OUR MISSION To prepare nurse leaders and patient advocates through excellence in education, research and service.
MESSAGE FROM
THE DEAN Through innovation and creativity, nurse scientists have a real opportunity to improve patient care and outcomes.
N
o other discipline is at the patient’s bedside 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is nurses that deliver interventions and treatments, collaborating across the healthcare team, to care for the patient. However, much of the evidence needed for today’s evidence-based practice is still
emerging. That’s why it is important to ask, “Is there a better way to do something?” and to question the status quo to make scientific discoveries, disprove theories and validate practices. In my decades of research, I have learned that it is often the little things that make the biggest difference, such as mouth care in preventing pneumonia in ventilated patients, and the turning and positioning of critically ill patients to prevent complications. To continue to foster innovation, we need to look at things differently and collaborate across disciplines through team science. At the College of Nursing, for example, Endowed Chair and computer scientist Dr. Gregory Welch is working with acute care nurse practitioner and Assistant Professor Dr. Frank Guido-Sanz on wound simulations to improve trauma care (see p. 10). While our aging expert Dr. Ladda Thiamwong has collaborated with kinesiology and engineering to use sensors to assess fall risk and prevent this leading cause of injury in older adults. For nursing to survive as a discipline, we need more scientists. In the U.S., the statistics are staggering. A projected one-third of nursing faculty are expected to retire by 2025, while there has been an eight-year decline in PhD program enrollment. We need to mentor the next generation of nurse scientists. That’s why we are fostering a younger generation who can spend more time in a research career with our BSN to PhD program (see p. 20), and actively secure research funding, fellowships and scholarship opportunities to support doctoral students. As a profession, and community of Knight nurses, we need to stay curious – to continue to ask questions, and find the answers. The health of our community and future of nursing depends on it. you know, but it is so important to find time to … think.” Put another way, the kind of creativity that leads to innovation that makes a big impact, comes from giving the brain time to cook an idea. Welch should know. Since arriving in 2011, he’s led or co-led 10 ideas or products that have eventually been granted patents and which the UCF Technology Transfer Office is working to license to companies.
“Then I thought about FaceTime and what a wonderful tool we have to communicate, but still, there is a lack of touch and that is so powerful for patients and families.” He realized maybe he could change that. In collaboration with Computer Science Associate Professor Ryan McMahn and others, he developed ideas for Low Latency Tactile Telepresence, for which UCF received

UCF’s Technology Transfer Office is now looking for companies that may want to license this technology, continue some research and development, and eventually bring it to market. “We work closely with our innovators to translate promising solutions into products that impact society and improve healthcare,” said Tech Transfer Director Svetlana Shtrom. “It’s one way we translate research and make a difference in our communities and across the globe.”

Develop the Idea
Identify an Opportunity From working at the bedside, nurses identify opportunities to improve patient care. While in a lab, computer scientists and engineers identify new technology opportunities.
Collaborate on an Idea An idea forms from crossdiscipline interactions where nurses share needs (top-down thinking) and technology experts share tools that may help (bottom-up thinking).
Collaboration continues as scientists, engineers and nursing experts bring the idea to life, where it evolves from drawings to prototypes, to testing.
Patent and Pitch Innovation Work with technology transfer and legal teams to patent the invention, and present to industries and partners to license the technology and bring it to market.
EXPERTISE AND COLLABORATION For Assistant Professor Frank Guido-Sanz, practical experience and collaboration is the way to get an idea to the place where it can make a difference for patients. A member of the National Disaster Medical System Trauma Critical Care Team, GuidoSanz has collaborated with Welch on several projects that have led to two patents for UCF. The patents are for a simulator that teaches healthcare providers how to treat wounds. Wounds, historically, are created in training scenarios using moulage (molds and makeup) on manikins, which has limitations. “This new wound technology allows us to improve training by making scenarios more realistic,” said Guido-Sanz, who also works as an acute care nurse practitioner at a Miami hospital. USING SIMULATION TO ADDRESS MATERNAL AND NEWBORN HEALTH DISPARITIES RESEARCH GRANT HELPS STUDENTS BECOME CULTURALLY COMPETENT PROVIDERS
T
he statistics are staggering. In the U.S., Black, American Indian, and Alaska Native women are two to three times
more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes compared to white women. According to the CDC, two-thirds of pregnancyrelated deaths are preventable. Health disparities extend to newborns. Infants of non-Hispanic Black women have the highest mortality rate – more than double the rate for non-Hispanic white women. Thanks to a research grant from Laerdal Medical and two new high-fidelity manikins, Associate Professor Desiree Díaz worked with UCF nursing faculty and student researchers to create simulation-based learning experiences to improve the outcomes for these mothers and their infants. Studies have shown that a well-designed simulation can build upon information from an academic setting and transform care at the bedside. “It starts by bringing awareness to our nursing students, creating early recognition of potentially fatal healthcare complications and social determinants of health in ethnically diverse populations, to save lives of moms and babies,” said Díaz.

