Guest lecturers Professor emeritus Alex Horne spent 32 years as an Ecological Engineer in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. His current work is providing solutions for controversial water supply and pollution problems in fresh and salty water worldwide. He wrote the popular undergraduate textbook, Limnology (the study of lakes, streams, and estuaries). This circumnavigation of Newfoundland will provide an intimate look at the sea surrounding the island. Prof. Horne will combine oceanography with fishing theory to tell the tragic history of the New England codfish industry and compare it with the ongoing tuna fishing disaster. He will also discuss the crisis of the world’s freshwater shortage and a new and innovative solution to global warming. Captain Alfred S. McLaren, U.S. Navy (Ret.), Ph.D., is a world-class polar and deep sea explorer and scientist. He is a President Emeritus of The Explorers Club, and recipient of its Lowell Thomas Medal for Ocean Exploration. He is also a Director of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M and Director and Senior Pilot of Sub Aviator Systems LLC’s revolutionary new Super Aviator submersible. Capt. McLaren is a veteran of more than 20 Cold War submarine operations, and his awards as a Cold War submarine captain include the Distinguished Service Medal and two Legions of Merit. Capt. McLaren is a very popular and frequent lecturer on Arctic trips, having lectured on more than a dozen. With graduate degrees from Cambridge University and the University of Colorado, his area of scientific research is the role of the Polar Regions in global climate change.

Thursday, June 3 BATTLE HARBOUR | RED BAY, Labrador Arrive at Battle Harbour. Founded in 1759, it prospered from fishing and maritime activities, becoming Labrador’s capital in 1848. As the fishing industry faded, so did the town’s fortunes, when it was abandoned in the 1960s. Declared a national historic site, it is now under the care of the Battle Harbour Historic Trust, which has undertaken the restoration of historic buildings. Tour the island and sail to Red Bay on Labrador’s mainland. Explore Red Bay, established 400 years ago by Basque settlers and once known as the world’s whaling capital, learning about its fishing and maritime traditions. (B, L, D) n

Friday, June 4 BONNE BAY for GROS MORNE NATIONAL PARK, Newfoundland Gros Morne National Park’s unique geology, with rocks dating from the Precambrian, Cambrian, and Ordovician periods, affirmed the theory of plate tectonics. Gros Morne also contains some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. Notice the park’s lush coastline, called Green Gardens. Also visit the barren Tablelands.
