SHINE Shem Nyachieo (Applied Graphic Communication, 2013) knows a bit about getting involved. As a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, he routinely volunteers throughout the community at charity organizations like Matthew 25 Ministries in Blue Ash. On campus, he’s an active member of Student Government and serves as a peer mentor* to incoming students. Membership in the student chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Artists gives him a head start on professional networking, and involvement in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars on UC’s Clifton campus keeps him connected on a larger scale. “Involvement and presence is key to a better community. My advice? Get involved and see where it takes you!”

change JUDGEMENTS Josh Goode (Pre-Law, 1997) was not the typical college student. Home-schooled as a child, he was so bright by the age of 10 that his parents decided he needed more advanced teaching. UC Blue Ash was the place for him. “The environment on campus was very welcoming – from students and professors alike. On campus, there are so many different types of people; I was just another part of the great diversity that exists.” Josh went on to graduate by age 16 and completed his education at UC’s College of Law. He’s served as a magistrate in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court and now owns his own law firm in Cincinnati. “I think people would be surprised to learn about the wide variety of courses and majors at UC Blue Ash. No matter what your ambition, there is a program that will give you a great education and preparation for your career.”

BRING THE PAST TO LIFE Fulbright Scholar and History professor, Timothy Forest, spent nine months living in France conducting research in French archives that will be the basis for a new book on immigration studies and new courses in the college’s European History program. “I really enjoy gaining a new perspective for my research and my teaching,” he said. “I find that it’s one thing to read about history and culture, it’s another to see it firsthand.” 14

Physics professor Cenalo Vaz conducts research in the field of gravitational collapse and black hole radiation. He has presented his research at international conferences in India, Japan, Germany, and the U.S. Dr. Vaz has also written three full-length texts on Electrodynamics, Mechanics and Statistical Mechanics for the graduate level. “I have taught in several places around the world and I enjoy teaching at UC Blue Ash. dreamBIGGER Eunha Chung (Graphic Design, ‘10) traveled from South Korea with her son Jayu to offer him an American education. What she found was a new beginning for herself. While she had been a science teacher in Korea, Eunha was always drawn to art and its connection with the natural world.
“UC Blue Ash gave me the opportunity to develop a whole new side of myself as an artist and graphic designer. Because the curriculum was strong, and the professors gave me constant attention and focus, I was able to follow my passions in design.”
Today, Eunha splits her time between her studios in California and Korea, where she focuses on creating artwork in Sci-Art – a unique combination of Science and Art.
Designing for a World Stage When the World Choir Games came to Cincinnati in 2012, Eunha’s design for a unique trophy was selected to represent the event. Her design incorporates elegant lines inspired by the Ohio River, leading to the opening of the vase which echoes singing mouths of the choir members, with their individual voices coming together in a single harmony. The trophy was produced by world-famous Rookwood pottery in Cincinnati. “My father is a traditional porcelain artist in Korea, and my husband is a percussionist and music director. I couldn’t resist the urge to participate in the trophy competition because my life had these two huge connections to music and art.”

radiate CHANGE Samantha Rahe (Radiologic Technology, 2012) dreams of putting her compassion for others into action as a Radiologic Technologist – working toward improving radiology in developing countries. She’s well on her way. As part of a service-learning class, Samantha traveled to Guadeloupe, where she studied the island’s social and economic issues, immersed herself in the language and culture, and volunteered with local schoolchildren.
“In Guadeloupe, it was so powerful to experience, first-hand, the beauty of the island against the ugliness of social issues that permeate its people. I could never have learned these things from a textbook.” The experience was a life-changing one for Samantha, who had never before traveled out of the country. “One of the greatest things I took from the people I was with was that change is constantly occurring, that we as humans have the capacity and talent to change ourselves, others, the environment, false perceptions, beliefs, opinions and notions.”

stretch FARTHER Joy Jovet (Nursing, 2013) knows a thing or two about flexibility. As a professional dancer and a soloist for the Cincinnati Ballet, she worked tirelessly to develop her technique and keep up with the demanding schedule of nightly performances.
“When I made it as a professional dancer, I felt my life’s goal had come true. Millions of little girls dream of being a prima ballerina. And for me, that dream was an exciting reality. ” But dreams don’t always last forever. Injuries took a toll on her dancing career, and eventually, Joy knew her days as a professional ballerina were over.
“Realizing that my career was over was difficult. But I knew this was an opportunity to stretch beyond what I thought I was capable of – a chance to reach new heights. ” So she traded in her toe shoes for some more sensible footwear as she embarked on her calling to become a nurse. The flexibility and support that she received in the Nursing program made all the difference. “I may not have completed my journey if it wasn’t for the support of my nursing professors and the financial support of the Elinor L. Willet Scholarship.”

A bachelor’s degree in education is the minimum educational requirement for entering the teaching profession. These programs provide the first two years toward completion of the corresponding bachelor’s degree at the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH).** Students must be admitted into the CECH cohort through a selective admissions process for completion of the bachelor’s degree and teacher licensure.
These one-year programs (non-degree) provide the first year of the baccalaureate program at the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH). Students completing the first year must apply to and be accepted into the program at CECH.
