2015 PARENT & FAMILY UC Blue Ash College
Dear Parent & Family of our Prized UCBA Student, We’re so pleased that your child is our student at UC Blue Ash College! We want each student to be wildly successful here and graduate. My team and faculty leaders recently put our collective wisdom to use to create our top 10 tips for students to be successful. If students follow them, they’ll be glad they did! Remember: your student’s graduation begins today—their current habits and behaviors make it happen. I’ve listed the tips that we provided your child below with some special notes to you, the parents, about how you might help them to follow the tips. As a parent of three children, I understand how integral your support and encouragement will continue to be in your student’s success. Thanks for your continued support of your student and our college! Best Wishes! Dean Cady Short-Thompson, PhD
Top 10 Tips for Student Success G
Graduate.
Focus on your end goal; your journey starts today!
U
A
Review each syllabus, check UC email, and check Blackboard every day.
A
It’s vital. You miss a lot when you miss class.
Deadlines matter.
Know them, prepare for them, and always meet them. Students lose points and fail because they do not meet deadlines. Communicate with your child about what is due and help them to get ahead of deadlines in their work and always meet deadlines.
Always be on time.
It’s a great habit to develop for school and your career. Encourage your child to manage time, sleep, health and work in a way that will help them to be punctual. Encourage them to come to campus long before class starts to ensure that traffic, shuttle delays or other issues won’t make them late.
Attend your classes.
Not attending class is like paying for groceries and leaving them at the store – it’s a waste of money and only hurts the student. 80% of life is showing up – help your child to understand that perfect attendance will help them to thrive in college and life.
D
The more time spent at the college using these support services, the better your child will do and the more they’ll enjoy their college education. We are here to help students and should be sought out regularly. Your child should go before he/she is having trouble. We facilitate learning and success. Encourage your child to be preventative and get help.
Read.
Communicating to your child is a challenge for us since many do not read what we send them – and there is important information about problems, issues, financial aid and more. Encourage them to read and know what is being sent to them.
I
Free tutoring services, One Stop, Academic Advising, Student Life, and more.
Help your child to understand that every assignment and action will ultimately impact progress to graduation. Every step and every point matter.
R
Use our resources early and often.
T
Talk to your professors.
Ask questions, absorb their knowledge, and build relationships. Encourage your child to get to know the professor and always ask questions – inside or outside of class – if they don’t understand something or if they want to know more. It is the faculty’s job and joy to teach and engage students. If your child has a problem in class, tell them to speak to the professor or, if appropriate, the department head. The Dean’s Office can tell your child who the department head is for each department and professor.
Identify your strengths and passions.
Select your major and career based on them. Sometimes well-meaning parents will select majors and careers for students. Your child needs to identify, decide upon and follow his/her own academic path. Greater success, confidence and happiness will result. Let them choose and support them in this first major life decision.
O
Own your education.
Make learning your top priority and be accountable. Be prepared and participate. Help students to prioritize their college education over working or other activities as much as possible. Understandably, students often have to work; however, being a full-time student and nearly a full-time employee is detrimental to academic success. Ideally, students should work no more than 20 hours/week during the academic year. Help your child to learn and know how to advocate for herself/himself if help is needed. Learning advocacy is an important skill for each student.
N Now is your time.
Determine your future. Pursue your dreams actively. Encourage your child to dive into and love college. You matter to them and your support of your child is essential.

We make it possible with
Scholarships Financial obstacles are the #1 reason students fail to finish college, and we are committed to eliminating those challenges. We offer dozens of scholarships each year for students based on academic achievement, financial need and specific departmental requirements. Please encourage your student to apply for these scholarships – they can go a long way to helping students achieve their goals!
Don’t Miss the Application Deadlines The fall scholarship application is available in November and provides scholarship awards for the upcoming spring and summer semesters. The spring scholarship application is available in January and will provide scholarship awards for the upcoming academic year. ucblueash.edu/scholarships

Make the grade with
Exam Prep Exams are just around the corner – help your student start preparing to avoid the stress that comes with last-minute cramming.
Organize study groups. Plan regular study sessions with classmates, with dedicated time focused on specific topics.
Here are a few tips to get them started in the right direction:
Stay organized. Take quality notes in class, and organize those notes to stay on track.
Plan enough time to study. Start studying now, a little each day. Allow time to review materials several times.
Seek help. Talk with your professor now if you have questions about material covered. If you need extra help, visit the academic labs on campus or the Study Skills Center for more help on exam preparation.
