope that you all can go to more service events, social events and meet more and more people! I hope that all of you are able to successfully achieve your New Year Resolutions :) (even though I probably already failed LOL). I hope that this semester, for old returning members, you will be able to create even more fun and long-lasting memories with your second family away from home! For new members, I hope that you will make some new friends as you do service and discover many things in Circle K. Always feel free to come and talk to me! I hope you enjoy this newsletter and learn a little more about Circle K! Best, Annie Chen

message from our ltg Happy New Year and Happy Winter! To all the members, whether you have been in CKI for 1 day or 3 months or 467 days, welcome back to school and to a spring term filled with events all for service, leadership, and fellowship! Believe it or not (your choice) we are much further than halfway through the term and on our way to District Convention. This means several things: 1. It’s going to get spooky. 2. We are ready to celebrate with each other, recognition, and a lot of cheers. 3. YOU ALL contribute to ending the year with fortitude. Yes, maximum strength! I’m so excited to see you all these upcoming months and am right here with you all to get ready, smile, and reminisce. Stay Golden, Monica Willemsz

message from our advisor Hello Everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful break and are refreshed and ready for a whole new semester of serving the community, developing yourself as a leader and making new friends. It is never too late to join this organization, just take advantage of the opportunities and potential that this club provides you! Whether you are new to the club or returning , I look forward to getting to know you better throughout this semester! Best Regards, Chris Tung Kiwanis Advisor for UC Berkeley CKI 4

meet your board

As president, my goal is to see this club thrive as a family and individually. I want to make sure Circle K provides you with the opportunities to not only develop your leadership skills, but also a positive mindset to accomplish personal goals.

From now until the end of my term I really want to get the ball rolling on impact teams! These will be small teams that focus on creating and executing their own community service event, whatever that may be. We’ve never really had something like this, and I’m excited to see how it goes with our club! I also hope to keep providing a variety of fun service opportunities for everyone to come to :)

My goal for the rest of my term is to help all board members to accomplish their goals and to make sure that the members of the club enjoy being part of it! I also want to make sure that registration for DCON goes smoothly and that everyone that wants to go is able to do it :)

executive board

Before the end of this term I’d like to see all of our members, new and returning, enjoy our events. I’d also love to see this year’s board actively helping the new board seamlessly take on their roles and I’ll do my best to contribute to the transition!

Circle K has provided me with a family in Berkeley and I hope that everyone in the club feels the same way. By the end of my term, I will have seen all the accomplishments that we have made as a club because of my role as secretary.

By the end of this term, I hope to finish the traditional and non-traditional scrapbook and place on the awards, just like the many predecessors before me did! :) At my committee meetings, we will be working on the scrapbooks. Come and show off your artistic skills! Don’t think you’re artistic? No worries! There’s always something for everyone to do! I hope to see y’all there!

Hello everyone! My goal for the end of the semester is to host interfam cook off! Please get ready and get excited for this! This is honestly one of my favorite events in CKI. Please come to my committee meeting to talk about secret ingredients and more!

This semester, the goal of my committee is to plan fun events with different branches of the Kiwanis Family. We’ll be working on Takeover a Berkeley Kiwanis meeting, working with other Circle K clubs like UC Davis to plan service socials, and planning a tabletop service project with local Key Clubs in the area. I hope you join me in creating these cool events!

Projects

Hi hello! The rest of my term as Fundraising Chair will be focused on planning a successful and enjoyable Pageant K, our upcoming all-male beauty pageant. Come out to my committee meetings if you’re interested in helping out with the planning process! :))

I will definitely finish pairing mentees who aren’t paired with a mentor yet. I am currently planning a mentor/ mentee event/social where all the mentors and mentees hang out and do fun challenges before the end of my term. For my committee meeting, we will be brainstorming ideas for the last mentor mentee hangout.

What I wish to accomplish by the end of my term as Projects Coordinator is a consistent continuation of Hands on Science and Animal Shelter throughout the semester. At my committee meetings, I will do more mini service events and will be planning for one more music special for Chaparral House.

appointed board By the end of my term, I’d like to be able to say that I helped make Circle K a good environment and enjoyable place for all the members. I want to work with other organizations and help let the Berkeley Community know more about Circle K and what it does. At my committee meetings I will most likely talk about how we will do what I said earlier.

I have two main goals planned out for this semester. This first is to complete the Winter Single Service project, which will be a PTP/Safety Fair at East Oakland Pride Elementary School. The second is to set up our Spring Single Service event for my successor.

Before my term ends, I hope that everyone has sincerely enjoyed these newsletters that were published throughout the year. I hope to help with a successful transition to my successor and that the rest of my term goes smoothly! I hope that you will come out to help me plan the rest of my newsletters!

I hope to greatly welcome members and help them be better integrated into our club so that they can be enjoy Circle K events, create wonderful memories and help them find a home away from home. I will be hosting committee meetings to help plan fun small scale/big scale socials and brainstorm ideas on how to increase club spirit throughout the upcoming semester!

7

I’ll be making an upcoming events section and a credits page, and I’ll be adding Easter eggs and other fun stuff to be hidden around the website!

chair a project The Chair-a-Project Program has always been a good way to get people interested and involved in one of our many continuous service projects. Being a chair is a big responsibility since you lead the other volunteers at the event, whether you’re doing rad science experiments with kids or overseeing clean up duties at St. Mark’s. Chairing also involves writing presentable yet fun emails to spice up events to those who signed up for it! I hope you first-time chairs enjoyed your little reward from me! what is kiwanis family? While Circle K is a great organization on its own, the work we do is augmented by our relations with the Kiwanis Family. The Kiwanis Family is comprised of the various service leadership programs sponsored by Kiwanis International, including Key Club and Circle K. In the Berkeley area, Berkeley Kiwanis spo nsors UC Berkeley Circle K, Berkeley High Key Club, and Oakland Technical High School Key Club. Our membership in this family provides us benefits like the opportunity to interact closely with adults of wide ranging occupations, the opportunity to guide those younger than us, and the opportunity to learn from each other.
