School Nickname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

2014-15 UCO Basketball

Coaches Outlook/Players

2014-15 UCO Basketball Head Coach Guy Hardaker

Guy started his coaching career at Edmond Memorial High School, serving as head girls golf coach and assistant boys basketball coach from 1987-93. He led the Lady Bulldogs to two state championships and one runner-up finish in golf while helping the boys basketball team to three Class 6A state tournament appearances, capped by a state title in 1993. Hardaker moved over to Edmond Santa Fe High School in 1993 and coached the boys basketball and golf programs there until coming to UCO. He led the basketball squad to four straight regional titles and the Wolves qualified for the state tournament his last three years at the helm, capturing the Class 6A state title in 2004-05. He finished with a 173-148 record at SFHS. Guy was a three-year baseball star at UCO from 1982-84, leading the Bronchos to a 101-49 record in that span before leaving following his junior year after getting drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. A two-time All-District 9 and NAIA All-Area pick, Hardaker was taken in the 10th round by the Phillies in 1983 and spent two years playing in the minor leagues, reaching as high as the Triple A level. He was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. Guy, who received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCO, is married (Tammy) and has two children (Chance and Tate).

In his ninth year at the controls of the Central Oklahoma program is Guy Hardaker, who has turned the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II national tournament contender. A member of the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame, Hardaker took over the helm in 2006 after a highly-successful stint as boys high school basketball coach and is 147-88 in eight years with the Bronchos. He’s led UCO to its only four Division II national tournament appearances -- including a pair of Sweet 16 berths -- and the Bronchos won 20-plus games a school-record four consecutive seasons from 2007-11. Guy guided Central to two titles and three runner-up finishes in the Lone Star Conference North Division the last five years the Bronchos were in the league and he’s had 11 players earn all-conference honors, including two Player of the Year selections. UCO finished a surprising 15-13 and was LSC North Division runnerup in Hardaker’s first year in 2006-07 and really took off the next season. The Bronchos gained a share of their first-ever LSC North Division title in 2007-08 and made it to the LSC Tournament finals for the first time since 1993 while also earning their first-ever Division II national tournament berth. UCO pulled out a thrilling overtime victory in the first round of the South Central Regional before losing to eventual champion Washburn to finish 24-8, the second-most wins in school history. The Bronchos did even better in 2008-09, winning the outright LSC North Division crown and making it back to the LSC Tournament finals in again qualifying for the national tournament as Hardaker was named LSC North Coach of the Year. UCO had two hard-earned wins at the South Central Regional to make the Sweet 16 for the first time ever before falling in the finals to host West Texas A&M and finishing a best-ever 27-6. Hardaker and the Bronchos came back with a 22-8 campaign in 200910, finishing runner-up in the LSC North and making a third straight national tournament appearance before losing in the first round. Guy got UCO back in the national tournament in 2010-11 with a team that lost six players to season-ending injury, using a stirring post-season run to advance to the Sweet 16 en route to a 22-10 finish. The Bronchos were once again LSC North Division runners-up, pulled off an overtime upset in making the LSC Tournament finals before losing a one-point heartbreaker there and then knocked off two higher seeds in advancing to the South Central Regional finals. Central competed as a Division II independent in 2011-12 and went 16-10 while playing one of the toughest schedules in school history. The Bronchos moved into the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2012-13 and got off to a promising start before being plagued by a couple of key injuries in ending up 9-17. UCO improved to 12-16 last year while losing five games by six points or less and won a first-round game in the MIAA Post-season Tournament.

2014-15 UCO Basketball

Season Review

2014-15 UCO Basketball 2013-14 Season Review Central Oklahoma got off to a fast start in 2013-14, but a second-half losing streak cost the Bronchos in their second year of playing in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. UCO won its first four games of the season and was 10-6 overall with a 5-4 league record before dropping seven straight conference games. The Bronchos ended up 12-16 overall and 6-13 in the MIAA, pulling off a first-round road upset in the MIAA Tournament before losing in the quarterfinals. UCO entered the game shooting just 38.0 percent from the field and the Bronchos lowered that after hitting only 20-of-60 shots (33.3 percent) in dropping a 72-62 decision to Tarleton State on the first day of the two-day classic. The Bronchos shot a paltry 16.7 percent (5-of-30) from 3-point range and also turned the ball over four times in the final three minutes after pulling within 58-56, allowing the TexAnns to put the game away at the free throw line. Jill Bryan led UCO with 21 points and six rebounds, while Haley Weathers and Julia Mason added 10 points apiece.

