The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am is a 72-hole PGA TOUR golf championship dating back to the 1930s. Founder Bing Crosby gathered a ‘few friends’ to raise money for charity…and to have some fun. The annual 72 hole PGA golf championship tournament where sports, business, and entertainment celebrities are paired with leading golf pros to compete for the Pro-Am purse. The Charity Shoot Out featuring celebrity amateurs playing five holes, and The 3M Charity Challenge, where golf professionals play an elimination game, are part of the fun. The first three days are practice rounds. Foursomes rotate to Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Monterey Peninsula Country Club Shore Course. The infamous ‘cut’ is made on Saturday night and the leading 60 professionals and 25 pro am teams play Pebble Beach on Sunday for the championship. Tournament play begins on Thursday. HELP A MONARCH If you find a Monarch butterfly washed up on the shore after a storm it may still be alive. Lift it out of the damp sand and put it on your sweater, allowing it to dry off. A water color brush is useful for removing sand from its wings. When dry, it will take flight. SOURCE: Monarch Project

Carmel’s Bohemian founders fought to maintain the outdoor mystique and small-town appeal and their efforts are still evident today. The residential district has no sidewalks or street lights, and the beach is unadulterated by commercial development. Homes are known only by name and have no street addresses. Diverse sights and activities await visitors to Carmel who can easily set their own pace taking life as energetically or as leisurely as they desire. Within the village, visitors can relax, unwind and

“Cannery Row in Monterey in California is a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream. Cannery Row is the gathered and scattered, tin and iron and rust and splintered wood, chipped pavement and weedy lots and junk heaps, sardine canneries of corrugated iron, honky tonks, restaurants and whore houses, and little crowded groceries, and laboratories and flophouses.” – John Steinbeck, Cannery Row

FEBRUARY THEATRE PRESENTATIONS ON THE MONTEREY PENINSULA 1-16: Parallel Lives by Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney In the opening scene, two Supreme Beings plan the beginning of the world with the relish of two slightly sadistic suburban wives decorating a living room. Once they’ve decided on the color scheme of the races, a little concerned that white people will feel slighted being such a boring color, they create sex and the sexes. Parallel Lives reexamines the ongoing quest to find parity and love in a contest handicapped by capricious gods—or in this case, goddesses, 8 p.m. Fri.- Sat. 2 p.m. Sun., Stardust Playhouse, 2115 Fremont Avenue, Suite C, Monterey. 831-402-8940, ticketguys.com 831-656-9507. www.stardustplayhousemonterey.com 1-19: Avenue Q This zany, adult-theme musical spoof on Sesame Street involving humans and puppets revolves around a new college grad named Princeton who moves into an apartment in New York City in the only neighborhood he can afford, on Avenue Q. Princeton copes with struggles of real life, (well...real puppets anyway), like sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn. Parents should use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children, 8 p.m. Fri.- Sat., Paper Wing Theatre Company, 320 Hoffman, 831905-5684. www.paperwingtheatreco.com 1-Mar. 3: Legally Blonde, The Musical Pacific Repertory Theatre production. This all singing, all dancing romantic comedy is about knowing who you are and showing what you’ve got! Elle Woods can handle anything. So when her boyfriend, Warner, dumps her she decides to follow him to Harvard Law School and win him back. With some help from new-found friends Paulette, Emmett and her Chihuahua Bruiser, she learns that it’s so much better to be smart. Performances 7:30 p.m. Thur., Fri.-Sat., 2 p.m. Sun., Golden Bough Playhouse, Monte Verde between 8th and 9th, Carmelby-the-Sea. 831-622-0100 or visit: www.pacrep.org 5: Dearest Jane: A One-Man Show Written and Performed by Howard Burnham Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s enduring classic Pride and Prejudice. Salinas Valley ~ he Salinas Valley, one of the largest and most productive agricultural centers in the world, has long been known as the “Salad Bowl of the World.” Now, with the world-class National Steinbeck Center, dedicated to the work of native son John Steinbeck in full operation, Salinas has also commanded a prominent position in local tourism as the heart of “Steinbeck Country.”

Oldtown Salinas Association

Gateway to the Monterey Bay

T

History Small tribes of Native Americans made their home in the Salinas area for centuries before Spanish soldiers and missionaries arrived to build a presidio at Monterey and missions at Carmel, Soledad, San Juan Bautista and the San Antonio Valley. Under Spanish rule, settlements developed around the Central Coast’s missions, but the valley remained largely undeveloped until Mexico overthrew its Spanish rulers and began granting lands in Alta California to Mexican families. Among the ranchos granted to settlers by the Mexican government after Mexico seceded from Spain in 1822 were Sausal and Nacional. Salinas City was born on adjoining parts of both of these ranchos after California had become part of the United States. During the early years of the Gold Rush, James Bryant Hill purchased Rancho Nacional and became a pioneer wheat grower. In 1854, he was named postmaster of the Salinas post office, although there was no town of that name yet. In 1867, Alberto Trescony, who had bought the inn from Howe, sold it and 160 acres to Alanson Riker and William Jackson. Forming a partnership with cattle rancher Eugene Sherwood, they laid out a city a half-mile square. Knowing the railroad’s importance in getting the agricultural products of the area to market, Sherwood offered Southern Pacific Railroad free acreage for right-of-

way and a depot, which opened in 1872. That was the year Salinas City became the Monterey County seat. Two years later it was incorporated as a charter city. As agricultural enterprise in the Salinas Valley moved from hides and tallow to grains, sugar beets and beans, and after World War I, to the “green gold” of lettuce, artichokes and broccoli, Salinas became one of the wealthiest cities per capita in the United States. The Boronda Adobe History Center, located in Salinas, is the headquarters of the Monterey County Historical Society. In addition to the oldest standing adobe in the Salinas Valley, a Queen Anne style house designed by area architect William H. Weeks and the Lagunita School that Steinbeck wrote about in his story “The Red Pony” are located on the property. Today Our comfortable climate, abundant natural resources and diverse population provide a solid economic and cultural environment that is becoming increasingly popular with tourists. The Salinas Valley is the focus of a number of unique attractions, annual events and historical landmarks. Each year, the California Rodeo Salinas ranks in the top 20 of nearly 800 North American rodeos sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Oldtown Salinas, located in the city’s center, is composed of beautifully designed buildings constructed in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

OLD FISHERMAN’S WHARF Old Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey was built in 1846 for the many trading vessels bringing goods from around Cape Horn. Today visitors seek out a bit of history and the finest fresh seafood meals served anywhere. While the focus may have changed, the wharf is still a working wharf. One of the many ways the old blends with the new is with whale watching and fishing trips. Visitors can enjoy a sightseeing cruise to view migrating whales or a fishing trip to bring back a limit of fish.
