Davin Blekeberg, a second-year International Economics major, was always a handyman. What he didn’t know was that there was a job at UCLA Recreation for people like him. As soon as he found out about Rec Tech, he applied and got a job making sure UCLA Recreation facilities run smoothly. Since joining, he says, “I've gained a lot of practical knowledge for working with hand tools, power tools, etc., as well as a great sense of teamwork. Rec Techs almost always work in groups, so you approach problems together. I will never look at gym equipment the same way again after helping to maintain the John Wooden Center!”

After graduating from UCLA with a B.A. in Communications, Tiffany Li continued working at the Strength and Conditioning Zone and FITWELL Services Desk in the John Wooden Center for over six years. Now earning her graduate degree at the UCLA School of Nursing, she reflects back on how her experience working at UCLA Recreation has helped her get to where she is today. “I've learned to be a more effective communicator as well as being able to connect with people on a more personal level,” she says. “Working as a manager, you have to think critically and resolve day-to-day challenges while striving to shape and uphold a broader mission of excellence and leadership.” Tiffany continues to work at UCLA Recreation part-time and knows that the experience she gains here will benefit her for a lifetime.

Help Others

Build Relationships

After being involved with a tutoring program located at the Student Activities Center (SAC), Dante Cruz, a fourth-year History and Chicana/o Studies double major and Latin American Studies minor, thought he might as well get a job at the SAC since he spent so much time there. He was impressed with the variety of people that came through the SAC each day. “I love learning to help the different individuals that come through with different backgrounds, different experiences, different ages, and different opinions,” he said. “It’s how we grow.” Dante knows this experience will help him as he aspires to enter law school in order to help effect positive changes for underprivileged immigrant students.

Amanda Williams, a fourth-year Psychology major, has worked as a lifeguard at UCLA Recreation for more than three years. She had previous experience as a lifeguard and was happy to use her skills to find a job at UCLA. Not only does she enjoy growing professionally on the job, but she enjoys training and helping others as well. She says, “I think that what I have learned the most through working for UCLA is patience and professionalism … I've been put in so many situations that have tested my patience to the absolute limit, and I have been able to handle them. As a head lifeguard, newer guards come to me for information and help, so I have learned to take a leadership role and help the others who look to me for advice."

It’s fitting that fifth-year Sociology major JaToya Johnson got her job at the Membership Desk through a friend. JaToya’s friendliness and cheerfulness is evident to everyone who comes by the desk with assorted questions about UCLA Recreation and its services. She’s stayed with her job since the summer of 2005 because she’s a self-described “peopleoriented person” and enjoys assisting others. Because of her job with customer service, she’s seen the benefit of constant interaction with people. JaToya has also learned through the years how to be a calming influence on everyone around her and also how to multitask. “There’s a lot of interesting people I meet,” she laughs. “I do my best to help them leave happy and with a smile. Patience is a virtue. Cherish it!”

For Luke Campbell, people and friendships have always been a priority. In fact, Luke, a fourth-year Design | Media Arts major and French minor who’s also president of Bruin Harmony, got his current job working as a designer for UCLA Recreation through a friend. Luke explained, “I decided to take up the offer because I was looking for a job, and I needed more experience in the design world.” Luke has found that the community at UCLA Recreation is fun and exciting. He smiles, “Workers get perks all the time, and my colleagues are fun to work with! The location is ideal too—it's central and Wooden provides an energetic buzz pretty much 24/7.”

Developing Leaders at UCLA Recreation UCLA Recreation offers five different leadership training programs: Outdoor Leadership Training, Fitness Leadership Program, Lifeguard Training, Competitive Sports Executive Council, and Challenge Course Facilitator. Each program is designed to develop student-leaders with the technical skills and safety protocols needed to perform their jobs with excellence. All of our Personal Fitness trainers, Group Exercise leaders, Outdoor Adventure guides, Challenge Course facilitators, and lifeguards have undergone these competitive programs, and you can too! Instructor Tiffany Li teaches a class for the Fitness Leadership Program.

UCLA Recreation Means

Green

UCLA Recreation is proud to team up with other departments on campus to promote a healthier and more environmentally friendly UCLA. FITWELL’s I Heart Walking week was supported by UCLA Health Systems and UCLA Transportation, which develops alternative ways of transportation for the UCLA community, including vanpools and discounted bus passes. UCLA Recreation’s Student Leadership Employee Advisory Council (SLEAC) recently met up with Nurit Katz, UCLA's Sustainability Coordinator, to expand ways in which UCLA Recreation could support sustainability efforts. SLEAC developed this year’s first Kick Off Your Shoes Event, during which participants donated old pairs of shoes to those in need or for recycling into synthetic turfs.

This past year, Women’s Club Softball learned about the foundation and wanted to join in the fight against breast cancer. “Out of all of the possible causes, this one seemed to stand out because we felt it would unite clubs as well as shed light on a horrible disease. We hoped that by teams having to wear pink, they would feel united and work together for a cure,” says Diana Gonzalez, a fourth-year Sociology and Women’s Studies double major.

