Peter Paul Rubens’ “Allegory on Emperor Charles as Ruler of Vast Realms” in Salzburg’s Residenz Gallery.

The so-called chamber of art and wonders in the Dommuseum of Salzburg was created during the second half of the 17th century.

The audience chamber is one of most splendid rooms in the Residenz and is often used as a venue for banquets and receptions.

THE BAROQUE HEART OF THE OLD TOWN The idea has been around for more than 95 years, namely the idea to connect the formerly secret corridors of Salzburg’s archbishops surrounding the cathedral square, thereby creating a museum walkabout to open for the public. The new DomQuartier now makes this plan a reality.

A

rchitecture meets art, secular beauty meets ecclesiastical splendour: 2,000 impressive exhibits spread out over an area of 15,000 square metres span 1,300 years of turbulent history. The realisation of the new DomQuartier means that a historic walkabout through four museums from the 17th century is accessible for the first time in 200 years. The museums in question are the Dommuseum, the long gallery of the Abbey of St. Peter, and the St. Peter Museum, as well as the state rooms of the Residenz with special exhibits from the baroque collection of the Salzburg Museum. The new DomQuartier offers both visitors and locals a completely new perspective. Thus far unknown views of the city and its magnificent squares are now unearthed and can be enjoyed from alternative vantage points. This pleasure was once reserved exclusively for the archbishops and their entourage, but now all Salzburg enthusiasts have access.

Reign History – Art History So where does this baroque flair originate? The opulent splendour of the Papal State in Rome deeply impressed the powerful archbishops, most of all Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. More than 400 years ago the archbishops decided that the diocese of Salzburg’s capital also needed

baroque charm. Money was not an issue – the archbishops had accumulated immense wealth by trading salt, gold, and other resources. They hired the best architects of their time to turn the Old Town into a masterpiece that is now considered a UNESCO world heritage site. Today, Salzburg is the definition of a baroque city north of the Alps. However, the town itself didn’t acknowledge this fact sufficiently. To counteract the situation, the collections of the Baroque Museum, the Salzburg Museum, the Dommuseum, the Residenz Gallery and the Abbey of St. Peter will form the base for a baroque focus in Salzburg.

Eventful Walkabout From 17 May 2014 onwards the Cathedral Square will have a new part to play: located in the centre of the baroque area of Salzburg it will act as the “courtyard” of the new DomQuartier. An admission ticket will allow visitors access to a round tour of both well-known and newly opened architectural and artistic attractions. The new DomQuartier is a cultural project that does not only pay homage to the impressive baroque architecture, but also leads visitors through Salzburg’s art history with all its high-ranking international influences.

Cornelius Obonya returns as the world-famous “Jedermann” in 2014.

The Hofstallgasse is a busy road during the Salzburg Festival. Both guests and media representatives are among the crowd.

SYMBOL OF PEACE TRANSFORMS INTO FESTIVAL The Salzburg Festival was founded after World War I as a symbol for a peaceful gathering in the name of art. 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of war. This year’s schedule of the Salzburg Festival is also focused on the topic of war.

O

peras, plays, and concerts – every year the Salzburg Festival boasts a wide range of music and entertainment events. Richard Strauss, one of the co-founders of the festival, was born 150 years ago. His work “Der Rosenkavalier” in the production of Harry Kupfer will be staged in his honour. This opera – and its underlying melancholic music – has a unique way of capturing the mood before World War I. Another highlight of this year’s Salzburg Festival schedule is the premiere of the opera “Charlotte Salomon” by the composer Marc-André Dalbavie. The production of Luc Bondy, with Marc-André Dalbavie at the conductor’s stand and the Mozarteum Orchestra, bemoans the atrocities of war embodied by the life and death of the Jewish painter. The classic Mozart matinees performed by said Mozarteum Orchestra have some truly fabulous conductors to offer in 2014. The list includes the likes of Manfred Honeck and Ádám Fischer, as well as strong-voiced soloists such as Elisabeth Kulman, Rolando Villazón, and Kristian Bezuidenhout. The Da-Ponte cycle continues with the opera that was the first of its kind at the Salzburg Festival in 1922 and was conducted by Richard Strauss himself: “Don Giovanni”. Mozart’s masterpiece will be staked under the musical guidance of Christoph Eschenbach

in a production by Sven-Eric Bechtolf together with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The audience can witness and hear brilliant opera talent in Giuseppe Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” – Anna Netrebko, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Francesco Meli, and Plácido Domingo. This year, Peter Stein – highly praised for his direction of “Don Carlos” last year – brings an opera by Franz Schubert to the stage of the Salzburg Festival for the first time: “Fierrabras”.

