Letter From The Editor Grace and Peace be unto you UNITED, We thank God for the pulling down of strongholds in the lives of His people as He continues to take us from glory to glory. May He grant us the grace to trust Him more, and enjoy the process. Greater is here UNITED! Let us connect and remain steadfast together across this awesome body of believers. We are better together! Our National Holy Convocation is quickly approaching and we encourage you to get registered, preorder your t-shirts, book your ticket, and meet us in Atlanta, GA for three days of power packed worship, teaching, preaching and fellowship. We will have more details coming soon to better prepare you for this highly anticipated #UNITEDencounter! Let us continue to pray for our leaders as Pastor Terry Hill, Jr. continues our conversation this month about the wounded among us in the Emotional Abuse of Leadership, Pt. 2. Be encouraged UNITED, and above all, continue to stand. Be blessed as you enjoy the highlights of what is going on around the world of UNITED! In His Service, Annette Parkins Editor www.unitedcovenantchurches.org
Emotional Abuse of Leadership Dealing with Sheep Bites, Part 2 by Rev. Terry L. Hill, Jr. In the last installment we brought light to the fact that there really is a dilemma in the fact that not all of the abuse we have seen in the church is done on the part of leadership. However, many times, leadership is the victim of the abuse. Only a leader can understand how truly devastating it is to be attacked and/or abused by the very people who you not only have been commanded to love by also committed to serve. Not only does the leader have to contend with the hurt they have received but they also have to try and fend for those who support them and also have to withstand the attack on their loved ones. In the local church, rather, every local church there is an individual or group who is hostile towards leadership. They feel it is their responsibility to criticize, harass, bully or flat out discourage their leader. Some do so from twisted motives cloaked in some pseudo love or humble premise. It is these individuals that are responsible for the following type of disheartening statistics: •
1600 pastors leave the ministry each month
•
90% of pastors say the hardest thing about ministry is dealing with uncooperative people
•
70% of pastors feel grossly underpaid
•
80% of pastors say their ministry has had negative impact on their children
•
65% of pastors have thought recently about giving up ministry
•
80% of Pastors wives feel left out and unappreciated by the church
•
Over 50% have a serious conflict with a church member at least once a month
With these kind of things happening it is no wonder that the pastorate is dwindling. And even for those who have not left the ministry or church leadership in general, it is equally saddening that they remain in their positions but perform their tasks without inspiration, motivation and feeling. They are the working wounded.
The problem is that most people do not have a real understanding of the nature of spiritual leadership. Unlike secular leadership, spiritual leaders are not pursuing their own goals, ideals or agendas. At least not genuine spiritual leaders. As a matter of fact, I have found that many times the sheep that do bite do so out of fear that they are going to be treated as they were in some prior experience that may not be the fault of their current leader. Unfortunately, God’s leaders have always been mistreated. Name any one of the Old Testament prophets or the New Testament apostles and you will recall they suffered abuse. Even Jesus had to endure ridicule and mistreatment. Scripture reminds us that “he came unto his own and they received him not.” Fortunately for us we may adopt our savior’s mindset. Do not allow sheep bites to keep you from giving the care, service and love that you have been called to give. Remember that if we follow the Jesus motif, our suffering with him will allow us to reign with him. We are not responsible for how we are treated rather for how we treat others in return. Even if the sheep provide our pain, remember that the Lord has our reward. And according to Hebrews 6:10, “God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do.” Stay strong Shepherd! God has got you!
