SAVE-THE-DATE United Comes to You hits the ground running in 2016! Texas, Florida, Mid-Atlantic, Bahamas, Illinois – mark your calendars for these not to be missed encounters as we come together to lift HIM up.

Then, we will gather together in New York to Celebrate United! Stay connected with us on social media for the latest information.

Convocation 2015 Reflections Anniversaries, birthdays, reunions, weddings and receptions are the type of events that seem to bring immense joy in their celebration. If there were a single event that bundled all that was the best of these events, we would have to call it HOLY CONVOCATION. Of course, it is a reunion when we get to all come together from far and near to be with one another. The excitement of an anniversary or birthday is matched by national appointments and promotions. The pomp of a wedding procession is bested by that of the entrance of the tiers of leadership on Official Day. And there is no more festive atmosphere than that of the praise breaks that come when no one can keep their seat. Even the musicians have to pause from playing just to dance a bit! There is so much that takes place both out front and behind the scenes that one scarcely knows where to begin. So the beginning. I think I want to start by thanking the advance teams that arrived as early as Sunday to finalize all preparations to receive us. It really is a massive undertaking to coordinate so many areas, volunteers, space, finances, events and so much more.

This year the theme was “The Encounter” and what an awesome encounter it was. The first “encounter” is always with our extended families and friends. When Florida hooks up with New York or when Delaware and Texas come together there is always something marvelous that happens. One of the things that makes United’s events so special is that we really are one big family. The months of separation have done nothing to quell the boisterous blessing that is seeing one another. The children connect with their friends. My wife, Lady Kim gets to hug and love on the women she has been praying with and I get to hang with my brothers and sisters. I think the only stressful thing about the reconnecting is there aren’t enough meals in the week for me to eat with everyone I have missed!

The next “encounter” occurs in the classroom. There is always a rich offering of learning opportunities. From ministry and managing mayhem to mastering your own mind, no one has to leave without more knowledge and understanding. The classroom ranks high on the list because it is the one area where I can be disconnected from my feelings and given foundation that helps me implement real change with real solutions when I get back home. These are not just alternate preaching sessions, although we can get a little excited. While every encounter is significant, there is no encounter more unique and more glorious than what occurs in the sanctuary. Dynamic preaching, ecstatic singing and worship and the joyous shouts of praise to our God are signature elements of this encounter. Every year, every part of me is ministered to and refreshed. Convocation is my Jerusalem! God has determined to meet us when we gather. He does every time. This year as always, our Presiding Bishop gave the clarion call that we should “ride the wind” of God’s power in our lives. I’ve been airborne ever since!

It has been a few weeks now since we gathered in Atlanta for our 26th Holy Convocation but the residue of the encounter remains heavy. I can only hope and prepare for all that this next cycle can bring into our lives.