A True Classic “Jedermann”, the ultimate classic of the Salzburg Festival, was staged anew in 2013 and was enthusiastically received by critics and audience alike. Direction and cast remain unchanged in 2014, which means that the Cathedral Square will once again welcome Cornelius Obonya as Jedermann and Brigitte Hobmeier as the socalled “Buhlschaft”. The play “The Forbidden Zone” tells a tale of bravery and compassion during the atrocities of World War I. Katie Mitchell is the director. The play is partially based on the accounts of Mary Borden, a nurse who managed a field hospital on the western front. Two outstanding participants of last year’s YDP – the Young

02 . 03

Directors Project sponsored by Montblanc – return this year to stage the play “Golem”. It is based on the Jewish myth about a soulless creature formed from clay. The audience can expect a unique depiction of the dilemma caused by human heteronomy.

Christianity Meets Islam The Salzburg Festival concerts attempt to bridge the gap between two world religions in 2014. The third part of the “Ouverture spirituelle” consists of traditional Christian works by Claudio Monteverdi, Georg Friedrich Händel, Joseph Haydn, and Anton Bruckner. The oriental – yet unusually beautiful – tones promised by numerous Islamic concerts forms an exciting counterpart. The concert highlights embody the fundamental idea behind the Salzburg Festival: a peaceful gathering of cultures from all over the globe; the common experience of first-class productions that remind us all of how vital human solidarity really is.

The MdM’s two branches within city limits present international contemporary art projects in permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Cafe Unikum Sky – located on the roof of the new University Park in Nonntal – offers spectacular views of the Hohensalzburg fortress and is therefore not merely a hangout for students.

Salzburg’s central station is still in the midst of an extensive renovation project, but some parts already appear in a new light. The building recently received the national Austrian design award.

CLAUDIA JANKA, STEFANIE SPREITZER MUSEUM DER MODERNE, LUIGI CAPUTO, SALZBURG FOUNDATION/WOLFGANG LIENBACHER

These five cucumber sculptures were created by Erwin Wurm as part of “Art Project Salzburg” in 2011 and can now be viewed in Furtwänglerpark in Salzburg’s old town.

MODERN SALZBURG Salzburg is known as a town that values its traditions. Nevertheless, it is also always in touch with the newest trends. This is especially visible in the innovative architecture that characterises numerous parts of the city.

S

alzburg loves to present itself from its traditional side. While exploring the city, however, one can spot a few very modern eye-catchers too. The latest architectural achievement of Mozart’s hometown is the newly renovated central station. The flagship project serves as a symbol for progress and was awarded the “National Design Award” and the “European Steel Design Award 2013” for the successful linkage of historical substance and futuristic design. Serving 2,500 travellers every day, the central station is the most important transport hub of the federal province. A visual highlight that also serves as fire protection is the roof, which is made of an air cushion membrane. These cushions fizzle out in the event of a fire, thereby letting the smoke out of the building. Klaus Kada, the architect, designed the station with an underground passage that connects the Salzburg districts of Schallmoos and Elisabethvorstadt.

The Path to Art Salzburg is home to a truly unique art project, namely the “Walk of Modern Art”. Twelve internationally renowned artists made their original works available and positioned them at selected historical sites in the form of a sculpture trail throughout the city. The works of art, which have become real sightseeing highlights and popular photo opportunities, are freely accessible for everyone. The origin of the project was a co-operation between Initiative Salzburg Foundation and Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V. Bonn, which has been promoting art in public spaces for ten years to further strengthen the status of the world heritage city as a culture metropolis. Upon conclusion of the project, Reinhold Würth has agreed to incorporate the

works of art into his international corporate collection and to initially continue to present them in Salzburg’s public spaces.