UCO 71, Texas A&M-Commerce 60

AUSTIN, Texas (Nov. 8) – Hayley Bryan scored six points in a 17-0 firsthalf run that put Central Oklahoma in control and the Bronchos went on to topple Texas A&M-Commerce 71-60 on the first day of the season-opening St. Edward’s Classic. UCO had 19-15 lead at the 11:37 mark of the first half when a Bryan layup ignited the big scoring spurt that pushed the advantage to 36-15 with 2:51 remaining and the Bronchos went on to a 40-23 halftime cushion. The Lions never got closer than seven in the final 20 minutes as UCO stayed safely in front to collect its eighth straight win over TAMU-C. Jill Bryan and Marley Anderson scored 13 points apiece to lead the Bronchos, with Anderson hitting all six second-half free throw attempts. Julia Mason added 12 points, while Hayley Bryan finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Texas Woman’s 81, UCO 53

DENTON, Texas (Nov. 24) – Another poor shooting performance led to a second straight Central Oklahoma loss in the Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere at Kitty Magee Arena. The Bronchos missed their last 15 shots of the first half in falling into an 18-point hole at the break and it didn’t get much better in the final 20 minutes as host Texas Woman’s rolled to an 81-53 victory. UCO ended up shooting a mere 26.3 percent (15-of-57) from the field and made just 3-of-25 attempts (12.0 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. Julia Mason scored a game-high 16 points to pace UCO, while Jill Bryan had 15 points and six rebounds in making the all-tournament team. Olivia Mason pulled down 10 rebounds.

UCO 64, Hillsdale 56

AUSTIN, Texas (Nov. 9) – Jill Bryan made six clutch free throws in the final 22 seconds to keep Central Oklahoma in front and the Bronchos escaped Hillsdale’s late rally for a 64-56 victory on the second day of the St. Edward’s Classic. The Chargers cut a 10-point UCO lead to 58-56 with 22 seconds remaining and fouled Bryan, but she foiled that strategy by making both foul shots to up the lead to 60-56. Bryan made two more free throws after rebounding a Hillsdale miss at 0:12 and then was fouled again at 0:05 after coming up with a steal. The senior finished off the late free throw flurry with two more charity tosses and the Bronchos had their second straight win of the young season. Bryan finished with 22 points, hitting all 11 of her free throw tries to tie a single-game school record for accuracy while adding 10 rebounds and four steals. Haley Weathers made three 3-pointers in scoring 15 points and Chelsea Robinson added nine big points off the bench by hitting both 3-point tries and all three free throw attempts.

UCO 98, Southwestern Oklahoma 75

EDMOND (Nov. 27) – All five starters scored in double figures and Central Oklahoma led wire-to-wire in a 98-75 drubbing of Southwestern Oklahoma at Hamilton Field House. Haley Weathers rattled in a 3-pointer from the top of the key 10 seconds into the game to give the Bronchos a lead they would never relinquish and UCO used the long ball to break the game open in the second half en route. FORT SMITH, Ark. (Nov. 12) – Haley Weathers scored nine of her gamehigh 18 points in the first 10 minutes of the game to stake Central Oklahoma to a double-digit lead and the Bronchos went on to down Arkansas-Fort Smith 66-57. Julia Mason opened the scoring with a short jumper, Whitney Dunn made one of two free throws, Jill Bryan hit a layup off a Haley Weathers feed and Britney Morgan drove in for another layup to give UCO a 7-0 lead three minutes into the contest and the Bronchos went on to pick up their first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association win of the season. UCO limited the Blue Tigers to 30.4-percent shooting from the field while forcing 25 turnovers in improving to 6-3 on the year and 1-1 in the conference. Tarleton State 72, UCO 62

National Tournament History Central Oklahoma has made six national tournament appearances, two in the now-defunct AIAW (American Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) and four in NCAA Division II. The Bronchos have an 10-6 record in national tournament play, including a 5-4 mark in Division II. UCO first qualified in 1975-76, defeating North Texas, 68-56, in the first round of the AIAW Division II Region IV Tournament before being eliminated by Northwest Louisiana, 89-80. The Bronchos went back in 1981-82 and won four games to reach the quarterfinals of the AIAW Division II National Tournament. UCO captured the Region IV Tournament crown with wins over Texas Christian (86-71), Ouchita Baptist (79-73) and Centenary (79-72) and then defeated Hofstra, 73-66, to make the quarterfinals before being eliminated by eventual champion Francis-Marion, 91-87. UCO didn’t return to national tournament play again until 2007-08,

when the Bronchos earned their first NCAA Division II playoff bid with an at-large berth into the South Central Regional. Coach Guy Hardaker’s crew knocked off St. Mary’s 75-73 in overtime in the first round before being eliminated by Washburn, 73-66. UCO went back to the Division II national tournament in 2008-09, advancing to the Sweet 16 in making the South Central Regional finals. The Bronchos opened with a 68-66 overtime win over Southeastern Oklahoma and then got past Washburn 72-63 in the semifinals before falling to host West Texas A&M 65-52 in the regional championship. UCO made it back to the playoffs again in 2009-10, but fell to Northeastern State in the first round, 54-52. 2014-15 UCO BasketBall the mid-ameriCa interCOllegiate athletiCs assOCiatiOn Central Oklahoma is in its third year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges:

Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, Nebraska-Omaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and Northeastern State all become league members with the start of the 2012-13 academic year. Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which leaves the conference with 14 schools. Lincoln and SBU are associate members who compete in women’s basketball.