“This experience was wonderful because it was very gratifying seeing all our planning and commitment pay off. There was very good attendance and we received more cans than we had expected, and it was very nice to donate a small but significant amount to help find the cure,” says Diana.

The event ran for one day in October, and each individual had to donate three cans of food to the LA Food Bank or $5 to help find the cure. The team quickly spread the word by emailing the other

Adaptive Programs and Competitive Sports Team Up for Wheelchair Basketball League UCLA Recreation Adaptive Programs has unleashed its new Wheelchair Basketball program, providing an opportunity for students with mobility impairments and students who are able-bodied to enjoy playing basketball together. Since sport-specific wheelchairs can cost up to $5,000 each, Adaptive Programs has invested in several multi-sport wheelchairs, which can be used for a variety of sports. “This provides participants with the opportunity to play sports in a chair that is athletic and maneuverable instead of using their everyday chair,” says Jamie Hoffman, Adaptive Recreation and Swim Program Coordinator. With the onset of open-gym wheelchair basketball and the new league (see left), Jamie is looking forward to seeing students just having fun and playing basketball with their friends. “It will also provide an opportunity for experiential education through playing a sport utilizing a sports wheelchair,” she says.

Participants for these activities will be notified via email the day after the registration period ends with event details. Please be sure to check your email for important information. Failure to do so may result in your inability to participate, and a refund will not be provided.

Single: Fraternity, Independent - Men, Independent/ORL - Women, ORL - Men, Sorority A representative must attend the manager’s meeting for these activities. Failure to have a representative at this meeting will result in the team being ineligible to schedule for games, unless a $15 missed-meeting fee is paid by noon on the day after the manager's meeting. A refund will not be provided to teams that do not attend the manager’s meeting and are unable to schedule!

Accept the Challenge Have you ever wanted to become a fearless leader, taking groups of people through exciting adventures without ever leaving the UCLA campus? Consider taking Challenge Course 101, a course for all the thrill seekers looking for ways to increase their leadership and communication skills and have flexible, fun jobs! Challenge Course 101 is a two-day program that takes place this quarter on April 18-19. It is designed to teach students how to facilitate and teach various individuals and groups, from residence halls to student organizations, how to navigate the Challenge Course located at the Sunset Canyon Recreational Center. During the first day of Challenge Course 101, the new recruits bond and learn all together. Those who survive and enjoy what they've done move on to the second day, during which returning student staff employees join the new recruits and come alongside them. “It’s really a mentor relationship,” says Brian Pritchard, Challenge Course Supervisor. “New recruits also have to shadow their mentor. Under supervision, they learn how to lead, and one day they’ll be the ones teaching the newest student staff.” The training continues throughout the rest of the quarter with other special training days set aside. The learning and excitement never stop. Contact: If you're interested in the Challenge Course, email Brian Pritchard at oac@recreation.ucla.edu.

Engineers Go Kayaking Who says engineers don’t know how to have fun? Recently, Anna Hoang went kayaking at the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center with her sisters in Phi Sigma Rho, a society for women in engineering and engineering technology. The group had a blast, complete with screaming and laughter. They raced each other, purposely took dives into the water, and even spotted the cruise ship where they had their most recent formal.

marina Aquatic Center

Experience of a Lifetime

Anna explained, "I choose to rent kayaks at the MAC as a bonding activity because many members in my sorority love sunshine, the ocean, and the outdoors."

It’s the image that epitomizes Southern California: a clear blue sky, palm trees swaying, and a giant wave nearly enveloping a carefree person smiling on a board. Isn’t it time that you lived your dreams? Come on down to the Marina Aquatic Center (MAC) and take a surfing class. There are very few colleges in the United States that are able to offer surfing classes to their students, and UCLA is proud to be one of them. Todd Greco, a 2007 alumnus who graduated with a B.A. in Italian and Film and Television, is a surfing instructor with UCLA Recreation. Todd was working at the John Wooden Center when he discovered that surfing classes were offered through UCLA Recreation. He immediately called the MAC to offer his services. Todd enjoys meeting everyone who comes through the MAC and finds being on the water very therapeutic. When asked why students, faculty, and staff should take a surfing class, he responded easily and confidently, “Because it will be the best experience of their life. Guaranteed.”

Volunteer with UCLA Recreation Adaptive Programs UCLA Recreation offers volunteering opportunities with Adaptive Programs, where volunteers can help individuals with disabilities experience recreational activities such as wheelchair basketball or kayaking. Cyndie Niehaus, a third-year Astrophysics major, says, “Volunteering with Adaptive Programs has helped me feel more involved with the community. They really enjoy it, and I like that I can share a common interest with them.” She remembers fondly, “One time we saw a seal poke its head up out of the water, and all the kids went crazy and thought it was the coolest thing ever!” Contact: Email Jamie Hoffman at jhoffman@recreation.ucla.edu to get involved with our Adaptive Programs.