Considering External Factors in Maternal Care Díaz consulted with Associate Dean of Research Carmen Giurgescu, a certified women’s health nurse practitioner, to create realistic simulated learning scenarios to explore healthcare disparities for Black women and infants.

assessment for, and educate “Kendra” on, postpartum blues and depression. “Healthcare disparities is bringing awareness to the issues that are often not spoken,” said Díaz. “Students must first understand how external factors affect the internal aspect of a patient to ultimately provide more culturally competent care.” Those factors are social and environmental, such as racial discrimination and living in disadvantaged neighborhoods, which are related to a higher risk for preterm birth and pregnancy complications for Black women.
Addressing Knowledge Gap in Newborn Distress A group of three undergraduate student researchers worked with Díaz to develop a simulation to address infant mortality and health disparities. RESEARCH
AT 26, EMERY is nearly two decades younger than the average nursing PhD graduate – and that’s a good thing. Emery is the first of four students in the college’s innovative BSN to PhD program, which seeks to create a younger generation of researchers who will have more time in their careers to contribute to nursing science.
“The future is bright for nursing research, with team science, but we need to have the scientists like Kim to do it,” said Dean Sole.

ENSURING A BRIGHT FUTURE
While this past year has been filled with many challenges, I am hopeful. Advances in health science have provided protection from COVID-19. Innovative teaching methods using simulation are helping address healthcare disparities (see p. 16). Research from UCF faculty and nursing students are improving patient care. While UCF has received transformational funding, there is still great need at the college

level. In fact, this last year the college awarded $30,000 in emergency funding – the most ever. Thanks to the Gertrude Skelly Charitable Foundation, Carrie Daanen ’92 and the Vyas family, our students facing financial hardships have been able to stay in school to pursue their dream and care for our communities as Knight nurses. There are also many more healthcare challenges to address by our faculty experts and highachieving students. More innovations to be made. More valuable research to be conducted. With your help, we will continue to “Charge On!” and change lives in Central Florida and

Charge On! as a #KnightNurse
GREETINGS FELLOW KNIGHT NURSES It is my honor to serve you, my fellow Knight nurses, these next two years as the Alumni Chapter Board Chair. As a dual alumna, faculty member and undergraduate clinical coordinator, my passion for UCF and Knight nurses runs deep.
JOIN A COMMITTEE
It began in my formative years. My undergraduate experience not only equipped me with the knowledge and skills to be successful in my nursing career, but welcomed me into a community of peers and leaders that have provided – and continue to provide – encouragement and friendship. Dean Sole said recently at our recognition ceremony that, “Now, more

than ever, the world needs more Knight nurses.” I also believe that now, more than ever, Knight nurses need one another as we continue to navigate this extremely challenging time in our profession. As an alumni member, you are not alone. Whether you are among our 955 recent graduates (welcome and congratulations!) or among the 12,500+
