About IFC: FT Partner for the Transformational Business Awards & Conference 2016 The 2016 Transformational Business Awards mark more than a decade of collaboration between the Financial Times and IFC on global awards initiatives that have had a major impact on the way financial and non-financial institutions approach sustainable investment. These initiatives began in 2006 with the FT/IFC Sustainable Banking Awards, which evolved into the Sustainable Finance Awards in 2011 and the Transformational Business Awards in 2014. IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets. Working with more than 2,000 businesses worldwide, we use our capital, expertise, and influence, to create opportunity where it’s needed most. In FY15, our long-term investments in developing countries rose to nearly $18 billion, helping the private sector play an essential role in the global effort to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity. Overview: Mobilising Sustainable Capital, Technology and Ideas in the New Economy The Financial Times and IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, present the 2016 FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards & Conference, now in its 3rd year. This unique global programme highlights ground-breaking products and services that provide transformative, long-term solutions to key development issues, including the delivery of infrastructure, housing, energy, transportation, food/water, employment, education and health; the use of technology to empower the underserved; and efforts to reverse social and financial exclusion and environmental degradation. Special attention in 2016 is being given to products and services that address major challenges around climate change, particularly in rapidly growing urban areas, with an emphasis on the capital, technology and innovation required for substantive progress. Besides the focus on climate change, which builds on the interest generated by the COP21 Paris Conference, the Awards include both a restructured technology category and a new category designed to highlight issues contained in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Each year, this Achievement in Sustainable Development category will focus on a different SDG or target. For 2016, the focus will be on health, one of the most important SDGs. The Conference The Financial Times and IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank, are organising a major gathering of thought leaders in London on the afternoon of June 9, ahead of the annual dinner honouring the winners of the FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards. In line with the focus of the 2016 Awards, this year’s FT/IFC Transformational Business Conference will build on the momentum generated by COP21 to discuss the major challenges around climate change in developing economies, particularly in urban areas, and the ground-breaking solutions that are addressing those challenges or have the potential to do so. Chaired by a senior FT journalist, the conference will also debate the role the private sector can play in meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular the targets around maternal and infant health, which are a further major focus of the 2016 Awards. Top investors and business leaders will share their insights on these issues with a view to formulating specific action steps. This event will be a significant lead-up to the FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards dinner, which will bring together innovators from around the world whose capital, technology and ideas are contributing to substantive progress.