Modern Landmark Another of Salzburg’s newer eye-catchers is the modern art museum named Museum der Moderne (MdM). This unique building was built on the steep cliff of the Mönchsberg mountain in 2004 and has been towering above the city and its inhabitants ever since. The entire exterior was clad with local marble from the Untersberg quarries; the structure is defined by vertical joints. The design of the outer facade is a particularly clever detail. Rhythmically set slots stand for certain arias from Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni”, a feature that was made possible by using a special computer system for the very first time. The MdM regularly presents numerous international artists, as well as thematic and monographic exhibitions of art from the 20th and 21st centuries and graphic presentations. The 2,300 square metres also house the Austrian Photographic Gallery, which has accumulated 17,000 exhibits. The MdM never stands still. Sabine Breitwieser was appointed as the manager of this exceptional museum in September 2013.

Progressive Redesign In the south of the city one can find the newly designed swimming centre named AYA Pools, which boasts some truly spectacular architecture. It was elaborately redesigned based on the plans by Salzburg-based architect Ludwig Kofler and now covers 2,000 square metres. The pools within the building are heated by district heating,

solar energy, and energy recovery with the assistance of a 200 square metre solar panel on the roof of the indoor complex. The energyefficient system has its benefits. In the summer months the excess energy is routed to the outdoor pool area, which covers an area of 10,523 square metres and is located right behind the modern indoor pool section. The outdoor section offers a beach volleyball court, a modernised playground, and a slack line area. The remodelled sun terrace, which can be found on the roof of the changing room tract, is seen as a special highlight with a spectacular view of the surrounding mountain and the Old Town.

Newly Robed Education In Nonntal, in close vicinity to the aforementioned AYA Pools, one can find yet another stunning example of modern architecture in Salzburg. The extraordinary 17,000 square metre University Park is transparent, clearly structured, and open. The incoming sunlight is regulated by hundreds of metal slats, while the many columns allow barrier-free access. The centrepieces of the complex are the library and the lecture halls of this sensational institution. A visit to the cafe on the rooftop opens beautiful views of the Hohensalzburg fortress. This venue is highly recommendable, not only for students.

GREEN SALZBURG Salzburg harmoniously combines urban atmosphere and nature. The green areas bring the city to life and act as a symbol for the countless beautiful retreats in and around the town. This is where locals go to recharge their batteries and take a breather when they feel the need to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Salzburg.

T

he Mönchsberg mountain characterises the face of Salzburg; it is located in the middle of the city, but still embedded in a natural landscape. From its summit one can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the Old Town. Idyllic paths through dense beech forests lead from one vantage point to the other. During a leisurely stroll one might even spot rare plants such as the orange-red radiant fire lily, which is considered one of the more exotic native wild flowers. With a bit of luck – and a silent footfall – one may even encounter an owl. The Richterhöhe – Mönchsberg’s highest point – offers a view all the way to Palace Leopoldskron. That’s where passionate fishermen find the adjacent pond, while nature lovers can explore the stunning park surrounding the palace. The Kapuzinerberg mountain is characterised by two special assets. It houses the Kapuziner Convent and its beautiful garden, which is lovingly tended to by the resident monks. Additionally, the mountain is home to a small chamois colony. The little family was started by an inquisitive male specimen, who was not deterred by the urban bustle and decided to settle down on Kapuzinerberg. He may not

have found any conspecifics, but at least he found a natural habitat. Finally, the city administration decided to bring in a female partner. The urban chamois colony has become used to humans and has a very peaceful approach to walkers enjoying the diverse animal and plant life.

Flying high Moving further away from the city, one can find mountain ranges that have an appeal for Alpine sports enthusiasts. The Untersberg majestically stands on the border between Salzburg and Bavaria; sport enthusiasts can reach its summit on foot in a few hours. Those who have a more comfortable approach can conquer the mountain via the cable car. The Gaisberg – characterised by its unmistakable transmission tower – offers a circular hiking route with spectacular views of Salzburg and its surroundings. It also offers a mountain bike trail to the summit and a starting area for paragliding, which guarantees both adrenalin rushes and a breathtaking panoramic view. There’s no need to fly

high all the time though, as one can also find very tempting plains in and around Salzburg. The parks department maintains green areas and forests in the vicinity of Palace Hellbrunn. In the summer months the famous trick fountains provide a certain kick and a stroll through the palace park is equally appealing. The Klessheim Palace, located on the other side of the city in the Wals-Siezenheim district, houses both a casino and a smaller – yet just as beautiful – park area. A charming location for a refreshing dip is the Salzach Lake, which is just outside the city limits. It is a popular bathing spot among the locals, surrounded by untouched nature, biodiversity, and extensive flora. This is precisely the mixture that defines Salzburg – urban bustle meets relaxing green.
