Mona Shattell, an internationally recognized mental health and psychiatric nursing expert, joined UCF at the start of 2021/2022. Dr. Shattell is the chair of the Department of Nursing Systems and the Hugh F. and Jeannette G. McKean Endowed Chair.
An interdisciplinary team from UCF, including the College of Nursing’s Desiree Díaz, received a $1.5 million federal grant to develop a virtual program to improve the mental health of healthcare providers.
UCF was awarded $300,000 from the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation to support eight interdisciplinary healthcare research projects, including social determinants of health, pain management, simulation and more.

To help other families like hers, Michelle Tall ’17MSN, ’21PhD developed Medilepsy – an app that proved effective in a study in helping adolescents with epilepsy and their caregivers selfmanage the chronic disease.
Suzanne Hyer ’19PhD received NIH funding to study the role of social determinants of health on pregnancy weight gain and infant birth weight among Black women.

Thanks to the generosity of Roslyn and Jody Burttram, DNP students have a new ultrasound machine. “It’s not just another piece of equipment or technology,” says Assistant Professor Frank Guido-Sanz. “It’s something that is essential to the core of our curriculum, and it pays off in so many ways ... but most importantly, in patient outcomes and safety.”
In summer 2022, UCF was awarded transformational funding to address the nursing shortage. The investment includes $29 million to build a new state-of-the-art building for the College of Nursing at the UCF Academic Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona.
